This free holiday update is awesome and I actually went out today and purchased the physical Switch version as I only have the digital version on PS4/5 and really wanted to show my continued support. My thoughts are that the next free update may include some games e.g. a couple of M-Network games but if you want all the M-Network games, there could be paid DLC available. I'm cool with paid DLC because wages need to be paid etc and even the recent cart releases of Berzerk Enhanced and Mr Run & Jump could be paid DLC and I'm cool with that also :-) Keep up the awesome work Jon!
I love bowling and happy to see it included in this update. I hope to see Digital Eclipse remake their Midway Treasures 1, 2, & 3 for Steam. Playing Robotron and Smash TV with a Xbox controller would be nice. Also playing games like APB, Paper Boy, Marble Madness, and 360 with a mouse or wheel would be radical. Emulators and ROM’s were fun but I prefer owning them legitimately and where they can be updated online.
When I programmed BASIC games in the 1980s, I discovered a really easy way to make a 2D maze that was always unique but always solvable from one entrance to another. The programming to do so is very simple and it gives a result very similar to Maze Craze's look.
I would play that for hours sometimes as a kid. Idk, i obsessed on it for a period of time and then got burnt out on it and hardly played it at all after that. It is a interesting game.
I have Atari 50 on the PS5 and the Switch. Really like the free update. Must say that I prefer playing this collection on the Switch. It makes this collection nice and portable so you can play anywhere. Being of senior years I think these games have translated very well on to the Switch and I look forward to any future updates! 😊
I know that the intent of Atari 50 is to showcase Atari’s history and not the history of individual machines, but I wish there was some of the Activision 2600 classics on there… Keystone Capers, Robot Tank, Space Shuttle, and Star Master were big parts of my gaming childhood :P I know that I could use emulation and roms, but I have Atari 50 on my Xbox and love playing these old games on the big screen.
I want more games from later systems. It's not that I hate the 2600 (though I am an NES kid, being an Xennial instead of a core Xer) but those 2600 games have been released so many times that I've played them as much as I wanted to. I don't really need another way to play Save Mary. On the other hand something like the 7800 or the Jaguar has seen very few re-releases. The value I really got from this package was being able to play games like Ninja Golf and Cybermorph, not my 1,000th way to play Asteroids. I want to see updates that bring games that haven't been rereleased over and over and over. I think Circus Atari is kind of rare as a rerelease so that's a good one from this package. On a side note you mention that paddle games can be played with the mouse in this review. Something I wish you'd note/talk about a little is the fact that you can play paddle games with the PS4/5 touchpad on most compilations including Atari 50. It isn't as good as a real paddle, of course, but with a little practice it gives that analog ability to go fast and slow that something like a Dpad is missing and provides an alternative way to play those games. I don't know for sure if it works with the PC version but if you have a PS4/5 controller those work on PC and it would be nice to see you give it a try.
Very cool that the are adding to what is already a really interesting and entertaining collection. I would love to see a lynx collection and Jaguar collection. Those were unobtainium as a kid, so I only got to see them in game magazines and never in person.
This was a very good update. While Atari 50 is truly awesome, I thought it could have included more "pick up and play classics" as opposed to Swordquest series. This update, I think, addresses this very nicely with the selection. Well done!
It's nice to have some additional 2600 games for free, especially the "prototypes" that were on the Flashbacks and XP carts. If anyone wants to play the M Network games, and additional 5200 titles, I recommend Atari Flashback Classics Vol.3 on the consoles (also Atari Vault Vol. 2 on the VCS). The additional games make it feel like a $20 DLC but even at that high price it's worth having alongside Atari 50...
I'm kinda hoping, since it was mentioned in the history section of Atari 50, and since they are allowing some homebrew, I'd really like to see 'The Stacks' in the future. Partially because I like 'Ready Player One', but also because I genuinely liked the game and would love to play it on my TV. Never expected this update, and the fact they announced further updates makes me very excited. I felt Atari 50 was a great deal already. The actual 2600 is a bit before my time, being born in 1987, but one day around 1995 or so, I was at a diner with my dad where he got coffee every morning. Some guy came in and said he had a big bag of Nintendo games he'd gotten somewhere, I think in a used car he bought. He gave them to me and it turns out they were Atari 2600 games. I didn't know what to do with them until my mom saw them. She had a 2600 in storage (and, apparently, I played it when I was young before I got my NES, but I was too young to remember), so she hooked it up and I played it alongside my NES and Genesis. Sure, the graphics weren't as good as those, but I had SO many games (in addition to whatever my mom had, the bag had like 30 or more games in it), so I had a lot of options and had some favorites, like Breakout, that I came to love.
