When Caballe performed the first couple of Norma's Maria sent her a pair of diamond earrings and told her" Wear these every time you sing Norma I always did." MONSE stated in an interview that she could never wear those earrings because to her Maria was the greatest of all time Norma with tears in her eyes & still in Normas coustom. Listen to the recording of this with Muti conducting on EMI. I never know where I am in this opera, the plot is so confusing, and I don't really care because the music is so gorgeous. But at the climax of the big choral piece on the 2nd CD - Track 8 or 9 I think it is, Caballe hits this soaring pianissimo at the end of Oh Vieni al tempio I think it is, that is as exquisite as anything she ever did in my humble opinion.
She was an amazing soprano ... RIP ... shame she never sang high Eb's .... But, after listening to her, I got over my need for note thrills .... Her 1968 Lucrezia was just astounding ... the immense power and beautiful pianissimos .... we will never see singers of the caliber of Caballe, Callas, Sutherland again
...and she's such a sweetie, too. Take a look at her BBC interview with Bernard Levin; I just put up the 2 parts Onegin65 skipped. She says she could never be a "Norma;" 4 years later she gave that exquisite performance at Theatre Antique d'Orange.
Caballe had the most beautiful voices of all the soprano divas.Although Callas is most associated with emotional intensity, in this I hear Caballe’s heartfelt poignancy. Her glissandos starting at 6:37 are effortless.
So weak in all registers except upper middle, high registers... I heard her in recital in France in 1984, horrible, no voice.. she didn't know which simple she was supposed to sing , confused... it was a flop, unprofessional... waste of money.. sang no arias, simple songs...
