"The comparison is unfair" THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT!! This is a brand new genre for splatoon single player, and I think it makes sense that there are some rough edges. The devs clearly worked pretty hard on it judging by how long it was delayed, and hopefully this gives them some knowledge for how to approach different single players experiences in the future!
Yeah this feels like it was their first experimentation to try to stray away from the same formula of every story mode, maybe hopefully they'll try something as unique again but with more replay value
Not really since octo expansion was the one to first stray away from the formula and it was great and much better executed than side order My problem with SO Isnt even the roguelite aspect but rather the level design which is absolutely abismal, it definitely hurt the replayability because having only three different modes really gets stale after just an hour of playing
@mouthwaterin octo expansion doesn't stray from the splatoon formula, it's a perfection of it. Just like every other story mode, you have levels with set objectives that must be cleared to progress, it just has better designed objectives and more interesting story beats between the objectives than any of the other story modes. But the core gameplay is the same, where as side order is very different.
@@tori_emerald the core gameplay is the same for SO, you have multiple levels to choose from with an end goal just like any other story mode The only difference with it is that it's got a roguelite layer to it which was already somewhat present during the past campaigns (improving the weapons and armor)
Pearl says that marina is cool. This false narative is so disgusting for me. Theyre more than best friends. But not like that! The creators would be disgusted and not want to make anything splatoon anymore.
@@tillllttt372I’m confused by what the first part is supposed to mean, but there’s nothing wrong with a community shipping two characters especially when it’s so heavily implied. Also who says the creators would be disgusted?
@@tillllttt372 if it disgusts you, maybe you should stop playing since the game is full of queer people LMAO and ofc, Marina writing yuri comics about herself and pearl, them apparently sleeping in the same bed and marina being called "maiden in love" by the developers definitely shows that they're only supposed to be friends!(Sarcasm)
@@NotSnak I think Side Order has better gameplay but doesn't do enough with it. After like 2~4 runs you've seen basically everything the game has to offer, which considering Rougelikes are based off replayability, is incredibly disappointing.
I honestly didn't care that much for most of Octo Expansion's story. The beginning and especially the end are REALLY cool, but the mem cakes did nothing for me and only about a third of the chat log stuff felt impactful. For Side Order, I liked the Dev Diaries and elevator conversations better but the ending was not as impactful.
@@TheOnlyCelciAndDontYouForgetIt yeah. I wouldve liked more objectives and bosses having one or 2 more objectives would add alot more variety to the game, which is part of the reason i liked OE so much alot of the levels felt really distinct and unique in terms of objective. And having some more bosses than just 3 would also masisvely help in that regard.
I can forgive the small amount of enemies because this is the first ever time we aren’t facing octarians and with the exception of parallel canon are much more unique than enemies we’ve had in the past
I wish I could agree but the Jelletons are mostly slightly reworked Salmonids with the Towering Nobilmente being an Octosniper on top of a Stinger's tower. I think this wouldn't be as bad if they went farther and added more boss salmonid reworks as well to increase variety
I think the Jelletons are in a weird spot because, as mentioned above, more than a few are clearly just expies of certain Salmonids/Octarians, or otherwise mimic objects seen in PvP (such as the flying sprinklers or the eels using splashdown) The tops, spawners/homing missiles, and the non-parallel canon bosses are the only enemies I'd say that feel entirely unique
In some ways, yes. I would like to point out that the design and attacks seem to be more of a callback to Octowhirl from the first game though (which I personally enjoyed quite a bit).
Something i really liked about them was how you got something as a reward for beating them, like a spring or just a big explosion. For example, you could shoot the towering nobilmentes tower down, but then you wouldn't get the explosion afterwards.
Honestly this just makes me more excited for Splatoon 4 since it’s pretty much gonna be a fresh new start to the story as whole. And I mean come on who doesn’t want to make Stringer the absolute god of destruction
I feel like Octo expansion was just a crazy evolution of the single player mode. S1’s campaign was decent, S2’s was more mid, but Octo Expansion really blew it out of the water. While I can respect what side order for bringing a new gameplay format into the Splatoon series, it didn’t hit the same highs in both gameplay and story compared to Octo Expansion.
One of my biggest complaints about side order is how limited it feels, there's so much potential in the side order style formula for more than what it ended up as. Why no endless mode? Why the 30 chip cap, why no chip limit upgrades? Why no 3x chips, why no dual color chips? Why no difficulty increasing hacks? For a dlc designed to be "infinitely repayable" it feels so repetitive and limiting.
I think he was giving an estimate for new players since he did say focusing on the spoiler free side of things. Half of the reason full attempts take so long is cause you don't know what is going on; once you do though you can churn that out real quick. You also just naturally are slower for your first few runs to try and figure out how things work and what doesn't work.
I would say from a mechanical and gameplay standpoint, Side Order is the most fun mode for me to play. It just takes all of Splatoon's mechanics and refines them while adding their own new ideas like springs and the pearl drone. It's just the most fun power trip this game series has ever done.
