Dual sport vs Street helmet - what to take?
Today’s topic is going to be about the most important gear - the helmet. Which one to take on a long motorcycle trip. Stay with me and I will give you my opinion about it.
So let say that you already planned your trip. The bike is ready, the money are fact, but you still wondering which helmet to take. It’s a good question and I will try to answer it as simple as possible. Maybe the best option is to buy a modular helmet, something like Schuberth or Shoei, but not everyone is ready to spent 5-600 hundred dollars for helmet. I am not going to review the offers from the market, there are thousands of models. What I will do is to give you few ideas to think about.
During the years I have used any kind of helmets:
    Off road
    Enduro
    Street
    Modular
You can find tons of information in TH-cam and compare each one of the models. They all have pros and cons.
Don’t forget that we talking about the choice of helmet for a long motorcycle trip.
    What that is mean?
    1. The helmet need to be comfortable - light, but safe. You will have many riding hours and it need to be already proof before the trip.
    2. To be as quiet as possible.
    3. Easy to operate, put it in or out.
    4. Easy to lock and unlock.
    5. Easy to clean.
    6. Possibility to lock it to the bike. Some open face helmets are not possible to lock. It needs to be something easy to forget in the case it get stolen.
    7. Suitable for any weather changes and any terrains.
After all that I just said I will reduce the possible choices to just two options:
    Dual sport and Street helmet.

Hi! You do very good work. I very like your chanel.
I have one question: do you use a earplug? or any staff to protect ears against noise? I sometimes put in my ears piece of cotton wool. when I ride longer I have noise after trip and it is very annoying.
      cheers!!

I first bought enduro helmet and I hated it, it's heavy and you start to have pain in the shoulders after riding some time, you freeze your face in the winter, the sunblocker pulls your head to the back in the road in high speeds thus giving you neck pain(which can evolve to a worse problem in your body)
In January I went to Uruguay with my Bell M4R and it was good enough, not perfect but I made it better than with the enduro helmet. It has the problems that you say but for me it pays off.
Sometimes, in the trip, it was hot as hell inside my helmet and I could barely breath, so I had to open the visor many times due the minimum space inside the helmet, but opening just a little bit was good enough.
I don't have bluetooth mics but I can see this as a problem.
Also I did not had problems in the offroad.
In conclusion, I think that a >light< enduro helmet beats the street helmet in hot weather, otherwise I would stick with street helmets.

    Great video!
It has really got me thinking about trying a different helmet.
As Wind Talker said, I never gave dual sport helmets a consideration, because I figured they were strictly for off road riding.
    Thank you for the video!

    Love your videos mate.
Your last comment on this one was that "it is just your opinion", on choosing a helmet.
Why i like your videos is that your "opinions" are always backed up with real experience, and you give examples of how one or another thing either worked well, or failed during your own real adventures. Also your accent is great.

"It need to be easy to forget in the case it gets stolen". Hahaha... one of the finest and "rarest" advice on motorcycle helmet. Simply means something that you're not going to regret or to mourn over it.

Good on you mate , great vid. I have almost always chosen a helmet with a peak. When riding into the sun a peak will throw a band of shadow onto your visor. Through this shadow you will be able to see clearly. No flare, no scintillation. It is so much easier riding during that last hour of sun-up.

My friend, as always your observations are just unbeatable and agree 100%. I know I didn't tell anything new, but I couldn't resist, I had to put this comment. You're really precious source of knowledge for a bit less experienced drivers and I hope they follow you in order to avoid a many many ways in which they can spoil the pleasure of riding a bike. I've witnessed a lot how "experienced" bikers around me keeps suffering on their rides, missing to watch or to follow some of precious principles that can be easily picked up from your channel. Agreed! My Tip: Nishua Enduro Carbon (Seller: Louis Motorrad) super lightweight (there's a non-Carbon Version too, bit heavier).
It's a Enduro-shape (bit Shorter, but still Room to breathe on demanding Terrain), removable (2-step adjustable) Beak,
sufficiently ventilated, Pinlock as a Standard and a removable Chin-Curtain for cols Days / Autobahn.
What i like most about it, is the fit (nearly as comfy as an Arai XD-4) with my oval Head-shape.
then the Weight (full Setup is 1270 grams!)
Tested by a well known Magazine, as the impact-safest on the Line-up (couple of years ago), even safer than the above mentioned Arai!
Roomy! enough space for Comfort and Loudspeakers, Mics, etc., whilst Fitting snugly where needed.
    Double-D Ring equipped!
sufficient Visor-Verntilation even in cold and humid Conditions (whilst moving fast enough to ventilate of Course!)
    Cons:
It's quite big! So for really fast riding or for the pure Looks, it's not yours.
the Top-Vent is difficult to reach with the Beak on.
    The Chin-Strap is looooong!
the Frontvent is not adjustable. It's bearable for Temperatures around 0° C, way below that, it get's really cold on your Face / in your Eyes.
    Certification:
ECE 22.05, so it's all good.
    Further:
The KLIM KRIOS Adventure is the same Helmet with a bit different (more modern-edgy) shaped Plastics (Beak and Spoiler)
    Prices:
I Paid 299 € for my Nishua Enduro Carbon.
Price as currently lowered to 239 €
The KLIM KRIOS Adventure (at least in Germany)
    costs around 600 €!
    Hope that helps.

I’ve spent days in my Arai Signet Q. I ride colder climates, however. The Signet Q has a drop-down chin curtain and it’s given me a little relief from freezing. I rode with my Simpson down in Florida and the open chin area definitely circulated a lot more air!
Modular helmets tend to be heavy.
That said, I probably should still try an enduro helmet (especially in the summer).
I don’t ride with a Bluetooth unit (usually), so I usually like helmets that include cut-outs for the speakers (I wear headphones with noise cancellation for distance rides to try to save what’s left of my hearing) at the ears, but I don’t tend to use them.

