The Unique Appeal of Pikmin (2001)

  • Pikmin as a series feels like it's doing better than ever as of late, thanks to things like the impact of Pikmin 4, how readily available all of the games are, and heightened interest in things like Pikmin 2's modding scene. However at least for me, it kind of feels like the game that started it all is the one that tends to get the least focus, and that's something I'd love to see change.
The first Pikmin game holds a very special place in my heart, and I'd like to take this opportunity to try and share why exactly that is.

The fact that the Goolix basically doesn't appear in its own arena until you get close really messed me up as a kid. On my first playthrough when I was really little, I was constantly hardcore struggling. Like, Pikmin extinction after Pikmin extinction level skill. Then I went back to the starting area, Idk maybe to grind back up my Pikmin or something, and then all of a sudden I'm jumpscared in this area I thought was safe by this faceless enemy that I couldn't conceive of any way to damage, and effectively one-shots anything I throw at it. Idk if I even had blues by that point. I was actually IRL scared of the thing. And I think it's fitting that, as someone who never played Pikmin 2, the Goolix was basically my personal Water Wraith. It's fun to look back on with hindsight. :]

One thing I've always loved about Pikmin is how different Olimar is from a lot of other videogame protagonists. He's just a blue-collar worker who loves his family and is thrown into desperate situations against his will. His mundane motivatons, combined with his intense curiosity and passion for biology, really sell him as a likeable character.

before i even watch this, i'll write my little screed: pikmin 1 is by far my favorite of the series. sure, it's short and janky, but:
    - olimar is the only character in the entire game (a rarity in media in general). rather than focusing on an ensemble cast, the game just explores his perspective. and he's a great, nuanced character; he's terrified of this foreign world, he worries about his wife and children, he dreads his fate at the hands of the toxic air... yet he's also intrigued by everything he sees, delighting in the world's unique biology with flowery descriptions and meticulous observations, and he remains hopeful in spite of it all. his perspective also lines up with the player's, as he's learning at the same time we are.
    - the soundtrack is 100% perfect. every track fits the tone of the level exactly. the trio of forest of hope/forest navel/distant springs in particular i still listen to constantly to this day, and the end of day theme has stayed with the series for a reason
    - the game's post-apocalyptic setting is understated, which i prefer. it feels like a bunch of lovely natural gardens until you stop and really look and think about what's going on around you.
    - the 30 day time limit works hand in hand with the 30 parts to collect to naturally let the player know if they're doing well. if they get a part on each day, they know they're keeping up! it also works perfectly with the narrative; it gives both olimar and the player anxiety and urgency
    - since it's so short and you can optimize it so much, it's super fun to replay
anyway, i can't wait to watch this video - i'm excited to see what makes you enjoy it!

I'll check this video out later: before I forget though, I would like to share two of my favourite Voyage Logs from the original game:
"I have been stranded on this planet for some time, and I have grown used to my life here. At times, I even find it quite bearable. I know that as soon as I return, I'll once again be subjected to daily ridicule by my despicable boss... If only I could be a Pikmin... NO!!! I must not think such thoughts! I have a family! I will not give up! Ever!"
"My people were borne out of the sea of stars to come down to Hocotate, and when we complete our lives, we return to the great ocean of stars. But since these Pikmin come from the depths of the soil, surely to the soil they shall return. How very poetic-while it is all alien to me, the basic premise is universally beautiful."

  • @MishKoz

I've never played any of the Pikmin games, but the way you're describing planning out the day system reminds me a lot of Majora's Mask.
It's like "Aw man, I want to do this sidequest, but you can only start it on day 2. I need to use my time efficiently... Maybe I'll progress the main story a bit... Wait, I wasted too much time. Should I reset the cycle now or play it until the 3rd day?"
And you'd _think_ it'd constantly be stressful, but it DOES feel rewarding to plan out your day(s) and have it all work out. I've even see multiple people say that Majora's Mask is the game they always go back to to relax.
I've really gotta try Pikmin one of these days. It feels like such a _Nintendo_ Nintendo game. The type of game where they were trying out new things, and made something really inventive and infinitely replayable.

I feel as though there’s this omnipresent, obligatory Smoky Progg section that always worms its way in. I entirely understand why it’s there- it’s such a great shock of a boss and a highlight of a first playthrough. But then you have this video, not only completely avoiding mention of the Progg, but giving that same attention to the Goolix of all enemies! It just felt so… fresh, so genuine. Great video overall, and if you happen to make a Pikmin 2 video in the future, I’ll be quite excited to watch it.

It was always interesting to me how I was head over heels for the main story of Pikmin, yet always felt like Challenge Mode was some stressful, daunting side-challenge.
No matter if I beat the main story faster or slower than previous runs, I'm going to enjoy fighting the enemies in their hand-made arenas, gradually exploring an area before putting it behind me once its fully cleaned out, and re-earning the good ending is plenty of motivation as is. Challenge Mode loses just enough charm that it reminds me how Pikmin's captivating formula is just a couple steps away from being a stressful, uninteresting chore.

