Big time watcher. As a friend and a medic I should Inform you that Covid is mostly bullshit. They had the PCR set ridiculously high so it gave an extreme number of positives and used it as an excuse to lock everyone down. As for the deaths they ran Nursing Homes like death camps. They had "Covid Units" ofcourse for positive patients. But let's say grandma falls in the Nursing Home they will send her to the ER give her a covid test she'll show negative. Then she will be x-rayed if nothing is wrong they send her back to the Nursing Home. However now they will put her IN the Covid Unit even with a negative test. For a mandatory 2 weeks. This ofcourse puts them at a MUCH HIGHER risk of catching the virus because you have them surrounded by Covid positive patients with the same nursing staff going in and out of the rooms back and forth. After 2 weeks she will be returned to the General Population of the Nursing Home. The virus incubates and then she spreads Covid. I brought up how insane this was to a Nursing Home staff member I was told they were "following orders from corporate" that Nursing Home had 13 patients die. And that was over a year ago. But now in all honesty I haven't seen a positive case here in Texas near Austin the capital for almost 2 MONTHS. Not a single one. And even then I only saw 1 person die with it and they died of a stroke they were 94 and a vegetable.... She was listed as a Covid death. I figure they were trying to kill off everyone on Medicaid and old vets with their government funded Veterans Insurance.
Make friends with a Prep'er y'all. No one gets out'a life alive, it's all about comfort and living on ones own terms. Woke'ness and Critical Racisim Theory is going to drive us to kill each other or ourselves. We can not live together if everyone is being fed hate and victim hood every minute of every day.
I took my reluctant son to an intro class when he was 11. He came off the mat and said, "Dad you know I'm hooked, right?" Its been 13 months and watching him train and grow are the highlights of my week. He took Gold in his first tournament last October. He has always been pretty motivated , but he is a different kind of kid now. He sets an alarm to work out every night and he is absolutely ripped for a 12 year old. I have no doubt that Jiu Jitsu will continue to be a defining influence in his life.
@@GG-mx9fj fingers crossed. We have a lot of conversations about the influences he has and will see. He asks a lot of questions and we have a great relationship. Hopefully he’ll stay strong.
Been training bjj for 16 years, have my blackbelt. One surprising thing I think is important about it is human touch, babies die without human contact even if all their needs are met. I think its beneficial to people suffering depression and anxiety to have that contact even if it seems violent to the outside observer.
Having taught a martial art for over 30 years, the one thing I am constantly reminded of is the need for young men to engage in this kind of highly physical yet controlled interaction with other men. The lessons learned are both humbling and empowering. Russell, you really have evolved from a funny guy to a man of substance. Men with depth such as yours rule their worlds.
Interestingly its young women who need to learn how to defend themselves even more than young men as the statistics for assault and murder of women is horrifyingly high, their need for empowerment is at least as great if not greater than young mens.

