- The Type Ones Design which were the Class 20s were one of my Favourites. This clip is from a DVD I Bought about 5 years ago on the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway Called Tribute to the Class 20s. 55 Minutes long.To buy please go to www.transportvideo.com
Bittersweet, seeing how varied and interesting rail traffic was, back in the day. Very grateful for those who have recorded those days for us.
Brings back so many happy memories of train spotting at Melton Mowbray back in the 1970s when these workhorses were a regular sight every day
Miss those days so much
I spotted from 1965 to 1975 further down the line in P'boro, and these 20's were as common as rocking horse crap..... Maybe, a pair would turn up on a mixed freight working on the odd Sunday (replacing the booked pair of 25's) and that would be the lot. Very, very rare loco's in P'boro...
We used to have Four of these in multi to bring coal up the very steep Bootle Branch from Liverpool docks, for Fiddlers Ferry power station. The sound track they used to produce was incredible.

1992: "Soon the characteristic sound of these veteran Type 1s will pass into history."
2019: "Soon the characteristic sound of these veteran Type 1s will pass into history."
2021: "Any minute now. In three, two, one..."
2035: "Seriously?!"
2168: We are still here....
It's funny how he says they will pass into history, there's still quite a few wondering around with their amazing type 1 engines!
True..DRS has got 6
I was literally driving one yesterday 20305 , still runs great
The 20's have literally outlived the actor who did the voiceover for this video. :)
Diesel die hards.
cant beat faded rail blue with grime; my childhood all over again!
I've literally just posted a video I made about the Class 20s, I can't believe I never saw this! Awesome, wonderful to see footage of them in the old BR green and blue liveries.
My favorite loco & favorite sound
class 20
These mini whistlers used to do the run to fiddlers ferry and going past Skelhorn junction in Timperley.
Drove these at shirebrook west in 70s, Good days
Excuse my ignorance me being a mere layman, what was the layout of the 20s cab did the seats rotate or did one face forwards and the other face backwards?
Quite a few still knocking about here.Sound Great.''
love the sound of them
Great film Trevor! To think a few are still floating about on the network today! What an achievment! We all thought their days were up in the eighties!
Hello Trevor very nice video . What a work horse 20,s were
great little video, very enjoyable.
Enjoyable as always Trevor. Interesting the narrator said the sound of these type ones will fade into history. We still have them yet! Lol they did sound amazing though didn’t they! Cheers. Dave
Glad you enjoyed the footage Dave.'''
what a little gem of a video - and the sound of those locos - heaven! thanks for finding and sharing this clip, much appreciated
always loved the 20s
I Live in York and DRS Rail company run them quite a lot there trains plus preserved 20s are on a lot of Private Railways at different times of the Year.''
i love the chopper!
always look good paired up Trevor , nice one from the Archives
It’s about time that NRM had the prototype D8000 up and running.
The first time I saw a class 20 it was paired up with a class 37 they were both in DRS livery they had one of those flat bed wagons with a nuke flask on it I saw them in 2006. The class 20s look better in British Rail Blue in my opinion dirty or clean I still like them and the chopper sounds as well.
Nice!
Will! :D
Some still in use on RHTT this year, and DRS have a couple as well. Still working twenty years (at a guess) past this footage.
Good old choppers,i used to call them giant shunters,
And yet 2021 still going strong 👍👍
Jeezo I wouldn’t like to be living next to a railway line when one of these would go past
Thanks for uploading this, it’s gold!
Glad you liked the Footage....Trevor.
Such nice sounding engines!
That sound reminds me of an old Baldwin locomotive……with a turbocharger sound thrown in for good measure.
They were early diesels on BR built in 1957 so were pioneers
Those sound remarkably similar to the old Thumpers to my ears.
what a video nice one........
Yes.
If Robert Plant was a diesel locomotive he would be a Class 20.
Still a few about in 2019!
Thank you Trevor. The distinctive sound they make, takes me back to my childhood.
Are they always operated in doubles?
pretty much yea
Narrator was Sooo Wrong. Enthusiasts and rail companies realise Type 20's were Pure, brute work horses.
Why does the commentator feel the need to talk over the sound of the locos?
Does anyone know what happened to all the 'Rail News' videos what used to be on youtube up until a few months back? They were fantastic, informative videos and were narrated by the same gentleman as in this video. If anyone has any information about where I can find/buy them in whatever format, I'd be extremely grateful!
I remember those, the channel was railvintagetv. I'll see if I can find out where the clips were from.
Thank you!
Thanks for your Comment,Trevor.''
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ video 👍
*HOLY SHIT DUDE IS THAT THE CASS 20 NORMAL SPEED ?*
Aren't American diesel locomotives still designed and built in a similar way IE with a single cab at the front? Check out Delay In Block Productions videos and you'll see what I mean.
I believe that the Class 20 and the other Type 1s with a single cab, other than the Class 14 and Class 17, were influence by American designs starting off with Ivatt's LMS design that had the number 10800. The Class 14 and Class 17 were influenced by German designs.
As a Yank, I don't know much about their inner workings but are those opposed-piston engines? I like the sound of the 20's.
@@vondumozze738 As far as I know they are not opposed piston engines but conventional 8-cylinder jobs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_20
Sounds lovely but bloody awful, uncomfortable locos to drive, as soon as you saw you had these on your job your heart sank.
Are there any for sale?
Don't Know.....Sorry.''
Shame so many ended running "flat first" - spoils their ambition to be North American engines 🤣
Shush.....!!!!!
