Well, as a resident of the north I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d ever see 25Kv electrified trains running on the north line. Most people do not realise that it’s not been four or five years since it was announced its actually been 14 years since it was first announced in June 5, 2008 South Australian State Budget. I remember this because I was in Year 7 and I remember reading it in the paper, even made a paper cutout of the Advertiser piece because I was so excited that we were finally getting electric trains. Adelaide was one of the last major cities in Australia to have an all diesel-powered metro network. In the original plan all lines were to be electrified except the Belair line which I had found quite interesting as electrification had been talked about for the hills since the arrival of the late SAR commissioner Webb from the United States in 1926. That’s why the rail bridge at Murray Bridge is the particular height that it is on the rail deck because they were looking towards the future of possible electric trains, even the tunnels in the hills were modified to take overhead lines if need be. Who would’ve thought it would take almost ninety to 100 years later to give Adelaideians electrified trains, crazy! But as I said to a gentleman at Kudla Station on Sunday when I saw some of electric services on the first day of operation, I said, better late than never lol 😆. He said, what it’s been five years hasn’t? I said, no, it’s been 14 years haha 😆 since it was first announced. Oh man, Rory, this is bloody fantastic to see, my friend. So happy they are finally running! I wonder how they went for the first rush hour work day today? I hope everything ran smoothly for the line. Anyhoo, great work and thanks for sharing. I will be editing my video of some spark services on the Gawler line after I’ve watched my Golden State Warriors battle it out with the Boston Celtics at the Chase Centre in San Francisco in Game 5 of the NBA Finals which is live currently. @@davidlang1125 two actually, the Grange and Outer Harbor lines, David. But goodness knows when that is going to happen, probably not at this stage. However, they are going to construct a branch line into old Port Dock station where the current National Railway Museum is. It’s hoped it will revitalise the old area of the Port and bring newfound prosperity to the area with increased tourism dollars being flooded in. When you lived in Adelaide in 66’ the original Port Dock station would’ve still been there along with all the other infrastructure. Though, today the original Port Dock station platform is now part of the main Ron Fitch pavilion in the NRM Port Adelaide. It now stands proudly as a area where people can see the difference in size of the different railway gauges used in Australia. It is now a break of gauge platform exhibit, once common in the northern part of our state and to the south as well. You should come back for a visit sometime. Oh, yes, and the Warriors won! Yippee!! They’ve been trying to electrify the Caltrain line from San Francisco to San Jose since 1992. It’s about 50 miles and has 28 stations. It’s supposed to start service in 2024 but it’s been delayed multiple times. In fact it wasn’t even a sure thing until a few years ago with lackluster progress that seemed ready to be halted. Costs has increased, as expected and recently they reported further delays due to covid, which is surprising since other rail projects have accelerated their timelines because of covid. Go figure! I never ventured to the old docks when I was in Adelaide. In fact I’m disappointed that I wasn’t as adventurous as I should have been. So yes, a return visit is in order. I may even move back to Australia if things get anymore crazy here politically. You’ve got an interesting channel btw. I’m gonna look at your videos when I have more time to do that. Yeah, the Warriors just might wrap it up next Thursday.

I'm a bit late getting here... but I just want to say: I LOVED the old diesel Adelaide to Gawler train. I travelled on it many times back in the early 80s, and a few times up until they phased it out some years ago. I so wish Adelaide would re-establish the Adelaide to Barossa Valley rail link. I'm sure, with a lot of due promotion, it could be a 'go-er'. Thanks for the video. Cheers.
Glad to see all the job is finally in service. Was part of the commissioning crew in January and February getting the signalling sorted. The experience actually promoted me to change career tracks.
Enjoyed this video. I was born in Adelaide but left for the UK in 1991. I still like keeping up with transport developments and this is good news for the Gawler Line.
This service returning was a godsend. I had been using the J1 for Elizabeth shops visits for the last 18 months.this in conjunction with 560 connection from Salisbury saves me 10 minutes on a weekend and less than that on a weekday.
Great video! I can tell you the diesel trains were so noisy we could hear them from almost all parts of town, especially at night when its quiet. And I don't even live near the track! I'm happy for them to be electrified, and yes we no longer have to rely on the horrid bus replacement service to town. Imagine the challenge when I have to fly, Adelaide Airport long term parking received a lot of $$$ from me in recent times!
I won't miss the diesel trains one bit...but there is a thought...if they can reopen the Barossa line...the diesel cars could be seconded for that line. Spruce them up a bit, put in a loo for the tourists and then send them on the way to Tanunda and beyond.
To be honest I will miss (3000s class and 2000s class) diesel train, they’re so classic and even can feel vibration and noise while running. But (4000s class) Electric train is silent t and can’t feel anything and it’s future.

