Great collection. The Sun Collection cover could have been even worse. Apparently what happened is RCA got onto Colonel Tom about the artwork and he sent them a photo of Elvis in a jumpsuit. The guy in charge of the album looked at his team and said, "Can anybody draw?" The rest is history.

Thanks, nice information. My copy of The Sun Collection is the LP HMV box set, my copy of The Sun Sessions is an australian release, not sure exactly from what year.

When my parents bought me this record in 1976, I too had never heard the Sun recordings. I still remember playing That's Alright and thinking that I must've put the player on 45RPM speed. I could not believe it was Elvis singing. I, like you, had, up to that point the greatest hits collections, the Camden records, and Raised on Rock. With the exception of Good Rockin' Tonight, I really did not begin to appreciate these recordings till many years later. Especially the sumptuous guitar playing by Scotty and the haunting echo throughout. Now it is one of my favorite records. Pure rockabilly with some ballads thrown in for good measure...the beginning of rock n' roll. I don't care much for subsequent releases with alternate tracks and such, but the booklet in the Japanese version looks pretty cool. As for the cover, I agree that the ones released overseas (I am in the U.S.) are pretty hideous. I do prefer the U.S. cover but I do agree with you that they could've come up with something so much better. Thanks for posting.

I bought The Sun Collection and The Sun Years, The MDQ in 1984. I too didn't like the covers for the The Sun Collection/ Sessions but kind of grew on me being such a great collection of songs. It's a shame it wasn't included in the 60 CD box set.

Get the magazine "uncut legends no 5" ELVIS" it has the full story of the sun collection by the man who's idea it was with everything you want to know about it including the original sleeve that he wanted RCA to use his name Roy Carr. By the way it was a very important album and it sparked and started the "Rockabilly "revolution in the uk in 1975, I know because I was one of the rockabillies.

Thanks Alan, I will see if I can find it. My older cousin was another one who got into rockabilly about the same time. I didn’t make the connection back then.

I have most of the sun session compilations as well. Not as many as you though 🙂. I’ll brace myself when I count the amount of Fun in Acapulco vinyl records you own.

The only Sun sessions I have is the HMV box set that came out in the late '80's.A lot of packaging for one c.d I thought.

I like the American album cover better than the U.K.COPY. I got it when it first came out in 1976. And you left out the 3 CD BOX SET( ELVIS A BOY FROM TUPELO ), a great boxset . Like the booklet that came with your Japanese version, seems like they always go the extra mile.

I also prefer the American cover much better and that Japanese booklet is too cool.

The American cover is a joke !!!
An Elvis ‘68 head with a 1950’s pose. Garbage.

Maybe I'm naive, but maybe those early Sun sessions were released by people that didn't really appreciate the historic value of them and therefore thought of them as 'supplementary' value rather than something more important. I showed it at the end of a video last month and needle dropped a track that sounds nicely 'stripped back' compared to much music from that time and I can only imagine that those that released those tracks on an LP thought it sounded 'un complete' without the inclusion of reverb. To our modern ears though it sounds 'organic' and honest. Yes I agree, the American cover is pretty poor. The track on it are great though. Cheers

The 1976 RCA American version cover is a joke !!! An Elvis ‘68 on top of a contourted 1950’s pose. You’re right sir, an embarrassment. 😮
