I read somewhere that even the ending with the panel of Guts crying for a second is coated in nuance and different connotations upon a reread of Berserk. Namely, there's the more upfront reason that he's crying because of how he handled Theresia's revelation after coming out of the summoning as well as how many we saw get killed simply for being involved with him. On the second read though, you really feel he could also be crying because of how Griffith dismissed Guts as less than an ant in the interstice and how Guts was powerless when Griffith was right there. Or my favourite reason because you really feel for him after everything, is that he's weeping for Vargas and by extension, with the knowledge that everyone who comes into contact with demons are doomed to the same hell Vargas was, Guts' fallen band of the Hawk comrades as well
I like how you actually talked about panel composition and did more than just summarize the plot. The ending made me cry. I hope to hear you talk about Golden Age one day. This video was filled with so many great observations
This is a great a video. I do have a small correction to be made at around 14:50 however. Miura initially didn't plan on the Demon Infant being Guts' child. He didn't even have Casca in mind until around vol 4 and even then, he didn't even plan on having Guts & Casca get together. There are some things he did plan for, like how when drawing the Beast of Darkness beside Guts when he's reflecting in the elf cave in the Conviction arc is when the idea for the Berserker Armor came to him but a lot of the best plot threads to happen in Berserk, primarily Golden Age, was just Miura kinda figuring it out as he went along. Some artists are just like this like Akira Toriyama who just kept making stuff up as he went along, but in MIura's case, he just managed to create a legitimate happy accident- especially given how major of a role the Demon infant plays later in the story.
Genuinely insightful and thoughtful, absolutely loved the video ! Also I'm glad to hear my work's somehow resonated with you, it was very heartwarming to see in the vid' ! ; v ;
daaaaaaaaamn son, great vid... halfway thru but i can already tell that you are very passionate abt berserk. i love how deep you go into things that other yt channels dont really notice, like paneling and such, really great. you never miss and make it a fun experience, thanks for your hard work and HYPE for the next installments of this video series ayyyyyy
I don't normally comment on videos but DAMN this was fantastic. I'm kinda shit at literary analysis, so you going through the arc and pointing things out really blew my mind. Like, I knew that I adored Berserk, but you finally put it into words. I can't wait for you to cover the other arcs of the manga, and for your other videos! Instant subscriber right here. Best of luck on your future endeavors!
Took me awhile to get around to watching this, but I am glad I finally did. Out of all the media I've experienced in my life, Berserk just might be the one that means the most to me, it's been with me for a long time now and I am grateful for the impact it has had on me. I think The Black Swordsman arc, while flawed and arguably one of the lesser arcs of the manga, still has a lot going for it and shows Miura's tremendous talent even early on. The seeds of greatness were planted in these early chapters and seeing how they would blossom into the more nuanced and intricate character beats, plot points and thematic overtones is what makes it a compelling arc. Maybe not compelling in its own right, but how it fits into the larger picture of the narrative. Anyways, really dug the video, it was cool to hear your perspective, even funnier to hear you read the manga out of spite. I am looking forward to the rest of the parts whenever you get around to them.
Re-reading this arc after Golden Age Arc make some scenes hit hard. Guts crying at the end realising he ended up becoming Griffith fot the princess and robbed her out of her childhood and a normal life. Count and Griffith both provided almost impossible choices but only one of them choosing to remain a human while other fell to lust of power. Griffith willingly sacrificing his band while Count sacrificing himself instead of his own daughter What great parallels.
I never had such a strong emotional response to a yt video. That last part about Miura caught me off guard and overwhelmed me. Your selling yourself short, that was very insightful and cathartic. Thank you.
I finished reading the Black Swordsman Arc ever since I got my hands on the Manga, and it’s without a doubt one of my favourites alongside ghost in the shell, I think this was a perfect way of introducing the main character to the audience and that got me hooked throughout the whole arc.
