Always wanted to know about these 'stretched shunters'. I love the tough boxy look, the utterly utilitarian rigour of the design. The power plant has a bit of the growl of the class 37's (which I also liked but never knew about till TH-cam!), but with an accompanying whistle, like a ghost train! Symphony on rails!
I love the little loco's I call them choppers I used to go up to tinsley tmd in Sheffield in the 80s I was about 15 me and my dad went up regularly and there was always 6 chirping away to each other it was like a new language up there in the late 1980s so many memories of 20s and 37s on coal trains! Tinsley has gone now it's a housing estate now I think sadly!!!😎
Benjamin Esposti the design was influenced by American locomotives, but with the cab right at the end instead of inset unlike the other Pilot Scheme Type 1s or Ivatt"s 10800.
What is the purpose/function of the maintenance train? It’s not a rail grinder, at least not like the Loram grinders we have in the USA. Weed spraying? Great video!
Makes me wonder if some of our elderly locos survive just because they sound great! I've been playing the game of name the location if only you'd put captions. Great video and audio though
Beautiful machines, with such a great soundtrack. Is there any way of tracking these down and their movements? I’m based in Stockport and would love to see One of these old girls again. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
hi there's 2 at hope valley cement works still used 20168 and 20906 i think they're in daily use and are the only 2 still in use on freight trains in the UK! they're owned by Harry needles railway! I've seen them a few times out and about! if you want to know about freight movements use the app real time trains I'm in Ashton-under-Lyne and I see odd class 37s on test trains occasionally.
Transportation UK probably a diesel gala - don't recognised where. But the 66 looks like the one painted in the London Underground map. The 66s might not ready for museums but the 59s are., but who'd want to? The only thing good about their looks is at least they look better than the 70s - beauty might be skin deep, but ugly goes down to the bone!
Still the fair share of photographers who cannot pan their dam cameras...... follow the object of interest when filming or at least an image that helps to further the narrative.....not an empty, (just been along that bit),.. track and a fading engine sound.....maybe a good ending for 1960's European 'Art Film'....No no no... we just want the train, .....start with long telephoto squishing up the perspectives...pulling in the zoom....panning the loco, carriage etc...then the beautiful long fade into the sunset. ..greens turning to red as we watch it gently sway into that distant bend......some manage it....but too many don't.....

Pretty good comment 👍
From when I first saw them in Derbyshire in the 1970's I always loved the whistle.
Class 20 my favourite.....60+years and still going strong. Great compilation. Cheers.
I need a dvd full of these working - a full 3 to 4 hours. just cannot get enough.
Strange things aren't they. They sound like something from the TV shows, Space 1999 or UFO. :-)
They are the Clangers loco's ;)
Just need driving by purple-wigged beauties!
The kid's reaction at 19:30... Priceless :D
Such an iconic loco with a wonderful sound to them
Worked on the engines at Derby Loco my favourite. Been on Jolly Fisherman a few times. Love the chirping.
In 1980 - 81 I would get a Deltic on a Joint Line diversion to Sleaford, kip in the waiting room and get a pair of these to Skegness.
2:19 lovely tones
Brilliant. Brings back memories seeing them on Blackburn to Clitheroe line in the 1960s

They're commonly known as 'Whistling Wardrobes' ......
I do love the sound of these diesel locos 👍.
Choppers , remember bashing them on the "skeggies" to Leicester and Derby , memories
I remember they ran the Jolly Fisherman from Derby to Skegness in the day. Made for a nice journey.
Did anyone else find themselves flailing uncontrollably while watching this?
Awesome!!! Reminds me of the older ALCo diesels here in the states, with their large 1000HP, inline-6, turbocharged engine! (ALCo 539T engine)
Benjamin Esposti the design was influenced by American locomotives, but with the cab right at the end instead of inset unlike the other Pilot Scheme Type 1s or Ivatt"s 10800.
I always find the sound of these mechanical beasts extremely soothing. Yes I'm weird. No I don't give a fuck.

Those trains are used to clear the rails of leaves during the autumn

I love the 20142 unit. Helping out EMT(EMR now)
Beautiful machines, with such a great soundtrack.

Like the sound of these! Reminds me of alco 539t diesel engines
5:58 when you ask for one then four arrive at once😂
god the class 20 is such a cool sounding locomotive
What station is that at 1:50? I'm sure I know it but can't quite place it.
Noce choppers.
Why is looks like a American GM-EMD locomotives???
I'd say it's efficiency;
When a design is proven to be successful, it's replicated to the masses. But besides that, I think it's just a coincidence.
0:23 looks a bit like the railway station i know of known as garforth
i am almost attemted to see them in real in your country, lovin it.
Thanks Alex. You should come and see them, they are great!
Brilliant compilation.
As clarkson would say, Model railways = best hobby... .. . In the world.
'Whistling Wardrobes' ...... 🙂
These things confuse the hell out of me...the front looks like the back and the back like the front. Are they going forwards or backwards?

I think the Class 20s sort of look like mainline Class 08s.
Just Great
I didn’t know they reserved a Class 66!