I would like to say no simply because of not enough enemies (need like 3 more normal enemies and boss fights) and that there should be at least one more type of stage + 3 more stages for each type. Otherwise besides the lack of dialogue I like the replay ability of the game
There is a lot of dialouge, but it doesn't always show. For example, I watched all of Chara's Side Order streams, and he never got the heaviest Pearlina ship dialouge, but he kept getting the same dialouge over and over instead
"How many times do you think we've climbed the Spire so far?" "I dunno, I stopped keeping track after a while." ~Dialogue I saw after like, 3 runs into the Spire. (They _really_ needed a better system for showing text, moments like that are so stupid.)
Side Order is good but Side Order 2.0 is going to be awesome. But Octo's underdog liberation story and deep sea vibes is going to be very hard to beat.
@The-guy-who-is-okay As someone who actually did play Hades I'd agree that it definitely has more content, but Splatoon's moment to moment gameplay is more interesting to me so I still ended up enjoying Side Order more. If you want a roguelite experience specifically then yeah just play Hades, but if you're looking for more Splatoon content then Side Order is definitely worth it.
This is true, if you love splatoon pick it up, but if you just want a good 3rd person shooter rougelite buy ror2 and if you want a rougelite buy hades or dead cells.
I started playing splatoon like, a year before splatoon 3 came out. I thought it was just inklings and I didn't even know there was an expansion. But then I saw an octoling in battle and I was SO FRICKIN JEALOUS. I searched up how to get it, and I found out it was through the octo expansion. I wanted the octo skin SO BAD, that I kind of just sped through the octo expansion and DREADED playing it. I never got to experience whether I like the octo expansion or not without speeding through it. I did REALLY enjoy Side Order though. This video makes me wanna go replay Octo Expansion and see if I ACTUALLY like it. Thanks for the vid!!!
10:26 it really surprised me when I saw just how threatening the reef slider was in this fight. Like, I obviously knew I had to dodge the sharks, but I never expected that attack to end my second attempt at the tower 😂
I think what I appreciate about Side Order the most is how hyper aware Nintendo was about showing respect for Octo Expansion. Side Order's story feels more like an epilogue to Octo Expansion and as someone who loves rougelikes, there's definitely some things that Nintendo can do to turn up the heat a bit, but I think the important thing that they didn't do is spit all over Octo Expansion's reputation. They tried something new and even if the new gameplay loop didn't click with some fans, I think the most important thing is that they didn't throw anything about Octo Expansion in the trash in terms of its story and it feels like a very wholesome conclusion to Eight, Acht, Pearl, and Marina's story at least for the time being unless if Nintendo wants to tell more stories with these characters.
Massive props to Chara and Logi for this beautifully edited video! This not only went over the topic of Side Order and Octo Expansion almost perfectly but was just a joy to watch!
New editor? I don't remember Chara's videos being this sparkly clean. I feel like they rehearsed the spoiler dialogue to sync it up with the music, that couldn't have been edited as clean as it was in post, it was planned
@@amberukiseveI’ve been editing for the channel since Nov 2022. Ty for the kind words, the spoiler transition was actually not planned in the recording it was cut together entirely in post production
@@LogiCreates danm, a man can dream... But also this was a detailed review when like 55% of Chara's videos are scrims and 45% are tier lists, patch notes and weapon analysis, so not a lot of room to flex like in here
My thing I wanted was more endgame hacks that make the game harder. An idea being a hack that gives 1.5x prlz upon tower completion, but bosses get harder For floor 10, the bosses play as their floor 20 counterpart For floor 20, each boss would get their own extra challenge (Boss spoilers ahead) Pinging Marciale: spawns in Homing Arpeggio’s on bumper hit and bumpers give off a wavebreaker wave when hit Asynchronous Rondo: main layers (layers with lights) can only be damage when all layers below it are destroyed and bottom 2 layer spotlights are active as well. Spotlight attacks are also more powerful in their own ways (multiple toxic mysts at once, larger inkstrike, etc.) Parallel Canon: no extra armor in middle and the opponents spawn in with 2 layers of armor. Their pearl drone also now copies the chips you have Smollusk: portals and boss have more health. Extra attacks include the following: booyah bomb radiating from smollusk, covering the entire middle of the map and destroying bombs like a normal booyah bomb Summon 2 Parallel Canon enemies. They spawn with their special already ready (phase 2 and 3 attacks) Toxic myst launcher. Tosses into the air a bunch of toxic mysts into the air which land around smollusk, similar to the chump attack (phase 3 attack only) Thoughts?
Octo Expansion rewards: - Cuttlefish gear set - Neo Octoling (enemy) gear set - Null Armor (8's armored gear) gear set - C.Q. Cumber's counductor cap - Golden Toothpick - A *new playable race*, with *a brand new set of animations* - The ability to spend unused CQ points on a vending machine (instantly converting them to rewards) SO rewards: - 8's gear - Four headgear pieces (based on 8's "armor", the Pearl-drone, the Parallel Canon boss, and Marina's mind-control headset) - The Splatoon 2 lobby - "Order" reskins of weapons (replacing Hero weapons, curiously absent from Alterna but present in Splatoon 2) - A handful of banners/titles - 1 copy of several locker decorations - A once-a-day conversion of Prlz to a random item (either money, a ticket, or another copy of the previously purchased locker items)
Maybe side order could even be better if there’s a few more stuff like more varient of floors, more bosses, maybe even an infinite tower like : more floors you moved, more important are the rewards at the end.
