  • I show you how to drill out your old lock cylinder when you have lost the key. I go through the steps I used buy going to larger drill bits and making sure I don't go too deep. I give you some tips on using this drill it all to hell method without ruining the main ignition switch. No guarantee this will work but it should if you are careful. Please subscribe to my channel so youtube will be happy.

    Worked. Great video. I could get mine to turn to ACC position with a screwdriver once I removed the keyway pin. Took some time pulling it out, but suddenly it slid out like butter and new one went in easy. Thanks.

    This ignition like any other GM ignition has a sidebar. You don’t drill the key hole. You need to drill the sidebar that located at 7 o’clock. It’ll take you 5 sec to drill it and another 2 sec to turn the ignition counter clockwise and push in the hole to remove it.

    From recent experience is better to install a new switch and lock cylinder. Unscrew the disk around the keyway and unplug the wires. I had used an old switch I had and a new cylinder.

    • @b-boyjay4157
      @b-boyjay4157 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the ring (disk) around the keyway isn't supposed to come off with the diameter of the cylinder plug installed ... unless its really worn or the wrong parts installed, it won't come off.

    • @tumbles94
      @tumbles94  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No I have not had to try and get one out that is locked. If you lost the keys then just get new cylinders with keys which are cheap and then take off the door panel and change them. It is pretty easy to do.

    • @warrenhampton5503
      @warrenhampton5503 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Take the door panel off. There's a clip that holds the lock in. If it and the awitch is original, you can get the number off the door lock and get a new key cut for your switch.

    See the 3 notches on the main circle of the key ignition turn those and it all comes right out to next time you do it too

    • @BrentFriar
      @BrentFriar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That removes the entire switch assembly with the lock cylinder intact. If you do it that way, you have to replace both the switch and the lock cylinder.

    that dont look as easy as replacing the whole thing, you tube can sure mislead people.

    • @tumbles94
      @tumbles94  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is more if you want to spend $60 - 80 for an entire switch or $10-15 for insert. Not sure but you may have to get the lock cyl. out anyway to get the collar off on the entire switch. I would say this is easy now that I have done it. i think maybe 10 minutes I could do another one.

    • @justinjacobson7555
      @justinjacobson7555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Heydave420 if you don’t have a key you can’t remove the cylinder. If you can’t remove the cylinder you can’t remove the bezel. If you can’t remove the bezel you can’t remove the whole ignition....... if you have anything constructive to add that would help a guy out in this situation by all means let’s hear it. Otherwise get off TH-cam if it’s misleading you so bad!

  • @b-boyjay4157

    So I googled Door lock cylinder removal and this came up in google images. After seeing the thumbnail I had to click it. WOW!!!! The fact you actually did this is one thing... but why on earth would you tell anyone you did, let alone make a video with your face on it. Should have went with the approach you did when you picked out your TH-cam user image... this approach is extremely sloppy and risks damaging the housing (switch). This kind of work is why specialized trades like mechanics, locksmiths, etc. say... "labor rate $75 hr, $120 if you watch, $140 if you help, and $200hr if you worked on it first." geez... and why does everyone seem to think a drill bit down the middle of the key hole is a good idea, yeah a good idea if you wanna break a drill bit! lol ...Did you see the switch after he got it out and was putting the new one in? wtf? At that point just replace the switch cuz you mangled the old one. Glad it's not my car or my reputation at stake here. I guess it's better you show all the ppl looking up this video how to replace it with no key, aka theives, cheapskates, etc. Do it yourselfers like you who know just enough to get themselves into trouble. On to the next job shaggy... cuz that was janky.

    • @tumbles94
      @tumbles94  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sigh......I did this as a test and really did not care if it "janked" it up to be honest. I had a brand new ignition assembly in the box ready to go. Which is the right fix but if you want to go the cheap or fast route then this did work and is still working years later if you are wondering. So who cares you scrape some things up because the tolerances are not that tight on this part. I could not find many (read none) videos on replacing this WITHOUT the key.

    • @BrentFriar
      @BrentFriar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is exactly how a pro would have done it. The lock cylinder has to be removed before you can remove the rest of the switch. If you don't have the key or the cylinder is busted, you drill it out. Dude might not have the best technique, but the process was right and it worked.
