    Corrections/Updates/"Things I should've mentioned":
    - “Nairne Junction” is actually called "Gaol Junction", not "Nairne Junction".
    - The shorter of the bottom two sidings I mention at 4:13 is actually unelectrified and is only used to store track maintenance vehicles. It isn’t used to stable trains. The other 3 sidings however, are used to stable trains.
    - At 8:33 I also forget to mention that it is only possible to access Platforms 1-5 at Adelaide if you’re coming from Platforms 1 and 2 at Mile End (the Seaford Main). However, it is possible to switch over to the Belair tracks using the crossover at Mile End to access platforms 6-9 at Adelaide.
    - Another thing to mention at 7:07 is that trains on the Gawler line only stop at North Adelaide during peak hour. Outside of those times, all trains run express through there.
    If anymore corrections or "things to include" come up. I’ll add them to the list. and is

      Interestingly, I caught a Belair train that ended up being routed into platform 1 at Adelaide just a couple weeks ago. Never seen it before, and this wasn't during peak times... not sure why that happened...
      Also, it's rare to see Outer Harbor trains routed to platform 9, they almost always get platforms 7 and 8, with Grange trains getting platform 9 almost exclusively

    Hi. An absolutely crap station stuck in the 1920's.
    If you work anywhere but the CBD you are a second class passenger.
    For years I had to swap trains in Adelaide to get to Osborne and you would be stuck in the yard (running late) waiting for an empty platform slot.
    The Osborne train was supposed to leave after the Seaford gets in but hardly ever did due to the lack of platforms (there used to be 13).
    This slot would appear as the train you wished to transfer to left Adelaide Station.
    Transfers between trains are not in their mindset. I asked the staff on several occasions and was told that there was no coordination for transfers between lines.
    Sadly, if I tried to make the same early morning journey today, it hasn't changed. Still a totally CBD orientated system.
    More than one train arrives at a time then a sea of people funnelled to one exit.
    Try walking against this flow to get to a train!
    New underground station needed (under King William street) with the southern lines running through to the northern lines.
    Adelaide needs a real modern city station, not a wee, old fashioned country town station.
    Use the building for apartments or something. Get rid of the rail yards for Torrens river parklands.
    Train to Melbourne - get off in the middle of the CBD at Southern Cross Station.
    Come to Adelaide - get of at a crappy platform in the middle of an isolated industrial estate. So unwelcoming.
    Tried to get on the "Rail Board" a couple of times but they only wanted re-enforcement of the status quo - happy CBD travellers, not dissenting opinions.
    Tried to contact a Transport Minister or put in formal complaints.
    Either no answer or the "of well, that's the way it is" answer.
    No vision for public transport by any SA government. Sad.

    Just FYI about the Gaol loop, although the broad gauge connection was removed about 10 years prior due to electrification works on the Seaford Line, technically, the broad gauge Gaol loop still exists as they’ve left a section of track and sleepers and rails in place between Mile End and the north end of the Gaol loop. Apparently I personally don’t think anyone was that bothered enough to fully remove the broad gauge track for good because it’s still there, more than 10 years since it was cut

    • @tekkies-transport
      @tekkies-transport  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know. I saw it when I was in Adelaide getting footage for the video. You can see it during one of the clips where I show footage of the Ghan coming around the loop. That's why I said the broad gauge track was "abandoned". It's unlikely it'll be reinstated (as there is no reason to now that the only broad gauge traffic in South Australia is suburban trains), so there's no reason not to rip it up. They could theoretically use it to duplicate the Gaol loop by converting that track to standard gauge...

  • @RNA0ROGER

    I'd say your video is pretty good, mostly accurate and I dare say Adelaide Station is in need of a deadly serious amount of redevelopment including a restoration of platforms.