4:05 Splash Wall is actually really useful for killing the baby fish cannoli and the flying bomb cannoli instantly without dealing damage to you (and yes I know I bought Fizzy Bomb almost immediately shut up).
My biggest critique for the game was also lack of enemy design. Especially the boss fights. Hell I would've taken orderfied versions of past bosses as well just for some added variety.
Well I think octo expansion boss are very simple due to just reskins and simple additions. Enemies are reused yeah octo expansion enemies are not the best
See, now if we got an intro cut scene after the credits where agent 4 is literally just sitting at an abandoned Octo canyon/valley staring at the camera menacingly with order particles on their head, it would have been at least 150% cooler minimum than what we got.
I have a feeling that Splatoon 4's base campaign is going to be an easier version of Side order the same way Splatoon 3's base campaign was an easier version of Octo Expansion.
As a rougelike enjoyer (and player of splatoon 2), I bought splatoon 3 just to play this dlc. I had a few gripes with the dlc, mostly related to P12 being my least favorite weapon. It could have been cool if P12 was a toggle switch to play whatever weapon you want. shooters don't interest me that much. p.s. as a returning splatoon player, it has been fun watching your content. keep up the good work.
for me its so good 9.5/10 as a rogue hater, i always think roguelike games are hard modes for hard core player. but side order is very fun to play as a casual. and turning off some hacks, it turns so challenging.
TLDR: side order and octo expansion don't need to be compared because they're both great stories with great gameplay, even if you personally enjoy one more than the other. i wish so many people wouldn't compare dlcs/campaigns like this. every story has it's own way to be told and own secrets to uncover, regardless of the way it's presented. the splatoon 1 story wasn't the most innovational or groundbreaking, but we still all love it the same because of the great story behind it. Side order and Octo expansion both exist in their own points on the timeline and can be played and enjoyed regardless of the way they're executed. splatoon will always hold a special place in my heart and i cannot wait to see where the story leads next and I look forward to splatoon 4(if and when it's coming). Also, chara, love the editing style and approach to these videos. Keep it up!
I mean Octo expansion is the only other Splatoon DLC out there, so people will inevitability compare it to that and rightfully so. We expected it to be similar in quality to it, but it wasn't, And that's okay but people are allowed to be disappointed about it. I for one am the most disappointed in the lack of lore / narrative, that was the whole reason why I liked Octo expansion so much, they did up the ante when it came to gameplay but I don't think that was the best trade off imo.
@@lexiw.145 true. I admit to being a bit biased toward splatoon, so i'm reluctant to admit i'm disappointed with side order's story. I don't think it's bad, but i definitely agree with you that they could've done better. hopefully they're listening to the community and realize that the gameplay's great but the story can be better.
I think there are parts where comparisons are fair (which is why a few are here) but as a whole its def a different scenario which is what I tried to clarify at the end, ty for the compliments.
@@ProChara yeah i forgot to mention the end, i 100% agree. one thing i'm curious about, though, is do you think there'll be a splatoon 4? fresh season (i think that's the season we're in currently, my fault if i'm wrong lol) is the second to last season in the 2-year live-service updates. what are your personal thoughts on splatoon in the future? edit: i'm an idiot, just finished the video and heard your thoughts and couldn't agree more.
I 100% completed them both. Splatoon 2’s was equivalent to waterboarding oneself with magnesium. Side Order is MEANT to be replayed, so it was actually really fun to get all of the Chips! Just wish you could spend your Prlz on more things.
I would really disagree, it felt fun and meant to be 100%d. I wasn’t bored until I finished low hacks, on the other hand splatoon 2 story mode is abbysmal to 100%.
I honestly disagree a lot. I thought it was really enjoyable to clear with all the palettes and have found myself just doing runs again to see how broken I can get with the color chips for fun
I wish they could expand Side Order a bit to be like Octo Expansion after the first run of the spire where you venture through the memories of Marina, the sanitized octolings, and Acht. They could also have Marina and Pearl (in her normal state) as playable characters. I also wouldn't mind seeing Agent 4 and Fire & Ice (Deep Cut minus Big Man) in the story. And the key to end all levels would be the vibe rhythm mini-game that was used during the first final boss. It would also be interesting the everyone would yell Booyah along with the vibe mini-game to fight back against Order's repaired mass grayscale. The first one would be interrupted by Agent 4 since they have security pass to the control room. Which is how they ended up in the memories.
It would also be nice to add New Game plus to players who would want to experience the story again through original mode or expanded mode for those who want a loner experience.
For me I’d say yes. Octo Expansion is amazing obviously but imo the gameplay loop here is simply way more fun. My biggest critique of OE has always been that there were simply too many stages, or stages that feel too similar to one another. You can make a similar criticism of Side Order but to me all of the palettes being so different from one another build and gameplay wise makes the gameplay so much fresher. I had a blast getting 100% with limited hacks, and I’m looking forward to optimizing my runs even further in the coming months.