Atari 50 is one of the best and biggest bargains ever produced for the consumer and fan. I have owned this since near the beginning, and, having been disappointed by "others", I was not prepared for how AMAZING this would be. And now I NEVER guessed they would expand it. For no extra charge at all. Just an amazing package. So glad we got this. Great times for great games. I just want a rotary controller that's weighted that will allow me to play tempest the way it was intended!
I love this! Just downloaded both the VCS and PS5 versions. Can't play them until later but seeing the games I'm excited about it. This game has been one of the best games out there as far as presentation and bang for your buck goes. Yeah, Berzerk should be any future updates and some form of Pac-Man. Won't be seeing any Activision titles.
I don't know about ATARI aquiring Digital Eclipse. Would've liked for them to stay independent. But I really welcome new additions to this 50th Anniversary Collection! Thanks for doing a video about it.
I'm so glad they settled the legal issues with Warbirds which was removed. How often is it that a company adds a game back to a collection after it was removed?! I can't think of any other example!
@@jeremiahthomas8140 Yes, correct. It's present on the Switch cartridge version. But if you updated the game, then it would be removed. This latest update finally allows you to update the game _and_ have Warbirds.
When my parents bought the Sears Video Arcade the first games they bought were bowling and Miniature golf. Miniature golf was frustrating at first then we found spots far away from the ball that would always get a hole in one for every hole. It’s crazy cause it’s usually the opposite corner from the ball then the ball goes crazy bouncing around then right in the hole. It’s crazy how I can still remember the spots to go to.
Now, that's fascinating. Over time you were able to find a spot that would send the ball pinballing around the screen and ultimately get where it needed to go? I want to know MORE! 😀
No disrespect to the 2600, but I feel like it's been done to death in collections. What I personally wanna see is more of everything else. More 5200, more 7800, more Lynx, and definitely more Jaguar. Atari is so much more than the 2600, so let's show the rest of the legacy some love.
I mostly agree. Keep the foot on the gas for more 2600 stuff, but I personally wanna see way more from the 8-bit line of computers. There's so much great stuff there that has gone unseen by most Atari fans.
I'm happy about the update, I really hope to see the arcade game Escape From The Planet Of Robot Monsters end up in the collection, I would also love a modern remake of the game!
Warbirds for Lynx has been restored to the collection. Still missing Food Fight for 7800. There are Jaguar games that can still be added, and potentially everything missing from the Atari Flashback Collection(s).
I grew up in the boonies. The Arcades were far away. So, I played a lot of 2600 pac man. It's not as good as the arcade version. But, it does have some nostalgic value.
I agree that Berzerk 2600 should be in there. It was a huge part of the Atari charm. M Network I don’t think should be part of this set even though they own the rights now. I feel the same way about Activision. This is Atari history, not the entire lineup of 2600 titles. Although, that would be a great title in itself. “2600: Everything and More!” 😂
Hey Jon. I was wondering, how would I get my hands on homebrew games on cartridge to run them on my original VCS? Have any homebrews been released on cartridge? Are there any companies that will take homebrews and put them onto custom cartridges? I'm also interested in the NTSC/PAL issue since I'm in a PAL region and lots of games coming out of the USA are NTSC meaning that they may or may not work correctly on PAL consoles and TVs. You might be interested to know that Australia has all but sold out of the new Atari 2600+ consoles, paddles and joystick controllers. As I write this, there are only a couple of stores that still have any stock on hand (All in Sydney and Melbourne, a minimum of 500 miles away from me) and I can't find any CX30+ paddles or bundles at all. It looks every store vastly underestimated the Christmas demand for these retro games. I feel silly for not having snapped up the joysticks and paddles when I had the chance.
You bet! Check the Atari Age store for tons of homebrew available on cartridge. I get the feeling Atari and Plaion underestimated the demand globally based on all the stories of delayed shipments I'm hearing about.
