Our friend Miche Braden returned to help us show what Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" would have sounded like if New Orleans blues legend Bessie Smith had recorded it back in the '20s. That note at 3:58 was so powerful that the room literally shook...
p.s. - those looking for the iconic opening guitar riff: it's at 2:04

This is the kind of voice that takes YEARS to build. You just have to appreciate how deep and powerful it is.
Seriously. Young contraltos exist, of course, but the contralto voice is really like fine wine most of the time. They tend to get better with age!
You said it! Thank you for sparing me minutes of anguish trying to wring out in words what listenng to this did for me.
@corona covid.... yeah, but can they have the sass and performance of her? I doubt it
Most women's, voices get deeper as we age. You can imagine a true contralto.... I've been singing since i was 10 (at school... At home always). At one point 7th grade we were singing and practising, learning songs for 6 different sets.... At home before school an hr or 2, an hr before 1st class, then our fine Arts class. (Choir) 1hr, morning break 20mins, 1st elective clasd (Choir) 1 HR, lunch (in the choir rm) 1 HR, 2nd elective class (Choir) 1 HR, 3 more classes (singing to and from class). Home on bus- singing...hr or more. Then singing in shower, reading music at dinner, singing during homework along with singing homework, then bed. Weekends? Forget it. And I sang to the radio all the time, my fam sang around the piano.
During holiday season with UIL and various public concerts, as well as nursing homes and hospitals..... Id have to learn 20-30 diff songs and was practicing 10+ hrs a day.
All that singing can give one a WIDE range, great breath control and stamina, projection, resonance etc. I was singing Bass at 14 with a 10min warm up. By 15 I didn't Need the warm up.i started as a 1st Soprano at 10. By 17 I could sing anything from 2nd Bass to 3rd S. W/o warm up. With warm up I could make it to 1st S.
Never mind environmental exposure (weather, allergens, smoke), if the singer is a smoker, quality of training). It takes time but not as much as youd think (calendar yrs)...... Just constant singing daily
@Corona Covid being born with the tone is a thing, mostly due to the sounding of the language, but with the power, deepness and control, I doubt highly. That's nice to be a patriot, but don't exaggerate.
She is just so sassy and jazzy and perfect. A real diva.
Absolutely, fiyah, she's a Queen!
Hell yeah!
Signe Sand Alstrup Sazzy
She could snap Axel Rose like a dry twig.
I knew this would be great as soon as I saw her. She just exudes confidence, and justly so!
She sounds so original that makes me feel G N R is the one who does the cover.
I'm sayin'! She totally owned that song!
Yep - I'm not sure I ever heard the original (I've missed a lot of music in my life), but this sounds like it was made specifically for this style and her voice.
Amen
@@acelibrarianI've listened to the original Guns N' Roses version for many years, and, hypothetically, if this jazz version was the original, it's like Guns N' Roses just took the lyrics and then wrote their own song with them. I'm not sure I'd call either one a cover, lol. They're both amazing original songs.
i dont think she is even using her vocal cords, it sounds like the music is coming straight from her soul.
Did you realize that good singing comes from the diaphragm? That's the middle of you. Your heart and soul need to match to sing like this. Let's give kudos to the musicians. They're great.
she aint bad on the piano too
Covers like this reenforce the fact that music is NOT about genre, its about talent and feeling. And this lady has those in spades. Unique and beautiful, love it.
Damn, this woman got style.

BeepingMetal She *is* style.
Damn, this plane is full with snakes.
This lady is as close to a perfect singer as one could get, she is not just an instrument she is her own orchestra, she is an absolute beauty.
Good God this woman's voice is AMAZING
Woman. Lady. Goddess. Children, this is how you SING. Sing you sassy madam!
+Lana Pugh they don't make singers like they used to..
It's weird being a fan of Guns N Roses whilst listening to this. Never heard this song, yet I know all the lyrics. I know what she'll say next, but not how she'll say it. Astoundin experience.
ImperialBiscuit its bizzare i dont l;ike jazz much and at first i though it was ok and kind of a novelty but at about halfway the song pulled me in and i really started to like it possible as much as the original but in a different way and then had an epiphene that its more to do with the song and how they aranged it and for what instruments way way more than the genre itself
ImperialBiscuit try it at 1.25 speed ;)
+borisdarkangel im on android, soo i cant :(
Joseph Skledar try to update your youtube app, i can. Im using android 5.xx and the latest update available
borisdarkangel thanks :)
9 years later and this is still some powerful sh*t. Bravo Madame Braden.
