As someone who is in an open relationship, maybe I can shed some light on it? I've been with my partner for over 13 years, and there are some things I'm really into that they will never touch with a ten foot pole, so we had the agreement that so I could feel fulfilled, I could seek that from another person. I'm able to express that need of mine without having to compromise my relationship with the love of my life, and honestly our relationship only deepened after we allowed ourselves that.
I will agree with you that her dismissal of his concerns and needs with needing to be the first on something rubbed me the wrong way. If my partner ever brought up something like that I would find a compromise, or something because my relationship with them is the most important.
