$1000 Datsun 280z Engine Rebuild (Ep.3)

  • Back for more Japanese car punishment, we set out to fix up a "new" L28 engine and modify it here and there to get rid of what won't be needed. Like A/C, power steering, and emissions equipment (it will be a Historic titled car).
    Watch episode 1 here: • $1000 1978 Datsun 280z...
    Watch episode 2 here: • $1000 Datsun 280z Exam...
    We decided the best route was to not bother trying to repair the engine that came in the car and just start "fresh". This new engine came with its own unique challenges, but hopefully everything will work out in the end. This engine came with the fuel injection parts, wiring harness, and computer so Sean wants to take the car back to EFI (instead of using the carb setup the previous owner installed).
    The idea here is to keep things manageable and cheap, so sticking with the engine design that came in the car seems like the only option. For now, at least. Three months in, this quick project has turned into more of an undertaking than we had hoped, but it means you get to see more screw-ups and breaking parts, so it's not a total loss.
    Sean is currently out of country for a few weeks, which is why the voiceover is a one-man-show. I don't think it detracts from this episode, as more banter like in episode 2 would have dragged this out a bit too long anyway. Episode 4 is the engine swap itself, and may be out sooner than you think. What lies in the future for the car however, can only be speculated upon.
    FLASHING LIGHTS WARNING: Lots of strobing in the scenes featuring a welder. Gave me a headache when editing, don't underestimate the power of flashing lights. Kept it short enough I didn't feel it warranted an in-video warning, though.
    Timeline of filming: January 4th - February 24th, 2017
    Song List (Order of First Appearance):
    0:14 Ether - Silent Partner
    1:46 Open Highway - Silent Partner
    3:44 Museums - Silent Partner
    5:41 Last Call - Silent Partner
    9:30 Triangles - Silent Partner
    10:08 Whiskey - Huma-Huma
    10:45 Getting There - Silent Partner
    12:34 Parasail - Silent Partner
    15:50 Passive Struggle - Silent Partner

    I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to watch two smart, passionate back yard mechanics building a dream!!! I LOVE that you've taken the time to video this whole project. I love that you're on a severe budget. I love that you are determined to do it right. I love that you don't just lose interest and leave it sit for months in between (I haven't checked all your video dates but it doesn't seem like you do LOL). I'm subbed and so glad to be watching two unpretentious men get to work and build what a lot of people would consider one of their dream builds! Thanks again! I guess that's a bit too much love but hey I don't care!

    so far I've watched three parts,from the first video I knew this was going to be a good build ,good friendship,good humour,great video editing and you have a car that started out like my 280 except I also had rust.But I had that foam shot every where I took it all,all ,all out.Every morsel gone ,dog legs rockers ,filled both tool boxes with that crap all gone.
    You are doing all the fun stuff if the build looking at it's abusive history and now embarking on making it your own ,my two Z cars 73 240, 78 280 just finished both chassis ,root ,patch,fabricate and replaced back to a solid chassis ,plus. I'm enjoying your build while I'm building mine two at once by me alone. It's cool you have another enthusiast to enjoy the adventure with great job !!!

      It's tough going at a project like that alone, though at least thanks to the internet there is usually information out there that can help you along. And then sometimes you just need to sit on the floor for a few hours and pull out expanding foam somebody "fixed" the holes with. I'm glad you like the series, thank you for the compliments! Best of luck with your cars!

      FuzzyDicePimp well I have been restoring cars since I was 16 ,when I grew tired of the food service industry, and opened my own restoration shop that only focused on sports cars ,restoring mini Coopers,lotus,Porsche,mg,Austin Healey, Alfa,anything that was fun when it was done even kit and replicas. Closed my shop after 20yrs.
      I moved to Florida and just build my own personal cars now. So I'm enjoying building my own cars the way I want ..just to drive.NO computers no fuel injection.Just old school cars in a modern world .Great stress relief.
      great watching your build it's the week end I have two whole days to work on my Zs. I'll relax and watch you guys build yours after I stop working on mine..Good vids.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There is a limit to what it can do haha, we drenched the thing in it. Seems like Nissan used some very questionable metals or hardening for most of their bolts, tons of them came apart. The ones the welder didn't work on drilled out like butter.

    • @jaedonhaskins9917
      @jaedonhaskins9917 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      have you ever tried mixing acetone with ATF? a 50/50 mixture is generally better at penetrating threads than store bought stuff. i dont doubt some of the bolts naturally "welded" themselves to the engine. i guess the expanding and contracting of the metals just took its toll on them.

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have in the past, but didn't have any luck with it. People talk about that mixture like it is the second coming, so I will have to try it out again sometime. And yeah, all of those steel bolts in aluminum parts 38 years later isn't helping anything.

    • @jaedonhaskins9917
      @jaedonhaskins9917 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had really good luck using that mixture to get heavily rusted exhaust bolts off. I've never used it on anything else though.

