What system are you on? You can use almost every external hard drive for PS4/Xbox one games. Only the latest gen games need that expansion card for series x.

@@MetalJuggalo that's true. On my Xbox one x, I ran 2 4tb external hard drives. The USB ones and it worked well. On my series x , I have the 1tb expansion card for the series x games and a USB external 8tb Seagate Xbox game hub drive. I never had to unscrew stuff, just plug n play. However there are some guys on TH-cam that show you have to replace the SSD for a faster / better one on the original Xbox one and the Xbox one x.

So would you be able to save the OG xbox game game onto your hard drive and play it off of that like you would a 360 game? I ask because I’d like to avoid using the laser if not necessary so this way you could just load the game onto the hard drive and it’ll play as long as the disk is in the drive, but it just won’t read it off the disk rather than hard drive. A little late for an answer, but you need a different type of HDD for the original model. Slim HDDs won't fit. The one you're looking for is gray colored and mounts on the side if memory serves.

I recently bought sonic heroes and a official Xbox 360 Hard drive the older fatter one because I have a Xbox 360 from 2009 and whenever I try play the game it says attach an official xbox 360 hard drive but mine is official because it has the Microsoft thing on it and says HDD on the silver part on top. Do you need to be online to play the og games or do they run off the disk? I heard the 360 backwards compatibility uses the disk as a proof of purchase and saves a port off online to play. Hope thats not true since xbl for 360 is shutting down

Yeah now that x360 is retro they are going to be pricey and much harder to find especially since Microsoft stopped supplying them I just bought my 360 a day ago online brand new for little over 800$ believe it or not I could've got a used 360 for a few hundred dollars or less but I wanted a new 1 in box sealed crazy how quickly their prices risen our Walmart here are selling them for 5 thousand dollars even people on ebay are asking a thousand for them lol I think I'm the only idiot that bought a 360 for almost a thousand dollars

Does your xbox have a hard drive? In the older arcade models (arcade and elite) you had a removable hard drive, but in the Slim S models there are two variants, one with 250 GB hard drive, and one with only 4 GB flash memory (this one can't play original Xbox games, unless you buy a separate hard drive). Idk about the Slim E though

So if you have an official Xbox 360 hard drive and it has the Microsoft branding and everything it will work. If the hard drive doesn't say Xbox 360 or doesn't have any Microsoft serial numbers then it won't work.

Go down to system items there should be file which contains the backwards compatibility if you bought the hard drive from a second hand shop they would of wipped everything off it including the backwards compatibility sadly without it you won't be able to play and original xbox games.

@@Jami4165 You can download the file from microsoft. I have been trying to get the blasted file on there using their directions. According to them you take the random weird file name and change it to default.xex and then put it on a CD. I did this 10 different ways and it still didn't work. I also thought maybe they made a typo and it's supposed to be .exe(which would make a lot of sense) this didn't work either. Now that I have read this thread, I'll try installing the file directly onto the HDD. I'll try using windows live file system copy and the original default.xex title on a dvd-rw...hopefully that works. I'll update here if it does.