The high-frequency stations are designed to work with the low frequency stations in between. If you want to get to a low-frequency station you can travel to the nearest high frequency station either before or after your chosen station get off and board the next train heading in the correct direction knowing that it will stop at the station you require. It was deliberately designed to be an interleaved train service. Because of this a train will go in each direction for a low frequency station once every 30 minutes. However these trains are spaced 15 minutes apart. This means that a train will stop at a low-frequency station headed north and 15 minutes later a train will stop at the same station headed south.
Cool video Rory. Glad to see Adelaide's train network finally starting to catch up to the standards of other Australian cities. I can't believe it's taken this long. But hey, better late than never.
@@RoryDing I found it quite nice. It’s a quiet service with good, comfortable seating. The legroom and seat recline was excellent, however the free wifi was slow. It also runs on time 85% of the time during the week. We arrived into Merredin 30 mins early and back to East Perth 10 mins early!! I wish it had a buffet too, however while we were in Merredin I got a steak pie from the bakery and it was very good
@@RoryDing I think the reason why it doesn’t have a buffer is because of the low passenger numbers. If there’s not a high demand then it might be a waste of money running a buffet. On the service on the way there, we had around 10 people on board and on the way back we had around 12 on board.
Adelaides railway network is now majority electrified with 63% of the network having cables up. Also the 14 upgraded stations have the new SAPTA wayfinding that's being gradually rolled out across Adelaide. And many stations have new shelters and resurfaced platforms.
You would hardly call Kilburn upgraded. Sure there are new shelters but they left the station 1km from the big shopping centre which includes a Costco. In a normal town like Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane, the railway station and shopping centre would be located together.
Great video - and great job getting it out so quickly too. My youth was spent travelling those tracks - so much hasn't changed even with the electrification! Keep up the superb content.
I should have said something, Rory. I was the guy in the Yellow Tshirt and Western Bulldogs Jacket on the 06.50 from Adelaide. High frequency stations. Hi is a way of saying Hello quickly. Also that standard gauge line is used for The Ghan and The Indian Pacific tourist Passenger services. I'm not sorry to see the diesels are being phased out. Many of them on the galwer Line were unreliable as the diesel would cut out and the because of that the electrical generator would stop.

8:30 - this is the epitome of SA Infrastructure Planning - they electrified the Noarlunga/Seaford Line (south bound from the CBD) first, but didn't electrify the route to the maintenance facilities... sadly, not unexpected from a state known for making a 1-way highway that swapped directions twice per day and had an opposite schedule for weekends and public holidays
Rory, Gawler is pronounced 'gore-la' not 'goo -la' :-) Yes Adelaide station has become dark due to being over built but I've seen worse in London! Also it is widely accepted that Gawler IS now the northern point of suburban Adelaide.
I thought the same thing his pronunciation, but I think it's more so his accent. I could not e wrong, but that's my thoughts on that, only 1 person can confirm that.
Nicely done Rory! I wish I visited some stations on the Gawler Line before it got electrified. 4:05 | I’d still prefer diesel railcars as electric doesn’t seem to really fit the Adelaide suburban network in my opinion. 4:30 | The 4000 Class EMUs now kinda remind me of the NGR or New Generation Rollingstock in Brisbane. 13:10 | The railway line beyond Gawler Central or the Barossa Valley railway line used to be run by the last SA broad gauge freight train, which was the Penrice Stone Train before it ceased in 2014 after the Penrice Quarry closed in the same year, 3000 / 3100 class railcars also ran specials beyond Gawler and to Angaston before they no longer did those around the 2000s. The branch line from Nuriootpa to Angaston is gone and turned into another one of those stupid bike trails… But anyways, only the Belair, Outer Harbour and Grange lines still remain un-electrified.

@@RoryDing Pretty sure the reason the Belair line won't be electrified is because a vast majority of the stations on the line are heritage listed. A heritage listed bridge in Gawler was one of the reasons the Gawler electrification was delayed during the process.
Adelaide local here - I just recently got offered a new job in Mawson Lakes, and at the same time the Gawler line was announced to be running again. Must be kismet!
A very good video to watch if visiting Adelaide & wanting to use there rail system to get around. I stayed in Adelaide on a holiday & found there bus lines to be excellent. Bus drivers & Adelaide people were to friendly & helpful if unsure & needed help. I didn’t use the rail system. Excellent information as always. Cheers Lynne Victoria 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻
I ride this line to and from work Monday to Friday. I am still yet to experience the electric trains. We’re still waiting on delivery. It will be great when the diesels are retired. Smelly noisy and slow. They have reached their used by date. Great video.

