Something that seems to be overlooked but why was their boss sending two young black women into a known racist town? That seems insanely irresponsible to me.
they called her "n-word girl" WHILE REPORTING ON HER MURDER??!! never have i been more sad and disgusted. I cried through the entire second half of this video, unbelievable. Thanks for telling her story
You guys realize that not much has changed in this country, right? Granted they wouldn’t say “n-word girl” these days but the police typically avoid charging white people for murder when they victim is black. Trayvon Martin, stalked and attacked by a known racist while he was walking home after buying candy and juice. Zimmerman told the police it was self defense and the cops said “ok” and the case was closed. It wasn’t until people started protesting that the cops arrested him. Of course the jury let him go…the whole trial was rigged. Zimmerman became a hero for killing a black kid and white folks everywhere donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to his defense. The governor handpicked to the DA and her job was to lose the case. Ahmad Arberry…jogging and minding his own business. Two racist white men chase him in a truck. He’s exhausted so they catch up and kill him with a shot gun. Cops pull up and let him die before bothering to an ambulance. Of course the racists lied and say they were the victims here and the DA told the cops not to arrest them. A healthy black woman goes to an adult slumber party with other moms from her kids little league team. There’s a bunch of women and husbands of two of the women. Everyone else is white. The next morning the blank woman is found dead in the backyard. They called it suicide…no arrests. A few months ago a black woman went on a date with a white man she met on Tinder. Later that day he calls the police and says “she just died”…cops said he seemed like a nice guy and left it at that. They took no evidence from her apartment. I could go on and on. Nothing has changed. If you pay attention to the news you’ll see these cases. But I get it…nobody cares about black lives. While Gabby Petito was missing a black medical school student was also missing and found dead. He wasn’t all over the news 24/7.
That is like saying you accidentally forgot to put one foot in front of the other. She was rushed to hospital and what the retired to the police station for donuts and were like Oopsie I forgot to do my assignment for first day at police school. Secure the crime scene. Rubbish like that makes my blood boil because that "simple mistake" has hurt many cases.

the fact those neighbours went above and beyond to help carol letting her in, calling the police, offering a place to stay the night, walking with her etc and yet carol still became a victim is so tragic

Acknowledging the truth would mean there’s an expectation for them to stand up and help, and many people don’t want to see the world change. Why help fix racism if it doesn’t affect you?
Sad truth: Martinsville is still very much racist to this day. I live in Indianapolis, IN and do social work and case management and get cases from surrounding counties. I used to get cases for families in Martinsville (about 20 mins from me). As a black woman, I experienced first hand the racism that resides in this town. One time I had to stop for gas, and midway through me pumping, a white man came out the store and told me I needed to leave because “surely I was lost”. Yet, he saw my Indiana license plates. Families would refuse to work with me because of my race and worse. Now, I refuse to accept cases or even drive through the town because the people will stare at you through your car. It’s sad because there’s a lot of small towns in Indiana just like this; racist. As a black Indianian, we know which areas to stay out of.
So sorry you have to deal with this. Case work is hard enough, thank you for contributing so much to your community despite what you deal with outside of your work. You’re amazing!

They were completely disgusting, and should have been prosecuted much sooner, but we also know that they're in some place kinda warm 🔥 right now.....#hell
One of the saddest parts is that Carol felt she was being a burden on Norma and Don, but based on how Norma behaved, Norma cared, and was concerned, Carols death is a far bigger "burden" on Normas shoulders than Carol ever would have been had she stayed the night. Remember this if you are ever in a similar situation, be a burden because I am sure it absolutely eats Norma up that Carol didnt stay that night. Clearly Carol is the true victim, but I imagine it must haunt Norma.
Norma and Don could've waited with her knowing they lived in a sundown town. It's one thing to keep her safe in your home in private but publicly they didn't protect her.
@@Reese_Cup I get your point, but you don't seem to be taking into account that Norma and Don were told that she had people who would meet her there and that she didn't wanna to annoy them anymore. Thats a clear sign of "you've done enough, I'm fine from here".