Not gonna lie, just picked up the collection from the Nintendo Eshop from my phone while at work today, and I had NO CLUE this was happening! This is great news, I was honestly not expecting this! I hope Atari can get the rights for Battle Zone back so we can have the Atari 2600, Arcade and Lynx versions to play in Atari 50. I remember hearing good things about the Lynx version in particular. Battle Zone is one of my favorite Atari arcade games and is a defining game in the First Person Shooter genre. I even watched my mom play an actual Battle Zone arcade cabinet at the national video game museum around my area. Wish I would've played it too. They also had a GIANT pong game with HUGE paddles. 😂
A pleasant suprise. I wish i was rich as id buy hundreds of copies just to show support. We live in the "pay now, will work later...maybe" era. They already did a great job. Adding anything extra, many nonths after the fact, without asking for more payment is the greatest thing sny game company can do. It deserves the absolute highest praise and acclaim. Stuff like shovel knight as well, who stuck to doing everything they said they would, and then some. We need more of this so it deserves support, recognition and mention, praise, videos articles retweets etc
I spoke to one of the developers some time ago (before Atari buying them) and they indicated they did have plans for content updates. Especially to address the Warbird's situation.
I hope that digital eclipse adds 2 player split controls for the joy cons of the switch edition, besides that this update seems like an amazing beginning to the rest of this collections updates!
Hi, thanks for your show! Last night I dreamt of an original woody that could connect to the internet. May I ask what mic do you use? Do you use processing software? It sounds very good.
I hope Digital Eclipse makes a Midway collection again. I think there is a possibility. This is because DOOM 64, developed by Midway, was remastered in 2020, and in 2021, Digital Eclipse created Space Jam: A New Legacy - The Game.
I expect to see separate paid DLC releases later. "Mr. Run and Jump", "Bezerk Enhanced" and "M-Network" all being separately available for purchase. I believe the 'free update' is a way to condition us for the paid DLC option.
Thanks for asking. That's the Atari XP series of collectors' cartridges. I have a playlist here of all the coverage I did on them including the lead-up and then a video on each one (plus a recap). th-cam.com/play/PL13zHeyDr6xtLUthUTg4c9gVkkaki9R8O.html
They should add these games next: Berzerk, Night Driver, Original Basketball, Original Football, Backgammon, Video Checkers, Video Chess, Video Pinball, Othello, Black Jack, Casino, Flag Capture, Hangman, Human Cannonball, Street Racer, Video Olympics, Sky Diver, Math Grand Prix, and Star Raiders (2600 version). There's also some sound effects that need to be corrected. Such as the game select sounds for Air-Sea Battle. Instead of the original sounds, we just hear beeps and boops when we cycle through the 27 variations. That should be corrected in the next patch.
Here's more they should add: Slot Machine, Home Run, Sentinal, Secret Quest, Battlezone, Code Breaker, Concentration, Brain Games, Championship Soccer, and Radar Lock. For the Keyboard games, show a keypad on-screen, just like they did with the Atari Flashback Classics trilogy. Also, add the original manuals for the systems.
Wow, fantastic that they have given away more content for free! Plenty of companies would stick a fee on DLC, even a small one. Delighted to get something for nothing. Haven't played either homebrew. Had Warbirds on my Lynx, a decent little game, quite tough (for a terrible gamer like me)
I agree with what you said...and that of course remains To be seen.....how about a little cloak n dagger arcade and or 5200 release like in the movie....I am a huge fan of the 1983 movie and I used to play the original machine....wish I had it now!!
I was really expecting Bubsy In: Fractured Furry Tales to be released, but maybe they are saving it. Good list, though. I expected Warbirds to be on the original release so much that when it wasn't, I wondered if they still had the rights.
@Michael-sn4rk I wonder why they removed it. Edit-Apparently Warbirds was sold off along with Math Gran Prix to Tommo in the 2013 bankruptcy. They got both of those back earlier this year in the Accolade deal.
I still hope they make the 3rd phase of VCTR SCTR a stand alone game. It's the best game on Atari 50, but it's hard to get to. I suck at Asteroids and always waste a life there, love Lunar Lander, but I wish I could just play the 3rd phase. It's like Beamrider only better.
@@GenXGrownUp. So sounds like this isn’t an update for the Arcade1Up Cabinet. Do you think since it’s WiFi enabled that it will also get updates including 2600 new games (please Pitfall!)?
@@glenjust630 I've not been following the A1U cabinet (though it does look great), and while new games are possible, I wouldn't hold my breath for Pitfall or other Activision favorites. While those were released FOR the Atari 2600, they weren't released by Atari themselves and aren't included in any existing licensing agreement A1U holds with Atari. Are you not able to add games to the A1U Atari50 cabinet?
