I grew up watching my mom"can" things all the time. We had a pear orchard. So we ate a lot of pear jam, pear preserves, pear syrup, pear chutney. I loved it. I enjoy watching your canning videos.
My Grandmother canned everything, she taught me so much. She made her own ketchup. It was very good. She also made root beer, grape juice, jelly, so many things. She had a family of 8 and they grew everything.

Good morning. 💕 Every video I see of you amazes me. How much you do for your family is so inspiring. Your work ethic is something most people don’t have or can’t even comprehend. You remind me of my mother. She worked so hard in the home. Very little resting time. As a senior adult now, I know how my body feels and I know my mother had a lot of pain in her body like I do, and the fact that she still did all that she did, well, there are no words for the admiration I have for her. I remember her cooking big beautiful meals for everyone and then not eating anything, and she would say she wasn’t hungry right then , 🥺. I know now that she was just too tired or hurting too much to eat, because that’s exactly how I feel now. I wish I could have understood her more when she was alive. She never complained though. I think having a purpose of caring for others gave her joy. I know it does me. Have a blessed weekend!❤🙏
My mom was a lot like yours. I believe she lived so long because she had a purpose and a need to keep moving.. if she'd sat in a rocking chair, she wouldn't have been here
I also grew up with venison as my parents could not afford to buy much meat and we had to go far with ferry and bus to reach the butchers. We were not farmers, but our uncle who owned the grounds saw to it that we had meat. The first time two guys came and dropped a whole deer on mums kitchen counter, she was quite wild eyed, she told me. But the guys were kind and came back and cut the deer a bit apart for her, and then she had a really good old fashioned cookbook to help her. This was in Norway in the 60ties. I enjoy most of your videos, thank you! One thing I cannot understand is using so much sugar in the food
Salt and Sugar were both used as a means of preserving foods. Also, sugar cuts the acidity of the tomato and vinegar. That being said... adjust seasonings to your taste... maybe use 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, or 3/4... just make it to your own specific tastes.
This is the same recipe I use. My mom was a lunch lady for our local school here in Utah when I was young and she got the recipe from there. The only difference is I only use brown sugar, not both. My family loves it. And everyone who I have made it for has loved it. I haven’t canned it yet but it is on my list of things to can.
Your channel is sooooo very encouraging Ruthann 😊. You talk just as if I was visiting with you. Also, I love that you have no airs and grace about it. You are such a good mommy. It's hard work being at home, and doing ALL that you do. I found your cookbook. Can't wait to receive it. Like I need another one. Lol. Blessings from Alabama.
My husband's grandmother ran a coffee shop near Estes Park, CO. And I make her recipe for sloppy joe's - this very weekend in fact - and she puts a pinch of cloves in her recipe called it St Vrain's Special. Try the cloves, do not overdo it as it is a strong spice, but it just adds something to sloppy joes.
I just canned my second batch of these sloppy joes. I did pints the first time and quarts today. I cut the recipe in half both times. These sloppy joes are delicious, so much better than manwich or anything similar. Thanks for sharing!!!
My husband &I started our first real gardening at 69 years old which was last year, (he is 5 years older than me.) We are staying in better shape now than we've ever been and eating so much healthier & feeling so much better too. It's a very gratifying experience and so worth it. Everyone should grow at least some of their own food. Loving life so much more now.
Your children bless me, their life skills are so far ahead for their age, simply because Mom took advantage of training at such a young age. Even now I see the confidence they have and the enjoyment in their work. Canning meat and starter meals or meals is such a great job well done. 😊
I so wish I had “met” you sooner!! But I’m so blessed to “know” you now! Thank you for sharing all of you with us!! It is amazing how much I have learned from you! And I’m so glad you also love Jesus! Thank you so much for just being you and sharing with us! Hugs and love…🙏🏼🙌🏻💙
Thank you for the advice for decreasing the temperature slowly when using a Camp Chef burner. I canned your baked beans recipe this past week and had a good bit of siphoning. Now I know how to better keep that from happening in the future. Love your videos and recipes.