Hi Eleanor, please can you look into the case of Noah Donohoe, he was a 14 year old who was found dead in Belfast in 2020 under suspicious circumstances and his mother is fighting the police to get information surrounding his death. Despite the attempts to get attention for the current petition, lots of people have yet to hear about this case so a video about this would be really helpful!
I'm from west Belfast where that poor child was from. I'm actually wearing his Jersey atm His mummy needs and deserves answers. I would say it deserves to be talked about but so much is being kept away that his own mummy can't even get. 1 thing I'd be certain of is when fiona does get justice it will bring this country to its knees because of the cover-up
@Leon Gillihan oh no 😢 I'm so sorry to hear this about your sister. If you have that gut feeling follow it. I'm in no way related to noah or his family but the story just reeks of coverups and as you have family history in Belfast you'll know how the communities are divided(wish they wouldn't be) and how the police are viewed on both sides and in this case its showing more and more. I do still definitely think so much is being kept from his mummy fiona because it goes wayyyy up and this country will go mad when it does come out
48:00 I don't care how old the offender is, if they are actually guilty, time doesn't matter. Just like the Nazi Hunters, even 80 year old men and women deserve to be punished for their crimes.
Agreed. Many people just think oh sweet old person! No...they very easily could have been a horrible person their whole life, they're just older now! Plenty of old people are horrible, and often become worse in their old age
As a person of color living in america, we still have sundown towns. And yes, this father was very very right that the reason her murder was so mishandled and investigated so lightly was because she was a single young black woman murdered in a sundown town. You said it yourself, one in two of the white men in that area were members of the KKK and unfortunately that's the reality, those statistics apply to the police as well there. This poor woman was brutally murdered in cold blood and despite her having as much of a life as any person, the police ignored the claims of her stalking and harassment, and this led to her death. Its disheartening and saddening to realize that this still happens today in this country constantly. Including the backlash Norma and Don faced.
Still in current day and time, harassment and stalking on first occurrence goes unpunished. As a white female, I had this happen to me and it took three reports and an almost child abduction to get the police to believe and do something. I could not imagine if I was if color how many more resorts had to be filed. But my point is, they (police) don’t do ANYTHING with just one report of harassment. Sadly ☹️
I am filled with such rage and disappointment that sundown towns were and still are a thing I had no idea and I never will have any idea what it’s like to be a person of colour as I am a young white female but I really hope and pray you never have to go through this I hope and pray no person (especially a person of colour) has to ever go through this it genuinely breaks my heart how poorly poc cases get treated x

I grew up in a sundown town. It was awful! Things didn’t start to change until the late 80s. I recently moved back to help with my mom along with my son and his biracial girlfriend. I was so terrified that she would be insulted or hurt, but thankfully it seems this town did some major self reflection and it is no longer that way! Edit: Bless that couple for giving Carol refuge. It shows that not all of those born or living in those towns agreed with such sick racism! My parents taught me better than that and I taught my son better than that and now I will have grandchildren that I hope will live in a world where racism becomes a thing of the past.
I also grew up in one of those towns. I think it's still predominantly white, but those who are non white do not get harassed, Thank God. I'm so glad that times have changed for I do have 3 biracial grankids.
One thing that i love about Eleanor's videos is that the video isnt based on the life of the murder but the victim the innocent life that was taken. A lot of people who make videos on these topics focus on the murders which causes people to kind of idolize them so i just really appreciate that.
@@imadethiscuziwsbored she normally goes into detail of both. she (usually) only focuses on the murderer if it’s a spree/serial killer as going into equal detail on each victim would make the video not only impossible to make but also 6 hours long. she still tries though
This was all wild…. The sundown towns… the fact that the town harrassed and got mad at the couple who helped her. All backwards. I feel so bad for the victim and her family.
What surprises me is she was outside after dark (8:30 PM). Sundown towns aren't just white only towns. They are towns that if a black person is caught outside after dark, they can be hung. A map was made by a man of color to help travelers avoid those areas. Those murders weren't solved. Today, less of those towns exist and they don't kill people after sundown anymore (not that I know of).

