This reminded me of a time when my Mother taught me to crochet. We both made these gorgeous octagon popcorn stitch rugs. So much fun. She passed a few months ago and as I was watching this I thought of that time and how lucky I was and how I miss those days and time spent together.

Loved the video. This was the 1st thing my grandma (who raised me) taught me to make. I was so excited to have actually made something that contributed to the family. These skills are fading in our society, so thank you for bringing it back to light.
About 25 years ago I crocheted an apple shaped rug using cream sheets and red strips for the skin. I added green leaves and some black seeds. This was a wedding gift for a friend planning to use an apple theme in her kitchen. She liked it so much she used it as a wall hanging instead of a floor rug. 🍎

@@24carrotgold8 my mother has crocheted for years, and I'm sure she still does. She tried to show me how, but I just couldn't grasp it. So I just went to needlepoint and other things. I enjoyed the needlecraft class I took in high school, and had even gotten full credit on a macrame plant holder we had made.
@@jackiepearson2779 she uses the most basic stitch. You could learn everything you need in a TH-cam video. WalMart sells the giant crochet hooks. Very easy ti learn.
This did inspire me to rip up a couple of sheets! I went shopping and got a Q sized hook and went to town. However I decided to make an oval rug…I have always loved the look of oval rugs! I’m not quite finished but it is a winner for sure! Thank you for my next obsession! 🤣♥️👍🙏🇺🇸
In Spain, after the civil war (of 1936/1939) there was not much money, so they used the old sheets to make strips and with them they were used as bandages in case you fell or hurt yourself. Almost all the clothes were reused, luckily my mother learned to sew dress clothes and we were always groomed both to go to school and to go for a walk. Old times that I would not like to repeat. I have learned to sew with a machine and by hand, and lately I am restoring clothes that were tight, etc. I have been retired for a long time and that is a way to reuse what I have at home, it is very entertaining. Aww! I love that you shared this with me! For just 1 day it would be nice to go back in time. I think we would learn so much! My mom (76), recently gifted me a blanket that her mom made from many of the old clothes that belonged to my mom and her siblings...a total of 15 children! It was weaved together using strips of fabric, torn from worn out pants, dresses, tops, coats, and the like. Remarkably, it's still in great shape, and it's very heavy. I love the old ways! Years ago (at least as early as 1900) when flour was put in white sacks, women made clothes from them when empty.. It was 100% cotton and some clothes are still as sturdy today. ( I find them at estate sales). Then they began putting flower in pretty designed material because the women used it so much. May quilts and dresses were made from flowered sacks. Waste not want not. :-)
I grew up in UK….our nanny….used to make …NÉ England term…clippy rugs….all old woolen clothes…I used to help cutting pieces at five…it was done on a frame…..with a hook tool…..sewing was normal for us….when hit not so good times….find expensive fabric cheap….make clothes…..
Sewing is a great tool to know. My husband and I made sure that our 3 sons grew up knowing 2 things really well...how to cook and how to sew. They never thought sewing would ever come in handy. Our 2 oldest went into the army. Sewing came in very handy! Our oldest even made money Sewing for the other soldiers who never learned. 😉
My grandma loved this kind of stuff. I have sheets I saved from when she passed and a tub of her clothes. Been wanting to make something for my aunts and uncles and siblings out of it all.
This reminds me of wonderful memories of my grandma and our special times together learning skills that are shared less and less these days. I’m trying hard to pass some of the things I’ve learned where cooking traditional family heritage foods, carding wool & spinning yarn, fishing techniques and simple hand made fishing gear, gardening including grafting. I taught my younger sister to sew and we took our grandma’s clothing after she passed to make patchwork quilts for 4 much younger half siblings, my dad’s next batch of kids ;) along with a poem to tell them a story of memories of our grandma that they were not able to know and enjoy as I did. Talk about Christmas tears by every sibling, my sister and I as well as my dad!