Another fantastic teaching video. Thank you so much. Your family is so blessed to have you as their mom. Not to mention how blessed your husband is …she is more precious than rubies. Being a professional all my days until retirement, I am just now learning these skills. I’m very grateful to God to have these days, to be able to learn .
Really enjoy your videos. I am elderly now but still am up to new ways, advise, and recipes. Your canning room reminded me very much that f ours when we were able to garden. We live over by Maquoketa, , Dubuque, and Davenport. Happy to see we are all from Iowa. God bless!!! 🌺
The level of energy when four kids get home from school is wonderful!! Thanks for this great video and sharing your family. As I watch and listen to you cook, work, videotape and manage active children, I am reminded of what you said in one video when training a cow to be milked- “ This is not my first rodeo”. LOL. God bless!
I love and appreciate that your video opening tells us where you are located and you introduce yourself. I wish all TH-camrs did that. I love that so much of your everyday activities become teaching experiences for your children. Kudos to you and Elvin!
I just love watching and hearing the boys when helping you or just whatever they're doing! They're all boy for sure. I think I enjoy that as much as I do your content! It's real life.
Thanks RuthAnn! I'll chime in and say we moved to our little farm/homestead three years ago. At the ages of 55 & almost 56, we have our first milk cow due middle of next month (her first with us & I've never milked a cow!), a steer, a bunch of turkeys & chickens, I've learned how to pressure can and be confident with it, and I've even learned some parenting skills to use with my 7 grandkids. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach me! I have some physical limitations, as does hubby, so our garden next year will have to made into raised beds. (I had a heart attack this year planting potatoes! ) We're learning to put in infrastructure for the farm, garden, animals, etc. to make life easier as we age, but I've been building up our larder and I would've had little knowledge on how to do that without you, thank you!
Goodness! I haven't canned in years! i lost my confidence when my jars were not sealing but I didn't know it and lost a lot of my peaches. videos have so inspired me I threw away all my notes of other people's videos and am going to watch yours. You are so gifted in teaching,...even this 70 yr old woman!!! I love your home , especially your kitchen. Also your patio where you are working. I especially love how you have lovingly trained your children to work...and even enjoy what they are doing. I will be back!!! I am making a list of the things I want to can. The sloppy Joes especially . Its just my husband and I at home now, have 5 acres, a big pond where we can fish and last year built a nice pavilion to entertain. I know God has called us to have people over and ;my husband and I are both good at it. But the food part I am not as confident with anymore. These videos will inspire me!! Already are! I'm heading to town to lap swim at the school bc my back is a mess from canning apples for 2 weeks! But I am also going after more apples!! Thank you so much for all you do and especially for your sweet personality!!.
This video made me so happy. My family immigrated to Iowa in the 1800s, and much of our family still lives there. I'm in NC now because of the military, but seeing simple things like using wash basins and wash cloths brings me right back to grandma's. As I watched you add the ingredients, when you were about done I said to myself, "Aww, no mustard!" ... then it was like you read my mind and pulled it out. It's almost our family's recipe to a "T" but in a smaller quantity. I hope to be able to afford a pressure canner soon so I can preserve stuff like this. Love your channel... new subscriber!
Thank you, Ruthann. I appreciate your clear explanations and helpful tips! Looking forward to a day of canning today. Trying to empty my freezer as well.
Back when my 6 children were all home, we ran the dishwasher at least twice and sometimes 3x a day and the best decision we made was to get the extended warranty on it and even added on to that when it expired. I know we went through at least 3 motors in that thing. The repair men all told me that the motor itself was $400, and with the extended warranty, it didn't cost us a thing. So, the $ for the extended warranty was definitely worth it for us. I didn't get a dishwasher until I had all 6 children and I felt so liberated from the kitchen.
I love my meat chopper that I bought from my friend that sells Pampered Chef products!!! I enjoy all your canning projects, even though now that I am in my 60's I don't can anymore as we eat a lot freshly made. I do freeze if I have extra!!!