Pikmin 1 is my current favorite Pikmin, I'm chipping away at Pikmin 4 now, but I'm not even close to finishing it yet. I tried Pikmin 1 for the first time last year and fell in love with it even though the Forest Navel scared me really badly. I was so nervous about Olimar dying, the Pikmin dying, and not getting it done, and I gave up on my first playthrough on Day 12. But less than a month later, I started a second run because I had to finish it, I liked it too much, and found that I INSTANTLY was better, and by day 4 had all the progress I had before, and was more confident, and swept the game in 16 days. It felt AMAZING, and I even went back to save my first run. I've played it 4 times total, and loved each and every time. I really should play it again.
The only take here I didn't agree with was the Distant Spring. The angular concrete terrain is there to imply some kind of society or higher intelligence was once there, emphasized in 2 by having alien treasures they aren't familiar with.
However, I've never related to another take more than "I want to like cozy games but just can't get into them." I love Minecraft, but that's mostly because I grew up with it, I have huge plans for my worlds that kinda remove the "coziness", and I like the combat. Animal Crossing got me so bored within 30 minutes, I can't get into it.
While I'm more of a Mamuta fan, I do love the Goolix, and I'm happy that after its retirement in Pikmin 1 (to become the supreme ruler of the universe), it gave the role in games to its orange cousin in 4.

2 is my favorite but yeah 1 is by far the most weirdly wondrous and strange dreamlike kind of creepy one I love it. Like only in this one are you going to happen to encounter something like the goolax or smokey progg and have equal amounts of awe and terror. It's very alien fittingly. It also has the whole odd charming kind of hard to explain niche Japanese game vibe that was common at the time. 2 has these vibes too but by different means and even then doesn't hit as hard as 1, but there's still its own atmospheric things I love (Shower Room my beloved). Overall it's all stuff that sadly I feel has been entirely absent since 3.

  • @ieatatsonic
    @ieatatsonic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I agree with all of this. Pikmin 1 is definitely a big comfort game, one I play through once a year or so. It has just enough levels to be complex but not too much to remember. I think an aspect of the sort of speedrun-ability is that a lot of mechanics really show their worth when you start to care about time. Like yellow pikmin get way better when you realize you can bomb the normal walls to knock them down quicker. The walls themselves go from minor timegates to smaller tasks you can plan around. I often consider Pikmin an RTS because the way you set groups of units to work on projects and then micromanage those groups is really compelling. I'm glad Pikmin 4 kinda emphasizes this further with the Dandori. Putting a catchy term to "micromanagement" or "multitasking" helps cement that this is one of the core pillars of gameplay.
I also love the game because a lot of the puzzles don't really look like puzzles, as they're integrated into the environment. Forest navel has the best of these - the one that requires all colors you showed is a classic, but there's the one off in a set of tiered tide pools or the one that has two bridges by the lake. These puzzles are also structural, about building or manipulating the environment to facilitate infrastructure, which I always love. That's why I kinda love the "marble madness" area. Sure it's not exactly blended in, but the exact problems and intricacies of collecting those parts only really reveal themself as you move through it.
Also Olimar is a family man and also a bit of a goober. He names all the creatures you come across, but he's ultimately a blue collar worker and not a scientist, so they end up with goofy names in-universe because of that.

I played Pikmin Bloom a LOT with my partner who also didn't care about Pikmin before that. We had a really wholesome and awesome time playing it and collecting tiny colorful plant babies sometimes with costumes. Then I made my aunt make amigurumi of the original three pikmin. She made like 10 of them for whatever reason and some of them had wrong colours it was so funny and cute. To be fair 2 seems a lot more extreme in terms of general opinion, the vibe I always got is that most people had 3 as their least favourite but still liked the game a lot, while less people would have 2 as their least favourite but they'd lean more towards outright disliking it

I actually know about the Snitchbug in the Forest of Hope, because I met it in my first playthrough. I went back to the Forest of Hope after I completed the Forest Navel and got Blues, and it just so happened that the day I came back in the Forest of Hope was the 15th day, and it showed me how much time could change in those areas.

No way, Big Yellow video about my favorite game in the franchise
Pikmin 1's vibe can be very lonely game with Olimar as the sole speaker and having actual stakes attached is something never really replicated as well in any other game and it added a lot to the experience the more I look back at it.
I figure you'll mention something like this in this video but I'm commenting first bc I was pleased to see this in inbox!!

One minor detail pretty cool about the first day at the Impact Site is that you can leave Pikmin in the ground for a couple minutes and they will sprout buds/flowers just like in the rest of the game with its time limits. It's pretty much the only time you want to leave Pikmin unplucked, because it is the only point in the game where you can sit and wait for them to mature without losing valuable time/work effort not putting them to work breaking down barriers or carrying items back to base, since you have no time limit until you complete the one objective of getting the engine back to the ship.
You can end up with 25 red Pikmin with flowers to start Day 2 with, which can make that day even more productive.