Young men and their roles have been so diminished in modern society that they have no idea where they fit in and certainly are not as equipped as young women in terms of NON-physical self-defence. This is not about assault or threat thereof. This is about how young men have been deprived of paths to manhood. Many have missed an essential part of their development. A pathetic consequence of the social engineering going on nowadays. By all means, learn to defend yourself. But please do not seek to dilute the very real problem of what is happening to our young men nowadays. Little of it is positive.
Lack of BJJ had such a negative impact on my mental health over the lockdown. Really made me realise how impactful the benefits were to my day to day life.
I think a lot of people felt this. The meditative and escapism element of rolling left a huge hole in many peoples lives over lockdown when they had nothing to 'get lost' in for a few hours. Live sparring arts consume the brain like no other sport, the feeling that you have forced your will upon another fully resisting person or had the same done to you all whilst mentally trying to solve an ever changing puzzle creates a whole host of primal and intellectual bodily responses that the body/brain must learn to crave like a drug.
I’ve done it since Dec 2018 because of rogan and jocko talking about it so much. It’s the best thing I ever did, blue belt now and will do for the rest of my life. Literally everyone should do it, kids, women and men. It’s taught me so much. I can’t put it into words, highly recommend! Congrats on the blue belt Russell!
BJJ changed my life so drastic, it litterally saved my life. I was fighting a depression and still am but i learned to deal with it and that gives me inner peace and strength to cope with it on a positive way. And the people who practice bjj are all such good people who have empathy and love for one and other.
Or maybe he is doing so many different activities in his life that it is not his only hobby and he is not training like a pro. Let's be honest, everyone has his own learning curve. These days it is quite rare to gain belts too quickly as long as you are not an active competitor or prodigy. Other than that, Gracie curriculum is quite different from other Brazilian Jiu jitsu associations and from what I heard these schools are starting teachings from basic self-defence stuff, which is probably taking some time to learn.
@@1millioncicades183 I'm in a Gracie school as a white belt. They have a structure, curriculum-based approach that really appeals to folks like me who like to see things from a big picture standpoint. My first time trying BJJ was in 2016 and the "throw you to the wolves" mentality of just showing up and getting your ass kicked for months on end with no real idea of what the road ahead looks like really pushed me away and I quit after about 6 months. I started at a local Gracie gym about 8 months ago and it's totally different. You have to go through a fundamentals, self-defense based curriculum called Combatives that you have to test out of in order to go to the Master Cycle classes where you actually roll. So next month I'm planning to test out of Combatives, and while I'm totally prepared to get my ass handed to me once I start rolling, having 30 or so fundamental techniques in my tool chest gives me a much greater sense of preparedness and I actually am looking forward to the challenge, whereas before I just felt overwhelmed and aimless.
@@Away.Aweigh.A.Way. oh for sure it can be useful in some way, there is a chance that you will at least have a nice basic takedown in your toolbox and more courage. I mean there is nothing wrong with it, as long it won't take you too much time. Most useful things I still learned from sparrings and bjj scout ;) Personally I liked the daily grind and being "thowed to the wolves" from day one but it probably depends on trust on people you are rolling with, their will to help you, your mindset and age. Youngsters have easier time learnings things hard way :)
@@jsealejandro06 Don't worry about stripes, they are not meaningful. But it is good to try some competition from time to time, you will probably get stripes quicker and it will raise your confidence. In my own opinion it is a good idea to treat bjj as a RPG game, you need to learn one skill at time and polish it through process of smart drilling, analyzing it in your brain, training and competition. It is rather slow but very rewarding. Other than that, don't be afraid to ask your coach on what you should work at the moment.

My two daughters started BJJ about 4 years ago, our eldest had been getting bullied at school so I asked them to join a local martial arts club. They have never looked back and are both well disciplined in BJJ, Muay Thai and Judo. Our 13 year old is a Yellow belt and very confident in her abilities and our 16 year old is a Green belt and can already handle adult Blue Belt men, so if you have kids get them into BJJ, best thing we ever did for ours.
BJJ *and* Muay Thai? My friend, your daughters are prepared to defend themselves from anyone. They're walking, living weapons. That's the perfect martial art combination. That's awesome! I hope to see more young ladies take up the sport(s). They're more than fighting, they're therapy.
I'm a blue belt too. I remember the 1st day for about 5 minutes feeling a bit strange being close to another guy but that went within 5 minutes. As soon as you are learning or someone is trying to choke you out or arm bar you etc, survival kicks in and anything sexual is the last thing on your mind lol. People go to forget everything, for that hour it's about fixing a puzzle etc, just about the art.. an escape for an hour from all the bs in their lives. I agree it's very humbling. I was submitted by a purple belt just before lock down. I was 51 and he was 71. It took him a while but he got me. It's humbling because people who look weaker or don't look tough tap you out and everyone including black belts have all gone through this process and still are. The best members in society I have met are Martial Artists.
100% agree with you its healthy to be able to lose and still see the lesson in it. Nothing like a check to your ego to remind you just how human you are on any given day.
@Gorgeous George there's certainly truth in what you're saying. A grappling type martial art is only realistically useful for 1vs1. In a 1vs1 though, the coordination and technique (skill) can overcome a stronger opponent. So a false sense of confidence isn't completely true, this will depend on the maturity of each individual. About the powerful guys... lifting strength doesn't automatically convert to hitting hard. Welterweight fighters who've trained for years, hit a lot harder than the average big guys that aren't trained fighters. Running is still a good idea if the option's available though. I do believe though that men who are genuinely among the hardest, don't go around starting fights. Partly because they've got nothing to prove, and because if they did, they'd end up in prison quickly. It's a bit like if a chihuahua on a leash is barking, snarling and wanting to attack someone... it won't even get reported because it's not a serious threat. If a big dog behaves like that, it is likely to get put down.
I won an MMA fight using jiu-jitsu. One time, I was drinking at a party and got attacked and used jiu-jitsu to get on top till the dude was chill. Jiu-jitsu really is life changing in many ways.
I've recently officially started training although I've been dropping in for the last 2 years because they're in my gym. In our BJJ club there's only one girl and she survived for pretty long, they usually give up in a few months. It's a high testosteroe chauvinistic environment which tends to be pretty toxic for girls. I'm sorry it's that way because she's really nice but it's hard to survive it as a girl, wouldn't wish it on any of my female friends.
@@dejangegic sorry to hear that. My club is the opposite, very welcoming and the men are all gentleman who are happy to roll with women. That might explain why there's a lot of women at my club. I think the values of the club are a reflection on the coaches. If they are chauvinists, so will the men they teach. Is there another club in your area?

