  • We made the world's heaviest mini sledge hammer out of tungsten carbide and bismuth for guaranteed nailing first try. We did some basic metal casting with green sand and used the 60,000 PSI waterjet to shape it into an epic hammer.

      With the melting point if the two being vastly different however, it makes sense that tungsten is more often alloyed with nickel or iron.

    I can't lie, I'm absolutely blown away that your boss man has continued to allow all of you guys to use his shop, as well as his tools and water jets, his materials, Etc, for this long. I can only imagine what his first thoughts were after hiring Dan and Mitchell, then seeing all the shenanigans and bs they were getting themselves into on TH-cam in his facility and with his equipment. 😂😂 I have to imagine that there is a family link, that they are relatives, or something like that. I don't believe that a boss who had hired them and subsequently noticed that they were doing these things, would allow them to stay for very long. Of course, if he's getting a cut of all of the TH-cam earnings, then I could imagine him being okay with all of it. LOL.
    I also noticed that in the beginning a lot of their videos were being filmed at night, I'm guessing after the shop head shut down for regular business and they wouldn't be in anybody's way. Of course now, we can see they are doing it all during regular business hours. I imagine they get a lot of visitors as well, wanting to check out everything and see the water jets in person as well as the official quality testing tongue. 😂

    • @MGSLurmey
      @MGSLurmey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah as others have said, all metals are crystals. You just can't see the crystal structure in most because it's so small and compacted. Look up electrolysis of copper, tin, or lead and you'll see some cool crystals there too.
      I mean.. to be specific, pretty much all solids are (or can be) crystalline or polycrystalline. Most metals are actually polycrystalline, meaning they're made up of a bunch of tiny crystals all bonded together, rather than one large crystal, as you can see with Bismuth. Silicon isn't technically metal (it's a metalloid) but it is crystalline. Carbon and Sulfur are both nonmetals but both have crystal structures too. Carbon crystals even have a special name: Diamond. Heck, even most compounds form crystalline structures, like Sodium Chloride which is just table salt, and disaccharides like Sucrose, which is just white sugar.
      Even fuckin rocks are also technically crystals. It's just how atoms arrange themselves in a material. The only things that aren't crystals are amorphous solids like glass.

    During the casting, I would have gone for adding some kind of disc plate (preferably steel, but if Tungsten could come in disc form that would be epic) on either side of the hammer’s head, or perhaps even just the one side you wanted to strike with. That way you could have a striking surface that wouldn’t disintegrate on impact while preserving most of the ludicrous mass behind it.
    Of course, someone might have called you out by saying “You just made a steel hammer with extra steps!” And the purpose of your video might be to show that just because it’s heavy, it DOESN’T make for a good hammer. All the same, I like the concept and wanted to throw out a possible design choice I would have made to make it slightly more practical.
    Cheerio!

      Hammers are already designed for the optimal size and mass for human use after thousands of years. There is a good reason why tool hammer are around the same weight around the world. The only difference with tungsten is the hammer head would be smaller. So it is indeed a hammer with extra steps.

    2 part sand casting is what you need. Make your 2 parts of the mold, toss some tung in there before you close it then pour in your bis.

    Tungsten face but bismuth body seems like a cool idea now, be able to drive anything and still look purdy

    Anyone else thought this was a restoration video from the thumbnail. And it was just a very old hammer rather than the finished product xD.

    We use the same metalic pieces to make armour and weapons.
    So yes the armour and weapons are heavy but at least they are strong enough to resist tank ammunition.
