Good morning , perfect video, I have a 10× 10 space in my back yard in lawrenceville Ga ,was looking at a few tree options, will also consider the Little Gem Magnolia ,thanks again for another insightful video.
Be careful not to over plant ur area, keeping in mind, this tree needs space to grow. I have a Little Gem (30’ x 10’), and I love cutting greenery and blossoms thru out the year.
So happy you did this video. I have wanted a Magnolia for 20 years. Finally we moved to a piece of property that would allow it to grow to its most magnificent self. It is 3 years old and went from a 5' to 12' in these 3 years. But I really didn't have any idea of on going care. This is timely for me. Thanks so much for guidance in taking it into a long healthy life. I cannot express the joy this one tree gives me every single time I look into my back yard. I guess every southern belle needs a Magnolia to live her life the fullest! teehee
I have one!! NJ and not really protected. It does sit on the southeast corner of our house and snuggles up to the garage but it does wonderfully! It's my favorite in the yard and other then shedding a lot especially after a harsh winter, it looks and smells like magic! Take care with the pine cones though, they can ruin your lawn mower!!! Rake them up first. Other then that, what a performer.
I like that you used the word shade in there. I grew up in Guatemala and some neighbors had a Magnolia Grandiflora, an old one, the father had studied forestry in the US, had propagated it and gifted saplings, and by then they were big. They grew very well there and I hope that people are still propagating them and caring for them. (This was all in a neighborhood in the capital city that has large, well kept yards and maybe only about 20 properties had them, l have not been back in 30 years so I don't know how it is now).
I’m from North Carolina and in my little town Magnolia Tree’s are EVERYWHERE.. I love waking up and smelling my whole street with the sweet smell from the flower. They’re beautiful!!
Thanks for all this info. I'm trying to grow one in India, Dehradun. It's relatively rare here. Quite slow growing for me! But I'll do a dizzy dance the day it flowers😁... I Check on it every day, about 5 foot tall now.
Beautiful majestic trees. The Magnolia Grandiflora is a must for holiday decorating. I have a small Star Magnolia planted and it’s beautiful in the Spring covered in white flowers. Thank you for showing the types of this stately tree.
Arrange those leaves and flowers and attach to a ceiling fan so they twirl around when the fan is on😀 and the aroma will spread evenly. Just a hunch. I bet the cut flowers would make an Epsom Salt bath all the more enjoyable. Epsom Salts have such healthy minerals which we may even be lacking. It sure helps calm the troubled spirit, too.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Magnolias. We, too, here in Oklahoma enjoy these wonderful trees which seem to do well, even in our poor soils and tricky weather patterns.
Magnolia Grandiflora is my favorite! My grandparents had one in their backyard. We live in Kentucky. My parents have a pink magnolia tree. 🌸 Thank you for this video.
Thanks for this educational tour, I have always like magnolia flowering tree even before I knew its name. In SE Asia, there is one type of magnolia tree with powerful fragrance from small white or yellow flowers that can be sold as sacred offering to Buddhist shrine. Also, it is known that this type of SE Asian magnolia tree would be home to spirit as it gets older.
Grew up with a mother who had a green thumb. Grandiflora was one of her favorites. Before she had to sell and move into asst. living her magnolia was so huge and glossy with thick brown backs on leaves. It is still glorious for whoever lives there.
We have a Star (tulip) magnolia tree that never fails to bloom in early spring in Zone 5. Would love to add a few more hardy varieties to the landscape.
Wow!!! The flower is reminiscent of a large lotus or water lily sitting on branches. How incredible is that? Here in zone 4/5 Canada, we grow zone appropriate stellata hybrids, saucer and the little girl series magnolias.
Omg can I wake up surrounded by magnolias 💚🤍🤎, I'm super excited today my tree has its first bud I can't wait for it to open, I think I might just wait till its fully opened and place it in epoxy for a forever saving 🥰 (my first flower)
One of my favorite trees to use leaves and seed pods in arrangements, swags, wreaths. At Christmas time I give them a dusting of light golden spray. Beautiful.
I wish I had enough space in my yard for several large magnolias, but alas. I am currently growing a few from cuttings, and Ill probably just squeeze them in anyway once they're old enough to get planted outside. I might have to get rid of some of the more mundane current occupants like Cherry Laurel or some of the Hydrangeas.
Can you tell me what is making rings with holes around my magnolia tree and how do i treet this, we live in Washington state and my tree is like the large first tree you spoke about with the bronze underside of the leaves.
Hey Allen! My neighbors mom just dug up a magnolia tree and give it to me and im not sure where i want to plant it. I know they get pretty big. Right now its about 3 ft tall and has quite a few leaves on it. I was wondering would it do fine in a pot if i bring it inside for the winter just until i figure out where its gonna go? Unfortunately i dont know the varierty of magnolia it is, is there any way i can tell? Thanks 😊
I just planted 4 Brown Bracken Magnolia trees , I’m in the Missouri Ozarks , I can’t wait to see how they do . I was worried about the winter weather and if I need to do anything special for them .
Great info! Hubby bought 5 "fruit" trees from local garden center clearance "really cheap" in November in Iowa?!🤷♀️🤦♀️Luckily we have a sun room(& 5 acres) but 2 had no labels, & one just started blooming🤔 My sis is a botanist(lucky)so sent her a pic & it's a star magnolia.