Best of journeys to you! Do your best to leave your ego at the door it won’t enjoy what is to come. Also in training tap sooner and more frequently (hard to do when ego is present). Not only will you get exposed to more positions and possibilities faster but your joints will thank you.
Some tips for your first class. 1. Always walk with your arms far from your body and chest puffed out to show you are self confident. 2. Challenge the instructor in a manner that shows skepticism to his ability. They won't put rank on someone who is too shy to pick a fight. 3. Work on a celebration dance and use it any time you achieve a submission. It shows character. 4. Always brag about your progression. People need to know you are proud. 6. If someone catches you in a submission and makes you tap make sure you have a good excuse why. It helps to create a mind map of excuses so you can rattle them off without hesitation. Make a point to mention that things would be different if it was a real fight. 7. Never be calm or slow. Always use as much strength as possible and make plenty of erratic movements. 8. Constantly interrupt the instructor during a technique and question the validity of every movement. It shows critical thinking. 9. Avoid rolling with people who you know can beat you so you can maintain your image. 10. Don't shower and make sure you have very long fingernails.

Very true, every time I listen to his videos it’s like ‘are you living my life’ he just seems to know what I need to hear. I trained in martial arts, best thing I ever did the fine tuning it does to your spirit, body and confidence can never be learnt through any other art.
I was 29 when I started and I could honestly say that if I didn't start then my 30s - I turn 40 in a couple months - would have been a lot less fruitful, both health-wise and in my personality traits and ability to manage real life adult issues.

I was just checking out the Gracie videos and was thrilled to see that you are a part of this community as well! I just started taking a local Women's Self-Defense Course using Jiu-Jitsu techniques. I'm 63, so it's new moves for sure and I'm discovering where my body is weak, but loving it. Totally excited to have this opportunity and experience and very happy to see yours!!!

@@StaleBearFarts Honestly? It has changed my life 100%. I do 5 sessions a week. Got my first stripe, lost 14lbs, met countless new mates and my confidence and fitness has soared. I broke my big toe yesterday though but I wont let that stop me!! My professor has said next month I can join the advanced classes.

I am a 46 year old happily married father of two beautiful girls, I have accomodated rapid cycling bipolar disorder probably since my late teens and I am a Gemini (24th May). I too blew away a lot of years self medicating with recreational whatnot. A BJJ club has just opened up down the road from me and not being in too bad a state I think I am going to give it a shot, I remembered you talking about it some time back and being an avid fan of Joe Rogan and all things combat sports it seems like the perfect fit. So much truth in what Russel says here. Over 20 years of regular training changed my outlook, life and body for the better. Jujitsu classes and rolling on the mats with my mates is what I’ve missed most this last year through covid.
I just started BJJ last week and I’m starting to relate to all this. Physical contact after covid lock down and building relationships with others and building more confidence in my own ability to be more comfortable with the uncomfortable has just begun. I’m excited to see where it brings me on and off the mat. Great video

Phenomenal. Persistence is especially critical in BJJ. I was a kid who was bullied for a significant period of time and a result always felt anxiety around other men. In the two years I’ve been at it, I’ve become way more comfortable and confident in those situations especially. Super worth it.
Great advice RB. I just started in April at my local Gracie Barra and at 49 yo I’m having so much fun. All of these points you mention I’m definitely feeling and you explained them well. Anyone thinking of starting should really give it a go. Once you get past the nerves and how intimidating it can be you find a great collective group helping you on the journey you’re all on together. Looking forward to earning my blue belt.