SUCH a heavy case☹it's somewhat comforting to know that she found people to help her when she needed them. The fact that the police failed to do basic things to protect her - a warning isn't enough and it clearly WASN'T enough. This poor poor girl😮💨
As someone who’s also from the small town of Rushville (the town Carol lived in after her mother married Paul Davis, attended high school in, and is buried in), it’s so surreal seeing this case covered on a true crime channel for millions of people to see. Carol’s story is so heartbreaking, but you did an amazing job covering it. Thanks, Eleanor!!❤️❤️ Edit: Martinsville did place and dedicate a memory stone for Carol in 2017!
I grew up going to the horse auctions in Rushville almost every weekend. I'm from a small farming community in Ohio. It makes me feel nauseated to think of the racism in the communities throughout Ohio and Indiana.
What he did was correct. He never knew that they were going to murder her. And in real life if a guy or girl stalked another or catcalled the most they will give them is a warning. They can't really arrest them for that. The police officer did the right thing. He let them off with a warning. That's appropriate to do. In his eyes, he saw these as little creepy and horny individuals. He could not physically perform an arrest just based on that, If they had touched her fair enough but the police officer couldn't legally do an arrest even today they would give a warning.
@@AngelDelight69 cat calling is not the same as stalking tho. It's not normal that someone stalks you around. Also police is useless. So many true crime stories are about how many evidence people had that someone stalked them and police "couldn't do anything" and later they found women dead. A lot of "laws" just protect criminals. Like here where I live someone can break in to my apartment, try to k!ll me and they can sue me if I hurt them physically lmao... in some states of usa as I know you can shoot a person who breaks in and tries to harm you. This was a bit off topic but just one of many examples how laws just help criminals and not victims.
My heart dropped when you said Sundown town. I remember when I first read about those when learning about racism in the USA, it's absolutely horrific that people could be so openly intensely racist that whole towns or suburbs proudly advertised it. I can't help but feel a little bit angry at the people who maybe knowingly sent a young black person to sell encyclopedias in that area.
The whole of South Africa was basically a sundown town during Apartheid. People would have passes and if they were in a certain area after dark without a pass, they'd be arrested or probably worse
it’s sad how much we still don’t know about the black lives that were lost in these sundown towns. it effects so many of us even to this day. i wasn’t even surprised they didn’t even name her in articles or reports. my grandmothers birth certificate doesn’t even say black for her race just the n word. it’s insane to think how these things aren’t even that long ago and can continue when we’re supposed to be more open and have laws in place.
The fact that sundown towns existed, and that there are still some people with that mindset is scary. It's sad that happened to Carol, and that they wrote what they did on your grandmother's birth certificate. Glad this case was finally solved, but not that it took so long.
Because black is a color, not a race. Back then, if I remember correctly, calling someone black was considered the "n" word. It was very offensive and a no no to refer to someone by their color - red, brown, yellow, black, etc. Can't judge the actions of people back then based on the values of today.
“They were saying some awful horrible men things” I laughed at this but I also felt bad because it’s horrible how normalized catcalling, sexual harassment, and sexual assault is today. I can say (I’m 17 turning 18 soon) that I’ve been catcalled by GROWN MEN since I was 12 when I would walk home from school, a time I didn’t even hit PUBERTY. I was a CHILD. And guess what? It was every day. And it still happens so often. I understand my womanly parts are apparent and kinda hard to hide, but a woman can be walking down the street with baggy clothes and get catcalled. And it’s NORMAL. Like I’m used to this and so are so many girls and women. It’s the same with social media, with the unsolicited images i and many woman receive. I get them so often, I delete social media. Men cannot keep it in their pants and nobody is trying to change this in the law. Awareness is being raised online, but nobody is doing anything. Unbelievable. And carol probably had it 20x worse back then as a young and beautiful black woman. I feel so bad for her and all black women who have had similar experiences. I love your videos!
It is truly sad. I realised something quite scary recently that I have experienced more cat calling and verbal harassment when I was under the age of 18. Since I hit 18 its lessened and bare in mind I have always looked younger than my actual age, and these GROWN MEN are hitting on a 14 year old and yet I looked 12??? 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Yeah happened to me a lot of times. I remember once I was in a crowded bus and some one touched my personal area I tried to release my self but he was so strong and I didn't know whose hand it was. All I could do was screaming so loudly until he let go. It was 6pm and rush hour and I was just 17.

