    To add up with what RSlash said in the end : it's also because in some cases, they can hardly prove the reason why they stopped you. So for example, if you knew you were going faster than speed limit and they stopped you for that, they would have to prove you were speeding instead of you confessing to it.

    • @thegrimharvest
      @thegrimharvest ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yes, this is correct. If you "self snitch", you're just making it harder to defend yourself legally later on if things go south.
      Respectfully only give the barest minimum of information during any encounter, and otherwise state the 5th and keep silent. Remember anything and everything you say and do can and will be used against you. So don't put ammo in their gun for them, legally speaking.

    • @agentzapdos4960
      @agentzapdos4960 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thegrimharvest Assuming you're alive when the cop gets to your window. Sometimes cops will pull someone over just to kill them, especially if it's a black person driving a car that's just a little too nice.

    • @thegrimharvest
      @thegrimharvest ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@agentzapdos4960 If you approach every encounter with the expectation that the cop is ready to mag dump you at a moment's notice, that's all the more incentive to answer as carefully as possible, ask/notify before making any movements whatsoever, plead the 5th, keep silent, and comply to the very best of your abilities, no matter how illegal or unconstitutional the actions taken against you.
      If the cop is a trigger happy power tripping thug with a chip on his shoulder and out to add notches to his gun, you don't want to give him even the flimsiest excuse to justify his actions after the fact or to muddy the waters by "resisting" or "obstructing".
      He still will try regardles, a crooked cop is gonna be crooked.
      There's no certain specific action you can take to prevent a bad cop from abusing his power. Best you can do so that it's easier for yourself and your defense attorney in court afterwards is record the encounter yourself.
      The bodycam could always "malfunction" or the footage might "accidentally" get erased after the fact, or the audio was "coincidentally" turned off the whole time.

    First Story: So basically, Karen constantly kept trying to screw OP over, told OP to complain to her supervisor, and got herself fired. Lmao, I mean she did tell OP to file complaints
    Second Story: The fact this manager caused a lot of people to quit should’ve raised some red flags that this person isn’t suited to be a manager
    Third Story: That is just being pure lazy. This IT guy will work on an issue unless its an issue for everyone? That is lazy conduct
    Fourth Story: When being a smart ass goes wrong.

      @zilesis1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      for the 3rd story, i can kinda see the logic but *only* if the IT guy was new and didn't know this was a re-occuring issue.
      in the office i work at it's common to ask around if a problem occurs before talking to IT. we do this because if it's just a "you problem" it can be fixed with a re-start or a re-install 99% of the time and re-starting/re-installing the program yourself is much faster than contacting IT and waiting for them to go through the bureaucracy before they re-start it for you.
      basically, the IT guy's problem wasn't lazyness it was rudeness. if he had taken 2 seconds to just throw out some random advice like "try updating the browser" or "try using Chrome" the OP would have filled him in that it was a re-occuring problem and it woud eventually affect other people

      That service is REALLY shoddily made if it breaks on every bowser update. The point of making something for the browser is so that anyone can use the thing easily. If you’re making it for a very specific browser, that kind of defeats the point. Then again this thing was made to work ONLY with IE, the one browser that doesn’t know what the term “standards compliance” means (thankfully discontinued as of a couple years ago).

    about the last story, I saw something terrible few times ago :
    a woman was driving a little bit too fast in the country, and at one point, she bent to search for something on the ground of the car WHILE still driving. She hurt something, and ovbiously roll over something but didn't stop, barely look into her mirror, thinking it was an animal. Later a cop stop her for a totally random reason and asked her that same question "do you know why I stopped you" and she replied something like "because I killed someone and flee"?
    It happens that she REALLY rolled avoer a child who fell in the grass and she didn't bother stop to be sure. she was arrested for a crime no one would have known she did if she said nothing

      In botany, a fruit is any fleshy pod-like object that contains seeds and came from a flower, and may not even be edible. In the kitchen, a fruit is a particular grouping of plant-based foods with a sweeter flavour profile and may include things that aren't botanical fruits (like rhubarb) and exclude things that are (like tomatoes).
      Vegetables only exist in the culinary sphere, and may come from any part of a plant, including the fruit.

