I was born here. Spoke Polish at home, went to Saturday Polish school. Husband American. My mom wants me to teach my almost 5yr old Polish. I try, thinking about sending her to Saturday Polish school but am afraid she doesn't understand enough and will be uncomfortable. Hi @magdalenakrasuska276:) It's fun getting comments on this video as it's so many years old now! My daughter is 5 as well. We did a couple of weeks of Saturday Polish school last year. The grand majority if the children did not speak any Polish, in fact, and they just colored. My daughter found it boring, so we stopped, but we didn't give it much of a chance. I think Polish Saturday school doesn't give nearly enough quality input per week to teach the language as a standalone. But, I think if you switched all of your media to Polish (and possibly included Polish school, and have your mom switch to Polish) then you would gain some traction. Teaching the heritage language is really a massive commitment- I'm most proficient in English, so it was an adjustment for me, and you really have to constantly be juggling how much input the child is getting, otherwise they turn English dominant in one minute! My son is almost 3, heard only Polish from me until he was almost 2, English in the home and from his dad, and upon entering French daycare a year ago, he is completely French dominant, and we joke that he'll grow up not even sounding like a native English speaker.. So all of that novel to say, it's a big undertaking! TV makes a massive difference (we use a VPN) and I wish you lots of luck on your journey:)

Oh my goodness! I just wanted to comment on the book you mentioned here - Poems for Kids. When you opened this book I almost didn't believe it is this one! Exactly the same edition I had when growing up, even though it's been 20-odd years. I would strongly encourage you to reconsider this one for when your baby is quite a bit older. Julian Tuwim, and Jan Brzechwa are two most famous classic children's authors in Poland, considered national treasure honestly. These books will be more appropriate when they are much older, to have a bit more understanding of the format, the plot, moral of the stories, which is much more difficult to grasp for even I'd say a 5 year old. (Recently on a hike with my mum in Poland we've spent whole 2 hours just quoting these poems to each other by heart!). It is honestly so much fun to know them, and it is really like a part of Polish history. So if your child develops more connections to their Polish roots later in life, I can guarantee their aunts/uncles/cousins will know these poems too.

The ending was epic! I also have a daughter who was born here, and I try to speak Russian to her at all times. My husband is very understanding and knows if I don't do it, there is no one else whom she could speak Russian to. Once in a blue moon, we go to Russian playdates, but even there all kids speak English to each other because it's just easier and more natural to them.

I just ordered a really good book on Amazon its called toddlers handbook with over 100 most used polish words written by a mom you should check out too I think you will like it....I can't wait til I get it too
Our daughter when she was around 18 months old, she enjoyed: 1. Ksiega dzwiekow 2. Pucio - the whole series of books that 'grows' with a child 3. Jeden dzien 4. Nie placz, kroliczku - and other books from this series 5. Jano i Wito - again multiple books in a series. We don't live in Poland either and we've been ordering books from both BookDepository and Empik.
Oh my! My husband just sent me your video and it seems like we're in the exact same position. I'm Polish (born and raised, moved to the US 7 years ago) and single-mouthedly trying to raise two bilingual boys. My husband doesn't speak Polish although he's understanding more and more, and uses some phrases when trying to get them to listen. But no Polish family here, babcia and dziadek are the only ones they have on my side, and they live back in Poland. Fortunately I've been able to take them to Poland, it's gonna be a second summer this year when they'll be enrolled in Polish preschool for a month or so. That's huge, language wise - last year my 3yo came back speaking only Polish and arguing with his dad that he (child) is indeed talking in English to him(dad) 😂 he was not 😁 I do have pretty good access to books (btw - have you even thought about Murzynek Bambo.....?!?!? 😳) But I wish I had quicker access to whatever their tv interest is at the moment - there is plenty of Peppa pig in Polish available on TH-cam, but no Paw patrol 😟. Point is - it is HARD to raise a bilingual child when you're the only speaker in a country far far away 😂

I think that all of us can relate to your feeling of dread at the thought of all your work going down the drain. There are some famous movies that were like that. The original footage was ruined or destroyed, so the director had to reshoot the entire movie. A situation like that really puts you to the test.