    • @tekkies-transport
      @tekkies-transport  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Something they should definitely do is reinstate some platforms, and provide standard gauge access (either through dual gauge, or by adding some dedicated standard gauge platforms), that way interstate trains can return to Adelaide Station. It's quite annoying that interstate trains depart from Keswick (Adelaide Parklands Terminal), as it's not easy to get to the centre of Adelaide from there.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Just out of interest, I'm led to believe that the South lines (Belair, Seaford etc) are called Main South and Main / South Suburban.
    Prior to electrification, the Belair Line was the Main South Line, with the Noarlunga (now Seaford) and Tinsley (now Flinders) known as Main Suburban or South Suburban.
    They still used the same platforms at Adelaide however Belair trains tended to use Platforms 1 and 2 more exclusively.
    When the Noarlunga Line was extended to Seaford and the Goodwood Underpass was constructed, the two lines were swapped over - Belair became the Suburban Line, and Seaford became the Main South. This also included the platforms used by the lines being swapped around, although it's worth pointing out that all the Seaford, Tonsley / Flinders and Belair Line platforms at Adelaide were electrified, and the Belair Line for some reason is electrified as far as Showgrounds or just before.

    • @mitchellheard8981
      @mitchellheard8981 หลายเดือนก่อน

    1:07 the "train departures" and "ask the man in blue" structure and display image puzzles me.
    It looks a bit different from what I remember from the late 1950s to 1970s. It has a lot of regional pax trains... I don't remember that many being shown, but maybe because I wasn't looking for them.
    The bit that does get me... is where is the grange line display? The grange, then henley, then cut back to grange line is a very old but still operating line. On off peak times it was often a subset of the semaphore/ outer harbor line... bit it's not up there at all!
    Great work.

      That image is an Adelaide Station departure board, which was on display at the National Rail Museum in Port Adelaide. I don’t know what year it’s from tho (pre-1970s probably). I never noticed that the Grange Line wasn’t on there. I’d say the reason is that Grange/Henley Beach might have just operated as a shuttle from Woodville at that time, which is why it might not have been showing on there. Bizzarre…

    Bro literally yesterday I was thinking about someone doing this type of video!!!
    I do have a few possible corrections and additions to add:
    - 8:28 You could also mention platforms 1&2 at Mile End can only access platforms 1-5
    - The platform staggering is backwards (platform 1 is longest while 8 is shortest - 9 is slightly longer)
    - the shorter of the bottom sidings isn't electrified and is only used for maintenance vehicles
    besides that it was good 👍

    • @tekkies-transport
      @tekkies-transport  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you enjoyed the video.
      First of all, I didn’t know the bottom siding was only used to stow maintenance vehicles.
      Secondly, whilst the Seaford Main lines can only access platforms 1-5. There is a crossover at Mile End, allowing Seaford trains to run on the Belair lines, which have access to the big crossovers at Nairne Junction. So it is technically possible to access the rest of the platforms from the Seaford line, but you just need to switch over to the Belair tracks to do it.
      Glad you enjoyed!

      @mitchellheard8981 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's not to scale. The platforms are actually quite long. Platform 1 is definitely shorter than the rest, though.
      Adelaide also very rarely runs trains longer than 3-4 cars. I think the football trains on the Seaford and Gawler lines will have one or two six-car trains (2x 3 car sets) but most of the time, lines like Belair, Outer Harbour and Grange will run 2-car trains.

    Will Adelaide Metro ever fully electrify its heavy rail fleet? At this rate, it probably won't be done for another 30-odd years. Those 3000 and 3100 DMU's shouldn't have anymore than two decades left in them.

    • @tekkies-transport
      @tekkies-transport  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Id say less. To put it in perspective. Melbourne’s Comeng fleet started entering service in the early 1980s, which is about half a decade before the 3000 and 3100 class hit the rails in Adelaide. We are in the process of retiring the Comengs AT THE MOMENT. So by that estimation, you need to either find a replacement for the 3000 and 3100s to see out the next 10-30 years, or get on with electrification. So yeah you’ll need to get on with that before those railcars reach the end of their lives…

      Then after the system has extended to Aldinga, Tanunda, and Mount Barker, a second line could bring services out to Virginia, Two Wells, and Mallala. All these long term projects will greatly help with traffic flow and affordable housing.
