Brilliant little intro, just the right amount of info to let me get started. I’m going to build something close to my gutter run-off, and will hopefully achieve some mosquito control as well. Thank you.
I'm amazed you didn't put down sand or even a bit of old carpet under the liner! You risked it being torn from stones/sharp bits in the hole, especially having to stand in it to push it down. Luckily there looked to be no holes.

Brilliant video ! No annoying 'muzak' & straight to the point. I've subscribed ! A QUESTION : I have a pond in my garden, it produces lots of lovely postage sized toads each Spring. I also have a stream , it's fast flowing, so I can't put Minnows & Sticklebacks in it to attract the Kingfisher that we occasionally see. Does anyone know if Kingfishers will visit a pond of about the same size as the one in the video, if I stocked it with Minnows & Sticklebacks & sited it near the stream ?
we built feature pond in garden no others around, frogs appeared from no where, now we have lots of frogs tadpoles without lifting a finger, apart from putting native plants in
It is also extremely important to build a hibernation area for the amphibians and reptiles. A simple permanent brush pile provides food such as wood ants and grubs plus winter hibernation shelter for tree frogs and such.
How do u make a pond like this in a colder climate when it gets cold in November and frogs will need to hibernate the tarp will prevent them from going deep enough their bodies will perish
Could you not create what I think is called a hibernaculum? There's a few video's on youtube about how to create one and from what I remember they're good for all amphibians you might find in your garden.
Thank's I'll add gravel and plant's didn't know. Thank's on the Hugo culcher also Going to make that first. My I suggest air stone or waterfalls or would air be bad?
I have a pond but have noticed away from the pond on a concrete path that a frog has taken up esidence in a shallow area of water inside a 'collapsable washing up bowl - these are sold for caravaners. It is now November and the frog is still there. It is getting very cold at night. It is alongside the house that is very sheltered with high walls so it may not get cold blasts of air but I am thinking of trying to give the pond a container or an overturned plant pot complete with soil and twigs etc somewhere to go when cold - would this work do you think or should I leave it to him to find somewhere. There is no soil nor grass where he is. Complete hard surfacing with tall (4 ft) pots on raised plant saucers. Thank you. I enjoy your films
How do you keep the water clean,? Just a beginner gardener, but getting on a bit and want to keep it simple. I'm in Scotland and the rain & wind is horrendous. Thanks in advance ☺️
Hi there, just make sure you keep topping it up and replacing any evaporated water. Also buying one of those solar panel water pumps will help to keep the water aerobic which will help the beneficial bacteria keep the water clean! It will be naturally self cleansing anyway but this will help
Covering the pond to protect the tadpoles from birds and feeding them are not necessary. Deep water and dense vegetation should be sufficient to protect the tadpoles from predators, as they are better camouflaged than goldfish. Covering the pond blocks out the sunlight that the plants should receive. Feeding them is acceptable, but only in moderation or the pond will become polluted with waste. Algae and pond plants are sufficient to sustain them.

Hello! Thank you for this helpful video. Quick question: I see that you have a dog. Is your dog well trained enough to drink the pond water, or how do you keep them from getting too curious? 🤔 trying to plan ahead since we let our dog play in the yard.
My whole project revolves around relocating the frog pond next to my garden, which is going inside my new chicken run... How did the algo know!? :) I have a small 4x8x3ft pond, and there must be 50 green frogs living there...very cool entertainment and great for bugs. Pestilence? Hope not :)

I do not like the way you put the pond liner in. You should have made it a little bigger with a step so you would not see the liner. The way you did it the rain will wash away the mud and you will see the liner again. The tad poles don’t mind either way. 😀
Maybe put a small aerator or air stone that bubbles the water but doesnt suck up the tadpoles, I used it in a fish pond and just a small one kept the mosquitoes away for a few months until I took my aerator out
My frogs leave my pond at night and go hang out by my landscape lights. And catch the bugs attracted to the lights. They are quite smart.
Don’t forget to dechlorinate the pond water or leave for a few days. The chlorine from tap water can kill tadpoles.
And salamanders too
It varies from Countries to countries
Loved this video. Really informative with good ideas. Great close-ups especially the little tadpole munching on fish flakes. 😍
Very excellent ideas! The mound! Love it.

I am just learning - one site said tadpoles fed only lettuce will develop tumors.
Important to have a ramp / slope with grip so the animals can easily climb in and out. Steep plastic they can't hold on to.
Week ago built a pond. You inspired me to set a hugelkultur and some hiding places now :)

The cheap tent liner is a great idea! How can I prevent mosquitos from becoming an issue in the pond?

Big question for you, does this water have to have some sort of draining or movement system or can it just be a fixed pool of water?
It should be a fixed pool, most amphibians dont like rivers, they yousually live in pounds
nice easy to watch video m8, been anting frogs and toads to combat the arm of slugs. can you do a vid on pond plants and what they attract
Im no good at pond plants unfortunately sorry

You want the algae inside of the pond. It's better for the tadpoles.
I dug a pond 2 feet deep and have to throw away dead frogs every spring because of the liner, they can not escape the freeze.

What are the dimensions of your frog pond?
Can you use an aerator to keep it from getting mosquito larvae?
Sure
some types of tadpoles may eat them and mosquito fish definitely will.
I might make that
How do you keep a nice pond like that from being a breeding ground for mosquitoes?
Having frog tadpoles in the water
Add an aerator to move the water
That wasn't toad spawn that was just separated frog spawn. Toad is long single strips
Exactly, with toad eggs the black spots inside the egg mass are much closer to eachother and with less jelly around.

@@roleat they were floating, so it wasn't predators.
You think if they were missing, I would not have considered predators?
There wouldn't be algae issues if you had used rainwater instead of tapwater. Tapwater contains nitrates which algae thrive in.
I had no idea, thanks
I agree. Should have treat the water or leave it for at least 24 hours so the chemicals in the water can dissipate.
Why is the water not clear? 😞
If the water was clear the birds would be able to see the frogs.
Jon M: Wow, that’s pretty smart of you!
It's because of the clear from the pebbles in the water is making the water murky
Its actually better this way so birds and other predators cannot eat all the tadpoles
And in a while it’ll be green because he used tap water