@@GenXGrownUp I don’t expect them to add it in for free for Atari 50 since they bought those games. I’m sure you’ll have to maybe buy expansion packs. In the VCS you can buy the Atari 2600 version of Berserk. Just would love Berzerk and Frenzy and Lock n’ Chase arcade games.
I hope they put the 7800 version of Foodfight, the choppy pc version on the collection is not as good. Its hard to say what is next as this is really a history collection so I wouldnt expect to see Bubsy but we could see other Jaguar and Lynx games I hope. I think Atari will do right by Digital Eclipse, they are the best at what they do and adding these games could just be one person adding the information into an already built product? Maybe Nightdive is helping in some capacity too
There is a fairly good compilation from at games the ps and xbox split them into 3 game packs the switch just 1 cart or download it has all the 2600 and 5200 games plus many more including those micronics games. The atari 50th is better, but getting both, it's even better
How crazy would it be if Atari bought the Intellivision rights since they are pretty much underwater now and would be a cheap purchase. Would love for them to leverage D.E. to do something with Intellivision. Or work out a deal with Microsoft to get the original Activision games up and running this decade.
@@GenXGrownUpthen Atari can leverage their hardware experience (or their outsourcing) to build an upgrade Intellivision controller for modern consoles.
I got the Atari Vault collection plus dlc for around a couple dollars a few years ago. It came with all those games. So I never got the 50 collection. I had to get my Activision collection elesewhere. Unless there is a really good sale or if big suprises are ahead I’m not going for the 50 collection.

i want a proper 5200 system for 2024! Where is the love?
They should include all of the modern remakes that were released in the last few years ! I would definitely buy this cab with those on it .
I spoke to one of the developers some time ago (before Atari buying them) and they indicated they did have plans for content updates. Especially to address the Warbird's situation.
Am loving working my way through this fantastic package and love the dlc. Would gladly pay for Star wars arcade as future dlc!
One of the BEST complex of its time game that I LOVE the most is Atari 2600 Superman.
Oh, me too! That was a go-to that I played almost every time I sat down in front of the console TV.
Hey I got my physical copy Black Friday . be aware it is very hard to find in stores.
Do you think we'll see any third-party games (i.e. Parker Brothers, 20th Century Fox, etc.)?
I think if we see any it'll be M Network first since they're already under the Atari umbrella.
I want more Jaguar games
I hope that digital eclipse adds 2 player split controls for the joy cons of the switch edition, besides that this update seems like an amazing beginning to the rest of this collections updates!
I was Astounded when i got word of this latest update, really hope however they do include Berzerk in the next however!
Well, they’ve also announced their next Gold Master product on Jeff Minter.
Great job as always Jon. Like others Berzerk 2600 please.
Thanks!
Hi, thanks for your show! Last night I dreamt of an original woody that could connect to the internet. May I ask what mic do you use? Do you use processing software? It sounds very good.
I've since upgraded, but in this video I was still using my Blue Yeti: amz.run/9QxK
I sometimes do a little EQ, but very little. Thanks for watching!
@@GenXGrownUp Hey thanks man 👍
Wish there was more 5200/400/800 games and not so many 2600 titles.
Warbirds and MotoRodeo are games I want to play a lot!
Hey also, wouldn't it be cool if we got the Atari Force comic book series??
I’ve been playing a lot of Atari carts
Bowling is a great addition, it would be great if pressure cooker was added in the future
Intruder alert! Intruder alert! Now where's my Berzerk with voice enhancement??? Thanks for the update, Jon!!!
Bezerk is great hopefully Atari will add it at some point.
Digital eclipse are absolutely amazing the collections they release are very well put together.
I hope Digital Eclipse makes a Midway collection again. I think there is a possibility. This is because DOOM 64, developed by Midway, was remastered in 2020, and in 2021, Digital Eclipse created Space Jam: A New Legacy - The Game.
Wish they would pay more attention to the Atari 5200 and put some more of its games on here
I hope we get the arcade version of Night Driver soon.
I expect to see separate paid DLC releases later. "Mr. Run and Jump", "Bezerk Enhanced" and "M-Network" all being separately available for purchase. I believe the 'free update' is a way to condition us for the paid DLC option.
I remember playing Bowling for Atari 2600 on a little 12 inch black and white Hitachi tv when I was a kid. Good times. Haha.
BOWLING!
