IRON SHAFT FLEX TEST | Does Iron Shaft Flex Matter?

  • Iron Shaft Flex is one of the most important components in any golf iron fitting. While the fitters at 2nd Swing Golf will prioritize the clubhead in a club fitting, the next component is identifying the right shaft. This means that in a golf iron fitting, making sure you play the right iron shaft flex is essential to hitting good iron shots.
In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and Kevin Kraft conduct an iron shaft flex test using the same clubhead and same shaft model, but in different shaft flexes.

I was surprised myself when I was given a set of irons with KBS tour lite S compared to my set with X100s. I had in my mind I was going to need to reshaft the set to something heavy 120-130 grams in X. In fact the new set makes me swing with a better tempo and what I feel is nice and easy. This has actually made my par 3 game better and not going after it makes my misses a lot more playable.

It would be interesting to see this again with his actually club. Would he still get better results with a regular flex? Also is it an ego thing that he couldnt just admit that the regular flex might suit him better? 🤔

Would you consider doing a video on the importance of shaft weight? I think there is a lot to explore there insofar as today shaft weight differs from driver to fairway woods to hybrids to irons. Should there be weight parameters such that if your driver shaft is 55g then your iron shafts should not exceed a certain weight? I am looking to reshaft my irons from stiff to regular and the weight options go from 55g to 130g. How would someone determine the proper shaft weight? Great video, thank you.

Flex matters but IMO not as much as shaft weight. Kevin got it right straight out of the gate, he plays the flex that feels better in his hands

I was using this shaft reg,but then found the 45gm and 35gm shafts. Wow, the 35gm felt amazing and surprised my pro, that the numbers were so much better

If you watch the longest hitters in golf, in slow motion their clubhead is forward in the flex at impact not lagging behind.

My takeaway is you can’t pick the flex of a shaft based off of club-head speed. He was consistently 87 mph and yet he hit the regular flex the best. He had the highest smash factor and tightest dispersion with regular flex.
He said he plays extra stiff in his irons based more off feel which is Interesting. Different manufactures have different tolerances and obviously different levels of stiffness, since there’s no industry standard.
I average 80 to 81 mph with my 7 iron and I’m in a regular flex graphite Tensei AMT (red) in T100S irons. Love how they feel and need graphite since they’re easier on the joints.

I assume these are also 1/2” long if they’re stock Alta CB shafts.
I have the i230s with Alta CB stiff, but eventually I cut shafts down 1/2” to play more like std length. I didn’t mess with swing weight and didn’t notice much change in that regard
I gotta say and you can see it in the video: distance control is legit. If you hit it relatively well it is so consistent!

Where is the x stiff results? If higher lofted clubs (8 - GW) in the iron set usually swing slower, would an x stiff hurt or help? Would wedges need x stiff?

Helpful video - can you share your thoughts on which type of shafts works best for a player dealing with wrist injury? Should I use 100% graphite or Aerofiber shaft?

This as it stands is confusing AF. It runs counter to what every fitter says. Deleting multiple stiff shaft shots, stiff a crap dispersion compared to the regular.
I guess playing with weight might change things, but this smacks of the old I only play S or X that "Joe Punter" gets ribbed about

I built clubs for many years and much of what even modern so called fitters preach is garbage from the days before we had good evaluation tools like trackman and flightscope etc... Once those came along we found out that much of what we thought was good advice was an educated guess at best and a lot of ego feeding in general. The best advice anyone can give you is to go to a place where you can access launch monitors and find someone who allows you the time to truly evaluate a variety of clubs and shafts. So many of these places these days want to rush you through and use general advice to do so effectively negating the power of the tools they have at hand. They don't want to be there an want to get back to their phone as soon as possible. I have the advantage of knowing my own specs and desires better than any fitter ever will so I can tell immediately tell when someone knows their stuff or not. But generally speaking if you feel rushed or pushed they aren't worth dealing with.
