Jeremy's definition of "Christmas movie" is very narrow. It has to be specifically about the holiday and about Santa. Ryan is focusing on the feelings and themes of family and love which is what the whole bloody holiday is really about. By the way, "Lethal Weapon" is also a Christmas movie for the same reason. In that film, it's about friendship and new found family that helps give a grieving man mourning the death of his wife a new reason to continue living. It also takes place during the Christmas holiday season. Ryan, of course, is correct here.
What pushes Die Hard over the line to "Christmas Movie" for me is that the plot happens BECAUSE of Christmas, and John McClaine is going through heck and high water to get his family home safe together as its main focus. That by its concept is a Christmas idea, even if attached to the action genre.

Die Hard is absolutely a Christmas movie. It takes place on Christmas Eve at an office Christmas party. I get both arguments. While its centered within a Christmas party context, with Christmas references, Christmas isn't essential to the story. You can pick any day and the movie still works the same with some adjustments to a few lines. It can be said that it's a Christmas movie, just not a Christmas story. Meaning, if you were watching movies with a Christmas theme, Die Hard or Gremlins would be included. Christmas stories tend to have specific tropes, like Christmas miracles, or life lessons as you would find in Home Alone, Christmas Vacation, The Grinch or Scrooged (A Christmas Carol). But its can be argued that it's a miracle McClain succeeded, and the life lesson teaches him to put the pettiness aside with his wife, because time is short. It's semantics, though. Die Hard isn't a "Christmas movie" in a traditional sense. But it is an action movie with heavy Christmas themes, and can easily be in the Christmas movie category.

Chuck Norris' Invasion USA is a Christmas movie. Bad guys using rocket launchers on a suburb after the one family is decorating that Christmas tree. The attack on the shopping mall when people are doing their Christmas shopping. Only Chuck Norris can stop the bad guys from ruining Christmas for all of America.
Oh these are always fun. 2 could be considered a Christmas movie too 😂
I think the question boils down to what constitutes a Christmas movie. I think there are a few points we could use to define if die hard is a Christmas movie.
Does die hard take place on Christmas - yes
Are there any Christmas parties - yes, the nakatomi plaza is having a Christmas party that John attends.
Are there any Christmas references/jokes - yes, John makes multiple jokes and the iconic now I have a machine gun ho ho ho.
And are there Christmas carrols played throught the movie - yes, it even ends with the limo driver saying, if this is your idea of Christmas I can't wait to see new year's and pans out with a Christmas carrol.
Just with that I could class die hard as a Christmas movie.
Nothing from Hollywood deserves this much passion.
I’m tired of people debating about Die Hard being a Christmas movie. Lethal weapon is THE Christmas movie.
Home Alone isn't "about" Christmas either.
First Blood was a Christmas movie way before Die Hard way before Bruce was Bruce‼️🤔🧐 Also Lethal Weapon.
☘️”Trading Places”
Is a Christmas Movie
Yes! Lol
Not sure I agree with this one. I know why you think so, but too much of the movie is unrelated to the season
@@AllanTidgwell Dan Ackyroid wears a Santa Outfit, The Company has a Christmas Party..... etc etc So yes Trading Places is a Christmas movie also a News Years Movie
@@gregkirby9059so the Godfather is a wedding movie?
@@gregkirby9059 The butler can go to the movies with his Christmas bonus. By himself
I agree with Jeremy!
the long kiss good night is a Christmas film too. Geena and Samual
Do you think Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a Thanksgiving movie?
Sick of people sleeping on Lethal Weapon as a Christmas movie
Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Batman Returns, and Harry Potter are Christmas movies in my opinion
the plot to die hard CANNOT happen if it wasnt christmas.
There are 2, and only 2, types of Christmas movies:
1. Fantasy movies centered on the mythology of Santa Claus and related people or places. Examples are Santa Claus: The Movie or The Polar Express.
2. Drama, romance, or comedy whose central theme revolves around preparing for or celebrating Christmas. Examples are Jingle All the Way or Christmas Vacation.
Movies that occur in part or wholly during Christmas time, or even movies that just have snowy weather, are not Christmas movies UNLESS they also fall into one of the two categories above. Our notion of a "white Christmas" isn't even a thing for the entire southern hemisphere.
There can be overlap between the two, and there is room to expand beyond them, but just having John Wick 5 but there's a Christmas tree in the Continental is not a Christmas movie. Sorry.
My favorite Christmas movies are
Black Christmas
Silent night deadly night
Krampus
Terrifier 3