I love how she moves around while she's singing. That's how you can tell that they're truly having fun while they perform
Often, perhaps usually/always, it's unavoidable. That's not a result of having fun per se....that's a result of feeling the music, of just setting it free. Our director often hollers at us during warmups to move around lol. But it's just natural when you're really flowing and not being rigid.
Just imagine, walking down a street in the olden days of New Orleans and as you're walking you come across a bar with a sign that says "tonight's performance: Big Mama And The Bayou Boys". You walk in with curiosity to see and hear this playing at the end of the bar while you get a drink.
Big Mama And The Bayou Boys... Oh man, this is very funny, really gots me loll
That's the time I'd rather be living in
you made me laugh a lot thank you stranger !
And then years and years later Guns and Roses make a cover of the song.
O man u r amazing 😂😂😂exactly
I feel like I've been sent back into time...her voice is absolutely timeless and coupled with that dress and that attitude, she looks like she just stepped out of a New Orleans club. Absolutely beautiful arrangement and wonderful musicians to make it all come together. I can easily say that I have never, ever been disappointed by a PMJ cover.
Perfectly put, I can't get enough frankly.
awesome job
*A New Orleans club a century ago.
She needs a MUCH LARGER ROOM for her voice -she really overwhelms the entire thing! In a good way, of course~! I'd love seeing her onstage!
Forget guns and roses this is the version that has got real soul! Damn it! This woman can siiiiing!
I need more covers from this lady, omg her voice is perfect and she's so stylish
Purple Rain - Prince (Blues Cover) ft. Miche Braden th-cam.com/video/LT8dW7bGuuM/w-d-xo.html
utterlyviolet that cover was brilliant. I cried, it was so good, and so pure.
I almost twisted my back when the goosebumps hit me with those notes at the end. Damn! Can she sing?!
S.x,xdoidlsllsorro
aleesha lunn Which language is this :D?
timdella92 same here :)
that last note and slide off, so smooth, I mean to go from that high belt to a complete slide off like that. Amazing range and control.
I have to agree with whoever said the same thing on a different PMJ video: the most brilliant thing about PMJ isn't that they cover other songs; it is that their covers sound like the originals, and that the originals sound like covers of this.
I'm a massive gnr fan but this cover is simply amazing! I'm speechless!
+Nele Berlin Thank you so much, that means a lot to us!
I'm guessing that your not gonna have her cover one in a million
Hard Truth
😳 yeah, that wouldn't be awkward huh?
Its because she has about 100 times as much class as the original singer does.
I'm not a massive gnr fan but his cover is simply amazing! I'm speechless!
Even before I hit play, just by looking at the singer, I thought this would be pretty cool. But I was wrong: this is AWESOME!
You and me both! She blowed my mind! Man, I was expecting it to be cool, turns out it was just epic.
Same here!
Every time she held out a high note I went back to check if I had already liked the video
I saw PMJ this summer but I didn't know who the vocalists were going to be when I bought the tickets. I knew it was going to be a good show, but when I found out the Miche Braden was performing, I knew it was going to be a GREAT show.
For jazz afficionados, cool is not a compliment, instead it's rather an insult. It should be hot. Can't help but rave over her attack on the song. I totally love it. I wish she covers more songs and turn it into something this amazing.
I grew up with GNR, and this cover is absolutely EPIC. I didn't even know I needed this. Thank you. Love to you all!
Oh. My. Word. This arrangement is genius.
I remember being a kid and absolutely HATING it when bands would cover another artist. Now that I'm all growed up and shit, I've learned that covers produce some of the best songs.
I prefer to think of this as the original, and Gn'R did a passable cover later.
+Sven Norén I'm with you on that.
Annony Mouse definitly. I have a way bigger appreciation for them then I did when I was a kid
Facts👏👏👏👏😁😁😁
Annony Mouse agreed. I used to hate it too. These are some of the best versions of some songs. Amazing!
Slash's guitar work in "Sweet Child O' Mine is undeniably some of the best in modern times. I can honestly say that I didn't miss it one bit with a voice like hers. Holy Smokes!
Ehh. I have to disagree with the Slash part, but the vocals in this are indeed amazing.
I don't you can use the word undeniably in this context, hm
If I remember correctly, Slash absolutely hates this song, the guitar he plays in the intro was a string skipping exercise which Axel put lyrics over and Slash said it always felt like he was practicing live.
@@montyfatcat8871 i believe he's mentioned he still loves playing the solo live (wish i could link the interview, can't remember where i found it)
When I searched for sweet child o mine jazz version, I did not expect much. This version is far more than I expected. Such an excellent interpretation and combination!
I felt that note at 3:59 in my soul
I literally got tears in my eyes.
Amazing.
+Magdalena P. (abidem) Thank you!