I like that the gameplay loop is fun and mindless. It makes it easy to listen to a youtube video in the background without the game distracting me too much.
I think Octo Expansion can work on its own as a $20 game. Meanwhile Side Order is definitely just a side mode for Splatoon 3. A great, worthwhile, fun side mode that is a great addition to the game, but not a campaign that could be it's very own game. When Splatoon 4 launches if it launches with a campaign and a Roguelite mode it will have a banger amount of singleplayer content.
Who else bought Side Order then ended up raging at it and saying you hate the game every single time you play because you get to floor 27 and suddenly every option is hard or rigorous no matter how many time you reset the floor then lose all of your lives and have the do it all over again because you don’t have enough PRLZ to start from where you lost at? 👇
I enjoyed it a lot, would consider myself a mega fan of both splatoon and roguelites, and it still was a bit of a slog. I didn’t expect them to be able to top octo expansion tho and it’s probably too much to expect a real strong or fleshed out roguelite experience from a multiplayer shooter dev team. There’s clearly some missed potential, the difficulty being reliant on having really low health instead of more challenging and exciting enemies/ obstacles stands out unfortunately (aside from the boss fight which is pretty fun with low health). It doesn’t do anything very outstanding and isn’t quite as replayable as it could be, but it did feel like a full dlc experience to be fair. 7/10 and I’d say that’s fairly generous for my tastes. Ty even though nobody will read this.
I thought the memcakes and their poems were from other sanitized octolings, not agent 8, hence the whole memverse being made to give octolings back their memcakes
One thing I really hope carries over into the next game is being able to get different colored hair tips in the normal game like how we got in side order, but with more customization for them since they wouldn’t be based of color chip amounts.
The hype for both Octo Expansion and Side Order killed any enjoyment I had with the DLCs. The only difference between the two are when I first played OE; I use to enjoy it, while SO was ok.
In my head, Order was/is a personification of Marina's feelings at the end of the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest that branched away from her while inside the Memverse and got stuck in its fear, while Marina grew and moved beyond it. I don't really have much evidence for that, but I think it fits.
Small correction on the risky rewards hack, it doesn’t turn off all your hacks, your other ones are active but the more you have active the lower your reward bonus is, going from x3 to x2.9 for one active and going as low as x1.1 for the lowest possible bonus. The active hacks don’t always remove the bonus by .1 sometimes you can add 2 or 3 hacks before your bonus goes down again I’m not sure if this is just based on number of hacks or types of hacks as well.
Going through with every weapon to get the keys was a really good time. It only got old when I got all of the chip upgrades. That over doubled my playtime and got super repetitive with the same bosses.
i wish they would add a second lap mode, where if you complete a run within a certain time limit, you get the option to start from the start but with everything you ended with, HOWEVER, the difficulty ramps up super fast, where after the floor 10 boss only rigorous stages appear, and after floor 20 every stage has a danger warning. with smolusk having 6 stages instead of 3 but near the end he basically spams stingray and reefslider only.
8:40 I think that was just meant to be pearl misunderstanding eight being confused as a way to give people who've started with splatoon 3 an explanation to who off the hook is
While Side Order might not have been the ultimate finale for the single player side of the games, it has opened up the franchise to more customization and experimentation with most of which Side Order gave. For the most part, everything in it was unique to a degree and felt way different than any of the other single players and gave a sort of breath of fresh air.
If they're gonna do something new for Splatoon 4's single-player, I'd love to see an open-world story. Not because I'm a huge open-world fan, but because I'm extremely interested in how they'd pull it off. I'd also like to see Side Order's roguelike elements/upgrade system incorporated into a new Salmon Run-esque multiplayer mode. Having a squad of four players fitted with color chips (or whatever the upgrades would be) would be amazing.
I think a Bowser's Fury-style semi-open world could be a lot of fun in Splatoon, an archipelago would also be a new & interesting setting for the series
in my opinion the way alterna and octo expansion were made were the best comparing to others, idk why but while playing alterna the music was out standing and i heard every piece, same with octo expansion, but for side order every music feels that much same, i didn't cared about the music, except for short order and ech0 0nslaughter, they were much more creative thence why i cared about them and didn't ignored them
Side order’s story seems to be a a lot simpler than most other single player modes. From 1, 2, 3, and Octo Expansion, we got to explore vast new areas! We’ve infiltrated Octarian bases in Octo Valley and Octo Canyon, navigated the underground rails of the Deep Sea Metro to escape to the surface, and discovered the last remains of human civilization that is Alterna! Each mode was a massive journey! Side Order though… we were just in a 30 floor tower. We’d constantly go back into that small elevator. It was optimal for replayability, but it soon felt small after playing more for a while.
Considering Lil’ Judd’s headset addition after defeating Mr. Grizz-meaning he took over Grizzco and is handling golden eggs now-is there a chance that we could get a second DLC for this game?
