La ‘Sant Andreu Jazz Band’ se ha convertido en un proyecto educativo muy especial que suma ya 12 años de trayectoria imparable. Se trata de una Big Band con chicos y chicas, niños y adolescentes, que rompe el tópico de que el jazz es muy intelectual y sólo para minorías. El impulso del músico y profesor Joan Chamorro, director de la banda, ha hecho de este proyecto un ejemplo a seguir en todo el mundo.

Me encanta la banda y la escucho a diario, y a veces me hace llorar porque yo quise ser cantante cuando era pequeña, además siempre me ha gustado el jazz, soul, bossa nova etc. Ojalá hubiera tenido un profe como Joan, estoy segura de que otro gallo hubiera cantado. Solo me queda escuchar a estos pedazo de artistas y disfrutar de su música. Ojalá pueda ver a la banda en vivo algún día! Un abrazo y buen trabajo, maestro. Con este hombre sí que sería un lujo irse de cañas, lo que tiene que saber!

Thank you for this video, with the help of the captions translation, it is nice to understand all the work that has gone into this project. Este es el fenómeno de Jazz más inspirador que he encontrado a mis casi 60 años. No puede haber una combinación más perfecta de elementos, sobretodo la visión, el genio y carisma de Joan Chamorro, como músico, como pedagogo y como aunador de todas esas energías para que crezcan y fluyan paralelas. Tengo la impresión de que muchos tratarán de copiar esta fórmula, pero este tipo de fenómenos son únicos y solo existe un Joan Chamorro. Saludos desde Holanda

Hay que darle las gracias al profesor Joan Chamorro por la visión que tiene con este tipo de género musical, el jazz, el bossa-nova, el blues, etc. se puede ver como ayuda a sus estudiantes a triunfar por ellos mismos sin esperar ser Joan el único que se lleva el crédito. Mis felicitaciones por sus canciones y sus grandes arreglos.
This is a great video that explains what Joan is all about. I understand Spanish but am not as proficient in expressing myself in it, so I'll make my remarks in English. Joan is really good at teaching young people in music and the idea behind jazz. He explains that they don't have to have the adult experience in order to express themselves as young people. He explains so much more but I won't get to all of that.

I know this is an older video, and I know very little Spanish. But it is fun watching you working with your young musicians and seeing your and their enthusiasm for the music. I also salute you for having your singers sing the United States songs in English. To me it means that you understand the relationship between the words and the music. It also means that your young singers are learning about that special relationship. I also enjoy hearing the songs that you do in Spanish. Bravo to and your students.

Love the Sant Andreu Jazz Band ❤️. I wish I knew how to speak Spanish, so I could understand what they are saying. I just thankful I got to see Andrea Motis Quintet and meet most of them.❤️
What I feel that the youngsters take from Joan is his energy and enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is infectious so any age difference melts away and they get to share his obvious love for this genre of music, and its very beguiling for onlookers like us to watch and want to share in the whole experience.
Jazz to me is a collaborative musical effort that speaks directly to the individual. I think that's the secret to this international language. It's wonderful to see and hear these young people pour themselves into the music.

Siento una envidia increíble, tengo 17 años toco el piano y es lo único por lo que he sentido pasión en esta vida, me flipa el jazz y también opino como estos chicos, que la gente de hoy en día no sabe valorar el jazz, la bossa nova, la música clásica...
Una vez tuve la suerte de ir a un crucero en el que había una banda de jazz abajo tocando, literalmente me emocione un montón viéndolos y ahora solo de recordarlo se me aguan los ojos. Vivo en Tenerife pero aquí es imposible que alguien te enseñe sobre jazz y por eso es que siento envidia.
Necesito que alguien me guíe por donde empezar, ya que uno de mis sueños siempre ha sido tocar en una banda de jazz.
Y ahora que he descubierto que esto esta ocurriendo en España y no en Brasil (ya que te descubrí por las interpretaciones de Andrea Motis y Rita Payés de algunos clásicos de bossa nova) ha sido como un rayo de esperanza, pero aun así me parece que por el lugar en el que vivo estoy condicionado...
...pues muevete ;-) es todavia dentro de tu Pais... los valientes se llevan el premio!