Ruthann, you’re costing me! So far I have a 22 quart roaster, making sure it goes down to 150!, and I’m shopping for an All American canner on eBay! (I’m using my electric canner which is great but I’m looking ahead to the trib so I want to do more at a time and I’m going to use my camp stove so it doesn’t take so long!) I’ve canned broth and today I’m working on dry packed potatoes. Thank you so much for your inspiration. 😁😘
I also watch you while I have my morning coffee. I have two grown kids and didn't do much canning when they were growing up. But I am enjoying more each year. I have learned so much from you. I especially love my canned green beans. I added the zinc, and they are beautiful.
I’m so glad I found your channel a while ago. I’m much older and wish I had this information when I was way younger. I grew up a city girl and found this prepping/self sustainable lifestyle in my late 50’s. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! 😂 Thank you for sharing your family, lifestyle and your Godly heart❤.
My Mom's sloppy Joe "recipe" uses less brown sugar, no white sugar and no vinegar. It also adds some yellow mustard. I don't think it was ever written down, but my daughter makes it for her family. Ahh, hand me downs!
I’ve tried several of your recipes and they have never disappointed. Your hamburger bun recipe is now in my regular rotation. I can’t wait to try the sloppy joes. (I’ll bet it is good to be delicious on those buns.)
I first saw that chopper on This Alaska Life. Lauren made it look so easy and actually fun to use. I ordered one immediately! I enjoy using this tool! My son and SILove really like to cook. I gifted both of them this tool for Christmas! I am so happy you are using it! Great video! I love your enthusiasm as you make/preserve food for your family!
I saw that tool in the 1950s when I was a toddler. Its been around a while but went out of fashion. I still have my moms from way back. If it works, I keep it.
Loved this video. I am so impressed with your parenting. You are so patient and loving. I am 70 & learning a lot from you. You are making so many memories with those children. My tip: high speed blender up lemons- skin and all. I take off the ends, take out seeds and some white stuff....blend it all up, and freeze in ice cube trays. It is so handy for lemon bars, pies, and whatever you need. It's stronger but so natural and yummy. I don't strain it, we like the pulp. I thought maybe you might like it too. You inspired me to make cheese! It turned out great.
Thank you for explaining again how to avoid siphoning when using the pressure canner!!! I was just thinking I wanted to ask you that specific question!!!
I live in the EU and a pressure canner is not in the culture, so I bought one from the US: cost a lot, but I LOVE the meat canning and all the rest. Never canned before, so I'm thrilled to know what recipes you can prepare with them as they tast differently. THNX Ruthann, you always made my day and let me smile with all your content, much love and blessings for you and your family from Hungary xoxoxo
@jacquelinesmit876 I live in Belgium and have been looking to buy an AllAmerican pressure cooker as well. Can you tell me where to get one and how I have to proceed to get it across customs?
@isabellekeijzer, I am in The Netherlands, I ordered a Presto pressure canner through Amazon. It took three weeks, but arrived in one piece and very pleased with it
I love your videos, especially your canning videos. I also appreciate that you share the printable recipes. Your family is amazing and your interactions with them is precious. You and your husband are truly blessed.
I absolutely love your canning methods. You simplify so much pertaining to canning. I love the way you get to the point and everything that you talk about is relevant. I started canning 4 years ago when my sister passed, since canning has become my passion. You are such an awesome teacher! I know because I’m a retired teacher. Your knowledge is so vast. Thank you for teaching me❣️
Good morning, RuthAnn and family. My the mixture of Sloppy Joe's sure does look yummy.. made me so hungry for a good Ole sloppy joe sandwich. Love a good canning recipe. Thanks so much. Enjoy rest of the weekend and next week.