Another thing I wish they added is the ability to change the chip colour preferences on a palette after you reconfigure it. Wouldve been so cool to experiment with builds more freely, and without it we're stuck with what the devs chose; bit of a shame as they finally did give us kit customisation in this Overall though I loved the mode and got my money's worth out of it! 8/10 definitely feels right to me Havent played Octo expansion yet but I genuinely want to pick up Splatoon 2 just to play it and maybe try S2 Salmon~
honestly doing off color monochrome runs isn't that hard, all the chips have the same random % chance at default so i think you can experiment with builds extremely freely, i understand why it would be nice but i think its more fun that theres a slight challenge to trying off color runs (the biggest challenge is managing membucks lol)
also OE is super fun! i prefer it slightly to Side order, but mainly because the visuals, soundtrack, and overall story is better/more fun for me. I prefer SOs gameplay thoe :)
As much as i would love to have the story mode of future splatoon games being rougulite themed and taking as many good aspect from the hero modes as possible, I honestly doubt that they would be more than expanded tutorials disguised as a single player campaign. Taking Alterna for example, it is inspired on octo expansion and looks different from the other hero modes, but if you look very closely it’s still mostly training you on dealing with specific situations : like fast aim drill, that one wave breaker level, introduction to bow and splatana, curling and line marker training, dealing with bubbler, dealing with splatling/charger type enemies who have a better position, special training, specials that are subtely placed in situation where they exactly want to be (especialy in that one climbing section), levels built around weapons that are a bit tricky to get the hang of, all of wich in beetween classic "get to the goal" and gimmick levels (fog, soaker blocks ect...) and of course the bosses with mister Grizz intended to test your abbility to multi-task. And of course After Altera for the secret extra challenge. Now i’m not saying that Alterna is basic or a boring glorified tutorial, what i’m saying is that it managed to teach you the game while still being a good campaign but it still is a tutorial to prepare you for online play and that out of all the story modes, it’s the one who succeeds the most. And that format is what i expect future story modes (non DLC) to follow, an extensive tutorial that plays and feels like a solo campaign.
On the subject of Agent 4, my conspiracy theory is that there was originally meant to be four DLC waves (as was a big theory when DLC was first announced), and the fourth one would be a second story DLC starring Four. Unfortunately, even if that was the plan, it's unlikely to happen now with how much Side Order was delayed (unless the mythical content extension materializes, which I doubt) As for the future of Splatoon campaigns, I am a rare roguelike non-enjoyer so I hope that the main story mode doesn't follow Side Order's model. I had an okay time with it, but after the very cool stuff the first time you get to the top, getting all the keys mostly felt like busywork.
Some ideas from other Roguelikes I hope to see if they revisit this genre * challenge runs for each weapon after you beat them. For example, 1st challenge removes easy floors, second does the same and also increases the rate of danger floors, third challenge has all the previous and increases Jellyton spawn rates ect. Many Roguelikes do this. * have palettes that unlock after you beat a run under certain conditions. Having unlocks for the things that customize you help keep Roguelikes engaging * Add rarities to the palettes. Naturally the rarer one should be better. * Have more palettes that affect how you choose to play and what decisions you make and less what you can do directly. An example might be one that increases your speed and efficiency every time you pick a Danger stage. Another might be guaranteeing you get a double chip floor after you clear a rigorous floor.
I personally thought Octo Expansion was truly an excellent DLC, but Side Order was still fun and as enjoyable as you could've hoped for. Even if it's not better than OE, Side Order still has more untapped potential that can be wrought by us, the audience, and worth investing more of the core elements that made this DLC great. Aside from all of this, I enjoyed both of these DLCs and they're truly worth investing your time in as we approach the end of the saga. Stay Fresh ProChara
My thoughts on Side Order is that it's great! Wish there was a way to extend it more, 30F at a certain point actually feels short for me depending on the weapon. Standard Enemy Variety is something that works specifically for 30F for me tho, but only 3 bosses + the boss you fight at the tower definitely's kinda low tho, but I guess it's a good thing for 100% completionists- wait there's an upgrade that lets you re roll what a floor has, including boss floors... NEVER MIND lol. I have 100% Side Order, and have gotten the Golden Toothpick on two playthroughs of Octo Expansion, and my thought in comparison is that it depends on if you'll do multiple runs, your skill level, and how much you want a good story, because the story while good in my opinion is really short because it focuses on the Spire of Order more after a bit. Octo Expansion's extremely polished levels with a really engaging story feels better the whole way through, but it feels like there's a cap to how long you can play (unless you're a masochist or a speedrunner) But if you like Splatoon a lot and Rougelites and/or Rougelikes, then you should at least consider trying it out.