@@AFineLineA thank you.. my mom did teach me to crochet and knit and sew.. crocheting is supposedly easier but I need to relearn! Many other aspects of homemaking, like cooking, I wasn't taught and the idea of "just" being a housewife would have made my mom cringe! But I wish that idea was even a consideration as I was growing up.. both parents worked fulltime jobs and not out of necessity.. oh well, so they weren't perfect..I still had it pretty good! At 50 yrs old I certainly shouldn't be blaming my parents! Lol
@@adevore1971 Totally understandable! Thing is with learning it is never too late if it is truly something one wants to learn or relearn. Much easier if you already had the skills. It comes back to you. I am very grateful for my parents I learned so much from both. But crochet was not one of them. Self taught on that one. It is quicker even though knitting is finer. Your account of your parents is not really blaming it is stating a fact of life. But hopefully you will give crochet a try again and find being a bit older gives a different reason and perspective for doing something. Hopefully you will fully enjoy it, as well! I used flat sheets to sew my husband boxers shorts. I sew myself sleeveless cool house dresses with pockets in front. That way I stay cool in the tropics, easy to wash, dry quick on the line.
Seeing your cotton strips reminds of the times when I was young my mother would curl my hair using strips of white cotton. They were so easy to sleep on!

I just found your channel and had to subscribe from this video alone. I grew up in a very rural area in the US, we were quite poor and there were a lot of us. I remember doing these with my Grandmother and mother. It was always so much fun. The kids loved ripping the sheets up and removing the excess threads, the adults and older kids would snip the ends and Mom and Gram would roll the balls up. I was the only one of the kids interested in crochet so I got to hang with the adults and crochet these rugs up...it was one of my favorite times. Gram (and Gramp) died In a car accident when I was 11. And my Mom died 21 years ago. I had not thought of these rag rugs in years. I now live in Scotland, and I have a cupboard of sheets and duvet covers (they do not use a top and bottom sheet over here). I could not throw them away, have used a few as dust covers for painting, but was wondering what to do with them besides selling them to the rag man...and I think this is the project! Thank you for bringing back so many wonderful memories for me! And thank you for sharing! 💖

I love this~! I have some from my grandmother and her sisters...my grandmother would be about 114 yrs old, so I have had thee about 50 yrs. We have hot pads, chair pads as well as rugs. They didn't use sheets but they all owned blouse mills so the extra binding was put to use in this way. Thank you for encouraging the younger generation to repurpose and not waste. :-)

Old sheets cut into two inch strips in the same manner as this video are used on my farm and tied ten feet apart on fencing wire. It helps the critters, especially the deer see the fencing wire and protects them from injury of running into the wire and helps me with less broken wire to repair every spring. My neighbor is Amish and uses barbed wire which can do a lot of damage to deer. His wire is strung high, chin level of his work horses. The cloth strips allow the deer to judge the height of the wire so they can run under it. Thank you for video, very nice presentation.

I'm seeing an excellent weighted blanket in that "rug". My son loves a heavy blanket, I think I'll take your idea and size it for that and sandwich it in with the other covers. I think it will create a warming air cushion that way like a thermal blanket does. Very nice. Now I've got to learn how to crochet, lol. Thank you.
The joining method is interesting, haven't seen this before. Another possibility: if you do not completely separate the stripes but stop the tearing 2 inches before each end, you can just make another cut and tear in the other direction. This will create an endless stripe right from the beginning and you can skip forward to the fun crochet part ;)
I dye the sheets so I can get the color combinations I want for the room I will be using it in---I also use my quilting cutting mat and rolling blade cutter to cut the strips. You did a fantastic job of showing how it is done and encouraging others to recycle and get a beautiful useful rug for the home.
I remember the first time I saw my mother rip some fabric for a project... I was very young and she told me it was the surest way to get a straight line each time. Super fast too.
@@SD-tl1lw Rit Liquid Dye in my washing machine, wash on longest setting stopping it to let soak a few minutes before continuing. Use hottest water and a cup of white vinegar in wash. I rinse twice and put another cup of vinegar in final rinse to set it and add softener. I specially liked a Hunter green, red and lighter green rug I made for a Christmas rug at my back door.
My garden is done so now I need something to keep me busy. I think this sounds like a fun hobby to try. I do crochet but I get bored with it because it is a slow process for me. This would be faster and I love colors so I would go nuts adding colors. I'm glad I found you. :)