You would have to pay me quite a lot of money to travel on the Gawler line. It's been so good that the riff raff from up there haven't been easily able to commute into Adelaide for a year and a half. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

I still remember in the 70's Adelaide's surburban rail was all diesel and seems that continued into the 2000's! I did one trip during my visit to Adelaide in 1972 to Bridgewater if that still exists. Hi Rory, I really enjoyed this video and I was educated about Adelaide trains. I caught a train in 1974 from the beautiful Adelaide railway station to Peterborough where I had to change for a rail motor to Broken Hill. I wish the long distance trains still departed from Adelaide station because it has a great atmosphere or I must say it did before the upgrade. I look forward to your Great Southern review.

I came off the Indian Pacific over a week ago, and your video of the Gold single service cabin was spot on. I was surprised as to how much room there actually was in the cabin. I remembered how you put back the bed and tried it myself remembering your video. Unfortunately I think I caught Covid on the train, now in 7 days Isolation- plenty of time to watch more videos!! Gawler, old bean, .is pronounced 'Gorler'...that's the weird English language for ya. As for electrification of the Adelaide suburban lines...it is grossly overdue. While other states have had electrification, ours is behind the times so badly, but at the same time, it is good to see it being done, especially the Gawler line. I have been sick this last couple of weeks but, as soon as I am well, it will be onto the bus to Smithfield railway station and onto the first train that comes along. I missed the official freebie opening, but there will be many more trains to grab. As I said, long overdue.

Untill very recently I didn't even know Adelaide had suburban trains! But wow they look pretty nice on the inside! It's nice to see that Adelaide Metro cares about being more efficient and using this line, however it's a bit sad that the 3000/3100 class trains are being removed slowly from most lines. What is funny is that the 3000 class is a diesel version of an electric train and the acity 4000 class are an electric version of a diesel train. Also maybe there is an opportunity to run the 3000 series to Balaklava from gawler if the line still exists.
I think that Australia’s railways should be electrified to cut down on Co2 emissions. Especially with railway lines in cities that aren’t electrified to be electrified and new and current trains to serve the newly electrified lines.
But Belair line will never electrified because fire risk, this line is between of south Australian bushes. I forgot to mention South Australia Government announced.
Just a quick note for anyone interested: this train, while being the first train TO Gawler Central, was by no means the first electric train on the Gawler line, instead it was the second, with the first leaving half an hour earlier FROM Gawler Central, all of the festivities happened for THAT train.

Hilarious they close the line to electrify it. Then we go back to early 20 th century in Melbourne and Sydney and no closed. They worked around the running steam trains. The more we go forward we actually go backwards.
And the early Tait carriages were built to be operated by steam; then retrofitted for electrical operations. The much latter repurposed as vintage train carriages.

Are you aware if the sleepers on the Gawler line are built for dual gauge like those on the Seaford line? This might be relevant if there is the possibility of a standard gauge electrified passenger service to Mount Barker! It could be part of a grander plan to standardise all the electrified lines in Adelaide!

8:30 - this is the epitome of SA Infrastructure Planning - they electrified the Noarlunga/Seaford Line (south bound from the CBD) first, but didn't electrify the route to the maintenance facilities... sadly, not unexpected from a state known for making a 1-way highway that swapped directions twice per day and had an opposite schedule for weekends and public holidays
Yeah I couldn't believe that part. How do you build a maintenance facility for electric trains and not connect it to the electric network!
Rory, Gawler is pronounced 'gore-la' not 'goo -la' :-) Yes Adelaide station has become dark due to being over built but I've seen worse in London! Also it is widely accepted that Gawler IS now the northern point of suburban Adelaide.
I thought the same thing his pronunciation, but I think it's more so his accent. I could not e wrong, but that's my thoughts on that, only 1 person can confirm that.

4:05 | I’d still prefer diesel railcars as electric doesn’t seem to really fit the Adelaide suburban network in my opinion.
4:30 | The 4000 Class EMUs now kinda remind me of the NGR or New Generation Rollingstock in Brisbane.
13:10 | The railway line beyond Gawler Central or the Barossa Valley railway line used to be run by the last SA broad gauge freight train, which was the Penrice Stone Train before it ceased in 2014 after the Penrice Quarry closed in the same year, 3000 / 3100 class railcars also ran specials beyond Gawler and to Angaston before they no longer did those around the 2000s.
The branch line from Nuriootpa to Angaston is gone and turned into another one of those stupid bike trails…
But anyways, only the Belair, Outer Harbour and Grange lines still remain un-electrified.

I live in Belair. That's why I take the bus to and from the city. The train takes 30min to get down the hill.
@@RoryDing Pretty sure the reason the Belair line won't be electrified is because a vast majority of the stations on the line are heritage listed. A heritage listed bridge in Gawler was one of the reasons the Gawler electrification was delayed during the process.