Great information and beautiful Magnolias. Today I started with stratification of two kind of Magnolia-seeds (stellata and liliflora). Hopefully, after couple months they will be able to germinate. Dear Allen do you have experience with the Magnolia champaca? According to my local garden store this one do not need stratification. I would love to get some tips/advices. I live in the Netherlands (hardiness zone 8a). Thank you very much.
I live in PA , zone 6 and I have two magnolias: evergreen grandiflora and another one ( I don’t know its name, but it’s not a evergreen). Both are beautiful and growing great
I believe i have a bracken brown beauty in my back yard but my neighbor wants me to cut it bc previous owner planted it too close to fence line so some of the tree branches hang over to their side 😢its so beautifully big and the flowers are gorgeous. Look up videos to see if i can keep the tree trimming it smaller 😢
Hi my trees have been planted for about 14 years and they are only about 9 to 10 feet tall. Could this be because I don’t water them enough? I really would like some shade in my yard
Hadn't seen P. Allen Smith in some time now. I was searching to identify this particular tree/plant. I remember the very large one at Balboa Park in San Diego CA., next to the museum of history. I live there of two years ( 2012-2014 ), a "homeless" Preacher, READING God's holy written word ( King James Bible ONLY! ) during that same time. ...So, I sincerely hope Mr. Smith READS this message: Ezekiel 2:1-3:27; 14:1-23; !!18:1-32!! and 33:1-33; Jeremiah 5:1-31; 6:13-14; 8:10-11; ...I Tim. 6:3-10; Dan. 11:14; Luke 14:11; Rev. 3:14-18; and 22:18-19!! ...Finally: Matt. 24:1-25:46; II John 9-11; II Thess. 2:1-12; Rev. 13:1-18; ...for details: Daniel 1:1-12:13; and Revelation 1:1-22:21 ...Amen.
My house was build in 1910. I’m from a small town called Gridley in Ca. About 60 miles north of sacramento. I have 3 magnolias that range from small med and large. They are right in front of the walk way. I found it hard to keep the grass nice and green with no patches do to the droppings of the pods. Can you tell me the purpose of the large pods? They compact the dirt really frustrating to keep a nice yard. Thanks.
I have 3 little gem magnolia trees I planted 2.5 years ago from 24" box. They were very healthy the first 2 years. Lately they are so bare, so many leaves turn brown but still stay on the tree. Do I need to water more or less? I water once a week for 15min with drip irrigation (5-6 gallons).
Hi, I have been enjoying your vids/shows for years, your energy and voice is so calming and love all your info and garden style! Subscribed to your channel! Can't wait for new vids in the spring /summer of your gardens! Trying to grow my channel. Do you use Epson salt for most of your plants? Thanks so much.
P.allen Smith. These trees are beautiful. Have you ever grafted trees or fruit trees.one of my grandfather's did ...grafting with fruit trees. I've always wanted to try this.i think it's very interesting.
Hello I have 2 magnolias but I am not sure what they are but one of them is only growing leaves on one side of the tree and the other side is dry and naked I am not sure how to care for them
I have a few around about house. One in particular (so happens to be our biggest magnolia) I wanna say it’s like the yellow lantern because it does loose its leaves yearly, I’m interested to know more information about it. Do you have a video I can check out?
Wow I was curious about this tree in my yard i just bought a new house and I have exactly this tree brackens brown beauty. It is massive i imagine 20+ years old. I was trying to find out how to trim it up and what to do if the top has a little bit yellow. I live in winston Salem NC. I believe it should be perfect conditions.
I know I'm a little late but The Bracken Brown beauty was Found and named by my Great Grandpa. (Ray Bracken) therefore making me the Co-Co-Co-Co-Owner of this tree 🌳
Hello, Thank you for the very educational video. I moved into my new home a year and a half ago and I discovered that I have a magnolia not sure if it’s a tree but it’s a very large bush. I’ve only seen 2 to 3 flowers in this big tree/bush. It’s very green looks healthy the bottom has many many stems. When is the best time to prune this magnolia so I can get more flowers out of it? Please help.
I’ve got a 350+ year old Magnolia tree in my backyard that has a small patch of what looks like black tar coming out of the crotch of the tree. Any idea what that could be?
My husband and I inherited his mother's home. She has one Magnolia tree. Not really sure the name. It gets black spots on the leaves. Not sure what it is or what causes it. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciate it.
Thanks for the video, Smith. I love Magnolia and am willing to plant. May I know what kind of Magnolia is suitable for tropical regions(Country: Myanmar)?
Not really. You would be better off with an evergreen tree that you can't see through..I have crazy neighbors too and ended up moving my teddy bear trees and replaced with Oakland Holly trees. You cannot see through them and they are growing fast
I just moved from Arizona to my husbands home state of Virginia and these are so so beautiful and smell amazing 😻 I’m so obsessed every time I see one I want to stop and smell and stare. 🤤
I don't suppose there is a dwarf evergreen magnolia? I want something that won't get out of control but I can still get a little shade and privacy from, for a smallish back yard.
Good morning , perfect video, I have a 10× 10 space in my back yard in lawrenceville Ga ,was looking at a few tree options, will also consider the Little Gem
Magnolia ,thanks again for another insightful video.
You may want to consider a mix, include plants that resist insects or act as a natural insecticide themselves.
Be careful not to over plant ur area, keeping in mind, this tree needs space to grow. I have a Little Gem (30’ x 10’), and I love cutting greenery and blossoms thru out the year.
Pro tip: watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Hassan Roland Definitely, I've been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :)
@Hassan Roland definitely, I have been using Flixzone for years myself =)
The way this guy talks about plants makes me fall in love with plants