The reason it took 2 hours to get medical attention for Carol is that she wouldn't have been allowed in the 'white' hospital, unless they had a separate area and staff for 'colored folk'. Since that's pretty unlikely in a sundown town, she would have been taken to the nearest facility that would see her. And by nearest, I mean many miles.
@@HoneyBee-br6hi I didn't read it, I lived it. That's how sundown towns worked. Edit to add- that's also why the teen called the cops instead of an ambulance. Because that's how sundown towns worked.
@@samroberts82 it amazes me that someone who researches brutal murders for a living can still be so very innocent. But since Elenore isn't American, I guess I can understand why she isn't familiar with the real horrors of racism here. Her genuine naivety at the cops 'not seeming to care about this young woman' makes me feel several different types of ways. It galls me that things like segregated hospitals and the general attitude of whites back then are being forgotten, and makes me want to hack out an entire dissertation right here in the comments. 😞 There is a lot more to this story, and it's so, so much worse than a lot of people seem to realize 😢💔
It’s so impressive you can research and tell these stories so well. My grandfather killed my grandmother, and I’ve always wanted to try to figure out the story but don’t even know where to start. It’s just mad that you do it so well💛
Eleanor is simply my go to murder podcast listener case reader whatever she’s amazing I fucking love her voice I love how she explains it to me she just is simply amazing lots of love from America!
Same as well! I love learning about their culture. I've learned a lot like what is a till and a boot of car haha. You should try That Chapter with my guy Mike he's Irish and does true crime. He says tree instead of 3 so us Americans are getting culture watching true crime😂
I hate listening to videos like this one around racism because it’s so scary to think that back then and even now people were so filled with hatred of others simply for the color of their skin, and they’re willing to kill over it. I really hope that our world and the people inside of it start to do better because this is just vile. Thank you Eleanor for covering these topics because they need to be heard.
This poor girl! I cannot even imagine how scared she was that day! The people who took her in are great people! It is very very sad to me to hear some of these stories and find out that we have so much farther to go to stop racism! I cant even imagine how much trauma her family went thru to find out who did this, but he died before he could be prosecuted! He deserved to spend the rest of his life behind bars, but, instead the family gets no justice whatsoever. They cannot even put up a memorial for her. Just another kick in their hearts which is so, so sad! I am sure she knows what a great family she had and that they were doing everything they could to bring someone to justice for her death. My heart goes out to her family!
The fact that she was just a few years younger than my grandparents just makes me shudder at the lives they lived in their twenties. How scary it must’ve been at that time and they all lived in Michigan, which also had sundown towns.
this happened in my hometown. people tried to get some kind of memorial put into the courthouse (basically town hall) for her a couple years ago, and they wouldn’t allow it. the racism in that town is alive and well.
I would love to see you cover the Lacey fletcher case. The story about the girl who literally melted into the couch because her parents starved her there
As a black female who was also born in the Midwest, this is scary to hear about. Yes, racism is everywhere but I didn’t know it was that bad back in the day up here in the Midwest like it was in the southern states. May Carol rest peacefully with the other angels.
Sundown towns still exist, even in the Midwest, though they try harder now to hide their dark nature. Jelani Day was killed in one last year, in Peru, Illinois.