    I was pulled over for doing 43 in a 25. It was 7am on a Sunday morning...not another car or person in sight. I was chatting with my teen daughter as we were driving to the grocery store on the corner to get stuff to make french toast. The officer rightfully pulled me over & I used a line I saw in a meme. The Officer asked me, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" I replied, "Because you saw me before I saw you?" & I giggled a bit. He laughed. I apologized. He glanced at my license, didn't even run it & told me to watch my speed. I apologized again and that was that 😊

    Standard license and registration talk now one of my friends had trouble with cops (she's a really bad driver) so she's freaking out even tho she should've done like our other friend(who actually has a warrant from running from the cops) and kept her mouth shut
    Car smells like a Despensery and he asked if she smoked today
    Time on the clock was 12:08am
    "No sir, not today"

      There's very few "safe" answers to that question.
      If you say anything that indicates you may know why they're pulling you over, then it's supporting the idea you're admitting guilt, which makes their job easier.
      "Was I speeding?" "Was it the twenty seven pounds of meth in my backseat?"
      If you claim ignorance, that's support for either impairment or negligence on your part.
      "I don't know. Why?"
      Probably the most neutral response would be something like
      "Please tell me, officer."
      You're not answering the question, because it's actually irrelevant and it's only purpose is to aid in providing the officer probable cause and reasonable articulable suspicion to continue the detainment or traffic stop.
      It doesn't matter if you initially know (or dont know) why the cop stopped you, because either way they're still going to tell you anyway, and anything you say can and will be used against you. So give them only as much info as you absolutely have to, and then keep silent.

      Never try to argue a point in the street either. Be polite, follow instructions (even if you believe them to be unlawful) and argue it in court. You gain absolutely nothing from trying to talk back, argue or passively resist, all its going to do is get you in more trouble. And yes resisting doesn't just mean actively fighting, crossing your arms and refusing to follow instruction or not allowing them to cuff you is still resisting and you will get charged for it.
      Oh and if you get pulled over for a ten dollar seat belt ticket definitely don't put your seat belt on when you're getting pulled over, then argue with the cop you had it on all along, crush up your 150 dollar sunglasses and start shredding the money in your wallet while having a massive toddler tantrum that you got caught and are getting a ten dollar ticket (yes there's full bodycam footage of it and it's absolutely hilarious)

      after admitting to knowing how fast you were driving, they could also just ask you to verify the specific number. if you decline to answer, you get written up for negligent driving because you'd admit to not knowing how fast you were going. if you do answer honestly, you still get the speeding ticket. it's a lose-lose situation if the cop's smart about it.

    Actually, the first time I got pulled over, I was speeding and was late for work. I saw the cop on the side of the road after getting over a hill. I pulled over before he ever got the chance to turn his lights on. Was very apologetic, told him I was late, what I did for a living and admitted I was wrong and would be more careful. Fun fact: some police departments are doing away with the phrase "do you know why I pulled you over". There was a murderer who fled the scene and was pulled over by two officers for speeding. The first one he didn't shoot and the other he did. The reason he shot the second officer was because the officer asked if he (the murderer and speeder) knew why he was pulled over. He thought the officer knew of the murder and shot him before he could be arrested. So out of safety precaution, departments are moving away from using that phrase.

Dogs, deer and dimwits (mostly kids but they don't know better sometimes) a ticket will cost the same 1-9mph and the same for 10-19 over. So long your registration is good and you don't have an out of state plate, going no more than 4 over they'll leave you alone most of the time.

    As for the tyre thing, my excuse would have been that warmer tyres grip better (which they do), that the best way to get heat in them is to accelerate and brake hard (which it is), and that the best way to keep said heat in them is to maintain good speed (which I would have been when pulled over).
    Then I would have only gotten the speeding ticket 😂😂😂

  • @bubblegumsnowdrop
    @bubblegumsnowdrop ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay, the whole "this is why a cop asks if you know why they pulled you over" Rslash says at the end is *not* true. I'm related to someone [being vague for privacy reasons] who spent over 30 years as an officer in the RCMP, and worked in traffic for a time. I've spoken to a fuckton of that relative's friends about their jobs, and pretty much every cop has to do traffic at some point [it's a career advancement thing].
    That statement is objectively false. They're evaluating *your character* and assessing risk. It's their job to make that judgment call and see if you'll do it again, if you're remorseful, etc. They act based on that assessment. If you're considered a risk, you'll very likely get ticketed or otherwise receive the punishment. If you made a mistake, show remorse, etc, then you'll be let off much easier or even with just a warning.
    Demonizing the people stuck in the shitty traffic positions [which nobody likes doing by the way, as it's dangerous and people have gotten literally assaulted for just doing their jobs] doesn't help anyone. Not the people driving, and not the officers. The cynical attitude of "they want you to be caught doing something bad" helps nobody.
    The police's job isn't to prove guilt, hand out tickets, or anything like that. It's to maintain order and preserve human life. Don't demonize people for doing their damn jobs the way they're supposed to.