Had my first BJJ lesson yesterday. Im hooked! As a woman I felt welcomed and included. Everyone was friendly and there were no issues in it being mostly men and a handful of women. I'm so excited to see the progress I will make! I'm going to continue focusing on my own personal growth. I STRONGLY encourage other women to join! It's the funnest workout you'll have, plus I'm certain after much practice, we can feel a confidence knowing that if any alterations happen in real life, we have tools and physical experience for defending ourselves. @@alex.jay.davidson The only way to learn and become more proficient is to keep going. I feel like the type who would drop out has some different motivations in beginning the sport. Being close to 40, I need more hardship, struggle, and pain in my life so I don't see myself stopping any time soon 😁 What position was that first tap? I thought I learned straight leg lock and an arm bar - playing it over in my head went well, but executing it the day after didn't work lol got to try again tonight!
The synthesis and capitulation that Russell really does about BJJ is excellent. I've been in martial arts since 1984 when I first saw the karate kid. I'm not sure what I was really looking for at that time. Today, 3 black belts in different martial disciplines later (Tae kwon do, kickboxing and full contact) I can assure you that only in my forties, after an extensive journey, I found what I was looking for in BJJ. It is the most complex and technical martial art that I have studied, and also the first that I feel has produced a profound change in me as a person. It is very difficult to explain it to someone, and for that person to really understand it, without first trying on the kimono, that damn white belt, and being submitted a million times. My boys will learn basic combat, weaponry, and athletics with the hope they'll immerse themselves in classical learning. Whatever they want to focus on is up to them. A well rounded young man grows up to be a healthy, productive member of society.
I can relate to this video, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has changed my life as well and will continue to do it till my later life. Keep up the good work and hopefully one day we can train.

Interesting. Bjj changed my life also. Did rehab programs and would have wrestling nights. Armbar a guy that has 100 pounds on you and benches 280 can raise your self confidence something great. Knowing you can defend yourself regardless of the attacker is priceless.

I started BJJ about three weeks ago and so far I think it's one of the best decisions I've made, it's difficult and could be awkward for some people, but I largely just accept it all as part of the process and I'm to have begun my journey.
Bjj is my favorite activiy, if I didn't have to work to pay the bills, I would dedicate most of my day to it. I agree that it makes you really feel part of a community, and the fact that you know yourself a little better, your strenghts and weaknessess, in such a way that you and it gives such a confidence that becomes evident thru all your actions, you carry yourself different because of that.
This warms my heart and soul! Thank you Russell for sharing these wisdom teachings. So very close to home for me. My daughters are in a Gracie Jiu Jitsu style and mixed martial arts Dojo. Ages 14, & 9 Previously they were competitive dancers. And were pretty good at that. Yet restricted... they were only there for their Love of dance ... yet that culture basically beat out their Love of dancing and creative expression and shoved it into a tiny box Yet when they had the choice to do both martial arts and dance, they both begged me to quit dance and only do Martial arts. Their soul recognizes the wisdom and compassion from their Sifus. That was absent in the dance world. They look forward to Dojo class, and don’t complain or drag their feet when it’s time to get ready! Whereas with dance they complained a lot. their confidence and self worth has radically boosted since starting. And their ability to communicate their needs with respect. All in all I’m so glad that they choose this discipline. Because of how effective and street wise this discipline is! And because there’s such an elegant crossover of frivolous/ sparkly dance to practical and grounded martial arts. I’m trained myself in a different style of martial arts but I didn’t want to do just because I do. I’m excited to share this video with them and see how they respond. May Harmony continue to bless the RB dojo collective. May principles of Truth, Life, Freedom and Love for humanity guide all of our paths back to the One infinite creator

Hi Russel, I used to have a daily drug habit until 4 years ago when I decided to change my life. In order to get healthier I started training in martial arts, Wing Chun and Judo and I also started to learn Hatha Yoga, These three things I believe helped save my life and made me a better person. Bless you brother for spreading the word. Martial arts also gives you confidence and allows you to keep calm when threatened.As far as the sexual thing is concerned I am happily heterosexual and expect to remain so as I find women to attractive to change!