Such a tragic story. Carol seemed to be a beautiful, lovely young lady. So sad that she experienced the terror she must have felt before her death and her terrible loss of life. Bless her.
Thank you Norma and Dawn!!!!! You are amazing people for standing up for what’s right even when threatened! The amount of anger and sadness from hearing them calling her the N word girl instead of her name!!!
As someone who was born in Indiana, I would like to apologize on behalf of the people who live there that aren't like that. However I will also sadly deliver the news that Indiana is still not a good place in a lot of areas.
Carl Jenkins's murder had a bittersweet resolution. At least Carol's parents & siblings got a chance to see the face of the demon that took her life. One thing I'm curious about is what happened to Carol's 3 coworkers? Why were they late? Did they ever show up to the meet up spot? Did they encounter any danger too?
I was curious about one of the coworkers. I know there was another black woman among them and I was scared for her too. The other two coworkers would probably be fine because they were white.
Bittersweet? They got away with it. Also, even if the killer had been sent to prison and wasn't dying, he was an old man and didn't have that long left anyway.
Thank you for covering cases like these. Here in Texas we still have Sundown towns and I’ve actually encountered one before when traveling for school. And this is in 2022🤦🏽♀️
I've never even heard of a sundown town. Its crazy these still exist, and that we have to do serious racial research before taking trips to different cities, states and countries.
Oh my that’s horrific. It makes me feel embarrassed to be white. Racism should never ever, ever have existed never mind still exist. Nobody should ever feel ashamed, embarrassed or any other negative emotions about something they can’t change about themselves.
Bless Norma and Don for their kind hearts. It's just unfathomable that there was a town full of people who were Angry at them for having compassion and empathy for somebody else, just because they were not white... Colour is one of the LEAST important things I can think of when it comes to somebody's worth as a human. My heart is aching for Carol, and her family. Especially in the wake of her murder when the people who were supposed to help most just didn't care.
Go Norma and Don for not backing down and knowing they did the roght thing. This case I'd so sad. Carol deserved justice right then and there when it happen. The way her case was handle os so sad.
Norma and Don are the genuinely decent people you would hope would be the ones your daughter would encounter if she were ever in trouble. They did it because they saw her as a girl in danger and knew it was the right thing to do, even if it was socially unacceptable. You were too good for that town, Norma and Don. I wish she took Norma up on her offer to stay the night. 😩 My heavens, this is such a terrible story. I’m just grieved for the loss of this lovely girl for absolutely no real reason at all.
Thank you Eleanor for sharing this story. We need to have cases like this brought to the spotlight. People like Carol deserve to have their stories shared. It's heartbreaking that racism is still so prevalent in that town.
Could you imagine just how bad Norma and Don felt after finding out? They knew she wasn’t safe, tried to keep her safe and even offered a bed for the night and that same day her being killed I think I’d be a wreck thinking she would’ve lived if she stayed
I had never heard of Carol’s case, so thank you Eleanor for sharing this heartbreaking case with us. I am gobsmacked and enraged with how little effort the police put into solving her case. I hope that Carol is resting in peace. 🌹 And my thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones. 💞 And it is heartbreaking that Carol’s murder was never brought to justice. 💔 I do believe that the man that ran away to Florida may have been the accomplice…