I’m glad you found it amusing too;-) My last recording attempt didn’t work out because I kept losing my voice, and as a result, my train of thought! im black, american, and i only speak english. i definitely want my children to speak english, spanish, and chinese. theres a black american man on youtube who taught himself perfect spanish. he doesn't have an accent at all. so maybe you could take the time to learn more polish. also, with my children, one pro about technology and all the crazy screen time kids get nowadays, is that you can hire a tutor to speak to your baby a few times a week. you can just use your tablet for this. the baby can interact with the tutor by reading books, singing songs, ect.-thats how i plan to teach my kids chinese and spanish from the first day i bring them home from the hospital. im also gonna homeschool my kids. you'd be amazed how much you can teach yourself and when I was in school my own teachers bullied me for being gay, the kids bullied me for being black, i have autism and I had a teacher who was a boiling pot of water every day in elementary school and would yell the second you made a confused face-NEVER AGAIN. I don't recommend dropping your kid off at a building all day with no idea what actually goes on. im not even bilingual but I hope this helps

I have a suggestion for you: once you have taught your baby daughter Polish, then you can teach me! But in all seriousness, I admire you for your goal of passing on bilinguality (I think that I made up that word). It is a wonderful gift to have. I see what you mean about it being an uphill task for you, given your situation, so you are a real trooper for trying to make the most of it. You definitely deserve an A+ for effort.
It sounds like you are nearly doing OPOL. I encourage you to keep with it. I have been doing OPOL with my non native Hebrew. My 2 and 4 year olds understand fine, and they only have very limited exposure to Hebrew speakers. TV and music is huge. I too speak with my spouse in English, but I speak less than 1% with the kids. Keeping to nearly 100% Hebrew was really hard at first, but now it's weird to speak English with them. Keep it up... You won't regret this gift to your children.

Hmmm this is a toughie. Personally, I'm not a fan of apps / youtube / TV as a substitute for high quality native input. Sure, adults who learn languages profit from these things, but it's been scientifically proven that young children develop language skills solely through social interaction. A theoretical child that would grow up watching TV but (that) would not be spoken to - would end up acquiring no language. If I ever happen to be raising a bilingual child, I'd try to arrange for the child to go to school in the country where the language is spoken for a time period so they can really learn about the culture etc. and master the language through natural immersion and peer interaction. I probably wouldn't worry too much about providing the perfect model of the language in question for the child - she'll most likely end up filling the blanks later as she matures, what's important is to give her a strong foundation of the fundamentals - phonology, very basic grammar, and talking.... lots of talking!! Co do literatury - powyżej polecone książki są świetne, dodatkowo około 3 roku życia wprowadzałabym słuchowiska dla dzieci (pięknie wykonane przez znakomitych polskich aktorów). Dopiero co odkryłam Twój kanał, ale chętnie przycupnę tu, żeby polepszyć moją wymowę języka angielskiego. Pozdrawiam :)

Andersena ale można znaleźć też łagodniejsze bajki dla młodszych dzieci. Hey you should try books by Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry or books by Iwona Chmielewska. The stationary bookstores I know that have good books are: Skrzynka na Bajki, Bookarest and Lokator. :)
Wonderful video! I grew up bilingual but was taught my second language in school (Welsh). I mean you could aim to raise her in code switch. Welsh is mostly spoken like that luckily for me, but if you give her a base to work off because it will be her choice whether to continue to better or forget her Polish later in life. Honestly the biggest asset I got from my bilingual upbringing wasn't necessarily the language itself, but sort of a linguistic openness and awareness. I had access to more sounds (like /r/, /x/ and /ɬ/) and could tell the sort of interconnectedness of languages. I mean if you give her the best learning possible then GREAT, but honestly as a bilingual child, you're overthinking it. Any bilingualism is good bilingualism, be a bit kinder to yourself :). If she really takes to the language then before you know it she will be correcting you!

Hi there, If you are looking for children's books and don't mind importing them from Poland, I would strongly suggest you Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, www.wydawnictwodwiesiostry.pl/, they also publish some other stuff, but they're main focus is children. You'll find both Polish translations of some international hits as well as original Polish books (or Polish internation hits, like "Maps"). They are all reaaallly nice. What you had there were poems by Julian Tuwim from the 30s, when you know... things were a tiny bit different. The good thing is that those are actually quite often referenced by other Polish texts, so knowing them can be quite useful. Anyway, I recommend you Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, the website is a bit confusing, but I'm sure you'll find something nice and then maybe some source in North America that imports them regularly... Or maybe they'll send it to you. They are my go to place for all the christmas and birthday presents for my cousins and I can be sure I'm giving them the best of the best. (and sometimes I overestimate them...) And when she's a bit older, I think that this book is super cool: wydawnictwo-debit.pl/produkt/opowiesci-na-dobranoc-dla-mlodych-buntowniczek (that's another publishing house, but I can see their offer is a bit more mixed then Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, some really cool stuff and some not so great).