I 100% this and didn’t get bored. But now that I’ve done that I don’t have much motivation unless I’m thinking of trying to speed run with Marie’s charger
I really hope Nintendo is going to update it, not only there is so much more to be done in variety but also rogue likes are just kinda ment to be updated a little after release due to the freedom you give the players
I have to say, hard disagree on it being worth the $25. For that price, the original Hades is in your reach. Yes I know it’s an unfair comparison, but these were both first attempts at rogue likes and Nintendo is far bigger than suppergaint, even now a days
I do agree the issue is reparability which is a problem which is what they’re marketing on. 2 thing I feel could help: 1) 1 or 2 more objective to give more variety (I think your fine with same enemies) 2) Some challenge modifies to allow for more replay ability even after 100%
Side order is great in its own way but honestly I'd love to see some updates to it before whatever we get for 4 like, some form of special that increases the amount of chips you currently have by 1.5x or a few new bosses
For me, the most disappointing thing about this was the lack of a secret boss. I mean, there's an empty slot on the enemy list for gods sake. It just feels so natural especially after inner agent 3
I would be ecstatic if Splatoon 4 had a Side Order 2.0 and expanded upon what we got to the degree that it could stand alongside pvp and salmon run in terms of replayability. They’ve been doing great so far, looking forward to the future
Honestly, I wish there was an endless mode. I wish I could just stack all the chips and go forever. Just become crazy buffed and go as far as possible
And maybe after like every 5 floors you have to disable a certain number of hacks

Acht definitely didn’t like that. Wanna bet there’s now an Agent 8 x Acht ship?
@@tillllttt372 if it disgusts you, maybe you should stop playing since the game is full of queer people LMAO and ofc, Marina writing yuri comics about herself and pearl, them apparently sleeping in the same bed and marina being called "maiden in love" by the developers definitely shows that they're only supposed to be friends!(Sarcasm)
i feel like its hard to compare, in my opinion side order's gameplay is more fun but octo expansion's story is just SO good
Exactly my thought
Eh i preferred the gameplay and story of octo expansion compared to side order but theyre both really good
@@NotSnak I think Side Order has better gameplay but doesn't do enough with it.
I think the Jelletons are in a weird spot because, as mentioned above, more than a few are clearly just expies of certain Salmonids/Octarians, or otherwise mimic objects seen in PvP (such as the flying sprinklers or the eels using splashdown)
The tops, spawners/homing missiles, and the non-parallel canon bosses are the only enemies I'd say that feel entirely unique
@@OriginalGameteerAnd even then, Pinging Marciale is kinda just an alternate take on Octostomp in a lot of ways.
The transition to the spoiler section was fire🔥💯
Indeed
It did not, but it’s still good for what it is
One of my biggest complaints about side order is how limited it feels, there's so much potential in the side order style formula for more than what it ended up as.
Why no endless mode? Why the 30 chip cap, why no chip limit upgrades? Why no 3x chips, why no dual color chips? Why no difficulty increasing hacks? For a dlc designed to be "infinitely repayable" it feels so repetitive and limiting.
"3, 2, 1 Bye!!" Immediately hit by an ad 😂
1-2 hours for a full attempt? I've been doing each run in like 30-40 minutes?!?!
"How many times do you think we've climbed the Spire so far?"
"I dunno, I stopped keeping track after a while."
~Dialogue I saw after like, 3 runs into the Spire.
(They _really_ needed a better system for showing text, moments like that are so stupid.)
Your probably right just this weekend I finally got a new short order dialogue
@@kaden7466 New short order dialouge after toy 100% or before?
After 100 percent and going up to floor 30 at least like 25-30 times
Side Order is good but Side Order 2.0 is going to be awesome.
But Octo's underdog liberation story and deep sea vibes is going to be very hard to beat.
people really should be talking about how incredible this editing is. so cool
Well... you did.
Is it worth 25 bucks? I'd say yes, if you really love splatoon's gameplay. Is it better than Octo Expansion? ABSOLUTLY NOT!!!
Exactly
"For the same price, you could grab Hades." - scott falco
@The-guy-who-is-okay As someone who actually did play Hades I'd agree that it definitely has more content, but Splatoon's moment to moment gameplay is more interesting to me so I still ended up enjoying Side Order more. If you want a roguelite experience specifically then yeah just play Hades, but if you're looking for more Splatoon content then Side Order is definitely worth it.
I agree
Logi’s editing in this one went kinda crazy! The whole team clearly put a lot of love into this one
Side order: Gameplay
Octo expansion: Lore
I feel side order started with a big great idea and someone in Nintendo said, screw it, too dark, tone it
They way octo expansion is LORE AND GAMEPLAY and side order only gameplay …
Seriously I can’t wait what they gonna do with the next game. They got the quality down out right
Massive props to Chara and Logi for this beautifully edited video! This not only went over the topic of Side Order and Octo Expansion almost perfectly but was just a joy to watch!
Well Said, agree 100% Your videos are just getting better and better! 👍
Bro the editing is gone crazy. Whoever edited this deserves a raise, its so cool
Logi, says in the credits
But also this was a detailed review when like 55% of Chara's videos are scrims and 45% are tier lists, patch notes and weapon analysis, so not a lot of room to flex like in here
can't wait to be told no
My thing I wanted was more endgame hacks that make the game harder. An idea being a hack that gives 1.5x prlz upon tower completion, but bosses get harder
For floor 10, the bosses play as their floor 20 counterpart
For floor 20, each boss would get their own extra challenge
(Boss spoilers ahead)
Pinging Marciale: spawns in Homing Arpeggio’s on bumper hit and bumpers give off a wavebreaker wave when hit
Asynchronous Rondo: main layers (layers with lights) can only be damage when all layers below it are destroyed and bottom 2 layer spotlights are active as well. Spotlight attacks are also more powerful in their own ways (multiple toxic mysts at once, larger inkstrike, etc.)