Something that seems to be overlooked but why was their boss sending two young black women into a known racist town? That seems insanely irresponsible to me.
I agree. Absolutely shameful.
I thought the same thing. They likely knew they'd be injured, harassed or fail their assignment because of the racism in that town. Very suspicious.
Yes!!! He should hold some responsibility for that!
I thought the same thing!!
Wouldn't be surprised if he was a "supremesist" on the low and sent them there to satisfy the sickness lot the clan...
they called her "n-word girl" WHILE REPORTING ON HER MURDER??!! never have i been more sad and disgusted. I cried through the entire second half of this video, unbelievable. Thanks for telling her story
this infuriated me so much i nearly threw my phone. disgusting. all of those on the case should have NEVER even had a badge !!!
Yes it was ‘negro girl’, it’s so awful 🤦🏽♀️
@@judywalter9412 that’s so horrible and such a lack of respect coming from the people who are supposed to so called “protect and serve.”

i genuinely struggle to believe that the police ‘accidentally’ failed to do basic things in this case like not tape and close off the crime scene.
they definitely did it on purpose
it's also so ridiculously common for pd's to do stuff like this. plus they were most likely racist.
Same if 50% of the men were part of the kkk no doubt a big chunk of them were cops too.
Yea me either. They didn't care is what it boils down to 😔 Disgusting and beyond heartbreaking 💔

1 thing I'd be certain of is when fiona does get justice it will bring this country to its knees because of the cover-up
@Leon Gillihan oh no 😢
I'm so sorry to hear this about your sister.
Plenty of old people are horrible, and often become worse in their old age
i love that your always so incredibly respectful and empathetic in your vids, THIS is what true crime reporting looks like!! love you eleanor
Didn't know that. What area have these!!? That's insane.
What about the black versios of those towns? Cause there are plenty of them in the eastern parts of Louisiana

I was born and raised in Martinsville. I didn't hear of this story until I was an adult. This is so heart breaking!

Sometimes. She has also done videos more recently that focused on the murderer… kinda disappointing tbh
WhT ur saying is all wrong and just biases. So I suggest u get over it

I thought that too.
Or if she left just a little later when her coworkers were there :(
Or in the case of Emmett till. They would have dragged her out of their house to kill her.
Bless Norma and Don for sheltering Carol, good on Shirley's sister in-law for writing the letter and call. Shame on the towns police work at the time. RIP Carol 💖
i think what helped this was because Shrilee had fallen out with her dad and she revealed the tea 2 decades later. had she been on good terms with him. she could have kept quiet.
As someone who grew up in Indiana, the minute I heard you say "Martinsville, Indiana" I went "oh no"
That place is still bad news
Same exact thought .
Thanks, Eleanor!!❤️❤️
Edit: Martinsville did place and dedicate a memory stone for Carol in 2017!
I grew up going to the horse auctions in Rushville almost every weekend. I'm from a small farming community in Ohio. It makes me feel nauseated to think of the racism in the communities throughout Ohio and Indiana.
This is terrifying… especially since there’s sundown towns that STILL exist.. makes me terrified to travel if I was just passing through
The policeman who gave only a warning should also be jailed.
@@AngelDelight69 The stalkers actually weren't the ones who later murdered her.
@@iija5238 I guess thats a side effect of reading comments while listening
For…. What, exactly?
What law did they break, besides offending you?
Thanks for doing this story. I am glad that she isn't forgotten in the public.
Huge respect to the couple who helped Carol and her family. It takes courage to do that especially while living in that hell like neighborhood.
Exactly even another young black girl.
I guess they figured oh it’s day time they’ll be ok idk just heartbreaking
My coworker lives in a sundown town and it’s so scary for her. This is a very real thing with very real fear attached to it. So so sad.
They had a sundown town in an episode of Love Craft Country.
@M B yes; sadly.
it’s sad how much we still don’t know about the black lives that were lost in these sundown towns. it effects so many of us even to this day. i wasn’t even surprised they didn’t even name her in articles or reports. my grandmothers birth certificate doesn’t even say black for her race just the n word. it’s insane to think how these things aren’t even that long ago and can continue when we’re supposed to be more open and have laws in place.
@Mumtaz Amiri would “african-american” help?

this case is so heartbreaking. I’m not really sensitive when it comes to listening to your videos but this one really had me in tears.
Smh I'm sorry you went through that I hope your ok 🙏🏻 💙
It is truly sad. I realised something quite scary recently that I have experienced more cat calling and verbal harassment when I was under the age of 18. Yeah happened to me a lot of times. I remember once I was in a crowded bus and some one touched my personal area I tried to release my self but he was so strong and I didn't know whose hand it was. All I could do was screaming so loudly until he let go. It was 6pm and rush hour and I was just 17.

Oh, Elenore. You're such a kind person.