Thank you so much, Ruthann! I am new to homesteading, and your canning/gardening tips have been such a huge blessing! This year, I have canned so much for the first time that we had to add in new shelves in our kitchen pantry and even added jars to our spare room closet. I am learning new skills and will be able to pass them along to my children. Thank you for your gentle and meek spirit in all of your videos while overflowing with knowledge and grace. May God bless you and your family. ❤
Hi RuthAnn and sweet family! Sloppy Joe’s and taco meat is on my canning list. I’m just running behind this year because I have been helping my brother. Your children are such good helpers. I hope everyone has a very blessed weekend!
You're amazing at these videos.! So enjoyable in the morning with breakfast.! I've learned so much from your content in regards to canning (I'm new at it, 47 years old).. I've already used your granola recipe (absolutely amazing.!) and have since canned 13 qts of apple pie filling and 6 qts of applesauce.. My next venture will be pumpkin puree for pumpkin pie/roll/and spiced lattes (my daughter loves them for fall season).. This canning of sloppy joes will be amazing for clearing out room with last year's cow for this year's cow, and allow me to clear out last year's venison stash.. Absolutely love the channel.! Keep it going please.!! It slows life down for everybody (me, atleast) in this chaotic fast paced world..
Your recipe and mine are the same except i put chopped green bell pepper in mine. My husband absolutely loves it. I dont have 3 little boys to help as all .y children are grown, but my husband is my man child and he is a great helper. He loves canning day as he is great chopping, stirring, and eashing jars etc. We both are in our early 70's and love staying busy. Watching your videos has got me canning more and doing lots of things i had put off. I just made 4 pr. of curtains and decluttered 2 closets. My husband asked what got me going I laughed and told him Ruth Ann then we watched one of your videos. God bless and keep up the good work ❤❤❤
This video gave me so much joy! For the Glory of God!! I got vision of life for my family and my children. Praise the Lord. I have heard older people that lived on the farm talk about this type of life style. Ohh what wonderful living testimony of family life!!
I’m so excited to try this I’ve never canned sloppy Joe meat. My family loves sloppy Joe’s. Hey I’m 65 and still learning!👍thank you so much for your teaching. Lady you have a wonderful family.🙏🏻
Good morning RuthAnn, I just harvested my onions and put them in my cold room to dry. I’m thankful you explained the process of why to dry onions the way you do. You saved an onion crop 🥰 I appreciate you and you sharing your knowledge. God bless you.!
Oh goody!! Another "meal in a jar" for me to add for this coming year! Last year I started collecting those recipes, hoping to continue my goal of us eating out less often, having easy meals ready to go to stave off that temptation. You are such a treasure of wisdom. I'm looking forward to my next canning session and hopefully have less problem with boiling over and seepage. Blessings, Marie
Thanks Ruthann! I opened the recipe, and took a screen shot. This sounds amazing. ps, my husband liked the Cole slaw(pepper cabbage) also. I will be canning more of that too!❤MANY BLESSINGS for your family!!
I was just about to ask how to use this product lol. I have a lot of bear meat taking up freezer space, and this may be the answer! Also, I wanted to mention that onion scrap fertilizer works wonders. Soak onion scraps in water for a day or two, strain and water the garden. Thank you for another great video, I love spending time with all of you. 🥰
I always enjoy my Saturday morning coffee while watching your new video! Thank you for the pressure canning tips... I got a pressure canner three years ago and have never used it (a little afraid actually). I'm going to learn with canning potatoes this month. I said, I wish I knew someone that could help me learn! Thank you so much for being that person! 😊💕
@@Lori.. I used to be scared, and leave the room, when the weight started juggling, cause I was afraid the top would blow, but I realized it has 2backups to release pressure, so I got more comfortable with it 😊
Another great informative teaching video Ruthanne! I always learn something valuable from you. Thank you for passing your incredible knowledge to those of us who didn’t have parents who could teach it to us. What a gift you are. God bless you and your family.
To save freezer space, apple cider can be water bathed. It's a 20-minute water bath. Some people use half a teaspoon of lemon juice per jar to retain the color, but it is not needed.
