Phil Collins has lived three lifetimes. One as the one of the greatest rock and progressive musicians of the 70s. The second as one of the most successful and popular solo artists of the 80s and 90s, and now his third life, through his immensely talented son who seems to be able to replicate his parts immaculately, but with a fresh modern sensibility. Nic is awesome, can’t believe how brilliant and professional he is at his age.

@@RobTaylorDrums - The comment regarding Phil’s “Three lifetimes” was sufficiently nauseating, never mind inaccurate. These posts ignore the years of damage Phil did to himself and to music in general with his mind numbing SAMENESS. That he’s in a wheelchair now doesn’t change any of that. Of course, we all like what we like but what lay at the core of this echo chamber is personal NOSTALGIA. I am nostalgic for The Monkees because I was a kid when I first heard them. However, that doesn’t mean they were great. And neither was Phil Collins!

Good point that was made about 45 minutes in. Phil listened to what his bandmates were doing and his playing is always planted firmly in the melody. Between the basic 3-2-1 groove of "Apocalypse" and Tony playing at his own pace, there was a lot of improvisation going on.

While so much has been made about Nic's dad's live drumming prowess, people tend to forget how Nic's dad possessed and expended so much energy singing, doing tambourine dancing, and playing piano/keys (in his solo tour) in addition to playing drums for 2 hours in thousands of shows in one lifetime. The fact that his other "activities" on stage didn't affect his drumming (at least until the end of the 2007 Genesis tour). Bottom line is, energy-wise, Nic's dad was a BEAST, hands down. Mad respect.

I watched this again tonight, as I skimmed it the first time. Anyone who thinks Nic Collins is some sort of lite-beer drummer, who was some sort of expedient PR choice, doesn’t know what they are talking about. He is a PHENOMENAL drummer, and the way he breaks down these complex odd time parts - including slowing them down - shows how technically proficient he is. Brandon did great with this walk through, and I’ve had to completely reappraise my view of this young man. Very very impressive..

Nic has put the hours in, he’s studied, sweated and dedicated his young life to honouring his father’s legacy. But he doesn’t have it, that magical touch, the bounce, the groove, the swing, the beautiful grace that Phil had - great drummers can’t be copied, it’s that simple. They are distinctive, unique. I remember hearing Tony Banks talking about having Phil behind the kit again at Milton Keynes ‘82 (I was there) when Phil was behind the kit. He said no one, not even Chester, played it just right, not like Phil. Even Chester has said he had to change his traditional technique in order to get close to Phil’s style. (Self taught) You can’t imitate that creativity, it’ll always be a facsimile. Like Bonzo, Gad, Rich, Copeland, Grohl et al... If you birth the grove, no one can ever sound the same. There’s never been a great band without a great drummer. We know this. If you wanna be great, you have to create not imitate.

Phil was such an attractive young man too. Oh my...Nic still has his hair, nicer beard. Around '73 Phil looked a bit like Kurt Cobain at moments, similar, I might add, to the way Brad Pitt resembles Marlon Brando in Streetcar... But this is not what these men are about. So ... on with it.
Genesis was for me like so many, as depicted in the lyrics somewhere on Duke: "you're the ones we've been waiting for". They smashed it, they got it right, the ability to play truly beautiful soaring bits, and go directly to super power dramatic parts, and circle around, ramp down and stick a landing. They knew how to not let a song get boring. The elements were as Banks describes, melody, chord structure, and atmosphere- and I'll add unpredictability, and variety able to span 20 + years.
It was all fascinating, thrilling, transporting and fulfilling to the psyche. Complex and rich. The older the 70s album, the more perhaps an acquired taste I'd say, but worth the challenge. The later the album, the less I can still find that thrill except to hear once in a while. There's alway at least one song that still has that element of prog rock, the Tony Banks touch. Do I ever need to hear Dodo again? Not really. HA! I remember Collins on stage at a point in that show between songs saying "people are always asking why play this piece of shit versus that piece of shit"... Hilarious. Always a funny and fun interviewee. I'm going to be crushed when these men pass.
Back in the day, people around me, both older brothers and friends didn't get it. They had little mincey criticisms. The first tune on And Then There Were Three is in 10/8. Nothing is in 10/8. It's just giving the record company execs the finger for the pressure for hits. I'm sure they never "got it" either.
There's too much to say, they were, and still are, the musicians of my life.

We can really appreciate a son's love for what his father did, and it is not at all trivial that Nic has not only succeeded in picking up his father's legacy, but that he wants to make an effort not to make his drumming a mere repetition, perhaps even a simplified one, of what his father did.
I see a humble, passionate person, adept at communicating and curious about exploring his own limits in order to overcome them and achieve new goals. Nic can be an inspiration to many new drummers and I hope he will bring new lustre to the immortal Collins brand and build something totally personal with which to be remembered by anyone who loves music and drums.
Thank you Drumeo for this wonderful contribution.

In no way is Nic just "carrying on the Collins name". He's living proof that he is very talented. It's very difficult to play to many of the older Genesis tunes. Phil was also in Brand X, (Fusion band). Nic has a great father who taught him well at a very young age.

I saw The Last Domino tour. Nic you did an incredible job. This was a real treat of a video, and as a massive fan of the prog side of Genesis, I loved your choices of what to play and breakdown. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about Phil's emotiveness behind the kit. It really set him out from the crowd of some intensely skilled drummers back in the 70s. He'd make you feel the music of the drums, not just the beat. It's no wonder he took to singing so well too, as that's really what separates the good singers from the great, at least in my book.

  • @justinfarrell9547
    @justinfarrell9547 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I love how humble and grounded Nick is. He really works hard to honor the music. He knows how lucky he is, but has clearly worked his ass off. His playing has improved so much. Love it. Was Phil overexposed in the ‘’80’s and ‘90’s? Maybe. He was a workaholic and obviously a hugely creative period for him. He was unbelievably talented as a writer, player and arranger. He was everywhere because he was a hit maker. It was both a blessing and a curse for him. The dude is as complete and exceptional of a musician as there has ever been while at the same time, humble and insecure, in many ways. No disrespect to Tony
and Mike….both great musicians. But Phil was
    just a force of nature.

Nic is very impressive with his instruction, directions, background explanations and so down to earth. ❤
I'm with Nic regarding "Fading Lights" in the tour. It has always been a favorite song, so beautiful & bittersweet. The instrumental section is one of my favorite Genesis instrumentals (along with "The Brazilian") . I'm with Nic in the disappointment that the full song wasn't part of Last Domino set list. That song always brings me to tears so I guess it was a good thing 🥺, being their last tour. I did cry but had they played the whole song, I would have been sobbing. That instrumental section is the musical version of the song's lyrics, a life. With it's highs, lows, thunderous moments and reflections. 🥰👏🥺❤
This video was fascinating to see & hear. Thank you Nic, Brandon & Drumeo.
I also love the video ending, with Phil's Oscar & Golden Globe winning song, "You'll be in My Heart".
    Thanks again. 👏🌟
Happy New Year to everyone and wishing much success to Nic & Better Strangers. "Raincheck" is such a crushing song, in every way. 🌟🌟

As a layperson, it is unfathomable to me how anyone can play such complex drum parts so seamlessly. As much as I love Phil’s drumming, it is too hard for me on recordings to really fully grasp the level of skill of his playing.
