What do I think about the blue shell? I entered a Mario Kart 8 tournament at the local library back around 2014-2015 when the game had just come out. It ended up being me and some girl in the final race, with the computers set to easy. I was using my boy Shy Guy and the course was Sunshine Airport. I was in first from the get-go, and I kept on widening my lead as the race went on. Then, on the final lap, she got a blue shell and then a triple red shell back to back, and I lost. That blue shell cost me the $20 Gamestop gift card, and I can only imagine how different my life would have been with that sweet, sweet GameStop cash. I will forever despise the blue shell for that moment.

The issue I have with the blue shell is that it doesn't really do anything for the person who throws it. Sure, it can hit a few people on its way to the front, but pretty much any of the other "power items" will be much more helpful when you're so far behind.
You can save it though for when you are in third or fourth, right?

Blue shell is a great idea. People in the pack have to deal with everyone else. The person in first wouldn't have much to worry about if it wasn't for the blue shell.
Yeah the developers said they made blue shells fly low to hit people in its path to make it more fair for 1st

Same with the coin. If u were in first and always got bananas and shells u would almost nvr get out of first unless u got hit by 2 red shells or somethin. So getting a coin makes it fair at least in my opinion.
Shouldn't be as common. Like instead of coming up once or twice a race it should be once every 2 or 3 races
Make the blue shell hit the top three. Guy in tenth throws that shell, all it does is let second close on first. Does next to nothing for anyone else.

Fun fact Ryu... You know the cheese holes in that one map? You can jump off the edges of the hole to get a boost. Same with the waves on the classic Rainbow road and the Ribbon road one(prob missing other ones too)

and on the blue shell, the equivalence in CTR hits every player in front of the user (when powered up) so maybe that would be slightly more balanced ?

I wasn't a big fan of the second channel at first, but after watching some videos, I realized this is where the Ryukahr I remembered from back in the day lives! Loving the content!
I personally am not a fan of the blue shell because the people who get them are far from first. It more practically helps those in 2nd or 3rd place, not really the person who throws it. Also, it often happens towards the end of the race and clears any gains earned by the first-place rider by legitimate skill and strategy. A player who executes perfectly can still lose which doesn't feel right, especially since the benefactor isn't even the one deploying the blue shell.
The blue shell isn´t a good idea in my opinion.
Ben vs Ryu was a great example.
First match there was no blue shell and so it was all about skill. Ryu won by playing well.
Second match Ryu was in front and only lost to Ben by the blue shell.
So basically someone from the farthest backline decides that Ryu gets in second.
I think the blue shell should be replaced by something that helps someone in the backline get back to the middle
I love the mario kart! I thumbs up every video I finish watching. not only does it help the creators but it helps me know if I've already seen a video later on.
I don't mind the blue shells. ...anymore. That's because the frequency at which random items decide the results almost entirely by themselves has turned me away from this lottery on wheels. It's the same as how I don't care how awful Chicken McNuggets are because I don't eat at McDonalds anymore.
With that said, Ryu, you're clearly wasting your skill when playing Mariokart. How about playing some actual skill-based racing sims where your abilities can truly shine and you don't have to pray for blue shells to hit your opponent or get gimped by coins in boxes despite being a highly skilled player?
Having 10 coins adds 20cc to your top speed
So you go 170cc in 150cc, 220cc in 200cc when you have 10 coin it makes a huge difference

My #1 tip for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is to try to have 10 coins for as much of the race u can it makes a huge difference in speed and finishing races in a shorter time(winning)

problem with blue shell is it helps second place way more than 3rd and worse. so it doesn't really help bad players and just punishes good players, benefitting good but not great players the most. something more balanced would be preferable. or only have blue shells in first two laps and somehow target top players is they are way out in front; something to cluster the players back together without being so arbitrarily punishing to first place.
Blue Shell is both good and bad. Bad because it punishes skill or at least those lucky (unlucky) enough to be in front at the time. Rage-inducing in this respect. Good because it is an equalizer of sorts and this is a chaotic party game where RNG mixes it up at any time. That's a large part of the appeal, like Nintendo's new golf game. Nintendo multiplayer games trend toward silliness that is difficult to take seriously... Smash Bros being a notable exception.

I think that being locked into 3 course does actually make sense because otherwise there'd be courses that you were playing all the time and other courses that never came up

Mario Kart 9 should definitely have a competitive mode, requiring a certain rank before you can participate.

They don't let you pick any map, since if they did people would only vote for their favourite tracks (the popular maps), and as a result the less popular ones would rarely if ever get picked.

Here are some tips and bits of useful information. I don't know if you would consider this as a spoiler so I will let you decide if you read this comment or not. Knowledge can't be unlearned.
I put in roughly 350 hours. My VR score was around the 12k-18k range. I think the limit is either 49,999 or 99,999 I don't remember which.
Higher VR players when against lower VR players gain less points for wins and loss more points for loses so they don't tend to stick around those lobbies for long they usually leave those lobbies and try to get into a lobby with players with similar VR
Personally I don't like getting hit by blue shells. I am a somewhat competitive player and I tend to be in first a lot. Getting hit by a blue shell is never fun. That being said I do think it should be in the game. Mario Kart is a racing game with items. The blue shell is just another item. Those in first don't like it because they get the negative impact of it so their opinions on it might be a little biased. But I understand it's importance in the game as a whole or trying to see it from the perspective of all players as a whole.
What items a player gets is determined by their distance away from the player in first place. So if it's a tight race and everyone is close together the chance of items like blue shells and lightning are lower and if everyone is spread far apart the chances increase for those items.
you can't get double coin items so it's best to hang onto your coins until after you get a 2nd item. Using your coins right before an item box is just asking to receive more coins.
If you want more competitive play, tournaments is the place to go. There are some options available when creating tournaments you can choose the CC and what type of items players will get. I think you can even remove items altogether.
If you didn’t know the music box item can stop a blue shell if you use it when it’s about to hit you!
Blue shell is the main reason I have zero interest in playing Mario Kart games anymore. It isn't even an equalizer, it's a spite mechanic. You'll never get it unless you're doing so poorly that you won't benefit from it.
That said, I think the carving to go straight and somehow be faster stuff is dumb, too. Mario Karts just went in a direction I don't want to go.

The thing I hate most about blue shells is that they come to players farther back and hitting the first player doesn’t help them at all it only hurts the player in first.

I LOVE the blue shell. But...well...I'm sooooo bad at Mario Cart. So I'm happy that there is at least a little way for bad players to take revenge against the good players. :-P
its the same problem in grip combat racing where due to the blueshell first just gets away if there is not one because of the fighting in the back. its good that there are ways to cope with it.....but its still a problem (youtube keeps deleting my comments for some reason i think)
if you would like to stray from nintendo, another game like mariokart is grip combat racing. it has a small community but its allot of fun.

I don't think we need a competitive Mario Kart. Smash Bros fills the niche of "silly party game with optional competitive mode" easily. Mario Kart doesn't need competitive. I prefer it to have the great unfair equalizers that keep everyone on the same level. It's more fun that way, in my opinion.

I say, get rid of the horn, Crazy8 and coin.
And make the blue shell only obtainable in 10,11&12th place with lower chances.