I can by myself. I couldn't do it without a dishwasher. I've been through 3 dishwashers in my married life. I've found that my Maytag is one of the best. I measured my deepest canning utensil before buying this last one. I made sure that pot would fit. It has a 1 hour cycle and a sanitize cycle. I run it as many as I need during the day. Next to my Kitchen Aid mixer, it is the most used appliance in my kitchen.
They have that fabulous meat chopper at all of the Dollar Trees. It’s my favorite kitchen tool! Love to you! You bring so much joy and wisdom to us all.❤
My granddaughter had one of those meat choppers. I have always used a potato masher. So does my son. I saw that chopper in a store very recently. I bought 2 and sent one to my son and his wife. I bet they like it better than the masher!
You are such an amazing human, what a special gift you are to so many of us! I’m thankful to have you as a resource even though I’m in Oregon on the West Coast ❤
I love your outdoor kitchen area. It's such a necessity for summer canning. Years ago my mom would can from the garden in the hottest part of the summer inside with no air conditioning. It was very uncomfortable. Love your show.
Your sloppy Joe mix looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing all you do. I have been canning about 2 years and have not canned as much as I want but watching you just inspires me to do more. 💖
Hi Ruthann , you are so impressive, all of your skills, your parents done a great job of raising you, and I’m thankful you teach your children, this lifestyle ❤️
I grew up calling them Sloppy-Joes and yours look delicious, I can’t wait to try the recipe! Also, thank you for introducing me to that food chopper you used for onions in this video - it’s one of my favorite tools in the kitchen and what a time-saver!! Also, just wanted to let you know that I’m thankful your videos are full of practical tips and instructions and even though you are too young to be my mom, you fill a gap I’ve been missing since she went to be with Jesus.❤
Thank you. I also gave up on dishwashers 3 years ago. They firstly weren't cleaning things well or rinsing dishes well and I can't stand a filmy dish so I am the new dishwasher and sometimes it is tiring but I know things are really clean. Sloppy Joe looks so good I will have to make some. Great video!
Another great Saturday! BBQ beef is delicious but I have never canned it. I need to set goals for what products I need to learn more about in canning😁. Good to see your helpers😁

@@BA-ic9uhseriously? I have never heard that about nicotine patches. I will have to get some cheapo patches. I used to smoke and I did wear patches for awhile but that was 6 years ago so I don't have any more of them.
Please get ivermectin in you - life changing
Good morning. 💕
Every video I see of you amazes me.
I believe she lived so long because she had a purpose and a need to keep moving.. if she'd sat in a rocking chair, she wouldn't have been here
You have become my favorite channel! I learned so much from you. Thank you. You are incredibly hard working! Guten tag.
Enjoying my morning coffee while I watch you & your beautiful family. The little boys are so adorable when helping. Thank you
Me too! Drinking my coffee and watching RuthAnn
I enjoy seeing your family interacting with you and the littles learning to obey when you direct their choices...
Thank you, RuthAnne❤
Please share where we can find Ruthann’s cookbook. Thanks
I hope I find your cookbook
I didn't know she had a cookbook out there! Please tell us how to get our hands on it. 🥰
You're an inspiration! The two youngest boys make me laugh. I don't think they ever stop talking!
I really appreciated the tip of slowly changing the temperature before removing the jars.😀
These videos make my Sat mornings! 😂. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I am a 58 yr old empty nester, and the sounds of your kids in the house, however chaotic lol, warms my heart and makes me feel great!!
❤
I feel like your everyone favorite sister. I love the way you film life with all the hustle and bustle of those children around you, precious❤
That little eye-roll when you told Harrison to help Hadassah bring in laundry! Raising boys ~ 😄 They're the best, and love their conversation!
I loved the little "ugh" from the boy when his mom said, "What I need from you is..." Kids! 😂
That tool is one of my favorites as well. My daughter was a pampered chef dealer and that's where i got mine
I got one at dollar tree.......
I love seeing and hearing you interact with the children. Children are such a joy.