    Do you know why I pulled you over?
    It's not even to get you to confess about things they don't know about. It's about getting you to confess, period.
    They do it so that they have more evidence they can put on the citation for the reason they pulled you over. So the cop pull you over for speeding he asked you, "Do you know why I pulled you over " and you respond, Because I was speeding?" he then notes that on his citation. That way, when you come to court and say, "No Judge, I wasn't speeding, he has no evidence." The officer can point to YOUR WORDS AT THE TIME.
    But yeah, if you do confess to something else, that won't help either.
    It's the same reason they ask you where you're coming from and where you're going. Don't answer questions from a cop

Reasons for this include no one ever confesses to anything above speeding, it sounds dumb, and being upfront with the driver is more likely to gain compliance and cooperation. (Info below is specifically for the U.S.)

    3) Am I free to go?
    4) Am I under arrest?

    Hmmm....
    Not entirely true - when a police officer asks, "do you know why I pulled you over?" it can go either way, depending on (a) the alleged infraction, and (b) the officer.
    There's a slight chance that they might be trying to get to to admit to further issues, however it's more likely that they are testing your awareness.
    If you say that you've no idea why you were pulled over, that could be construed as you being unaware of your actions while driving.. something traffic police take seriously.
    Think about it - if you tell a police officer that you've got no idea how fast you were driving, it doesn't look great.
    Personally I would tell a police officer how fast I was driving, but I wouldn't admit to knowing about a light being out.

    Hey everyone, I'd like to get other people's opinions on something that happened back in march. I tried making a post AITA on Reddit but just couldn't figure it out.
    I (21) live with my mother (46) and brother (20). I have been dating my boyfriend, Chris (22) for a year, but I've known him for 8 years (since freshman year).
    My boyfriend's birthday is in March and his dad had invited me to a family dinner to celebrate. My boyfriend asked if I wanted to spend the night at his house so we can do a bit of little dinking (i can't drive so he takes me home at the end of the night), i decided I was going to and we made a plan that i would tell my mom and go over to his place on Sunday and leave Monday. Well come the next week and I forget to tell her since i was doing a mountain of homework.
    I go off with my boyfriend and have a great time with his family and finish up some math homework. Chris reminds me to tell my mom before going to bed, so i do. She responded calling me disrespectful saying that I didn't tell her sooner because I knew the answer would no and that I wouldn't have been allowed over there that day. I told her that I wasn't asking her but just letting her know so she or my brother don't wait up for me. She again said that I was disrespectful making me sad since literally the day before she had told me that she was proud of me. I turned on DO NOT DISTURB as to not wake up my boyfriend and went to bed anxious.
    The next morning I had seen a bunch of texts from her and my brother calling me disrespectful and that I'm choosing a boy over my family, going so far as to saying that she didn't know who raised me. I replied around noon defending my actions essentially saying that I am a grown woman and that I've known my boyfriend longer than she knew my dad before having me. I asked her if I could come back home and she asked if I planned on moving out, i said no. When I came home around midnight (my boyfriend refused to take me sooner, wanting to spend more time with me) the house was quiet. The next day started normal until my mom got back home from work and she completely ignored me, to be honest that's kinda normal in my house when we do something bad or not to my mom's liking. So I figured it would take a day or so for her to blow off steam. A week past and I was still being completely ignored by both my mother and brother. I had an anxiety attack nearly everyday due to my abandonment issues cause by my father's death 14 years ago. It all ending on Friday when my brother told my grandma he was going on a walk, something he's never done before and was always anxious about. He would tell us where he was going ( we don't live the safest neighborhood) i wanted to join him following at a decent distance while walking my dog to make sure he was safe, he rejected the idea. I told him to bring pepper spray just in case, he rejected me. I told him that i don't like the idea of him going alone (he's always had a problem with directions and what if something happened to him) he came back at me asking if I knew what I had done this past weekend, to which I replied that I just spent the night at my boyfriend's house. He walked away and I didn't follow. I preceded to think of every terrible thing that could happen to my little brother, my only reason for me still being alive and had a full breakdown. Screaming and crying wishing to be unalived and wondering what I had done to deserve to be tortured. My mom stayed in the house seemingly uncaring that her daughter, her first born was breaking down on the floor the garage.
    My mom and I started speaking after that and I became more numb to her presence. So TH-cam Was I in the Wrong?