A very good video to watch if visiting Adelaide & wanting to use there rail system to get around. I stayed in Adelaide on a holiday & found there bus lines to be excellent. Bus drivers & Adelaide people were to friendly & helpful if unsure & needed help. I didn’t use the rail system. Excellent information as always. Cheers Lynne Victoria 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻
I ride this line to and from work Monday to Friday. I am still yet to experience the electric trains. We’re still waiting on delivery. It will be great when the diesels are retired. Smelly noisy and slow. They have reached their used by date. Great video.
Great Video Rory! keep up the great content! I will miss the diesel railcars on the Gawler line, but it was nice to see new electric trains on it. I managed to go to Kudla railway station and watch a couple of railcars go past. You should do more reviews on other Adelaide metro railway lines. see you in the next video!
You would have to pay me quite a lot of money to travel on the Gawler line. It's been so good that the riff raff from up there haven't been easily able to commute into Adelaide for a year and a half. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

So pleased to have found your channel. I like all the other videos in your list will get to them eventually. I am subscribed. I was always surprised how long it took Adelaide to get electrification. I still remember in the 70's Adelaide's surburban rail was all diesel and seems that continued into the 2000's! I did one trip during my visit to Adelaide in 1972 to Bridgewater if that still exists. Unfortunately the line that Bridgewater is on was converted from broad gauge to standard gauge in 1995, the broad gauge suburban line has been cut back to Belair.

The interior of the electric train is very similar to vlocity, i believe they have the same windows too!

Honestly, the new electric trains reminded me more of the HCMT than anything. The diesels also gave me Sprinter vibes.

I caught a train in 1974 from the beautiful Adelaide railway station to Peterborough where I had to change for a rail motor to Broken Hill. I wish the long distance trains still departed from Adelaide station because it has a great atmosphere or I must say it did before the upgrade. I look forward to your Great Southern review.

I came off the Indian Pacific over a week ago, and your video of the Gold single service cabin was spot on. I was surprised as to how much room there actually was in the cabin. I remembered how you put back the bed and tried it myself remembering your video. Unfortunately I think I caught Covid on the train, now in 7 days Isolation- plenty of time to watch more videos!! As for electrification of the Adelaide suburban lines...it is grossly overdue. While other states have had electrification, ours is behind the times so badly, but at the same time, it is good to see it being done, especially the Gawler line. I have been sick this last couple of weeks but, as soon as I am well, it will be onto the bus to Smithfield railway station and onto the first train that comes along. I missed the official freebie opening, but there will be many more trains to grab. As I said, long overdue.
I think he might know how it is pronounced it’s just his accent.

It is very unlikely that I am ever going to travel on the Gawler line, but I still really enjoyed this.
Untill very recently I didn't even know Adelaide had suburban trains! But wow they look pretty nice on the inside! It's nice to see that Adelaide Metro cares about being more efficient and using this line, however it's a bit sad that the 3000/3100 class trains are being removed slowly from most lines. What is funny is that the 3000 class is a diesel version of an electric train and the acity 4000 class are an electric version of a diesel train. Also maybe there is an opportunity to run the 3000 series to Balaklava from gawler if the line still exists.
Well they did ran to Angaston and Riverton on occasional charters until 2004. Wish they did them again.
I think that Australia’s railways should be electrified to cut down on Co2 emissions. Especially with railway lines in cities that aren’t electrified to be electrified and new and current trains to serve the newly electrified lines.

Just a quick note for anyone interested: this train, while being the first train TO Gawler Central, was by no means the first electric train on the Gawler line, instead it was the second, with the first leaving half an hour earlier FROM Gawler Central, all of the festivities happened for THAT train.

Hilarious they close the line to electrify it. Then we go back to early 20 th century in Melbourne and Sydney and no closed. They worked around the running steam trains. The more we go forward we actually go backwards.
And the early Tait carriages were built to be operated by steam; then retrofitted for electrical operations. The much latter repurposed as vintage train carriages.

If you are interested in our rolling stock have a look at the 2000 class railcars taken out of service in 2015, honestly such individual units they were quite peculiar in design haha!
Are you aware if the sleepers on the Gawler line are built for dual gauge like those on the Seaford line?
This might be relevant if there is the possibility of a standard gauge electrified passenger service to Mount Barker! It could be part of a grander plan to standardise all the electrified lines in Adelaide!

So Adelaides DMUs are based on/similar to Melbourne's electric sets, but their EMUs are similar to/based on Melbourne's diesel sets.
Seems like most rail around Australia is better than nsw lol,just travelled around the UK on train was very decent and pretty punctual.
Gawler was also the terminus of the gawler to peterborough line

Some diesel railcars are upgrading into hybrid technology, apparently
they're quieter with less smell
So these new trains faster then the old ones?
Electric trains accelerate faster than the diesel ones so the total journey time would be improved