Hi there! Be systematic in your approach. Identify the most important words that you use on a regular basis, listen to them in different contexts (you can use youglish.com), multiple times a day. Prepare for speaking encounters by practicing aloud to yourself or with a conversational partner while focusing on words that will likely come up in the context. Make note of any words that aren’t coming easily to you, and spend more time practicing those. Best of luck!!
Why haven't I found you earlier on yt Vicky?! I love your videos and definitely will continue watching them! Anyways, your mom has just informed me and I subscribed. This "bilingual from beginning" thing is not something new for me (from theoretical point of view :)) as at uni we had some lecturers with profs who also chose this way of teaching their kids. It's definitely not an easy way, except the things you just listed, more difficult situation may come, especially if people who surround you (natives) look down at you (it unfortunately happens) or when the kid reaches an age when he or she doesn't want to learn or expects parents to "speak normally" - but that was just few cases that we discussed, but it's better to look for some solutions in advance. The most important thing is finding a good way of encouraging the kid to continue. Concerning polish books the best ones for babies nowadays is this series PUCIO ( www.empik.com/pucio-uczy-sie-mowic-zabawy-dzwiekonasladowcze-dla-najmlodszych-galewska-kustra-marta,p1124711728,ksiazka-p ) strongly recommended by my friends who already have kids, but I don't know if you can order them or find online (if not I can help). Sorry Victoria you are nit picking and inventing problems where there are non. Well this is North America we do speak English as a main language Here...anything else is a an addition important but addition not crucial. You desperately focus on what you do not have ie Polish books which meet your high standard? Polish friends and neighbors husband . If you do not keep it fun you will loose her pleasure in bonding with you in different language . I am fluent in Polish and my child makes plenty mistakes but I never obsessed about it or put an expectation that she should be reading writing polish poetry by the age of 6. You have access to any book written in Polish for children which the one you have do not make you happy . You doing fine just speaking playing with her in Polish . If you start making this into a choir you will loose her intrest Do not put much pressure and do not expect a lot and things will be ok while you both having precious time together ... in Polish good luck Agnes DC

im black, american, and i only speak english. i definitely want my children to speak english, spanish, and chinese. theres a black american man on youtube who taught himself perfect spanish. he doesn't have an accent at all. so maybe you could take the time to learn more polish. also, with my children, one pro about technology and all the crazy screen time kids get nowadays, is that you can hire a tutor to speak to your baby a few times a week. you can just use your tablet for this. the baby can interact with the tutor by reading books, singing songs, ect.-thats how i plan to teach my kids chinese and spanish from the first day i bring them home from the hospital. im also gonna homeschool my kids. you'd be amazed how much you can teach yourself and when I was in school my own teachers bullied me for being gay, the kids bullied me for being black, i have autism and I had a teacher who was a boiling pot of water every day in elementary school and would yell the second you made a confused face-NEVER AGAIN. I don't recommend dropping your kid off at a building all day with no idea what actually goes on. im not even bilingual but I hope this helps

As for teaching vocabulary to your baby, you might want to look into Editable Montessori Cards you can purchase on etsy. Since they are editable, you can change the English to Polish and use the cards to teach the words to your child. Here's an example:

It sounds like you are nearly doing OPOL. I encourage you to keep with it. I have been doing OPOL with my non native Hebrew. My 2 and 4 year olds understand fine, and they only have very limited exposure to Hebrew speakers. TV and music is huge. I too speak with my spouse in English, but I speak less than 1% with the kids. Keeping to nearly 100% Hebrew was really hard at first, but now it's weird to speak English with them. Keep it up... You won't regret this gift to your children.