Pikmin 1 and Luigi's Mansion 1 are two games I really like replaying, getting every ship part in the least days possibe, and racking up a whole load of cash while exploring the mansion.
Both being short with a scoring system at the end of every playthrough makes them really fun to play over and over again.

One of my fondest memories is spending new years with a friend trying to beat Pikmin 1 in a single night. I was more familiar with two since it's the one I owned, and his folks had some pretty draconian screen time rules, so the challenge seemed a lot bigger than it really was. We'd trade off days, and I think managed the full 30 parts in 14 days. I love the game so damn much.
As for the perception of the series, usually in my experience 2 is the odd one out, with three being the return to form, if missing the mark a little, but the fact there's Pikmin discourse at all is a small miracle if you ask me. I remember treating Pikmin 3 with the same spite as Half-life 3, and Duke Nuke 'em Forever.

At 29:38, you use a phrase I really like - Comfort game, as opposed to a Cozy game. I'm not really big on cozy games, as I think the lack of direction lacks appeal personally. However, most (nearly all) of my gaming fits your definition of a comfort game. I like playing games, I like getting slightly better, and I like when the process of getting better lets me try new strategies and ideas. Thank for putting this video together. I think gaming (and getting slightly better) to me is a comfortable thing, and I like to think it is for you as well.

That game over image is genuinely terrifying. Thanks for cluing me in to the canon creepypasta! :D
As someone who's never played a Pikmin game, it's nice to get some manner of perspective on just...what the game even is. If I were to try it myself, I would initially be entirely averse to sending my lil' guys into any dangerous situations (just like you'll never see me doing a Nuzlocke of my own volition), but I imagine that could fade over time. I feel like I'd probably get annoyed with the pathfinding/pikmin ai nonsense too, but at least from a distance I can see how one might write it all off as, "Oh, those silly little plants! How charming". And it's nice to get a bit of perspective on Olimar himself when I only know him from Smash Bros.
...Wait a minute. Pikmin trip in their game. Olimar was added to Smash in Brawl. Does that mean...did Olimar bring tripping with him??

Early on in my first playthrough, I didn't realize whistling was enough to put out pikmin who were on fire. I somehow got my blue pikmin set on fire, and my genius idea was to run straight into a nearby body of water, assuming the flaming, panicked pikmin would have the presence of mind to follow me in.
The blue ones, of course, did not follow.
All of my red pikmin did.

It's incredibly impressive to me how well the original Pikmin stacks up both in its own series, as well as across the entire GameCube library. Like, this game just barely missed out on being a launch title for the system, and would never really fall off of the list of the best experiences the GameCube had to offer. Deeply wonderful game, I love that middle aged bozo and his carrot companions :]

Having grown up watching my dad play Pikmin 2 and not touch 1 due to the time limit, playing Pikmin 1 very recently was such a liminal experience - like, outside of the atmosphere of the first game being weirdly peaceful and dreamlike, since I am so familiar with 2 and only ever watched people play 1 it feels almost like, unreal. Like the forest of hope music I remember not from the game but from Brawl. Completing it was honestly super surreal!

The replayability thing is something I feel a ton. Recently I played mgs3 for the first time in years and then I accidentally played it 12 more times and showed it off to one of my partners who enjoyed it. As a kid I played on the 3ds and I remember learning something I never knew about the controls on the switch version and assuming it was something I couldn't so it on 3ds and thats why i didnt know it.
But then I tried it on the 3ds, and it worked perfectly fine.
I had played that game ~15 times on that silly little ds and I had never known about a basic feature! It was honestly mindblowing and I felt like a kid again. Thanks mgs3, you're peak as hell.
Also something I adore about the actual topic of this video is how human olimat feels. Like blowing up a Pikmin with a bomb rock accidentally and how genuinely gut wrenchingly horrible olimar feels about it. Its great stuff.

I love that rant at 28:30 about speedrunning. I've never "just" speedrun a game. I went feral thinking about a game for so long and exploring every inch of it and trying out everything I could think of to squeeze more playtime out of it, and speedrunning was one of those things.

A thing I love about Pikmin as a series is that every game feels like it has something special to offer, while all still keeping the central idea of the gameplay loop.
Pikmin 1 is very arcadey, focused around optimizing your gameplay with the tools available to you, and is short enough to play through quickly.
Pikmin 2 is all about this dungeon-like exploration, with all the devious traps and enemies contained within.
Pikmin 3 is the most about cooperation, and making the most out of your team of three, organizing the leaders as much as the Pikmin themselves, on top of having this heavier nature theme with lesser human impact, and more of a focus on bosses and less on collecting major items to progress directly.
and Pikmin 4 almost feels like a straight up greatest hits mix of all of them, giving you all the Pikmin to collect the borderline collectathon levels of new things available, with many elements from each game making an appearance.

Pikmin 1 isn't my favourite in the series by any means, but it's absolutely unmatched when it comes to atmosphere. The feelings of isolation and mystique that I get when playing it are something the series has never managed to replicate since, and that alone gives 1 a lot of value in my eyes.
