    Martin Brest (the director) really handled the balance of humor and drama in this well. The humor is hilarious, and when it drops into that really serious tone, it does it SO well. Another movie of his, Midnight Run (with Robert Deniro) is equally as good with the humor/drama balance. It's an amazing movie, also.

    I once had a very similar experience as the Rosewood arrest scene...
    I was halfway through military boot camp and at that time you got a weekend off to visit home.
    Was traveling by rail, together with another guy from my unit, when we witnessed five guys stealing from a shop at a rail station.
    We at once sprang into action, without a thought. 😅
    So we literally shouted for them to stop, because we were making a citizen arrest!...
    Well, they turned, squared up and went towards us, and we thought we were f'd, for sure!
    But after taking just one or two steps, they just stopped, dropped to the ground and lay there...
    I can tell you, it was a great feeling, having subdued five criminals with just our martial prowess and innate authority!
    Yeah, we hadn't noticed the group of burly military police who had followed us into the shop, to reprimand us for not wearing our caps in the prescribed manner...
    Well, under the circumstances they let it slide, but we were pretty deflated, nonetheless...
    Without that backup, we would have been smeared all over the floor, so much for our prowess and authority... 😭

    I love that this is a an R rated action comedy-drama and yet they didn’t take the easy route by having Axel and Jinny conveniently have a romance. Axel is his Randy self, but he doesn’t try to hook up with his high school friend. And Jinny is an integral part of the plot. She’s not a love interest. Everyone has their own character and they’re not just plot devices.

      @fidel2xl ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Hiraghm - Nope…not true. In 1984, it would not have been a huge deal. No one cared about that back then in movies and TV shows. It’s just a good movie that did not require an additional romance angle. Besides, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, and Michael Jackson were the biggest entertainment stars of the 1980s. They had full and final say on all their projects during that decade.

      @christhornycroft3686 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Hiraghm If they'd done it today, it would have sunk the movie, but nobody would have cared, especially if involved nudity. There were plenty of movies in the 90s and 2000s that were wrecked by an out of nowhere sex scene that probably should have been a deleted scene that ended up on an adult website. A lot of times, it just halted the movie. You're so busy trying to figure out if they'll show a boob that it takes you 10 minutes to get back into the plot. I find a lot of times, action movies just throw in a raunchy scene where it doesn't belong and sure, it's fun to watch, but by that time, you've forgotten where the movie was plot-wise and you almost don't even care. If the story calls for it, fine. If it doesn't, save it for an erotic thriller.

      Ronny Cox does like that his Robocop character , Dick Jones , has been voted number One villain on TV .

      True. It was also directed by Martin Breast. Midnight Run is exceptional. It's equally as good as BHC, and imo, a lot better than BHC 2. It's just as funny as BHC (Grodin, Pantaliano and Ashton really crack me up), and if anything it might even have more soul. The scene where De Niro visits his ex wife and sees his daughter for the first time in a long time is so well played, so awkward. The ending is also poignant, and I'll expect it to be even more so now that Charles Grodin has passed away.

    I like how the whole time you were always suspicious of minor characters like Jenny and the police lieutenant! lol They were never in on anything. This movie wasn't about twists. It was just a straight up fish-out-of-water cop comedy action movie to showcase Eddie Murphy's comedic genius and screen presence. This was a star vehicle for Murphy and the plot was really secondary. A lot of the humor comes from the minor characters' subtle reactions to his antics as much as Murphy's comedy. Additionally, it showcased comedy actors Damon Wayans (the hotel buffet guy) and Bronson Pinchot (Serge) in scene-stealing cameo roles.

    No, the song is not from Family Guy, it’s called Axel F, (the name of Murpheys character) and was composed for this movie specifically, in 1984. The following year it was number 1 in the U.S.and won a Grammy. I can’t emphasize this enough, the song was made for this film, and only this film by Harold Faltermeyer, a German composer and “keyboard wizard”.

    You can thank the fabulous Pointer Sisters for the "Neutron Dance" tune during the truck/police car chase and the" Axel F "theme composed by German musician Hans Hugo Harold Faltermeier. Of course, Family Guy would use in a cut away LOL! Also Axel's boss Inspector Todd ( portrayed by the late Gilbert Hill ) was an actual police inspector and later commander for the Detroit police department.

    The second one was just about as good, with a much more involved plot. The third one, not so much.
    Another one similar to this was Murphy's first real movie was called 48 Hrs. It has a plot I think you'll really like. It also has a sequel called Another 48 Hours.
    This came out after Trading Places, which was his second movie. Following the success of Beverly Hills Cop and the sequels, he moved more into true comedies and tried for a signing career. The acting went well.

    Beverley Hills Cop 2 is really worth the watch too, directed by Ridley Scott's sadly departed brother Tony Scott.
    I was raised in a Baptist Christian home with one family TV and VHS player. When I was 12 I somehow talked my mum into buying this for me for Christmas and the whole family sat down to watch it.
    Detroit City was decimated by two things: segregation and the collapse of the motor industry. All the low rent factory workers lived by the factories and once they closed the city fell into degradation, and eventually declared bankruptcy. There are miles and miles of houses that look like something out of an apocalypse movie. Drugs, unemployment and violence are rampant. Police, education and social services are underpaid and overworked. Yet like most American cities, there are still the rich white commercial districts which are doing well.

    Eddie had trouble keeping his face straight when talking to Bronson Pinchot (the odd foreign guy in the art shop). You can see him almost breaking a few times. And when Eddie was doing the supercop story, the actor playing Taggart was breaking and had to look down and pinch his nose to try to hide it. This movie looks like it was a blast to shoot. And yeah - very simple story, no plot twists or mysteries. Just a straight forward buddy-ish cop comedy.
    Another movie from the same era you should check out is Fletch, with Chevy Chase. Almost the same kind of character as Axel - a fast talking chameleon, but this time he's an investigative reporter.
