    Super VHS also gave us the invention of the S-Video connector. At first, it was specifically called the S-VHS video connector until other formats started using it as well. And many later standard VHS VCRs from the '90s and 2000s have "Quasi S-VHS Playback" (SQPB) which allows you to play S-VHS recordings, although the output will be reduced to standard VHS quality.

      I had a bunch of composite RCA cables handy and ready to use, but I wanted to make mention of this connection. It took some digging to find one of my S-Video cables. Thank you for your valued input.

      The S-Video connector never stood for S-VHS. It stands for Separate Video as in Luminance and Chrominance are separate. It was found on Hi-8 cameras and even LaserDisc. It never stood for S-VHS, but people mistook it for S-VHS.

    I owned several JVC SuperVHS ET units. They had a pretty good picture in my view. I was disappointed in the quality of DVD recorders that were stand alone units. The JVC DVD recorders usually had a very short life because of no cooling fan, but the picture quality was very good. The Funai manufactured units lasted almost forever, but just had a great picture. Sony had a great picture with both Beta and with some of their VHS recorders which must use a motorboard design, because of a near instant rewind feature as well as commercial skip, and other advanced functions.

    As I suspected it seems 'SVHS ET' is nothing more than ignoring the SVHS detection pin(s) - ie: identical performance as people who were previously drilling holes in standard VHS tapes to trick SVHS decks to record on them in SVHS standard, albeit with lower quality.

  • @aquaevitae

    In S-VHS, only luminance signal was enhanced, but chrominance signal was as poor than regular VHS, and that's why the quality on S-VHS wasn't actually so much better than regular VHS.

    • @ThriftyAV

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My suggestion would be to purchase a VHS-C adapter and play the tapes on a standard VCR. If you do not have a VCR, you probably know someone who does, and VHS VCRs can be found at thrift stores on a regular basis.

    • @paco0222
      @paco0222 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThriftyAV I've thought about that, but I also want to digitally record then as well with a capture card. Can you do that with an S.Video cable?

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paco0222 If the source is SVHS-C, I would suggest an S-Video cable. If the source is VHS-C, then there is no significant advantage to S-Video over a regular yellow RCA composite cable.
      Either way, you would need to hook the VCR output to some type of capture device to dub over the tape contents.

    • @billmorrigan386
      @billmorrigan386 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paco 022 Just my two cents. You can easily and properly (in high quality) digitize your tapes by hooking up a VCR/camcorder to a DVD recorder. The prerequisite is a high quality VCR, otherwise footage will not look very good on DVD. Once the footage is transferred to a DVD, you can easily manipulate it with some video editing software - your PC just needs a DVD tray. Or you can watch your recording from a DVD recorder or on DVD/Blu-Ray players. Otherwise the tape will degrade and wear off even more. I even encountered tapes that can no longer be played back at all. The footage degraded completely.
      Unfortunately, improperly captured/transferred footage looks very bad. VHS in itself is not very good in terms of quality and it degrades over time. It's important to transfer the footage to a DVD. There are paid services that offer people transfers of old tapes to modern standards. It might be your best option to convert the tape to a DVD. As I said, VHS tapes degrade over time and after repeated playback. Wear and tear. DVDs do not degrade unless they are scratched, left on the sun, etc. Anyway, DVDs can be easily copied (the ones without copy right protection), so that footage remains forever in its current condition. That's just my advice.
      PS: properly converted VHS tapes should have around 720x576 (in PAL) and 720x480 (in NTSC) pixels of resolution. They won't look as clean as DVDs but it's not that bad either unless transfer was butchered or a low resolution was used like 360x480, etc. Or unless tapes were not stored/maintained properly and therefore degraded completely. The latter often happens in humid climates which is very unfortunate.

    Hello I have the JVC SVHS C SUPER VHS and I use the elgato capture software to convert my videos on my MacBook but when I screen record the footage it still has SP with the record time on the top of the footage, any help to get rid of that? I watched your video and I turned off as much as I could on the date and time but still can’t get the top right SP and time icon off

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I played around with it tonight using both the S-Video and RCA video outputs. When in "camera" mode, I'm only getting text overlays when I hit the "menu" button. When playing back tapes, I do not have any overlays created by the camera, but some of the old tapes have the date/time stamp recorded onto the footage. This cannot be undone with footage recorded like this.

    Corrections and an addendum: At 0:31 and again at 1:10 I say that Super VHS was introduced in 1985. It was actually introduced in 1987. At 6:42 I mention that you will need JVC equipment to play back SVHS-ET. This is not true, as JVC licensed out SVHS-ET technology to other brands, including Panasonic, Philips, and Sharp. Please note that at 5:36, I was using an SVHS adapter. An SVHS adapter will work with VHS tapes, but a regular VHS adapter lacks the "hole" that physically indicates that a tape is SVHS.

      Personally, I wouldn't bother fixing it. For playback of tapes you already recorded, you can get an adapter and play the tapes in an old VCR from the thrift store. For new recordings, a smartphone will have higher resolution than this camcorder.

    Not much worse, than the cheaper modern digital camcorders or even better older digital video camcorders.

      They used an RCA Hi8, but this one would have been contemporary to that!

    Have you transferred the video using S-Video cable, or using regular composite cable? Because, frankly, I don't see much of a difference between SVHS and VHS. Also, what did you use for deinterlacing?

      At 7:04 I discuss using S-Video for transfer and the XP setting on the DVD recorder. I ripped the VOB files from the DVD and deinterlaced using PowerDirector18. Interlaced footage was set to top field first. I produced and uploaded a 4K H.264 video file, 20Mbps. I still have the VOB files backed up, so I can use a different deinterlace method for comparison, but unlike early versions of PowerDirector, I've been happy with the "smart deinterlacing" on PowerDirector products since PD15.