Thank you for the advice for decreasing the temperature slowly when using a Camp Chef burner. I canned your baked beans recipe this past week and had a good bit of siphoning. Now I know how to better keep that from happening in the future. Love your videos and recipes.
Thank you!!!
About 40 yrs ago I made home-cooked Ketchup. I canned it reused baby food jars. It was the best Ketchup I ever had.
I love salsa on breakfast, burritos.
I just love watching and hearing the boys when helping you or just whatever they're doing! They're all boy for sure. I think I enjoy that as much as I do your content! It's real life.
Yes I agree
❤❤❤ totally agree, I even enjoy the occasional disagreements they have. 😆
Your videos are so informative and enjoyable. I look forward to seeing you every Saturday morning.
What a LOT of hamburg to can at one time! This was really enjoyable to watch!
We’ve been empty nesters for many years and it brings me so much joy to watch your family in the videos. The recipes are fabulous too.
I look forward to Saturday mornings. A hot cup of tea and a new Ruthann video before anyone gets up. You are such a good teacher.
I also watch you while I have my morning coffee. I have two grown kids and didn't do much canning when they were growing up. But I am enjoying more each year. I have learned so much from you. I especially love my canned green beans. I added the zinc, and they are beautiful.
I just love watching how helpful your children are. Thank you for sharing with us.
I’m so glad I found your channel a while ago. I’m much older and wish I had this information when I was way younger. I grew up a city girl and found this prepping/self sustainable lifestyle in my late 50’s. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! 😂
Thank you for sharing your family, lifestyle and your Godly heart❤.
My Mom's sloppy Joe "recipe" uses less brown sugar, no white sugar and no vinegar. It also adds some yellow mustard. I don't think it was ever written down, but my daughter makes it for her family. Ahh, hand me downs!
My sloppy joe recipe is very similar but no vinegar, is the vinegar only if your canning it?
@@asmith8973 wouldn't think so as it's pressure canned so the acidity level really doesn't matter
Usually meat is canned for 90 minutes so I think the vinegar and sugar are necessary for this recipe as a canning recipe.😊
I add ketchup, mustard, pickle juice and maybe a little bit of brown sugar to my sloppy joes, but have never canned them. Love your videos!
I've never heard of putting sugar regular or brown. Does it give a sweet flavor?
I love your recipes and how organized you are. Your children are blessed having been taught by you.
Thank you for the info about drying onions, I had no idea!!!!
I LOVE the cows lowing at dusk❤
Looks really yummy. Nice to see the children helping. Well mannered children.
It took three weeks, but arrived in one piece and very pleased with it
Wonderful. You could buy the Ball Blue book of canning. A new edition is available.
This is pretty much my mom's recipe that I use. We use dry mustard though. Yours looks so good.
I’ve learned so much watching your videos. Never thought to can sloppy joes. Brilliant!
God bless and keep up the good work
❤❤❤
lol. I love it!!!
Good morning RuthAnn,
I just harvested my onions and put them in my cold room to dry.
Great idea for the onion scraps!!!
Be Brave, you can do it! Follow your manual!
@@hollytaylor6858 thank you!
@@Lori.. I used to be scared, and leave the room, when the weight started juggling, cause I was afraid the top would blow, but I realized it has 2backups to release pressure, so I got more comfortable with it 😊
@@hollytaylor6858 it's funny, I told my husband that I am going to do it in the basement just in case it blows up!😆
@@Lori.. 🤣that's good, or do it outside like RuthAnn! That would be great?
Love your outdoor canning setup!
I know that you are a very busy mom and wife, but I love your videos and wish you had time to make more .
Good to know.
Enjoyed spending a little time watching you do this as I’m processing more tomatoes. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I appreciate you!! 🧡🧡
Thank you friend!!
Love watching your videos. Your videos are so grounding in the presence of a world so unsafe and depressing.
Ruthann I ordered one of those choppers you used today with your onions. It was great for chopping up mustard pickle veggies! TY! 🇨🇦
My weekly dose of Ruthann. Watching & taking notes - it’s my favorite!!! ❤❤❤