Parallel Canon: no extra armor in middle and the opponents spawn in with 2 layers of armor. Their pearl drone also now copies the chips you have
Smollusk: portals and boss have more health. Extra attacks include the following:
booyah bomb radiating from smollusk, covering the entire middle of the map and destroying bombs like a normal booyah bomb
Summon 2 Parallel Canon enemies. They spawn with their special already ready (phase 2 and 3 attacks)
Toxic myst launcher. Tosses into the air a bunch of toxic mysts into the air which land around smollusk, similar to the chump attack (phase 3 attack only)
Thoughts?
my only gripe is the lack of a genuine hidden boss, thought there had to be something given the setting but im surprised there’s like, nothing.
Octo Expansion rewards:
- Cuttlefish gear set
- Neo Octoling (enemy) gear set
- Null Armor (8's armored gear) gear set
- C.Q. Cumber's counductor cap
- Golden Toothpick
- A *new playable race*, with *a brand new set of animations*
- The ability to spend unused CQ points on a vending machine (instantly converting them to rewards)
SO rewards:
- 8's gear
- Four headgear pieces (based on 8's "armor", the Pearl-drone, the Parallel Canon boss, and Marina's mind-control headset)
- The Splatoon 2 lobby
- "Order" reskins of weapons (replacing Hero weapons, curiously absent from Alterna but present in Splatoon 2)
- A handful of banners/titles
- 1 copy of several locker decorations
- A once-a-day conversion of Prlz to a random item (either money, a ticket, or another copy of the previously purchased locker items)
as a MASSIVE fan of rougelikes, side order was just. amazing for me. literally could not put it down until i basically 100% completed it
Same
I absolutely love the editing style, keep it up!!!
Maybe side order could even be better if there’s a few more stuff like more varient of floors, more bosses, maybe even an infinite tower like : more floors you moved, more important are the rewards at the end.
I hate how so many people are hating on this DLC just because it wasn't as dark or story-based as they hoped.
I personally would like Splatoon to try a collect-a-thon format for its next campaign. Exploratory Splatoon sounds like it could work.
Outro sorry*
I have a feeling that Splatoon 4's base campaign is going to be an easier version of Side order the same way Splatoon 3's base campaign was an easier version of Octo Expansion.
As a rougelike enjoyer (and player of splatoon 2), I bought splatoon 3 just to play this dlc. I had a few gripes with the dlc, mostly related to P12 being my least favorite weapon. It could have been cool if P12 was a toggle switch to play whatever weapon you want. shooters don't interest me that much.
p.s. as a returning splatoon player, it has been fun watching your content. keep up the good work.
for me its so good 9.5/10
as a rogue hater, i always think roguelike games are hard modes for hard core player. but side order is very fun to play as a casual. and turning off some hacks, it turns so challenging.
Keep it up!
THIS COMMENT RIGHT HERE!!!
@@ProChara yeah i forgot to mention the end, i 100% agree. one thing i'm curious about, though, is do you think there'll be a splatoon 4? fresh season (i think that's the season we're in currently, my fault if i'm wrong lol) is the second to last season in the 2-year live-service updates. what are your personal thoughts on splatoon in the future?
edit: i'm an idiot, just finished the video and heard your thoughts and couldn't agree more.
side order falls into the catagory of splatoon story mode where its fun to casually complete but 100%ing it will turn you into a rotten corpse
It’s infinitely better to 100% over splatoon 2’s campaign
That one takes forever and you have to do the same stages so many times
@@koveltskiis8391 at least you actually get stages lmao
I 100% agree with your opinion. It was good, but octo expansion was just better because like you said, it just doesn't get old like side orders does.
The editing is sooo good 😁
I love it projama 😻
For me I’d say yes. Octo Expansion is amazing obviously but imo the gameplay loop here is simply way more fun. My biggest critique of OE has always been that there were simply too many stages, or stages that feel too similar to one another. You can make a similar criticism of Side Order but to me all of the palettes being so different from one another build and gameplay wise makes the gameplay so much fresher. I had a blast getting 100% with limited hacks, and I’m looking forward to optimizing my runs even further in the coming months.
Yeah the stages in OE are very simple if you think about it
I like that the gameplay loop is fun and mindless.
(SPOILERS)
i did not expect Chara to start talking about pearlina going into this but it was so needed
Yeah it was really based

I’m shacked that you played space paranoids from kingdom hearts 2 I love the kingdom hearts series and it made me happy
The presentation on this video was phenomenal
They really let logi cook with the editing on this video 💯🗣️
Ok but like 'souv3nir' goes unreasonably hard. My favorite splatoon track bar none
Truly the best
The hype for both Octo Expansion and Side Order killed any enjoyment I had with the DLCs. The only difference between the two are when I first played OE; I use to enjoy it, while SO was ok.