I have been using a street helmet Full clear visor with an internal amber flip down half visor for long distant riding for over 30 years. Also I wear glasses. Most street or full helmets now have room built in for aftermarket bluetooth headphones and microphone systems. Glasses: you can find great frames that work well with the helmet and not worry about breaking them. Yes it can be hot. Again, the better the helmet the better ventilation. Better the helmet the lighter. Most have a winterization kit for your head, neck, and chin. Plus an anti-fog mask cover for the mouth air intake. You can buy anti-fog wipes or spray;Works great on all visors and glasses. No noise, no windsail or neck torque from the wind. Easy riding

Happy New Year. All good points, I prefer to use a modular, nearly all road riding of course. A great benefit is you can open it when dealing with border and other authorities, when people can see your face, they are happier to talk as one human being to another. Only a couple of models on the market that are modular / touring / enduro, Schuberth looks like the best but like you said, not everyone can spend that kind of money and damage or lose it and you will cry.

I use a modular Nolan with internal "sun glasses" and built in BT Coms. I have to agree about the lack of chin space. I've twice had a bee fly into that small space though. I wonder would enduro helmets catch more bees. As for the sun visor, I have a strip of black insulation tape on the bottom edge of my clear shield that functions as a sun shade when I open the visor and it can be positioned to perfectly shade my eyes. Thanks for you videos. They are very informative and obviously based on lots of experience and sound logical thinking. Cheers, from sunny Australia.

I think your 100% correct I have enjoyed all your vids that I have watched and I may have actually learnt something from them so thanks for that as well. Price should never come into it when purchasing a helmet after all what price do you put on your head.

Not sure what your native language is but your English is excellent! Thanks for the great videos. I recently bought a Shoei Neotec. Unfortunately I had to shave quite a bit of material from the cheek pads because it was too tight but other than that I love it. I bought with the SENA unit made for the helmet.

Love your videos! I just purchased an Oneal dual sport (sierra 2) and love it. Had on open face helmet before so now it feels, of course, much more protective. Also, I was unsure whether a full face helmet might feel too restrictive but my dual sport doesn't feel this way at all. I also don't ride super fast so the extra noise and wind buffeting isn't really on issue for me.
    cheers and thanks!

Hey i know it's an old comment but what size did you choose? I'm pretty small so i want to go for S but some are XS and i don't know if that's too small

@@RandomGirl-ki7wk I'm afraid that I won't be of too much help! I'm quite a tall person (almost 6 feet) and so ended up with the size large helmet. There's a shop near my mom's where i bought it and was able to try on a few. Sorry I can't be of more help!

I guess helmets are like the bikes we chose to ride, always a compromise.
I do not like street helmets, like you say they become a little claustrophobic, modular helmets are similar when down but I find if you flip the front up when riding to get more air they fell a little top heavy.
I have tried an open face style with a visor and they are OK until it rains then I get water down the front of my jacket because they leave your neck exposed.
Adventure style helmet works good for me as like you I wear goggles on the dirt, more to keep the dust out of my eyes.
I was talking to a guy who bought a Schuberth helmet, the flip front adventure style and it cost $1400 Aus, I nearly fainted, my Bell adventure cost me $300 Aus much more reasonable price.
Great topic, thanx for the vid.

I think this is one of those - what are you doing- situations. If you are just touring with some bad roads, I would want the safest and quietest helmet. If I was riding some serious trails, I would want the other helmet. Since I plan on riding slower and on roads that are not very challenging, I will opt to keep my hearing.

Good video. My opinion if I'm going from Hungary to Croatia or GReece (99% of the trip is high way or motorway) I still prefer street helmet. But if I will get more experience as a tour rider I'm planning to go further and for that I think dual sport is the best choice because there are features on those helmets that I will miss in certain situations if I was wearing a street helmet. I'm a very beginner adventure rider and this is just my opinion. Of course somebody can wear enduro helmets on shorter distances (few thousand kilometres) but one thing I'm 100% sure: if I will go to a REAL long motorcycle trip not choosing enduro/dual sport would be a great mistake...

Open face for me with built in sun visor. I know not as good protection but I love the fresh air and it is so light . Disadvantage is it cannot lock to the bike with a cable, but overall I am happy.

I agree that ventilation is very important. I have been on long road trips in the US and sometimes the temperature is over 100 F. A wide field of vision is also important. Comfort is linked to safety.

I prefer the modular [street] helmet, but open cause high wind resistance. Several new modulars now streamline the chin guard behind the helmet to reduce drag. They are a bit more expensive, but I'm saving for a better one.

I had many full face helmet, mostly shoei and as now I have a v strom I thought I gonna give it a go to the Shoei hornet adv helmet.
I was disappointed about ventillation one of the worst on that helmet.
Any recommendations for a well ventilated helmet?

I have a usual street helmet and must admit: longest time I had it on nonstop was 6h. But my helmet was comfortable and I had no issues installing a sena com system. Big advantage for me is the channel for glasses, so thats no problem either. I never considered another type of helmet and I'm very happy with my choice so far. but I want to thank you for these hints, I will at least try one to see the differences myself

For me lightness was the most important ,maybe I have a weak neck but I thought I would have to give up riding before I splashed out on a light helmet. . I regularly do 200 to 450 mile long daily trips and long tours .
Sometimes pinlocks work great ,sometimes after riding with visor up moisture can get trapped between the pinlock and visor ..worse than useless then ! Also its not clear the legality of using a pinlock visor at night.
    Happy adventures !