      I would not think so. Both your mothers and brothers reactions here are quite strange. Why are they so possessive and controlling of a 21 year old? Perhaps your anxiety about your brother going for a walk is connected to your mothers and brothers fear of you being away from home

    Last story, on the note of 'just say I don't know' to cops pulling you over. Had an incident with a cop when my brother and I were heading out somewhere, we live on a one way street but we're right at the corner where it's much faster to pull out and go in the opposite direction by, like, six feet max. It's just faster then going all the way down the road to turn off onto the stree we need to go by. We're always careful, nothing has ever happened.
    Well we did rhat, got on the main road to start our little trek, and a cop car appears out of nowhere with their flights and sirens going. Brothers pulls over and we think they're just gonna pass us on the way to something else. But nope, WE'RE being pulled over. Cop asks him why he thinks she pulled him over, he responds he doesn't know because he honestly didn't, this has never been an issue so we didn't even consider it. She starts to get a bit aggressive with him, relling him not to lie to her and stuff. All while another cop is standing by our car _in the rain_ like we're gonna try to drive away when she has his license and registration for a super minor car stop. Treating us like we were dangerous criminals. It pissed us both off.
    Especially because 1. It was something so minor and she was treating us like felons. And 2. There was/still is a _seria arsonist_ on the loose in our area and cops were wasting time on something so trivial. I'm talking three or four buildings, all on the same road, being burned to the ground in a matter of weeks, and they were pulling out all the stops on our minor traffic violation. There was also the fact we didn't see the cop car at all until it was upon us, which says to me that they probably sped through a residential area to catch us. The freakin' hypocrisy.

    Had an older cop pull me over a couple years ago. He asks, "Do you know how fast you were going?" I say yep, and it's within the speed limit (my state tolerates 5MPH over the posted speed limit). It's been long enough that I don't recall exact details, but he was fishing; the speed limit changed from the town I was leaving to highway speeds and he was checking to see if I knew where the limit had changed so he could cite me for speeding. I spent my childhood in that town, though, so when I told him _exactly_ where the speed limit change was, he left me alone.

    About the last story
    While it's generally a good idea to STFU when you get pulled over, if you know you're speeding it's better to just say "sorry, my bad, won't happen again".
    If the cop's chill, you get a warning.
    If the cop is an AH, you just triggered a cavity search.
    I'm not saying it's right or fair. But it's always better to de-escalate when you can. Besides, it's easier and safer to dispute a ticket in court.

    Call centre culture is so bad. It’s full of ego and pettiness. After 12 years in it, I had to leave. I’m never going back.

    Story 3:
    I feel like there's a version of this story where the IT-guy complains about the idiots who insist on updating their work-essential browsers immediately, breaking the webservice and forcing him to drop everything else to fix the problem they created.

    • @Juju2927
      @Juju2927 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, that would still be his problem. IT guy should know that if you don't want people to touch anything related to their system, you should not give them default access.

    Or Confess to so many, when they call for backup check and see that all of that is not true you can say
    "Of course not, I bet he told you I was speeding too"

  • @geltric4779
    @geltric4779 ปีที่แล้ว

    Despite the story being structured as though the IT guy being negligent, he was right; one person experiencing an issue doesn't necessarily require immediate action over other tickets. IT guy's use of the word "prioritize" suggests that larger problems were being tackled first and if there was really a problem that couldn't be chalked down to input error because it happened to multiple people that's actually good thing. It saves time troubleshooting the computer for problems instead of the application.

      You're probably breaking some bullshit law from the 1880s that was never repealed or superseded, and is never enforced, but is still on the books meaning you could technically still go to jail for it. Shall I arrange for the firing squad now or later?

  • @Talis116
    @Talis116 ปีที่แล้ว

    To answer the question at the end of the video... Its got nothing to do with hoping you will confess to a crime... its because when you say "Is it because of how fast I was going", or because of "Insert other minor traffic violation" you are hoping to get away with by admitting, the cop immidiately has probable cause to search your vehicle making their life a lot easier if they end up suspecting any other issues...