SING IT SWEET MAMA! FILL MY EVER LOVIN SOUL WITH YOUR DELICIOUS VOICE!!! WHOO!
Ms. Miche Braden is a bona fide Diva.
Fantastic rendition from simply outstanding musicians...all of them.
How is this beautiful soul not a world renowned artist right now because damn the world needs to preserve these kinds of voices🥲
What a masterpiece! You people are fantastic. Thank you for these gems!
You people...?
Lmao just kidding.
Just looking at her I knew this was going to be an amazing performance 😭💕
indeed
thats racist
Arturo Gomez de la Vega stop
She never even mentioned that. For all we know she could have meant the jazzy attitude of that lady ;)
I felt the same Chyna!
She owns this! What confidence! What a voice! Thank you for sharing this.
Jesus, WHAT A VOICE!!!!! Absolutely love this woman!!
Holy crap, her voice is *incredible!*
Ms. Braden done took me to church on this song!! YES LORD!!!
+Jamie Williams Next up for you, grammar class.
800lb Gorilla My grammar is just fine, but thank you for your concern. My comment was a form of expression. It was not meant to be taken as a form of my grammatical skills. I am, however, sorry you have nothing better to do with you life than comment negatively on comments that were meant to be positive. Good day to you sir. *insert HUGE eye roll here*
+Jamie Williams You must be racist.
+800lb Gorilla And you must have an IQ of 60.
I'm close to waxing my mustache, dressing in a tux, and serving this lady a cold Manhattan on a silver platter, as she deserves.
Damn... that was an awesome comment!!
She'd probably prefer a sidecar, all things being equal...
I'd think.. a Sazerac..
I don’t care what she wants. I’m gonna go get it for her… 🔥
So your mustache is not waxed always? How is supposed someone´d trust you?
it’s the way I screamed “oh thank god” when I saw this cover was on Spotify
I kind of like the person Axl turns into when he doesn't eat his Snickers.
but axl has already eaten to many snickers just look at him
Isn't that the same room that was used for the singing sad clown that covered Lorde's Royals? Lol...there is something about that room I guess.
Kimani chan Indeed 'tis. Postmodern Jukebox.
Best..Comment..ever!
Axel is nowhere near this level mate.
This is absolutely fantastic. Her voice is amazing, the style is perfect, and the wind section... Damn. 1000/10
DAMN!! She is GREAT!!! Love that strong voice!!
This lead singer has the most beautiful, quintessential New Orleans proud outfit I could ever hope to imagine! Nearly as amazing as her voice! I am just in awe!!
she took me there. i love music like this
Correction, i love voices like this
Edwin Vazquez Miche Braden just got the power
I'm shocked that the internet didn't explode from too much awesomeness at the very moment this video was uploaded.
This was my first PMJ song. I’ve now been to 4 concerts and met many of the musicians. Love you, Scott and the gang!!
They are SO ADDICTING!!! Have you seen Puddles Pity Party yet?
This is MUSIC!
She kills this, I love her voice
"I wish I could sing like that." Axl Rose as he watched this video.
😂😂
@Ben Schwabe hahaha🤣🤣🤣💩😬
Touché.
Ah yes, the guy that is world wide recognized as one of best male vocals that ever lived surely has a problem with this version of the song.
🤭😅
That woman's voice!!!!. It does something to a person at some sort of fundamental level. Wonderful!
What a greater recast of the song. I just loved it. And her voice - Holy Moses! ❤❤❤ She was the perfect choice for this. Talk about knowing the genre you're working with. Have some more love darlin'. ❤❤❤❤
One of the most classic songs done in a blues style. What more can you ask for. Soulful singer!!!
D A T V O I C E
I hear dat!
This lady is extremely classy. Her voice reminds me if sipping moonshine in a blind pig in the 1920’s . I would love to hear another song sung by you. Thank you for making this song actually classy and enjoyable.
Heavy rotation. Outstanding rendition. 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Absolutely loved her.
Was for me :-)
***** Yes I love this channel,
Oh, Good Lord! I have heard the voice of entire choir of angels! Such a voice as Miche's! MY office shook on the last note. PMJB, you have done it again.
Love it!
Lord have 🙏MERCY🙏
This cover is 💯!!GENIUS!!💯
oh YEAH!!!! This is it!!! It is PERFECT to the last detail. Miche Braden - yeah, yeah, yeah - she's a New Orleans Blues Jazz Goddess here.
New Orleans FOR THE WIN Baby!
These guys took this GnR song and nailed it to the wall! They found just the right vocalist, with the right pipes, attitude, and style to pull this off! Love the costuming and vintage hair styles (maybe they're time travelers?). Perfect musicians = perfect performance. Love PMJ.
