  • OldSchool RuneScape Will Fade if Jagex Keeps Ignoring This
    F2P OldSchool RuneScape is full of bots. Questing bots, merching bots,
    fishing bots, woodcutting bots, mining bots, and so many more.
    New players test F2P to see if they enjoy the game, and this is what
    they see. If Jagex does not act, potential players will continue
    to be turned off from the game.

      Thats what kinda keeps me up at night, is that most people just play 2-3 accs at once minimum, myself included, plus all the bots online at any given moment, even right after an update. Really appreciate you calling this to attention. I'm appreciative of all that Weath does, but he can't stop a problem this big alone. Jagex (or their investors) really needs to invest in the long term health of their game and give him a dedicated team to fix the issue. A bot nuke would make me happier than any content update.

    • @checkyourfax
      @checkyourfax 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The only real way of combating this long term is making a C++ client, not Java. Java classes can too easily be deobbed and injected into. Bots on a C++ client are way more costly to make and sometimes not profitable enough to even try. Jagex is wholly owned by Tencent: they have the money to make this happen.

    • @reilem
      @reilem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@checkyourfax Not a bad idea, and I think that it would initially slow bot development down, but once someone creates a bot-making toolkit it would just start back up again. And the guy maintaining the toolkit would probably make even more money. This is just a typical arms race, and Jagex can do little to predict the future of botting. I think the best they can do is keep up to date with new bots, and hire more people to hunt them and patch them before they can do too much harm.
      There's also a huge cost involved in recoding something massive like RS. Would probably take years, and require dozens of new devs that can actually code in C++. And in that time mistakes will be made and bugs introduced that might harm the game even more. So it's gonna be a trade-off.

      But there is no way to stop bots forever it will always be a back and forth fight. Even if there was no irl profit for gold farmers which I don't think they could control. People would still bot for fun and bot to level accounts or to advertise or troll. Maybe if nobody knew about the game to begin with then there could be no botting, but as soon as something becomes popular like RuneScape has for so many years it becomes a Target for the curious scripter or for those who want to test their skills or see a business opportunity.

      @@checkyourfax Jagex only just recently fully removed Java support on rs3 and now fully utilizes C++. They've had a really good antibot system since before NXT (rs3 C++ client) was even mentioned, let alone in beta. I'm not sure why they haven't been able to carry rs3's antibot system over to OSRS. It's not Java that's the issue. My guess is that it's the amount of players that are actually bot accounts, removing bots might lower the player number enough that it would be financially damaging to Jagex.

      bad part about that is all the botter has to do is get them to not pick up clay then its back to full progress then the bank bots that pick up the clay would have to run a diffrent code thats all, someone who is running this level of bot could change that code and implement the change in like 1-2 hours maybe faster so this will only work for like 2-3 days till they notice there bots aren't making as much as the week before then they just go back to working again

      The whole system is screwed. If youre a legit player you realize that the only reason you are playing is for yourself as there's no competition anymore. The people who spend the most money on private scripts, private servers, and invest all their in-game time into farming gold on multiple suicide chars, laundry the gp, rinse and repeat once banned, are what ruins the game for everyone. People spend $100s of dollars just to ruin the game lol. Don't think that most of the people botting are successful entrepreneurs making $100k a year, they're losers. It wouldn't even bother me so much if someone botted one char for personal skills but the economy is no fun and Jagex ultimately loses out on building a potentially much larger community.

      We used to have the same issue in RS3. What changed, whether through dev intention or not, was that raw materials were injected into PVM under common and uncommon rolls. Herbs, Fish, and Logs are regular drops in our updated GWD. I know that Zulrah had a massive nerf to combat this from happening in OSRS though. What allows for this to be balanced in RS3 is the sheer item sinks we have in our game. An entire skill is built around literally destroying materials in bulk. Bots were decimated. Unfortunately, I think Osrs will have to accept a new item sink skill to get on the right path.

