Yeah I almost think the Genera takes out too much. Am I the only one who finds it strange the Genera takes out more tone than the Genera HD or HD Dry? How does that work? Drums are weird sometimes.... In this video I actually feel like those hydraulics came out really well. Very nice combo of control but still with some tone. I actually expected them to sound "boxier." Those things are nice.

This really was an impressive video/videos. Sure lessons are good and extremely useful..... With that said there are lots of them. No on has done a video like this that I have ever seen. You truly have done something amazing here. More videos like these with toms, bass drum, and other brands of drum heads are just what the drum community needs and will always need. Once they are made I don't see how someone else will ever have the need to try to duplicate. There will be no need and you will not only have the first ones ever made but the ONLY ones!!! Thank you!

I'm not sure... The guys at Evans are so easy to work with and they really support what we do at Drumeo. I have never heard from anyone at Remo so I'm not sure they even know we exist.

Drumeo Common Remo! Get a rep to call Jared up!. I personally like the sounds of the clear Remo Emperors and the Ebony Emperors. But the kick has to be an Evans Emad. Will you be doing a comparison video of the kick batter heads next? I've always wanted to hear the difference between the Emad1, Emad2, and Gmad.

  • @deekerr1613
    @deekerr1613 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Just adding a touch of extra knowledge from experience: the difference between the power center and the power center reverse dot is that the standard has higher overtones (kinda funky sounding) and the reverse dot has lower overtones (more rock and roll). The Hydraulic series heads have air bubbles that sound different (worse) than the head so if you hit them by accident your playing can sound a little inconsistent. The EC1 Reverse Dot tends to be way wetter than it sounds in the video at most tuning (maybe not the so much the one he used) but I found it tended to need dampening for any tuning lower than the demonstration in the video. The hybrid series drum heads are made for marching/field drums but there is one available that's a little more tailored for drum set, it is coated (as opposed to just having texture from the fibers), is nicer sounding at lower than marching tunings and is slightly more durable (due to the coating) so it can withstand even harder hits on even lower tunings. This is just my personal experience, I've owned one of each of those heads (plus an onyx but it sounded dead on) so you can take my word for this. However if anyone has had any contradicting experiences then please reply with them. I don't mind being wrong (I'm just trying to help people only have to buy one head to get what they're looking for and save money).

I remember an individual who chose to use a certain snare drum as his primary snare that he loved but musically it sounded completely out of place with any songs he played to. Other people approached me about this problem. It was a learning experience for me to remember that the snare drum should fit the music even if I like other types better. Love your program and appreciate your help.

I love this video. I purchased a Dialtune snare drum (awesome) and aside from using a dial to change tuning in mere seconds, it allows you to change the head in under a minute. I've got a G1, Calftone and HD Genera Dry already. Every head in the video sounds pretty darn good to me. Hopefully I won't let my collection get out of hand but I can't make any guarantees.

One that sounds like a total beast for metal music is Evans Black Chrome, although it's not technically a "snare head". A ton of volume and very nice crack that cuts through the guitar wall easily with good definition. Not suitable for lighter music or brushes, but for heavier stuff...it's a killer! Waiting for the tom series, as those are next to be updated on my kits. Thanks for these and props for being featured on the front page of Evans!

This was so helpful! I have a beginners Rogue drum set and want to upgrade all the heads from the original stock heads. I figured I’d start with the snare. I feel so much more knowledgeable about what I like! I’ve been a little frustrated at how a lot of drum videos say to just get what sounds good to you/tune your drums to the pitch you like, but I have little to no knowledge of what actually sounds GOOD let alone what my personal preference is. So these comparison videos are opening up my whole world! I liked the Genera HD Dry and the Hydraulic Black best. Now to decide which one to buy first!

I really liked the Genera it was a nice full sound that didn't ring out too much. Right now I'm using the Remo White Suede on my snare and it gives a full sound but rings a little too much. I use remo ebony's on my toms and use white coated on the resignation side. And I use ebony's on my bass and floor tom as well. I also have a 14" zbt hihat, a 16" zbt crash, an 18" K custom crash ride, and a 20" zbt ride.It all sounds amazing except my snare which is probably the most important. Thanks for making this video Jared.

I think you should do a tom head demo...
well 3 toms, with every head and two heads a pop would take forever.
So maybe consider pick a common size, and demoing all the batters on that one size. And either use a single reso head (constant), or no reso head for all of the tests.
sorry if this is a huge work load.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the snare choice - but at the same time a really bright snare really exaggerates the difference between each heads affect on the over all EQ of snare.
I wish I Saw this sooner.

my suggestion is put some interactive aspects to the video.. so what that means is by the use of annotations have a time table at the bottom or top of the video for every single snare drum head so people can compare certain heads directly by pushing annotations, instead of searching exactly for the right time and mistakingly listening to other drum heads.
    good video btw! thanks!!

It might just be me, but they all sound very similar, non of them have much in the way of low end, they're all very treble heavy.. I've always played Remo PS3's and never had a problem, but thought I'd check out this video to see if I was missing anything. I bet this took a looooong time to film so cheers for that! :)

Since this video aired, Evans Drumheads Div., J. D'Addario & Co., developed a new model: The B14UV1, which packs an ultraviolet-cured top coating intended for better durability than existing coatings. Tone should be in the ballpark of the B14G1 and B14GEN.

G1 coated and Onyx sounded exactly the same to me. Also both of those seem to alow me to here the most ring from the shell than the others. That way a tone ring could tame it on some songs and no tone ring at all for wide open sound for other songs. The most versatile. ALSO 30 years ago when I tried the Hydraulic heads I remebered they had a thud dead sound but here it didn't sound bad at all. I may try one once more after hearing it on this video. My thoughts back then were that the Hydraullic heads were only good for crap drum with bad un-even bearing edges

I switched to Evans heads years ago (from Remo) and the sound quality was so much better. Unfortunately, I found that after two weeks I couldn't get a good sound out of them (especially the toms). I have not dared to try Evans again as I have never been in a position to replace heads that frequently. I now play Aquarian as I find these a great balance between sound and durability.

Yes, but these videos take a long time to film and edit. I have the bass drum ones done and they'll launch next. After that I have to film the tom videos. My hands get super sore from changing so many heads in one day so I take breaks in between shooting the videos :)

Please, oh PLEASE do the Toms video! On the side note, I hope you won't mind me telling this - but I hope there won't be any differences in mic positioning since it would make a huge (and deceptive) impact on the sound. Thank you in advance! Your channel is a great inspiration to us all!

This is a GREAT video!. I listened and studied with intent (and headphones)...It helped me a TON...
For me...Genera HD for the win!. Just beat out the G2, which is pretty ringy, the ST, with still just a little too much ring, and the HD dry which is just a little too dry...for me anyway.
The Genera HD's got just the right amount of everything with just a little bit of ring, lots of power and good bottom. Stoked! 🎶🎵🔥💥

I have a pearl sensitone steel snare. It's not a high class snare but it gets the job done. I knew of the hybrid snare head because i used it in marching band. But I didn't know Evans made a coated version of it and drummers have been using it as a Set snare head. Awesome head. But it's $40-50 depending where you get it from. I guess the perks of it costing that much is it's durability. I need that head. lol