Hmmm this is a toughie. Personally, I'm not a fan of apps / youtube / TV as a substitute for high quality native input. Sure, adults who learn languages profit from these things, but it's been scientifically proven that young children develop language skills solely through social interaction. A theoretical child that would grow up watching TV but (that) would not be spoken to - would end up acquiring no language. If I ever happen to be raising a bilingual child, I'd try to arrange for the child to go to school in the country where the language is spoken for a time period so they can really learn about the culture etc. and master the language through natural immersion and peer interaction. I probably wouldn't worry too much about providing the perfect model of the language in question for the child - she'll most likely end up filling the blanks later as she matures, what's important is to give her a strong foundation of the fundamentals - phonology, very basic grammar, and talking.... lots of talking!! Wonderful video! I grew up bilingual but was taught my second language in school (Welsh). I mean you could aim to raise her in code switch. Welsh is mostly spoken like that luckily for me, but if you give her a base to work off because it will be her choice whether to continue to better or forget her Polish later in life. Honestly the biggest asset I got from my bilingual upbringing wasn't necessarily the language itself, but sort of a linguistic openness and awareness. I had access to more sounds (like /r/, /x/ and /ɬ/) and could tell the sort of interconnectedness of languages.
I mean if you give her the best learning possible then GREAT, but honestly as a bilingual child, you're overthinking it. Any bilingualism is good bilingualism, be a bit kinder to yourself :). If she really takes to the language then before you know it she will be correcting you!

If you are looking for children's books and don't mind importing them from Poland, I would strongly suggest you Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, www.wydawnictwodwiesiostry.pl/, they also publish some other stuff, but they're main focus is children. You'll find both Polish translations of some international hits as well as original Polish books (or Polish internation hits, like "Maps"). They are all reaaallly nice. What you had there were poems by Julian Tuwim from the 30s, when you know... things were a tiny bit different. The good thing is that those are actually quite often referenced by other Polish texts, so knowing them can be quite useful. Anyway, I recommend you Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, the website is a bit confusing, but I'm sure you'll find something nice and then maybe some source in North America that imports them regularly... Or maybe they'll send it to you. They are my go to place for all the christmas and birthday presents for my cousins and I can be sure I'm giving them the best of the best. (and sometimes I overestimate them...) And when she's a bit older, I think that this book is super cool: wydawnictwo-debit.pl/produkt/opowiesci-na-dobranoc-dla-mlodych-buntowniczek (that's another publishing house, but I can see their offer is a bit more mixed then Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, some really cool stuff and some not so great).

Hi there! Be systematic in your approach. Identify the most important words that you use on a regular basis, listen to them in different contexts (you can use youglish.com), multiple times a day. Prepare for speaking encounters by practicing aloud to yourself or with a conversational partner while focusing on words that will likely come up in the context. Make note of any words that aren’t coming easily to you, and spend more time practicing those. Best of luck!!

Why haven't I found you earlier on yt Vicky?! I love your videos and definitely will continue watching them! Anyways, your mom has just informed me and I subscribed. This "bilingual from beginning" thing is not something new for me (from theoretical point of view :)) as at uni we had some lecturers with profs who also chose this way of teaching their kids. It's definitely not an easy way, except the things you just listed, more difficult situation may come, especially if people who surround you (natives) look down at you (it unfortunately happens) or when the kid reaches an age when he or she doesn't want to learn or expects parents to "speak normally" - but that was just few cases that we discussed, but it's better to look for some solutions in advance. The most important thing is finding a good way of encouraging the kid to continue. Concerning polish books the best ones for babies nowadays is this series PUCIO ( www.empik.com/pucio-uczy-sie-mowic-zabawy-dzwiekonasladowcze-dla-najmlodszych-galewska-kustra-marta,p1124711728,ksiazka-p ) strongly recommended by my friends who already have kids, but I don't know if you can order them or find online (if not I can help). Sorry Victoria you are nit picking and inventing problems where there are non. Well this is North America we do speak English as a main language Here...anything else is a an addition important but addition not crucial. You desperately focus on what you do not have ie Polish books which meet your high standard? Polish friends and neighbors husband . If you do not keep it fun you will loose her pleasure in bonding with you in different language . I am fluent in Polish and my child makes plenty mistakes but I never obsessed about it or put an expectation that she should be reading writing polish poetry by the age of 6.
You have access to any book written in Polish for children which the one you have do not make you happy . You doing fine just speaking playing with her in Polish . If you start making this into a choir you will loose her intrest
