    In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to make a Peony flower using gumpaste / sugar paste.
    For more dessert inspiration and tutorial sneak peaks, visit me on:

    / rosiesdessertspot
    / rosiesds
    I have used Satin Ice gumpaste for this and fondant which I had previously coloured electric pink and teal, using Americolour gel food colours.
    I have used a 22 gage wire in the making of these peony's and have dipped the bud in gold mica powder (unfortunately I didn't realize my SD card was full and had stopped recording at that point gosh darn it!) but it was as simple as a lazy dip in the container and boom, a gorgeous centre piece. Note: do not dip your bud all the way into your gold powder or your petals won't stick to the base of your bud as the powder acts as a "non stick" surface after that.
    My next video tutorial will feature these pretties, so stay tuned for that video tutorial coming out sometime this week! ...3rd May, 2015...
    I like to add little sneak peak / previews into my instagram and facebook pages so you're welcome to check those out for some spoilers into future videos. See you soon guys and thank you for watching!

    I don't usually leave TH-cam comments (this is my first TH-cam one ever, lol), but I had to for this video! Loved the way you made these peonies with basic tools. I had just finished watching the Wilton one before I saw yours and was thinking, wow I have to go to the store AGAIN for all the unique tools. Love the use of foil into the shaping bowls and the way you add the wire. Thanks so much for sharing!!

    So refreshing to see something so easy and straightforward. I’ve been looking at a few youtube clips for Penny’s and they are full off tools and equipment that even myself as a professional cake maker, would’nt purchase as you use them so rarely. You can get the same results with a little bit of initiative that you Rosie, always seem to manage so well! Thank you xx

      You are very welcome. You've got such a talent for this. Have you ever used polymer clay? I can only imagine the beautiful creations you could make with that. It's similar to using fondant and gum paste as far as rolling, cutting and forming flowers. I just started using polymer clay making jewelry and flowers and such and couldn't believe the similarities where that's concerned.

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      haha thanks for the faith in my ability ;) I have seen videos of people forming miniature things out of polymer clay, it looks amazing! I had no idea you can make jewellery out of it though, that's awesome. Imagine all the beautiful jewlery you could make using silicone moulds and polymer clay!

    Amazing! I 've tried to do the same but I didn't get the same result. I think my gumpaste is not good enough so which one you've used and when i can get it. And what is fondant and why shal i mix it whith the gumpaste.
    Thank you for your answer.

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Houda El Fatimi, mixing the gumpaste with the fondant is just a personal preference. Gumpaste makes the fondant easier to work with, more elastic, reduces the chances of the edges fraying when you're thining out the edge of the flower petal and it also saves on costs (using just gumpaste can be expensive, so mixing gumpaste with fondant (which is cheaper and is just a sugar dough you should be able to buy from your grocery store) can save on costs). Hope that helps! let me know if you have any more questions :)

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      samira motaghed thanks! I used rose water, which is just alcohol. You can mix the gold powder with vodka as well for example. We use alcohol because it evaporates and leaves behind the strong "painted" look.

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gordana W, I can't say I have had experience with this problem, although I know adding Tylose Powder can really help your flowers to dry in record time, so that would be a great option I think :) even in humid climates it should still help you out considerably. Hope that helps!

  • @dracocamacho
    @dracocamacho 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    hi! I also used Satin Ice Gum paste for my peonies but had a problem with it. I made peony petals and dried them about a week already, it hardened but when exposed to room temp. it softened and the petals fell off.
    my local baking supply store suggested i should use tylose powder which I did. I made flowers again and I even used more than what is necessary thinking it would stabilize. but still it softens once exposed to room temp.
    do you have any tip how to stabilize them even though when exposed to high room temp? I live in a tropical country and temperature is really a huge factor. thanks in advance! :)

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey +dracocamacho, I'm sorry to hear that :( it could be the brand of gumpaste you are using, which may not have the right ingredients to work in super humid environments. Have you tried adding extra corn starch as well as the tylose powder? and do you normally try to dry it at room temperature as well? how long do you normally leave it to dry out for? I have looked up the problem and it seems like others have had the same experience as you. This thread might help: www.cakecentral.com/forum/t/648860/help-gum-paste-wont-dry

    • @dracocamacho
      @dracocamacho 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rosie's Dessert Spot I did add cornstarch as well... i dried it about a week already, but still, it softens.

    I have a question ? The tape that was used to cover the wire, is that safe to use on the cake?

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey butterfly10245, there are mixed opinions on whether floral tape is safe to insert inside a cake. To be on the safe side, I would recommend inserting the floral taped wire into a straw and then putting it inside the cake so there's a barrier between the cake and the tape (even though in this video I put the flower directly into the cake. Just depends whether or not you trust the floral tape).

  • @satirical7

      Hey +leen tabbaa, water has been known to get messy and doesn't dry off as quickly, but you could give it a shot. If alcohol is the issue, then have you heard of rosewater? Some rosewater contains alcohol and others don't. Rosewater works well mixed with gold dust :)

      Hi +Nuno Ribeiro, you could even use regular rose petal cutters and then cut the edges so they are a little jagged. Otherwise, maybe a large scallop circle cutter, and then you cut off the excess so you have a tear drop shape with the larger end of the petal scalloped... I hope I made sense!!

      Ariana E You could if you like. I generally only use gumpaste for figurines and flowers because it is much easier to work with compared to fondant. It doesn't fray / break as easily and holds shape much better than fondant. Gumaste is also easier to use with silicone moulds. However, I wouldn't use gumpaste to cover a cake or for decorations where fondant would suffice, for example little balls / pearls / rocks to boarder a cake. Plus fondant is less expensive than gumpaste, which is another factor to consider when tossing up between using fondant or gumpaste :) it could cost you as little as $5 for example to cover a cake using fondant or minimum $18 if you use gumpaste (based on Australian prices, 1kg packs that I've come across)

    can this be done without wires? i don't have any

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      dellamoore25 hey hun, unfortunately for this effect you would need wires. you could always treat it like a rose and wrap each petal around the centre and flare out the outer, larger petals. it would appear like more of a rose, but it will still create a pretty flower.

    what brand of gold dust is that

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Colez The gold dust in the middle of the bud is Gold Diamond by Creative Cake Decorating (a brand in Australia, but I think they might also be available overseas, will have to double check that for you. I already e-mailed her x) and the gold dust I painted with is made by a shop called Suzie Q, they sell little viles with their name on it so I assume they make it themselves.

    How long do they petals take to dry?

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi +Sue Warso, if you can, I would let them dry overnight at least. If you are in a rush, I would suggest adding in some tylose powder and letting them dry for at least 4 to 8 hours before handing them / putting the flower together.

    what's the difference between gum paste and fondant, and is gum paste edible? thank u

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Irene, yes gumpaste is edible as well. It's sturdier / more elastic than fondant and is normally used for making figurines because it is just that much more stable.

    Hi! You put a colored fondant into a gum past, can't you add a color directly into gumpaste ?

    • @Rosiesdessertspot
      @Rosiesdessertspot  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nuneh, yes you can do that as well. Gel and powdered colours work best.