Es una banda que encanta, que produce adicción, pq te traspasa su compromiso y amor por el jazz. Se fué alojando bajo mi piel en la medida que los fuí descubriendo, hace ya unos cuantos años.

A fascinating video even to someone who doesn't understand the language. Joan, after watching the way you direct and interact with your kids it's easy to understand why the band sounds so good. You must be the best youth band director anywhere.
I'm afraid I don't understand the language either, but I find the SAJB fascinating, and I enjoy seeing how it all comes together. I've watched Ramon Tort's film "Kids and Music" from 2012 twice, and while there are two American musicians discussing their impressions of the band, the rest is in Catalan(?) or Spanish. Still, I very much recommend it! You can see Andrea, Eva, and Magali when they were still so young--not to mention an even younger Alba and Elsa Armengou!

Gaylord Buzzard: Other fans, including myself, have grumbled about the dearth of English sub-titles, but it's not easy. As a film and TV producer with substantial experience of 're-versioning' videos in foreign languages, I can say with some authority that it's a bit of a minefield. First, who owns the film? In this case it seems to be the Spanish radio and television broadcaster RTVE. So legally, it can't be changed in any way without their permission. Inserting sub-titles that they haven't approved would be regarded as a breach of their copyright and Joan Chamorro, who is the registered owner of this TH-cam channel, would be liable. Second, as I'm sure you know, translating is not a simple matter of substituting one English word for one in Spanish or Catalan. Translation is a highly skilled job requiring a deep understanding of both languages and the subject-matter. Just look at the mess Google makes, when trying to auto-translate subtitles live, on this video! However, the good news is that technically it's not difficult. You produce a translated text with time codes to indicate where each line starts and finishes ... and Bob's your uncle! Joan Chomorro or his web manager uploads it to this site and 'English' appears as an option in the sub-titles. R (Australia)

Wow. Impresionante ver y escuchar a estos músicos tan jóvenes tocar tan bien. Tremenda labor del maestro. Felicidades a todos.
Es difícil expresar lo que significa, lo que estáis consiguiendo casi sin daros cuenta, con total naturalidad, como debería ser.
Pero resulta que sois mas raros que un perro verde. ¿Por qué esto no viene sucediendo desde hace tiempo en todos los lados?,
¿Qué veneno nos han dado?, ¿Cómo nos han abducido?
Como dicen en el vídeo da envidia, de la sana, ver lo que tenéis desde la ventanita. Lo descubrí hace un año y no paro de asomarme y asombrarme. Aprovechadlo, luchadlo y disfrutadlo.
Animo a quién quiera que crea que tiene capacidad y oportunidad de hacer algo similar, donde quiera que esté. El mundo necesita muchos Joanes y Andreas para ser un lugar mejor.

Was wondering about al the work and rehearsing. Can't understand a word but enjoyed seeing the practice, very much. Have a good friend and love to watch him conduct a local college symphony, he's also retired Boston Symphony Cellist.
If JOAN and his incomparable young artists did nothing but sing or recite or play the lyrics to “ Ninety-nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall” I swear I would listen to every word and note, and be sincerely grateful for the experience.

It really is about time this band made an appearance at the world's greatest music festival - The BBC Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall - Too late for this year but there may be time for something to be organised for 2019 ... Very sorry to say this but this genre of music does not sit well in the BBCs rather restricted musical agenda so they are very unlikely to broadcast in any programme. Punk yes, garage music yes, heavy metal yes, any rock and pop, yes. etc etc. but young musicians in Jazz - no chance. Hence I never tune into BBC music programmes now. TH-cam however is rather more eclectic. And of course it is another reason why we are totally cheesed off with being forced
to pay for the BBC.

@@Signals927 What about Ronnie Scott's Club? how often do you hear broadcasts from there? Compere BBC TV music coverage with Spanish TV which has done major broadcasts featuring the Sant Andrau Jazz school performing for very large audiences on several; occasions, unthinkable for the BBC.

I so wish this video had subtitles in English. I don't understand a word of what is being said. And that's a shame, because this video seems to explain so much of Joan Chamarro's amazing teaching skills.
Mr Chamorro has put on weight as he aged. If these young musicians are those kids grown up and stick with him over the years, what a great music educator and mentor he is. Solutes!
