There's a moment in the live performance when he takes a deep breath and he opens his eyes and has this deathly stare for a split second, freaking chills me to the core every time I see it......🤘😶🤘

Ya that moment is one of those brutally beautiful things.. you could always hear the pain in him thru his voice, but this performance gave the perfect vision of it all as well.. just how much he poured himself into the music, and that wasn’t even a Nirvana song, he just loves music and feels it so deep… that part, with the breath, pause and look is just chilling.. and hindsight makes it haunting knowing what was to come next… you could tell he was tired and exhausted, old soul for sure I believe…

People say this was originally by Lead Belly, but it actually goes back even further than the 1940's, to before audio recordings. The original writer is unknown but it goes as far back as the mid-late 1800's. It was sung in various forms, under different titles, "Black Girl", "In the Pines", "My Girl", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", etc. The version Nirvana did was probably mostly influenced by one of Lead Belly's versions.

"Is he OK?" No, he was definitely not OK. Kurt was ALWAYS in pain of one sort or another. If it wasn't his marriage (Courtney Love), it was his unidentifiable stomach condition or the catastrophic heroin addiction that he developed while trying to deal with his physical pain and which was enabled by his wife. On top of all of that, there was his existential pain about being an icon that he never wanted to be. It's no wonder that he killed himself shortly after this was recorded.

"vocal fry" is what it's called. Cobain spent a LOT of time getting that technique down. It's interesting to listen to his demo recordings from about age 18 up to around 22-23 when he really started nailing it. Apparently it was a really big deal for him to get his voice exactly how he wanted it to be - it was definitely purposeful.

The hedonism of the 80s followed by this grunge music that was emotional and earnest like the blues. This is also the first time I really agree with one of Lex's analogies. So to clear up your "what is grunge" debate. The bands that all came out of Seattle area knew each other and had this dirty, muddy sound and began to be known as "grunge." But record labels began to use it to market any similar sounding band which people did not like. Turning something organic into something manufactured. Completely not in line with the feeling of "grunge" Hence the debate, is something "grunge" or alt rock. Well depends who you ask.

from what i recall, the bands themselves weren't calling it grunge. They were calling themselves rock bands. The "Grunge" term was purely by record label execs who slapped it everywhere and gave it the name.
Grunge was still alternative and each band had something going for it. Alice in Chains has some metal to me, Nirvana was punk, etc.