After 2 weeks she will be returned to the General Population of the Nursing Home. The virus incubates and then she spreads Covid. I brought up how insane this was to a Nursing Home staff member I was told they were "following orders from corporate" that Nursing Home had 13 patients die. And that was over a year ago. But now in all honesty I haven't seen a positive case here in Texas near Austin the capital for almost 2 MONTHS. Not a single one. And even then I only saw 1 person die with it and they died of a stroke they were 94 and a vegetable.... She was listed as a Covid death.
I figure they were trying to kill off everyone on Medicaid and old vets with their government funded Veterans Insurance.

I took my reluctant son to an intro class when he was 11. He came off the mat and said, "Dad you know I'm hooked, right?" Its been 13 months and watching him train and grow are the highlights of my week. He took Gold in his first tournament last October. He has always been pretty motivated , but he is a different kind of kid now. He sets an alarm to work out every night and he is absolutely ripped for a 12 year old. I have no doubt that Jiu Jitsu will continue to be a defining influence in his life.

Been training bjj for 16 years, have my blackbelt. One surprising thing I think is important about it is human touch, babies die without human contact even if all their needs are met. I think its beneficial to people suffering depression and anxiety to have that contact even if it seems violent to the outside observer.

Having taught a martial art for over 30 years, the one thing I am constantly reminded of is the need for young men to engage in this kind of highly physical yet controlled interaction with other men. The lessons learned are both humbling and empowering. Russell, you really have evolved from a funny guy to a man of substance. Men with depth such as yours rule their worlds.

Interestingly its young women who need to learn how to defend themselves even more than young men as the statistics for assault and murder of women is horrifyingly high, their need for empowerment is at least as great if not greater than young mens.

This is not about assault or threat thereof. This is about how young men have been deprived of paths to manhood. Many have missed an essential part of their development. A pathetic consequence of the social engineering going on nowadays. By all means, learn to defend yourself. But please do not seek to dilute the very real problem of what is happening to our young men nowadays. Little of it is positive.

I think a lot of people felt this. The meditative and escapism element of rolling left a huge hole in many peoples lives over lockdown when they had nothing to 'get lost' in for a few hours. Live sparring arts consume the brain like no other sport, the feeling that you have forced your will upon another fully resisting person or had the same done to you all whilst mentally trying to solve an ever changing puzzle creates a whole host of primal and intellectual bodily responses that the body/brain must learn to crave like a drug.
Same for me...my anxiety went thru the roof.
I’ve done it since Dec 2018 because of rogan and jocko talking about it so much. It’s the best thing I ever did, blue belt now and will do for the rest of my life. Literally everyone should do it, kids, women and men. It’s taught me so much. I can’t put it into words, highly recommend! Congrats on the blue belt Russell!
BJJ changed my life so drastic, it litterally saved my life. I was fighting a depression and still am but i learned to deal with it and that gives me inner peace and strength to cope with it on a positive way. And the people who practice bjj are all such good people who have empathy and love for one and other.

The fact that you wore the white belt for a long time is a sign that you have a good coach and good gym.
Or maybe he is doing so many different activities in his life that it is not his only hobby and he is not training like a pro. Let's be honest, everyone has his own learning curve. These days it is quite rare to gain belts too quickly as long as you are not an active competitor or prodigy. Other than that, Gracie curriculum is quite different from other Brazilian Jiu jitsu associations and from what I heard these schools are starting teachings from basic self-defence stuff, which is probably taking some time to learn.

They have a structure, curriculum-based approach that really appeals to folks like me who like to see things from a big picture standpoint. My first time trying BJJ was in 2016 and the "throw you to the wolves" mentality of just showing up and getting your ass kicked for months on end with no real idea of what the road ahead looks like really pushed me away and I quit after about 6 months. I started at a local Gracie gym about 8 months ago and it's totally different. You have to go through a fundamentals, self-defense based curriculum called Combatives that you have to test out of in order to go to the Master Cycle classes where you actually roll. So next month I'm planning to test out of Combatives, and while I'm totally prepared to get my ass handed to me once I start rolling, having 30 or so fundamental techniques in my tool chest gives me a much greater sense of preparedness and I actually am looking forward to the challenge, whereas before I just felt overwhelmed and aimless.

