A deeply missed pair of comedians. Christmas is never the same ❤

Eric Morecambe mentions old Hollywood stars from the 1930s including Jane Withers - who died earlier this month.

In 1972, Morecambe and Wise were not making a full series for the BBC due to the exhaustion of their writer Eddie Braben who was forced to take 6 months rest. They would only be concentrating on their 1972 Christmas Show, and so they had a free year to do these interviews and their stage show. They were also promoting their upcoming autobiography.

Great memories of interviewing Mavis Nicholson about her interviews with Morecambe and Wise for Thames.

I'm pretty sure they were both wizards. I'm also sure they were the original owners of Zonko's

They were popular in my house at the time.
Similar to the Goons, inasmuch as I couldn't keep up with what they were saying, often, as a boy.
But I became accustomed with this type of conversation, and humour, as some of the people I grew up with were accustomed to talking like this in their daily life.
Occasionally exhausting to be in the same room with, but also good fun at times.

Before Good Afternoon there was a programme called tea break in 1971 I think.

Sorry but after E&E piled into Monty Python I cannot see them in the same light.I know it shocked and hurt Michael Palin.

So Eric and Ernie were not allowed a point of view or an opinion? Here we go again, cancel them when they disagree with you. Come on!!

In context, someone at the BBC was given a two minute piece of film, of M&W backstage at one of their own shows, being asked what they personally thought of Monty Python.
The whole two minutes worth, filmed nearly 50 years ago.
The people at the BBC went to the trouble of finding Michael Palin and showing him the film, and asking him to comment, in mid 2021.
      I mean,
      Why?

I love Python too but also think they were Oxbridge hacks, lauded for essentially regurging Milligan and the Carry Ons, that's not the whole story of course they had talent and merit of their own too, Morecambe probably thought they had it all too easy, fresh from college and handed it on a plate (by their own admission) whereas E&E worked their whole lives before breaking into tv, rather like how the 'alternative comedy' crowd that pretty much swept working class comedy off the map in the 80s

This interview sadly showcases how tedious Eric Morecambe could become in TV interviews. Always trying to be funny, and I was so happy that he fell flat here at 1:02 when he did what he considered a joke and it got ZERO reaction from the host. Eric could never properly sit and just be interviewed. Tedious at times. Great comedy performer though.

Very slightly irritating. The desire to be constantly humorous is a bit tedious.

Eric in every interview he did always went for the laugh. It was built into him. It was part and parcel of his personality whether you liked it or not, tough.

    • @johnking5174

Please remember also, they were on this show to promote their autobiography, so it was a publicity interview, so they had to come across funny, to ensure the book would sell.

@@johnking5174 That’s understandable. Nevertheless, I am looking back on comedians in 1972 ( reference in the description) and by todays standards, it’s completely outdated and respectfully, very unfunny.

@@philiplee7604 You can't watch these two from a 2021 perspective, sorry Philip, you can't. Morecambe and Wise were of a totally different era. Remember, their show was at its peak from 1971-1977, the era were we only had 3 television stations in the UK. Captive audience, and an audience who were used to the old music hall style of comedy. You may not think it is funny in 2021, but 28 million viewers did on Christmas Day 1977.