I have just had this video recommended, and I’ve subscribed. Thank you. Lovely to watch your video teaching others how to recycle things into useful items. This old great-grandmother watched my mother, grandmothers and aunties doing these things after WWII and have done so myself. Of course, there was always the soap making, candles, and pickles, jams, preserves and cordials too. I’m a Scot living in Australia and the “old things” are becoming popular as we all stay home in this pandemic, not just we oldies are homebodies now! I make both crocheted and braided rugs with fabric as you show here. I’ve made thick ones from plastic bags (shopping and bread bags) for out on the back verandah and in the laundry. I made some great rugs out of stockings and pantyhose for the bathroom. They can be used as bath mats. They’re soft, easily washed, and dry very quickly.

I've been crocheting/making t-shirt rugs for years, and have had problems with them coming apart where different strips are knotted (i know, terrible technique!) together. this way of connecting strips is GENIUS! thank you for making this video. i know what i'll be doing on the long, cold, winter nights coming up - it helps with seasonal depression.

Are used to crochet a lot but since I have arthritis in my hands I can’t work with the finer threads and smaller needles because my hands hurt but I can make a rag rug and I know it thank you so much for showing me how to wrap up my old sheets that’s rip thank you keep up the good work
Now I want to learn to crochet. I think these would make awesome mats for my cats. We have a messy mix of blankets, towels, and mats all over the apartment for the cats, and the mats and blankets are a pain on laundry day because they have to be hung up to dry. I think that replacing all of them with these would be great. I can buy sheets super cheap at the thrift store up the street. And even if the colours of the mats don't match, the size and style will. Plus, since they're made of sheets, they can be thrown in the dryer. I think they cats will like them. They'll be soft and cushiony, and in the summer, I think that the material and the construction will help to keep them cool.
I have made many rag rugs for my home, and everyone who sees them are amazed that they were made from old sheets. I have a huge one in my utility room, and made them for my bathrooms. They wash easily and are so soft underfoot, and are very easy to make.

Wow, thanks for the inspiration! My Grandmothers were both seamstresses. One worked in a factory and the other worked for individuals. Times have changed, but I think we're getting back to those times again. Grandma taught me a couple different ways to make scrap rugs. The way I have done it in the past was with a loom and small strips of fabric, then you sewn them in your square, rectangular or round. Lots of fun, thanks again for the inspiration. I know this was produced four years ago but it's quite new to me, thank you for making this tutorial. I've just leaned a great easy method for making rag rugs. I look forward to watching more of your videos on your channel.
I make braided rag rugs from old t-shirts. There are no strings when you use knit fabric. Thank you for the idea to crochet rugs out of old sheets. I hate to throw anything away and have old sheets that need to be used. Wonderful!
I am a person who has to stay busy even if I am watching TV, so I always have my rug project to work on. I have developed a methods of cutting the T-shirts into strips along the grain and even take out the stitches in the hem then roll the strips into balls. I separate the balls into cool or warm colors or just do all colors. Then I braid the pieces together like you would if you were making a basket using three large, strong safety pins. The only place there is stitching is when the rug is completed and I stitch the final ends down on the back. These rugs last for years because they never come apart.

My mom and grandma used to call these 'rag rugs'. It looks so fluffy that I'll bet you could even make a nice, fat, lap blanket too. And if you only had a couple sheets you could just make a small rug to put in front of the kitchen sink, etc. Thank you for your video. Very nice!
My best friends mom used to make rag rugs out of plastic grocery bags and old tshirts I love them they last a very long time too ill be trying this with old sheets for sure great idea
We had a newspaper that was delivered to our door in a blue bag...I saved the bag...added other shopping bags to it...looped them thru the handles and crocheted a long chain. Then, I took fabric strips from my quilting stash and built a wrapped basket using the chain as the core...and not only used the bags up but many fabrics that had been sitting around for a while. The baskets ended up in closets to hold shoes...and an occasional cat. Thank you for your instructive video!
What a quaint idea. How big is the crochet needle it looked like a electric toothbrush size. I use to make strips from sheets and big squares to sew quilts. Never thought to crochet them. Your title brought me to watch the video. I collect thrift store sheets, too, and am always on the lookout for things to make. I made my granddaughters a bedtime set for their American Girl dolls one Christmas. I bought a bunk bed for the dolls and made all the bedding and pillows. Then, I made nightgowns for the dolls to match. All it cost was the very reasonable price of the bunk bed. I will have to make a rug, now! Love your video and have subbed!