I mean there is nothing wrong with it, as long it won't take you too much time. Most useful things I still learned from sparrings and bjj scout ;)
Personally I liked the daily grind and being "thowed to the wolves" from day one but it probably depends on trust on people you are rolling with, their will to help you, your mindset and age. Youngsters have easier time learnings things hard way :)

@@jsealejandro06 Don't worry about stripes, they are not meaningful. But it is good to try some competition from time to time, you will probably get stripes quicker and it will raise your confidence.
In my own opinion it is a good idea to treat bjj as a RPG game, you need to learn one skill at time and polish it through process of smart drilling, analyzing it in your brain, training and competition. It is rather slow but very rewarding. Other than that, don't be afraid to ask your coach on what you should work at the moment.

My two daughters started BJJ about 4 years ago, our eldest had been getting bullied at school so I asked them to join a local martial arts club. They have never looked back and are both well disciplined in BJJ, Muay Thai and Judo. Our 13 year old is a Yellow belt and very confident in her abilities and our 16 year old is a Green belt and can already handle adult Blue Belt men, so if you have kids get them into BJJ, best thing we ever did for ours.

I'm a blue belt too. I remember the 1st day for about 5 minutes feeling a bit strange being close to another guy but that went within 5 minutes. As soon as you are learning or someone is trying to choke you out or arm bar you etc, survival kicks in and anything sexual is the last thing on your mind lol. People go to forget everything, for that hour it's about fixing a puzzle etc, just about the art.. an escape for an hour from all the bs in their lives. I agree it's very humbling. I was submitted by a purple belt just before lock down. I was 51 and he was 71. It took him a while but he got me. It's humbling because people who look weaker or don't look tough tap you out and everyone including black belts have all gone through this process and still are. The best members in society I have met are Martial Artists.
100% agree with you its healthy to be able to lose and still see the lesson in it. Nothing like a check to your ego to remind you just how human you are on any given day.

@Gorgeous George there's certainly truth in what you're saying. A grappling type martial art is only realistically useful for 1vs1. In a 1vs1 though, the coordination and technique (skill) can overcome a stronger opponent. So a false sense of confidence isn't completely true, this will depend on the maturity of each individual.
About the powerful guys... lifting strength doesn't automatically convert to hitting hard. Welterweight fighters who've trained for years, hit a lot harder than the average big guys that aren't trained fighters. Running is still a good idea if the option's available though.
I do believe though that men who are genuinely among the hardest, don't go around starting fights. Partly because they've got nothing to prove, and because if they did, they'd end up in prison quickly. It's a bit like if a chihuahua on a leash is barking, snarling and wanting to attack someone... it won't even get reported because it's not a serious threat. If a big dog behaves like that, it is likely to get put down.
I won an MMA fight using jiu-jitsu. One time, I was drinking at a party and got attacked and used jiu-jitsu to get on top till the dude was chill. Jiu-jitsu really is life changing in many ways.
I have this problem where I look intimidating but im actually a sweetheart, so no one wants to engage anyway. It gets lonely. ✌🏼🤘🏼

I've recently officially started training although I've been dropping in for the last 2 years because they're in my gym.
In our BJJ club there's only one girl and she survived for pretty long, they usually give up in a few months. It's a high testosteroe chauvinistic environment which tends to be pretty toxic for girls. I'm sorry it's that way because she's really nice but it's hard to survive it as a girl, wouldn't wish it on any of my female friends.

Best of journeys to you! Do your best to leave your ego at the door it won’t enjoy what is to come. Also in training tap sooner and more frequently (hard to do when ego is present). Not only will you get exposed to more positions and possibilities faster but your joints will thank you.

Some tips for your first class.
1. Always walk with your arms far from your body and chest puffed out to show you are self confident.
2. Challenge the instructor in a manner that shows skepticism to his ability. They won't put rank on someone who is too shy to pick a fight.
3. Work on a celebration dance and use it any time you achieve a submission. It shows character.
4. Always brag about your progression. People need to know you are proud.
6. If someone catches you in a submission and makes you tap make sure you have a good excuse why. It helps to create a mind map of excuses so you can rattle them off without hesitation. Make a point to mention that things would be different if it was a real fight.
7. Never be calm or slow. Always use as much strength as possible and make plenty of erratic movements.
8. Constantly interrupt the instructor during a technique and question the validity of every movement. It shows critical thinking.
9. Avoid rolling with people who you know can beat you so you can maintain your image.
10. Don't shower and make sure you have very long fingernails.
BJJ is such a humbling experience. It’s more than just a martial art. You learn so much about yourself. After my first class I was hooked.