@@GenXGrownUp LOL
Hi! What are those boxes in the background that have ATARI 50 across them? Thanks!
@@GenXGrownUp Thanks for the reply. I will check it out!
They should add these games next:
Berzerk, Night Driver, Original Basketball, Original Football, Backgammon, Video Checkers, Video Chess, Video Pinball, Othello, Black Jack, Casino, Flag Capture, Hangman, Human Cannonball, Street Racer, Video Olympics, Sky Diver, Math Grand Prix, and Star Raiders (2600 version).
There's also some sound effects that need to be corrected. Such as the game select sounds for Air-Sea Battle. Instead of the original sounds, we just hear beeps and boops when we cycle through the 27 variations. That should be corrected in the next patch.
Great list that would really flesh out that early catalog. I didn't know about the ASB sound issue - thanks!
@@GenXGrownUp It's a big holiday season this year for Atari.
Here's more they should add:
Slot Machine, Home Run, Sentinal, Secret Quest, Battlezone, Code Breaker, Concentration, Brain Games, Championship Soccer, and Radar Lock.
Had Warbirds on my Lynx, a decent little game, quite tough (for a terrible gamer like me)
Overall, this is great news!
I agree with what you said...and that of course remains To be seen.....how about a little cloak n dagger arcade and or 5200 release like in the movie....I am a huge fan of the 1983 movie and I used to play the original machine....wish I had it now!!
Would love to see Shadow of The Beast🙏
Atari needs to buy back the rights to Battle zone as the Atari 2600 version is in my top games of the 2600 and was Atari at their very best.
Hey John do you have a date yet planned for the MegaMan micro player review?
I have them sitting in my studio, but it just keeps getting pushed back due to other more pressing stuff. Haven't fogotten about it, though!
We need more Jaguar games like Kasumi Ninja.
I’m surprised there’s no M Network games tbf but maybe in a future update
Well let’s hope for some online leader boards bc the flashback has that.
Hoping we see some more Jaguar games in the future.
I was really expecting Bubsy In: Fractured Furry Tales to be released, but maybe they are saving it. Good list, though. I expected Warbirds to be on the original release so much that when it wasn't, I wondered if they still had the rights.
Actually, if when you bootup the game without updating the initial update, Warbirds was a selectable game in the original lineup of games
I'm curious why Aquaventure was included in the new update, but not Yars' Return? M Network games would be good!
Are these updates also showing up on the Atari 50 arcade cabinet as well?
I think you mean the Arcade1Up cabinet. That's a separate product from Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.
Not necessarily part of this update but I’d like to see more Atari Jaguar games being released
Hopefully Berzerk for Atari 2600 will be added in a future update.
Truth may be that the Atari purchase allowed DE to add some staff to handle both lines. More 50th and continue the gold series.
I like the optimism!
Is this available for my Atari 50 on switch? I’m sure it must be on all platforms
I think it's across the board for the title.
I am hoping to see Stern/M Network games as well as those arcade games get a release in some form or fashion.
I'd be real surprised if those arcade titles were added to this package, but I'm sure we'll see them in some form.
Food fight, both arcade and 7800 version
I’m hoping for marble madness to be added to the collection
Marble madness was a atari and midway tite, am I correct? I seem to remember that game was on a Midway acade Treasure collection on the PS2.
@@chrisstory563 yea, even though though I believe the Atari games division is owned by midway it still says Atari so I guess it counts lol idk
@@chrisstory563 I mainly just want modern way to play the arcade version of marble madness portably on my switch
You're singing my song! Put Intellivision & Activision in the hands of Digital Eclipse and let them go HAM!
@@GenXGrownUpthen Atari can leverage their hardware experience (or their outsourcing) to build an upgrade Intellivision controller for modern consoles.
@@GenXGrownUp or better yet, go for the trifecta, grab Colecovision assets as well.
I want Bezerk sooooo bad.
Hoping they could somehow get a license or permission from Ozark Softscapes to bring the Atari 800 version of M.U.L.E. to the collection.
One of the greatest computer games of all time.
Atari is now into sinking the Titanic! I am happy Warbirds to get in it. Warbirds was supposed to be in there.
I got the Atari Vault collection plus dlc for around a couple dollars a few years ago. It came with all those games. So I never got the 50 collection. I had to get my Activision collection elesewhere. Unless there is a really good sale or if big suprises are ahead I’m not going for the 50 collection.
