I so enjoyed this video and thank Doug Ruhren for sharing his wealth of knowledge with us. I hope to get to the arboretum the next time we are up that way. I, too, love to visit gardens in the "off season" when you can really see the bones.
Great video Jim! I appreciate the discussion of evolution, geologic time, and glaciation. It’s very important that people learn this stuff to understand the world and life in general. It really puts into perspective how transient life is and how little of time humans have been around. Plants, fungi, and bacteria are the true masters of the planet.
So glad you covered the first blush cherry even though it wasn’t in bloom. That lovely columnar habit is not always easy to find for small space gardeners!

They sometimes get a bad rap especially in the urban neighborhood landscapes - homeowners saying the blossoms don't last long, they fall of in wind, etc. I still think they are the most beautiful flowering tree... ever!!
I love Magnolias. I have planted 3 Stellatas and 3 Soulangianas in my past. I no longer have any. One of my local garden centres 'Newmans Nursery' at Tea Tree Gully South Australia has a hillside covered in both Magnolias, Camellias and Azalea.. Just beautiful. I should drive to the cul de sac where I planted the 3 Soulangianas to see if they kept them and if so how they are doing x. I planted a lot of trees at that property about 20 years ago. All the ones that can be seen down the side and out the back are huge, the property is right next to a small reserve that has a running creek during the rain. One of the trees was my 41st birthday present from my parents... Has gorgeous fall colour x. Thanks for the memories x 💚🌳🌲🌻
That was a great tour. Now I know how to pronounce our ‘Jelena’. Cornus mas blooms right after our yellow Hamamelis. Beautiful yellow colour in winter.

I have planted several different magnolias throughout the years but these are the only two that remain and I thoroughly enjoy them. I’d love to have some of the cultivars you showed in this video, especially the stellata chrysanthemumiflora, the pink star magnolia!
These Hort Pro videos take me back to college when we all talked horticulture in Latin and appreciated things like the difference between a shaggy barked and smoothed barked cultivar. I'm on a good sized corner lot that gets a good amount of wind, so sturdy is a must. If you have any suggestion on trees to look into, I'd be very appreciative!
I love my tulip tree. If the weather is right here in Georgia it blooms beautiful. But some years the weather gets do warm in February that it blooms before Valentine's day, be blooming along with the daffodil's. Too many times tho when it's in full bloom, we have a drop in temperature ,like this year. It dropped into the twenties one night, an it hurt the blooms. They turn dark, then black. Even when the large leaves come on, the blackened blooms are hard very hard,and hang on forever. Love the warm weather in February, but it hurts plants. Especially fruit trees. It was warmer days in February than in March this year. Temps are so up and down. I would rather handle cold temps all during February,and let spring come on in late March. That way blooming trees and fruit trees could have a chance to not get killed by frost. All these trees are beautiful. We see them all in Georgia.

Are there any sweet bay magnolias there? I have been wondering if they can be kept a smaller size. I wanted to add it as a host for the tiger swallowtails.
I had a large magnolia put n my yard. In November. No buds no flowers . Its large leaves waxed green large thick leaves. Why aren’t the ones around here flowering. 8B
I would never get those magnolias because they would bloom to soon we have saucer mag in peoples yards and sometimes the blooms get ruined by frost, sad. but they do get pretty big. I have a later blooming magnolia, dont know what it is called it is more upright in growth and gets the pink flowers in late april, it was a replacement for the butterfly I had that did not make it. I think it might be a galaxy, since that nursery has those. I have a little gem, and a bracken brown beauty whcih I protect in the winter, right now they are covered with a clear tent and small heater in there so far so good will be their second year inthe ground and protected over winter (I am ne ohio) they bloomed alot last year. the little gem is staying small, I have had it (in a pot in the house) for several years before putting in the ground, it has not grown much, my braken brown beauty when it gets to big I will probably have to build a permenant greenhouse around it. will have to wait and see it was over 6 feet last year, but the pvc pipes I use for the frame gets pretty high when I bend them over to be the support for the tent.

The Cornelian Cherry blooms here in zone 5b before the forsythia and if the ambient temperature is warm enough, it's a major bee attraction.

Weeping willows are pretty short lived typically. Live oaks, willow oaks, black gum, seedless sweet gum, white oak, sourwood, hornbeam are a few

Yes, they have several. JC Raulston was a big Magnolia collector

They are pretty dang hardy. I wouldn't go crazy with anything. A little compost is about all I would do

I have loebneri "ballerina" and it gets zapped almost every year.. a little disappointing. My witchazels however just keep on delighting.