Phenomenal. Persistence is especially critical in BJJ. I was a kid who was bullied for a significant period of time and a result always felt anxiety around other men. In the two years I’ve been at it, I’ve become way more comfortable and confident in those situations especially. Super worth it.

Great advice RB. I just started in April at my local Gracie Barra and at 49 yo I’m having so much fun. All of these points you mention I’m definitely feeling and you explained them well. Anyone thinking of starting should really give it a go. Once you get past the nerves and how intimidating it can be you find a great collective group helping you on the journey you’re all on together. Looking forward to earning my blue belt.

What position was that first tap? I thought I learned straight leg lock and an arm bar - playing it over in my head went well, but executing it the day after didn't work lol got to try again tonight!

The synthesis and capitulation that Russell really does about BJJ is excellent. I've been in martial arts since 1984 when I first saw the karate kid. I'm not sure what I was really looking for at that time. Today, 3 black belts in different martial disciplines later (Tae kwon do, kickboxing and full contact) I can assure you that only in my forties, after an extensive journey, I found what I was looking for in BJJ. It is the most complex and technical martial art that I have studied, and also the first that I feel has produced a profound change in me as a person. It is very difficult to explain it to someone, and for that person to really understand it, without first trying on the kimono, that damn white belt, and being submitted a million times. My boys will learn basic combat, weaponry, and athletics with the hope they'll immerse themselves in classical learning. Whatever they want to focus on is up to them. A well rounded young man grows up to be a healthy, productive member of society.

I can relate to this video, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has changed my life as well and will continue to do it till my later life. Keep up the good work and hopefully one day we can train.

Interesting. Bjj changed my life also. Did rehab programs and would have wrestling nights. Armbar a guy that has 100 pounds on you and benches 280 can raise your self confidence something great. Knowing you can defend yourself regardless of the attacker is priceless.
@LittlefootwithAlopecia I would like to read your comment...I self thought jujitsu and other fighting techniques to prevent bullying and found myself looking for fights.I chose a different path then what is discussed here.

I started BJJ about three weeks ago and so far I think it's one of the best decisions I've made, it's difficult and could be awkward for some people, but I largely just accept it all as part of the process and I'm to have begun my journey.
You, Joe Rogan and Jocko Willink have convinced me to do this. To not be afraid of myself, life and my past. Thank you because BJJ is saving me.
Bjj is my favorite activiy, if I didn't have to work to pay the bills, I would dedicate most of my day to it. I agree that it makes you really feel part of a community, and the fact that you know yourself a little better, your strenghts and weaknessess, in such a way that you and it gives such a confidence that becomes evident thru all your actions, you carry yourself different because of that.
This warms my heart and soul! Thank you Russell for sharing these wisdom teachings. So very close to home for me.
My daughters are in a Gracie Jiu Jitsu style and mixed martial arts Dojo.
Ages 14, & 9
Previously they were competitive dancers. And were pretty good at that.
Yet restricted... they were only there for their Love of dance ... yet that culture basically beat out their Love of dancing and creative expression and shoved it into a tiny box
Yet when they had the choice to do both martial arts and dance, they both begged me to quit dance and only do Martial arts.
Their soul recognizes the wisdom and compassion from their Sifus. That was absent in the dance world.
They look forward to Dojo class, and don’t complain or drag their feet when it’s time to get ready! Whereas with dance they complained a lot.
their confidence and self worth has radically boosted since starting. And their ability to communicate their needs with respect.
All in all I’m so glad that they choose this discipline. Because of how effective and street wise this discipline is!
And because there’s such an elegant crossover of frivolous/ sparkly dance to practical and grounded martial arts.
I’m trained myself in a different style of martial arts but I didn’t want to do just because I do.
I’m excited to share this video with them and see how they respond.

Hi Russel, I used to have a daily drug habit until 4 years ago when I decided to change my life. In order to get healthier I started training in martial arts, Wing Chun and Judo and I also started to learn Hatha Yoga, These three things I believe helped save my life and made me a better person. Bless you brother for spreading the word. Martial arts also gives you confidence and allows you to keep calm when threatened.As far as the sexual thing is concerned I am happily heterosexual and expect to remain so as I find women to attractive to change!