A great way to reuse cotton poly sheets or duvet covers. Dye the sheets first if all you have is white, that way you can make any colour. Lovely tutorial, thank you.

Great way to reuse/recycle. I noticed that when you were cutting the 2 inch strips you piled all 5 sheets worth of strips together. I think I’ll place each sheet’s cut strips into separated piles as I cut each sheet separately. That’s just me thinking it would help me save time.
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome I was thinking the same thing, I read the book "Cheaper by the Dozen" so many times as a kid and watched the original movie multiple times, the parents were motion study experts, and I try and do things that save time, so I was thinking while watching, to handle each strip once, or as few times as possible, cut all the edges like you did, turn under the first side to make your cut for the joining slits, scissors are still in your hands, then tear the strips, cleaning off the shreds, then placing them in the piles you desire, but in straight lines, with the uncut slit strips, all at the same end, then they are ready to be cut for the joining slits. Now, you can join them, but lay them back and forth in a long narrow box, then they are ready to be crocheted. Think shoe box, just longer, they shouldn't get tangled, so no rolling into a ball....❤😘

I repurposed some jersey knit sheets for a knitted project like this. So soft and people are always complimenting it. And impressed that I made it myself. Freehand, no patterns. When I let the creativity flow it always comes out great!
For new crocheters, especially show the end of each row more closely how you finish the last crochet then rotate and start new row, so the rug stays square/straight.
I just watched your video which I randomly stumbled across. I love this project. The time and effort to start and finish don't seem bothersome to me at all as I am appreciating the process more and more as I enjoy retirement from my nursing career. You certainly won't be disappointed, no matter what you make. I have even cut my fabric into 1/4" strips, and made small coasters, and candle mats. Those work up very fast, and make wonderful gifts. The holidays are coming fast! 😉
I love this idea for the use of old sheets. I was given a trivet for hot pans to sit on the table it is made this way but she used a rope type to use.it works but I think this would be so much better then the rope one. But it was a gift and she made it special for me. You now have mind in motion thinking of all the possibilities. Thanks
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome It works well, it must be a curtain of lace that does not fray and made of synthetic material. I use it to wash the tub and the sink. I crochet a fairly tight square, easier to make than circles.

What a wonderful project. My aunt would braid rugs, and an in-law gave me a round denim crocheted rug that I cherish and use in our guest bedroom that has a denim bedspread! She crochets them from old blue jeans. That must be hard on the hands! Thank you for sharing with us.

I don't know how to crochet but maybe one could make long strips, bunch several together into three thicker strands and braid them? Then sew them together?
My grandmother and mother taught me how to crochet with a homemade crochet hook made from a screwdriver. I made two oval rugs. I don’t know what happened to the hook. We used the rugs and mom would just through them in the wash and they would come out just like new. We used old fabric and old clothes to make the fabric strips. I will use your attachment trick to join the strips. We did not attach them like you do. I will do my old sheets that way to get them out from the linen closet. Again thank you.

Thank you! I wash mine in cold water and lay flat to dry. I don't have them in high traffic areas, so I don't have to wash often. I shake them out once or twice a week whenever I vacuum. I have one that is about 12 years old, and still looks great. 😊
Just found this video. I got a chuckle out of seeing those butterfly sheets. I had a set of those and loved them. They lasted for years. I hated having to get rid of them when we changed to a different sized bed. They were still in excellent shape when I donated them to Goodwill. Thanks for the memories.😊

This reminded me of a time when my Mother taught me to crochet. We both made these gorgeous octagon popcorn stitch rugs. So much fun. She passed a few months ago and as I was watching this I thought of that time and how lucky I was and how I miss those days and time spent together.

