Ever since its release at Christmas 1996, Mario Kart 64 has been one of the most popular games on the Nintendo 64. With its large variety of strange and entertaining courses and items, this sequel to Super Mario Kart offers hours of singleplayer and multiplayer fun. Due to programmer laziness, the PAL version displays all the frames of the NTSC version, making the game run about 5/6th the speed. This results in an equivalent run having a higher time in PAL. At this past Awesome Games Done Quick, $1,025,000 was raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. It only took a week of continuous streaming, 18,000 donors, and many many runners to achieve. Man, the rubber-banding in this game is ridiculous. Even in the non-shortcut levels, he's racing phenomenally yet they're still always right there behind him.
Same with all mario games on 64 and gamecube. It's fucking annoying
Always hated that about these games. NPCs always right on your ass.
What pisses me off the most in Mario Kart Wii is whenever i'm like 2 seconds away from the finish line while in 1st place, a blue shell comes flying out of nowhere and then it sends me flying, letting the other racers finish while i'm still recovering 2 feet away from the finish line. -_-

Brayton Hackbarth I definitely understand the rubber banding effect, but it's *extreme* here. He's practically skipped half the track in some instances, and they are _still_ riding his ass. O_O
that's a thing i really didn't like in mario kart, because it was such an obvious "balancing" effect, that i noticed it even as a kid. It's just a cheap mechanic to compensate for the bad AI.
Aryan Dastan It's not really cheating. With rubber banding, there is no need to play as best as you can, since you're only making it harder for yourself. Simply stay in front, keep some red shells and you win.
The moral of the story is that if you are amazing at Mario Kart, you will be punished endlessly.

I'm going to sound old here, but my favorite was the SNES version - I don't think it's just nostalgia. I remember winning being less about which random items you and your opponents got, and more about the actual driving ( although none of the series was all about the driving! :) ).

I have Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed on my Wii U. It's out on a bunch of consoles. It feels like Diddy Kong racing with a Sega twist. It's very fun and focuses more on skill and much less RNG from what it seems like. Don't get me wrong I love Mario Kart it's amazing. But give that game a chance. It's not just a rip off. It's fun!

Plus I know goldeneye is not on the conputer, but I can still play it on an emulator, as well as my limited edition N64 that I take very good care of. Also their is more than one way to cheat a game, I speed run Goldeneye on the console btw and use various glitches to "Cheat" the game and get the best time rather than using actual Cheats.

Pika250 I've actually been playing Mario Kart 8 recently and yeah, it definantly gone. But one thing I've noticed is that if I'm far ahead of everyone else in a race they all seem to get good items like triple mushrooms and Pirahna Plants so that they can catch up to me. Even people in 2nd were getting golden mushrooms. I guess that is the replacement for rubber banding.

When you do the Rainbow Road jump is there any tips to when to jump or do you just turn in and hope for the best? I feel I'm typically 1 for 5 on that jump.
You have to do the jump just before you hit the downhill section or you will overshoot and if you do it before undershoot. Then there is the possibility of thumping off right as you land.

A lot of them are actually officially sanctioned and covered in the official Nintendo Power Mario Kart 64 Player's Guide. Others are actually more natural to find if you play enough. Eventually you just get a feel for the game, and are able to guesstimate what jump might work where. This exact run actually isn't all that good. I played MK64 a lot when I was a kid, and I vividly remember getting better lap and track times than they do here, despite not really considering myself a speed runner or pro gamer in any sense.
Though I wasn't as consistent from run to run.

+Clovis senpai yeah, but compared to f-zero (especially f-zero X i would say) its a joke! in fzero X on master difficulty, its like your enemies have infinite boost (even if you boost constantly, using up all your energy, they always catch up), there are like 3/29 enemies trying to win the race and the other 26 are just there to fucking murder YOU specifically! x/

I knew about the wario stadium first hill jump, but did not know about the return jump.
Did not know about the Royal Raceway warp to boost, but did the boost to finish line one.
I'm also fairly certain, on rainbow road, that you can do the shell glitch without the shell if you jump just right.
I'm so going to abuse some of these glitches when I collab with a subscriber on this one day mwuhahahaha.

Think of a rubber band. The more you stretch it, the more it pulls in the other direction.
In a racing game, rubber banding means the farther ahead you get of your opponents, the faster the COMs will go to try to catch up to you.
