    The impressive great crested newts were much commoner in my granddad's childhood pre-war. They were even in garden ponds in the Kent suburbs where he lived. I've seen a B & W photo of him and two friends each with big black crested newts on their palms that they caught in a slow stream. I've only seen them twice, most recently when looking for dinosaur bones in a quarry near Dorking. No dinos, but in a clear pool I saw a dark form come up to gulp a bubble of air and saw 4 more beauties walking on the clay bottom. Wondrous sight.

    Really nice to see so many, I have never had newts in either of my ponds.

      Topvideos1001 Reviews I'm sure they will colonise the pond eventually!

    The great crested newt reminds me of Godzilla.

      It's great to see some young people interested in herpetology. I've had a look at your video and I'm afraid to say that the newt you found was a male smooth newt. Feel free to message me to chat more.

    Thanks British Herpetology, for uploading. I love Newts. I have smooth Newts in our small wildlife pond every april, I've counted about 16 Newts so far. I'm using Elodea Crispa oxegenator plant which is soft enough for the females to wrap their eggs in. unfortunately there is a Newt in the pond, and it's under the ice, but it's still alive. i've heard that the bottom of the pond can be a degree warmer than the top, but maybe i'm wrong. let me know in the comments if i'm wrong, and i'll gladly stand corrected. Also, forgive me for any fatal spelling and grammar errors. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!. Take care :)

      Sorry for only just seeing this, I hope the newt was okay. As long as the pond wasn't frozen for too long I'm sure it would have been okay. When you find amphibians in your pond, please report them here! www.recordpool.org.uk/

    Great video, counted 37 in my own pond a few nights ago, does setting this trap in mating season cause problems?

      The most newts I ever saw were in the small but deep pond at the visitor centre at Avebury one Summer. The water was clear and there were few pond weeds s I started counting. I lost count at over 200 - they kept moving around! Nearly all were common newts, around three-quarters lovely 'dragon like' males, but there a few palmate newts in there too. A lone great diving beetle larva was bothering them but not large enough to overpower them yet. Spellbinding to watch these newt hordes.

    A couple of alpine newts have been found around a pond on a small island in British Columbia, Canada. A friend at the Royal BC Museum has asked if I could take a look for them as I live fairly close by. Are plans for this newt trap available somewhere for people to copy?

      There are other types of newt traps out there, such as funnel traps if you want to try those?

      @@BritishHerpetology thanks, I have minnow traps that will work. I do like the trap from the vid, though, as it appears the newts would have access to air at the top of the bag.
      Thank- You for Your response

    Didn't know they could climb vertical walls, I've only seen Alpine newts and yellow salamanders here in Scotland?🤗

    We’ve just found 6 in my back garden moving slabs my 12 year old is lookin after them are they better off in water or soil ?

    • @BritishHerpetology
      @BritishHerpetology  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there, they're better off in the undergrowth as they only head to ponds to breed which would have been during the spring. If you can, please get some photos and record your observations here: www.recordpool.org.uk/ Thanks!

    How do they get in and out of those ponds?

    • @BritishHerpetology
      @BritishHerpetology  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Despite their appearance, they're extremely good climbers!

    • @PalaeoClive237
      @PalaeoClive237 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a newts very moist and the surface isn't vertical they can stick to it and climb quite well, if slowly. I once found a number of newts inside a hole in a tree around three feet from the ground. Probably a little safer from predators in there rather than on the ground.

  • @raphlvlogs271

    how long can they survive outside of the water?

    • @BritishHerpetology
      @BritishHerpetology  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. Newts only return to ponds to breed, feeding in the local terrestrial environment throughout the rest of their active season. As long as you don't remove a newt tadpole from a pond (which will still have gills), they can survive out of the pond indefinitely - as long as they have food and somewhere damp to hide.

    • @PalaeoClive237

      There are many common newts under logs in the neighbour's garden which look and feel very dry. The ones in the compost heap look and feel less dehydrated as there's more moisture under there. Whether the newts under logs survive to breed I'm not sure.
