The January trip provides a frosty yet delightful experience, not really suggesting shorts as appropriate attire. Here is another nice video of the Sudbahn and the Semmeringbahn.... by now we know the Graz Vienna line as the Arosabahn in almost every detail. The Taurus sings but then Austria is a land of composers... if the Taurus was called Ludwig we would be fine! Beautiful journey along the Mur and Murz valleys... then the climb to the Semmering which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.... perhaps the most beautiful line in Europe.... and finally the descent to Vienna.... I have traveled this line only once in 2008 with the EuroNight.... which today replaced the current NightJet... at the time there was still the Wien Südbahnhof station.... the Austrian railways have modernized the entire line from Gloggnitz to Wiener Neustadt.... the paradise of the Taurus and Vectron... of the Railjet, Talent and Cityjet.... thanks!
I am surprised that no one notices a lot of written wrong years, both for the opening of individual railways and facilities on the railways, in this video it refers to the Semmering tunnel. The Semmering tunnel was originally, like all other construction facilities on the Vienna-Trieste railway, built immediately for the double track. Originally, the Semmering Tunnel was built for a double track. As the tunnel, built and opened for traffic in 1854, had problems with water penetration and the formation of a large amount of ice during the winter, it was repaired at the end of the 19th century and the tunnel became single-track. After WWII, a new single-track tunnel was drilled, opened for traffic in 1949 and this video was recorded trough it. The train in this video is passing through the new single-track tunnel, while the first, double-track one built in 1854 is the one on the left, video time 1:16:43. Everything about the Southern Railway is in the museum at the Semmering train station.

I wish they would reactivate the Höllentalbahn and extend it at least to the rax seilbahn once took a night train to Venice like 20 years ago that actually went via the Grammatneusiedl bypass. very weird