I used to put my z in a power spin in the middle of a 4 way stop sign intersection. Never hit any thing did get dizzy ! Dont let these haters slow you down. I think that blue paint is factory standard on Nissans/Datsuns from this period. What you thought was junkyard writing also looks like a factory identifier code stencil in white paint. It's not really a surprise, these were pretty tough engines that ran from the early '60s through to the late '80s at least, and probably longer in JDM vehicles. Having come out of a 280ZX it's probably had a pretty easy life being as that car was much more of a GT than a sports car and didn't handle anything like as well as the Z-cars. Sadly, we never (officially) got the 280Z in the UK and by this time we only got the considerably less pretty 260Z 2+2, although plenty of people built there own using engines harvested from rusty or just unwanted 280C saloons/sedans and estates/station wagons...

    for small enough bolts that strip. I drill the heads off and fit my drill hand tightened onto the bolt threading and reverse it out

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time (at least around here) if bolts round off or break, it's because they were rusted or seized in place and they were damaged when trying to loosen them. If that is the case they usually won't come out easy (channel locks work a lot of the time if the bolt head/threads are exposed) if they were stuck enough to break the bolt itself. But if you're lucky, or something was damaged when tightening, I'm sure that trick would work great!

  • @davem5333

    What's your experience level welding and what kind of welder do you guys use? I've never welded before but could use one for the same kind of work you guys are doing? Great videos btw!

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The welder we have is a cheap-o Harbor Freight 170A 240V MIG, and have only used it with flux core wire. It doesn't do so well on thin stuff (using .030 wire and gas would probably help) like exhausts and sheet metal, but it is possible to weld those things and we have done it successfully. It is very easy to use for anything over 1/8" thick. Flux core wire makes a mess but does the job fine. There are some fiddly cheap plastic bits in of the wire feed mechanism that you need to be careful with and play around with to get it to feed at the lower settings.
      Both of us have only ever worked with this one welder with flux core wire so very limited experience, MIG welding is straightforward enough that you can jump right in with only some basic knowledge (and some steel to practice on).

    Hey fuzzy dice literally looking a videos of people buying old 240s and 280s because my neighbors have a old black 240z 70's and I wanted to know if I should buy it off of them? It's an old couple that owns it and it's just sitting the the backyard next to an old 70's VW hatchback

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I bought my first project car at 21, a '78 Firebird (seen in a few glimpses of this series). It was a full year and a half before it was in shape to drive, and uncountable hours of work, but it's very satisfying when you have turned someone else's lawn ornament into your daily transportation, or a weekend cruiser. My second project was a '88 S10 Blazer the previous owner bought to use in a destruction derby. I'm not really into "restoring" cars, so if you want a project car to make it look factory new, that's a different story and will take many more years, or never get done. I'm into fixing cars, bringing them back to life and making them into something that can give you what you want out of them.
      Are project cars time consuming? Of course. Space consuming (need a garage or at least a driveway and no HOA)? Of course. Can they become money pits? Easily. It can be torturous, pain-inducing, back-breaking, heart-wrenching (pun intended) work. But it's also incredibly satisfying, and once you do have it roadworthy it's something you can always improve, upgrade, or just enjoy on your own schedule and at will.
      Of course, it's all up to you. I'd recommend having a back-up, reliable, daily driver and no expectations of schedule for getting a project car running. The 280z in this series is still sitting in my driveway with this engine in it but nothing connected. A car owned by an old couple sitting for years sounds pretty much perfect, if the rot isn't too bad (definitely look all around and underneath it, Datsuns are particularly rusty animals) and the price fits then I say go for it. A car from an old couple is probably unmolested and at least mostly original, unlike the horror show seen in this series, and especially for a first project car that is the best start you could hope for.
      If you take that plunge, I wish you luck. If you ever are looking for any advice (I don't know how much wrenching experience you have) feel free to ask. Anyone bringing an old car back to life is a friend of mine!

      there are plenty examples of guys building a Z that knew nothing ,now they can build another.

    • @Aznfootball7
      @Aznfootball7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this might be a bit late but of course it depends on how much you're willing to pay and how much time you're willing to spend on the car. This Datsun has been a lot of work, I'm lucky enough to have FuzzyDice to help me with fixing and storing the vehicle, without that, it'd be near impossible to have a project car like this for me. If you have the room, time, and passion for the car, you should get it. Without that, it'll be difficult to deal with the car, it'll feel like a money suck and an unworthy investment. If you have these things, or a way to make them happen, totally get it. Worth it 100 percent.

  • @Oblithian
    @Oblithian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why not just rebuild the one you had? It's not that expensive. A re-bore is about $150, Sealed power pistons you can probably find for

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All that, plus it needed an ECU and intake manifold and other parts (Sean wanted to get it back to fuel injection), so it was cheaper and easier to just get another engine.

    sad thing is if you spent around less than 100 you could have hot tanked the engine and repainted it and made it look new. why did you not do this?

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't in the time budget, and we were mostly concerned with getting the car working. It is nice to have a good looking engine, but if we went through that effort it might as well get a full rebuild which means more money and time and that engine likely won't stay in the car forever anyway.

    Wait a minute....are you guys using a torque wrench as a breaker bar???

    • @FuzzyDiceProjects
      @FuzzyDiceProjects  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wrench with the orange tape is indeed a torque wrench, but it was left on a high setting for many years and is considerably out of spec. Therefore, I started using it as a long-handled 1/2" ratchet and it is fantastic at the job! The orange tape marks it to make sure nobody actually tries to use it to torque something though.

      Haha, what do you wash your engines with? I don't know of anyone, even professional engine rebuilders, who don't at least rinse parts off with water. It is ideal to do it with the short block assembled? No, but it didn't cause any problems.