About 25 years ago I crocheted an apple shaped rug using cream sheets and red strips for the skin. I added green leaves and some black seeds. This was a wedding gift for a friend planning to use an apple theme in her kitchen. She liked it so much she used it as a wall hanging instead of a floor rug. 🍎

I enjoyed the needlecraft class I took in high school, and had even gotten full credit on a macrame plant holder we had made.

In Spain, after the civil war (of 1936/1939) there was not much money, so they used the old sheets to make strips and with them they were used as bandages in case you fell or hurt yourself. Almost all the clothes were reused, luckily my mother learned to sew dress clothes and we were always groomed both to go to school and to go for a walk. Old times that I would not like to repeat.
I have learned to sew with a machine and by hand, and lately I am restoring clothes that were tight, etc. I have been retired for a long time and that is a way to reuse what I have at home, it is very entertaining. Good video, greetings from Barcelona-Spain.
Aww! I love that you shared this with me! For just 1 day it would be nice to go back in time. I think we would learn so much! My mom (76), recently gifted me a blanket that her mom made from many of the old clothes that belonged to my mom and her siblings...a total of 15 children! It was weaved together using strips of fabric, torn from worn out pants, dresses, tops, coats, and the like. Remarkably, it's still in great shape, and it's very heavy. I love the old ways! Years ago (at least as early as 1900) when flour was put in white sacks, women made clothes from them when empty.. It was 100% cotton and some clothes are still as sturdy today. ( I find them at estate sales). Then they began putting flower in pretty designed material because the women used it so much. May quilts and dresses were made from flowered sacks. Waste not want not. :-)
I grew up in UK….our nanny….used to make …NÉ England term…clippy rugs….all old woolen clothes…I used to help cutting pieces at five…it was done on a frame…..with a hook tool…..sewing was normal for us….when hit not so good times….find expensive fabric cheap….make clothes…..
Sewing is a great tool to know. My husband and I made sure that our 3 sons grew up knowing 2 things really well...how to cook and how to sew. They never thought sewing would ever come in handy. Our 2 oldest went into the army. Sewing came in very handy! Our oldest even made money Sewing for the other soldiers who never learned. 😉
My grandma loved this kind of stuff. I have sheets I saved from when she passed and a tub of her clothes. Been wanting to make something for my aunts and uncles and siblings out of it all.

This reminds me of wonderful memories of my grandma and our special times together learning skills that are shared less and less these days. I’m trying hard to pass some of the things I’ve learned where cooking traditional family heritage foods, carding wool & spinning yarn, fishing techniques and simple hand made fishing gear, gardening including grafting. I taught my younger sister to sew and we took our grandma’s clothing after she passed to make patchwork quilts for 4 much younger half siblings, my dad’s next batch of kids ;) along with a poem to tell them a story of memories of our grandma that they were not able to know and enjoy as I did. Talk about Christmas tears by every sibling, my sister and I as well as my dad!
My Mom made rugs out of my skirts that had 3 to 5 yards that I made when I was in high school, I am 82 and retired to Hawaii from California. ALOHA

Many other aspects of homemaking, like cooking, I wasn't taught and the idea of "just" being a housewife would have made my mom cringe! But I wish that idea was even a consideration as I was growing up.. both parents worked fulltime jobs and not out of necessity.. oh well, so they weren't perfect..I still had it pretty good! At 50 yrs old I certainly shouldn't be blaming my parents! Lol

It comes back to you. I am very grateful for my parents I learned so much from both. But crochet was not one of them. Self taught on that one. It is quicker even though knitting is finer. Your account of your parents is not really blaming it is stating a fact of life. But hopefully you will give crochet a try again and find being a bit older gives a different reason and perspective for doing something. Hopefully you will fully enjoy it, as well! I used flat sheets to sew my husband boxers shorts. I sew myself sleeveless cool house dresses with pockets in front. That way I stay cool in the tropics, easy to wash, dry quick on the line.