got one in NJ too!
Magnolia grandiflora, the best thing the US has given to the world!!! Without a shade of a doubt.
facts.
I like that you used the word shade in there. Ilex opaca or American holly as a mature specimen tree can hold its own against a magnolia grandiflora

Hi Allen I'm happy to see your still moving around I use to enjoy watching your episodes in the Saturdays on cable TV years ago 🤣🤣🤣 from Anguilla 🇦🇮
Great video, magnolia trees are phenomenal. This is on my list of trees for our property.
Thanks for this educational tour, I have always like magnolia flowering tree even before I knew its name.

Wish you would have talked more about the care and pruning of these trees.
We have a mature Tulip Magnolia here at the homestead. It is nice to know what I can do to feed it and help it thrive.
We have random magnolia trees here in NYC. They are so beautiful and I love their flowers.
Thank you for sharing your passion. The Brackens Brown Beauty is on my wish list and I will be sure to feed it appropriately now. Thanks for the tips!
Lucie Engen you’ll love it. Grows fast!

Used to have one of those but ice storms kept breaking them. Pacific Northwest here.

Can the Little Gem Magnolia survive full time sunlight, in Southern California, or what do you suggest? I have a 10X10 grassy front yard.

Thank you for subscribing! And yes, we do use Epsom salt.
It’s really beautiful 🥰🌸💐
My magnolia is a tree. After it blooms I get these hardball size pods that eventually turn brown like a pinecone and drop. What are these pods?
We have many wild magnolia trees on our 7 acre stretch of land.
Does it really produce flowers if grow in container..??
P.allen Smith.
These trees are beautiful.
Have you ever grafted trees or fruit trees.one of my grandfather's did ...grafting with fruit trees.
I've always wanted to try this.i think it's very interesting.
How often should I add the salt around the tree?
Love magnolia
Awesome tip... not like others that have to promote their "brand" Epsom salts super cheap too! Ty & God bless
I loved the video. I planted a magnolia that blooms pink. I did not know that it was related to the tulip tree.

will magnolia trees grow in new mexico? I was given 2 of them from a friend from louisiana
Would a Magnolia tree grow in zone 9b of Arizona? And if so, what variety?
I would adore a brackens brown, do you think one or 3 can survive the harsh heat of a Reno , Nevada summer? ❤
Love a hardy plant.
My husband and I inherited his mother's home. She has one Magnolia tree. Not really sure the name. It gets black spots on the leaves. Not sure what it is or what causes it. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciate it.
What’s the difference between Bracken Brown Beauty and D.D Blanchard?
Thanks for the video, Smith.
I love Magnolia and am willing to plant.
May I know what kind of Magnolia is suitable for tropical regions(Country: Myanmar)?
will they grow in new mexico
how do they perform in texas?
Is the Teddy Bear magnolia a good option for obnoxious neighbors? I need a privacy screen 25-35 feet high.
Not really. You would be better off with an evergreen tree that you can't see through..I have crazy neighbors too and ended up moving my teddy bear trees and replaced with Oakland Holly trees. You cannot see through them and they are growing fast
@@HandcraftedintheFoothills Good advice, thanks