In my head, Order was/is a personification of Marina's feelings at the end of the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest that branched away from her while inside the Memverse and got stuck in its fear, while Marina grew and moved beyond it. I don't really have much evidence for that, but I think it fits.
Smollusk is best character, change my mind
I absolutely cannot wait for modders to start doing what they do best for this now that I've 100%ed this dlc
I really like how they tried something new for this dlc. I hope they keep making unique dlc’s in the future.
Why are you making me choose!! Side order is so fun but the octo expansions story was so entertaining
“Each attempt takes 1-2 hours to beat” my best is 26 minutes
my best is 6 :41
If they're gonna do something new for Splatoon 4's single-player, I'd love to see an open-world story.
I think a Bowser's Fury-style semi-open world could be a lot of fun in Splatoon, an archipelago would also be a new & interesting setting for the series
in my opinion the way alterna and octo expansion were made were the best comparing to others, idk why but while playing alterna the music was out standing and i heard every piece, same with octo expansion, but for side order every music feels that much same, i didn't cared about the music, except for short order and ech0 0nslaughter, they were much more creative thence why i cared about them and didn't ignored them
I really do wish the Order Replica kits had their tower kits, that would've been so fucking cool.
I really enjoyed the doc but it really suffered from not having an endless mode
Its below Return of the Mammalians for me.
I think more standard "Just get to the end" levels would've realy benefitted the DLC. Kinda why I like SteamrollerFloor
Another thing I wish they added is the ability to change the chip colour preferences on a palette after you reconfigure it. Wouldve been so cool to experiment with builds more freely, and without it we're stuck with what the devs chose; bit of a shame as they finally did give us kit customisation in this
Overall though I loved the mode and got my money's worth out of it! 8/10 definitely feels right to me
Havent played Octo expansion yet but I genuinely want to pick up Splatoon 2 just to play it and maybe try S2 Salmon~
honestly doing off color monochrome runs isn't that hard, all the chips have the same random % chance at default so i think you can experiment with builds extremely freely, i understand why it would be nice but i think its more fun that theres a slight challenge to trying off color runs (the biggest challenge is managing membucks lol)
also OE is super fun! i prefer it slightly to Side order, but mainly because the visuals, soundtrack, and overall story is better/more fun for me.
Unfortunately, even if that was the plan, it's unlikely to happen now with how much Side Order was delayed (unless the mythical content extension materializes, which I doubt)
As for the future of Splatoon campaigns, I am a rare roguelike non-enjoyer so I hope that the main story mode doesn't follow Side Order's model. I had an okay time with it, but after the very cool stuff the first time you get to the top, getting all the keys mostly felt like busywork.
I would love an arcade type multiplayer where you get to play a completed side order palette of your choice against others.
11:26 Do you know that those are just hero weapons but in red, right?
i think the octo octobrush is going to be called octo brush not the same but just a space between octo and brush (if that ever hapens)
Some ideas from other Roguelikes I hope to see if they revisit this genre
* challenge runs for each weapon after you beat them. For example, 1st challenge removes easy floors, second does the same and also increases the rate of danger floors, third challenge has all the previous and increases Jellyton spawn rates ect. Many Roguelikes do this.
* have palettes that unlock after you beat a run under certain conditions. Having unlocks for the things that customize you help keep Roguelikes engaging
* Add rarities to the palettes.
"to beat it on the first try is extremely difficult"
this, coming from the guy who beat it first try.
The entire series definitely gets the highest number you can get a 11 out of 10
I personally thought Octo Expansion was truly an excellent DLC, but Side Order was still fun and as enjoyable as you could've hoped for.
Octo Expansion's extremely polished levels with a really engaging story feels better the whole way through, but it feels like there's a cap to how long you can play (unless you're a masochist or a speedrunner)
But if you like Splatoon a lot and Rougelites and/or Rougelikes, then you should at least consider trying it out.
13:37 wish in splatoon 4 we have mix of side order and splatoon 2 and 3 main story mode.
2 thing I feel could help:
1) 1 or 2 more objective to give more variety (I think your fine with same enemies)
2) Some challenge modifies to allow for more replay ability even after 100%
Side order is great in its own way but honestly I'd love to see some updates to it before whatever we get for 4 like, some form of special that increases the amount of chips you currently have by 1.5x or a few new bosses
12:59 Oh crap, you're right! 😱
Thank you for reminding me. I've completely forgot. 😅
Octo Expansion is a God DLC
For me, the most disappointing thing about this was the lack of a secret boss. I mean, there's an empty slot on the enemy list for gods sake. It just feels so natural especially after inner agent 3
Imo Nintendo should add a way to add chips yiu have unlocked to your pallet in the testing area before going up in the elevator
I would be ecstatic if Splatoon 4 had a Side Order 2.0 and expanded upon what we got to the degree that it could stand alongside pvp and salmon run in terms of replayability. They’ve been doing great so far, looking forward to the future
octo expansion is my goat forever🙏🙏