I don't know who picks the style when they do these covers, but this is awesome. I can just picture her belting it out at JazzFest. What a voice.
Scott the piano player is the arranger
pure soul and gospel , this kind or voices i luv it
she already made me smile before she start singing
Petra Timmermans exactly :D
You just new it was going to be a fantastic performance before she started singing. She definitely has a stage presence.
dayum. what an awesome voice.
If they told me Guns N Roses covered this version and had a huge hit with a cover in 1989 I would have believed it and known why, this is beautiful! My dad was born in 1940 so he may remember those 1920/1930's esq vibes, I'll be playing this for him !!
So glad to see this style is alive and well Inside this woman’s soul, as well as the rest of the band. Keep on going!
I absolutely love this rendition.
Me too! Another slam dunk by Scott and the band
Definitely. People need more blues/jazz in their lives.
You need a very specific mindset to create such chord progression that works with that vocal as well as the original. My deepest respects. Keep doing what you're doing. Don't know if you realise you're leading a revolution in music.
Not sure I agree, it's great but it's a very retrospective style
That "retrospective style" actually pulled out the melody, message, and charm of the cavalier approach of the original melody and lyrics. Happens all the time in music.
This woman's voice and this arrangement. Lawd have Mercy.
This woman is supreme!!! Oh my heavens...thank you for this! You just made my life that much brighter!!!!
The voice on this woman! Talk about DIVINE!
Seriously, that was something else. Just wow!
Jazz never dies ❤️
That voice is like Thor's hammer..
Damn that voice, its giving me the goosebumps
I've been blasted out of my chair. Send medics. And a sheetrock hanger.
I think some people are just born with spectacular and effortless voices❤
I watched this about 5 years ago for the first time, and when I watch it again and again, still gives me the chills and goosebumps. This is a musical gem. Her voice is sublime, pure gold. The musicians are superb. All that is combined to deliver a perfect performance.
I think I just fell in love with Miche Braden :o
Lord'a Mighty, Bourbon Street burning my ears again!
This is one of the best performances I've ever seen and heard!!!
Yeah I agree, sounds like GNR went to see this amazing woman and said let's copy that.
❤ I love this! This makes
Me Proud to be from Philadelphia! You’re right it doesn’t get more Philadelphia than this. Jerry I’m
Going to miss you. RIP. Thanks for the years of the best music ever! You only Rock Once! God just took the Best, no doubt about it!
Why we find good stuff like this LATE AT NIGHT?
Damn! I can't go to sleep!!
This is SO F#@*%$ING GOOD!
If Ursula the sea witch was in the bayou lol
I'm back here for the millionth time wishing I could upvote again.
PMJ always has the best musicians and vocalist, and sometimes they go beyond the best. The is one of those times. Incredible. I keep watching the performance and I keep getting goosebumps.
Every time I watch a PMJ video that takes place in this room all I can think is, "Man, it would be so cool to be in an adjacent apartment!"
+Ronald Kelley (RontotheHills) Definitely ! ;)
Id call the owner and ask if I can pay their rent for the month!
I would love to be a neighbor as well.
Any vacancies?
That voice!! Love her! Whoever gave this a thumbs-down has no taste.
Damn.. Gave me the chills... Going to go practice new Orleans jazz on my piano now.
Her voice is magical !!!❤ I love it !👍
Everything about this is right and perfect.
That voice! WoW! So much power! I thoroughly enjoyed from start to end. Thank you for this interpretation.
This is genius. The blues are the roots of rock and roll so this is a perfect pairing. Well done!
MORE OF HER. She's just so classically worn. She's lived a life that has been worth living, through hardships and toils innumerable.
When I saw Miche was back, I got so excited. She killed it, yet again.
Keep her coming please!
She's got more glam in her pinky finger than I have in my entire body.
She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry
Whoa, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet love of mine
She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by
Whoa, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Whoa whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet love of mine
Whoa, yeah
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Whoa, oh, whoa, oh
Sweet love of mine
Whoa, oh, oh, oh
Sweet child o' mine
Ooh, yeah
Ooh, sweet love of mine
Where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Where do we go?
Ooh, oh, where do we go?
Where do we go now?
Oh, where do we go now?
Where do we go? (Sweet child)
Where do we go now?
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Where do we go now?
Ah, ah
Where do we go?
Oh, where do we go now?
Oh, where do we go?
Oh, where do we go now?
Where do we go?
Oh, where do we go now?
Now, now, now, now, now, now, now
Sweet child
Sweet child of mine
one of PostmodernJukebox best covers AMAZING