I disagree that Guts clapping demon cheeks to kill her doesn't make sense because of Guts' trauma. Having sexual trauma is incredibly complicated and can lead to seemingly incoherent or inconsistent behavior such as being hypersexual, while also not wanting anyone to touch you in any other circumstances. People with sexual trauma also often have dark fantasies pretty much exactly like that scene so, considering the point he is in his story during the black swordsman arc, I think it makes perfect sense.
This made me notice how good The Black Swordsman arc really is. Always thought it was way too edgy and I made my Critiques of the art get in the way of understanding how good the story was. Also This videos has a similar vibe to what I get when I watch supereyepatchwolfs videos, It's not a bad thing btw, I absolutely love it. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it very much.
I own it and I periodically try. The story, with the exception of the first few episodes, is Berserk. This could have worked if they just went with traditional animation. Even limited animation, like '97, would have made it work. The CGI is ugly and the camera won't stay still. The 2d stuff isn't half bad. And the dub is not good. Most of the characters sound edgy. Even the music sounds edgy, except for the Hirasawa stuff. The 9mm Parabellum stuff is good too, even though it sounds really shonen. And isn't it a slap to the face they brought back the voice of Silat but not Guts, Griffith, and Casca? Lets say this, I own it and I'll keep it and periodically watch it, but if something happens to it, I wouldn't feel butt hurt about it. I usually watch it MST3K style and riff on it the whole time.
I started reading manga because I had to know what else happened in berserk and now I've read quite a few different series and I have berserk to thank for introducing me to this amazing type of entertainment
I think there's more reason that Guts saved Puck than he'd ever let on. I've always thought that prequel chapter much later on down the line where Guts meets an elf way before the eclipse and presumably meeting the Band of the Hawk in a dungeon was a bit odd but it recontextualises why Guts did what he did in the shop for Puck. Why else would he have been so considerate and even generous as to pay the shop owner and TELL him that he's going to wreck the place a bit after seeing what was happening to an elf tied to a post with seemingly no chance of shaking free? If he were genuinely as ruthless and a heartless bastard as he made himself out to be he wouldn't have bothered taking those two seconds to explain to the shopkeeper what was gonna happen and go for the next guy that was going to hurt Puck, he would've just run straight in without an actual care in the world who he had to kill or hurt to get what he was looking for.
Amazing video and cover of some of the heavier themes of the story. Made me look at it in a completely different way, keep going. Your videos are great, thanks for making them.

Ey thanks, I dont think I'm familiar with Eclipse Studios but i'm sure I'll come across or sooner or later. Berserk fan projects are usually pretty based
lol. It has its highs but it's also met with a tremendous amount of lows as well. The flanderization of puck, wasted/barely developed characters: SK/Zodd, Serpico, Isidro, Rodrick, almost everyone in that little JRPG group after conviction, the tedious aspect of magic, intermittent characterization, extremely limited cast (golden age), and the excessive superficial shock value which also includes literal children at times💀It's a decent manga but falls off post GA; there are a plethora of manga out there that are substantially better --> Usogui, Kokou No hitou, 20CB, Blade of the Immortal, RuroKen, REAL, Ashita No Joe / Hajime no ippo, Kingdom, Beck, GTO, One Outs...the list goes on

yo your back. I thought you stoped uploading. Good to see you back. The black swordsman arc is extremely underated and people who skip it arnt experiencing the story in the right direction
What's the effect on the panels that you use when examining the story. It kinda looks like a photo/ film reel negative. How did you achieve the effect? Specifically I am at the bit where Femto talks down particular some mad shit to Guts
Its a combination of just inverting the color, and this effect called "Prism Blur" in DaVinci Resolve, which adds color splitting, a blur vingnette, and a darkened vignette if i'm not mistaken. I use Prism Blur a lot throughout the video
@@SchnozMeister I think it's the one I am on about. It looks like the use of black and white has swapped on the page. So it looks like manga drawn with white ink on black paper. Is that the prism blur effect? Thanks for the reply. It looks really cool and I'd be up for seeing more prism blur in future videos, even future berserk videos. Keep it up.