DUring the quest there needs to be a dozen captcha objectives in each quest as well as randomized from a pool of many captchas. The new accounts also should have a drop restriction. The drop restriction should destroy items if that player drops items without having done this captcha quest. So that takes care of drop trading, forces bot makers to have to do the captchas. Sure, it might make grinding easy money strats harder cause there's less worlds to jump to, but if you thanos-snap most of the bots, then there should be more available resources for free players. A-has the large cash stack and trades it in "small amounts" to different bots(B)
    B-gets cash from A and runs it over to C, as a middle man
    C- gets cash from all the bots, so the Main bots with max cash stacks dont get busted, but the middle en with like 10m orso is more likely to

    I think it’s hilarious how this economic dilemma is comparable to that of slavery.
    It’s detrimental to most people because their “wages” and “job opportunity” are greatly diminished by the bots (slaves), but it’s very lucrative for the very rich and powerful of the game because it keeps their costs artificially low.
    I don’t think this would fuck the economy to the extent people think. It would make training far more skills an actually profitable endeavor and by doing so make the game far more than what it is currently. That’s a good thing. Woodcutting, fishing, mining, etc would all be far more profitable and enjoyable since its not just grinding skills, you’re also making reasonable money now too.
    Noobies are far more likely to stay because they will have far more economic mobility as well so it’s very likely this is actually a net good in terms of active player base.

The RWT issue has been around for as long as I've been playing (around 2003-2004). I think if they made it so that 1) anyone who buys GP gets an immediate ban (possibly even IP ban). 2) if they can somehow claim rights or damages because of companies doing this, we could make some progress.

    I am an old player. When I first came back to osrs a few years ago it was very difficult to train in f2p so I ended up just buying a membership to have less competition for resources and more places to go. Fast forward to November of 2019, I wanted a new challenge so I made a f2p hardcore ironman. Normal ironman mode is hard enough in terms of getting resources to train, yet on top of hours of work you need to do to get the resources, you also have to compete with bots for them. Mining/smithing and crafting are the most horrendous that I've seen. Bots mine everything up to iron it seems. I've only begun to find peace when mining silver at the Varrock west mine. Worlds are full with cow killer bots so its harder to get hides. I've since abandoned the project because competition for resources was too difficult. I managed to get to a point where I could use things that bots didn't dominate but at that point the previous battle with bots had made me not want to continue. I'm still on my main and plan to make a group ironman when it comes out. I can only pray to Saradomin that they smite the bots before then, otherwise I may abandon the game altogether since it's what im looking forward to most.

It's possible that the majority of the "Current Players Online" are bots and for Jagex to go on a bot busting rampage by developing really effective anti-bot codes, it might cause them to reveal that the game isn't as successful as they make it out to be, thus decreasing the game and company value, and decreasing the likelihood of new players thinking things like "Wow, a lot of people are playing this game, therefore it must be good or I'll give it a go." It might just be a business ploy is what I'm saying. It looks better to have more "players" online from a marketing point of view.

    Hi everyone, I am an American software developer and would like to make a few points on this issue:
    For Jagex, it would be easiest to detect the bots that are earning gp through methods that would take too much time to actually be profitable for even the most committed players. A couple examples from the video are selling vials of water for 2gp profit and buying beers from NPC vendors to sell in the GE. As these methods are uncovered, an automated detection system could mark the items that are being sold for profit as items that need to be tracked, and GE transactions for large amounts of those items could be monitored. An example of an obvious red flag to this detection system would be an account consistently hitting the GE's maximum sell limit on vials of water every day for days in a row. The system would then mark the accounts making these GE transactions as accounts that are potentially associated with bot farms, and further automated investigation could be put in place to determine if the account belongs to a real player. Obviously the people who are running these bot farms have a nearly infinite number of accounts at their disposal, so this detection system would need to take a look at the trades made by the account and investigate the accounts that traded the marked items to the account that was flagged because the account that sold the items may not be the account that botted them.
    The dream fix for getting rid of bots would be for Jagex to improve the OSRS client to be as good or better than other clients such as RuneLite, and restrict other clients from being used so that botting clients that interact with object variables in the game could no longer access OSRS. That way, the only botting that could be done would be through the use of difficult to code computer vision algorithms and would not be nearly as effective as the bots used today. I don't know much about creating clients and imagine that disrupting alternative clients from accessing OSRS is much easier said than done.
    I would be surprised if Jagex hasn't already considered or implemented most or everything that I've stated above and I imagine the real question here is how much of a priority this issue is for them.

    -Make it harder to get access to the G.E. making it a requirement to have 23 quest points. No exceptions.
    -Improve bot detection. Normal people aren't going to be picking wheat 24/7. If someone is picking wheat for more than 24 hours in one go is most likely a bot.
    -Priests of Zamorak won't let you enter their temple for their wine not until you have 15 quest points and will attack on site if you enter anyways.