I just found your channel and had to subscribe from this video alone. I grew up in a very rural area in the US, we were quite poor and there were a lot of us. I remember doing these with my Grandmother and mother. It was always so much fun. The kids loved ripping the sheets up and removing the excess threads, the adults and older kids would snip the ends and Mom and Gram would roll the balls up. I was the only one of the kids interested in crochet so I got to hang with the adults and crochet these rugs up...it was one of my favorite times. Gram (and Gramp) died In a car accident when I was 11. And my Mom died 21 years ago. I had not thought of these rag rugs in years. I now live in Scotland, and I have a cupboard of sheets and duvet covers (they do not use a top and bottom sheet over here). I could not throw them away, have used a few as dust covers for painting, but was wondering what to do with them besides selling them to the rag man...and I think this is the project! Thank you for bringing back so many wonderful memories for me! And thank you for sharing! 💖

I love this~! I have some from my grandmother and her sisters...my grandmother would be about 114 yrs old, so I have had thee about 50 yrs. We have hot pads, chair pads as well as rugs. They didn't use sheets but they all owned blouse mills so the extra binding was put to use in this way. Thank you for encouraging the younger generation to repurpose and not waste. :-)

Old sheets cut into two inch strips in the same manner as this video are used on my farm and tied ten feet apart on fencing wire. It helps the critters, especially the deer see the fencing wire and protects them from injury of running into the wire and helps me with less broken wire to repair every spring. My neighbor is Amish and uses barbed wire which can do a lot of damage to deer. His wire is strung high, chin level of his work horses. The cloth strips allow the deer to judge the height of the wire so they can run under it. Thank you for video, very nice presentation.

I'm seeing an excellent weighted blanket in that "rug". My son loves a heavy blanket, I think I'll take your idea and size it for that and sandwich it in with the other covers. The joining method is interesting, haven't seen this before. Another possibility: if you do not completely separate the stripes but stop the tearing 2 inches before each end, you can just make another cut and tear in the other direction. This will create an endless stripe right from the beginning and you can skip forward to the fun crochet part ;)

I dye the sheets so I can get the color combinations I want for the room I will be using it in---I also use my quilting cutting mat and rolling blade cutter to cut the strips. You did a fantastic job of showing how it is done and encouraging others to recycle and get a beautiful useful rug for the home.

@@SD-tl1lw Rit Liquid Dye in my washing machine, wash on longest setting stopping it to let soak a few minutes before continuing. Use hottest water and a cup of white vinegar in wash. I rinse twice and put another cup of vinegar in final rinse to set it and add softener. I specially liked a Hunter green, red and lighter green rug I made for a Christmas rug at my back door.
My garden is done so now I need something to keep me busy. I think this sounds like a fun hobby to try. I do crochet but I get bored with it because it is a slow process for me. This would be faster and I love colors so I would go nuts adding colors. I'm glad I found you. :)

This old great-grandmother watched my mother, grandmothers and aunties doing these things after WWII and have done so myself. Of course, there was always the soap making, candles, and pickles, jams, preserves and cordials too. I’m a Scot living in Australia and the “old things” are becoming popular as we all stay home in this pandemic, not just we oldies are homebodies now!
I make both crocheted and braided rugs with fabric as you show here. I’ve made thick ones from plastic bags (shopping and bread bags) for out on the back verandah and in the laundry. I made some great rugs out of stockings and pantyhose for the bathroom. They can be used as bath mats. They’re soft, easily washed, and dry very quickly.

Now I want to learn to crochet. I think these would make awesome mats for my cats. We have a messy mix of blankets, towels, and mats all over the apartment for the cats, and the mats and blankets are a pain on laundry day because they have to be hung up to dry.
I think that replacing all of them with these would be great. I can buy sheets super cheap at the thrift store up the street. And even if the colours of the mats don't match, the size and style will. Plus, since they're made of sheets, they can be thrown in the dryer.
I think they cats will like them. They'll be soft and cushiony, and in the summer, I think that the material and the construction will help to keep them cool.
They will definitely love them! 😊

I have made many rag rugs for my home, and everyone who sees them are amazed that they were made from old sheets. I have a huge one in my utility room, and made them for my bathrooms. They wash easily and are so soft underfoot, and are very easy to make.

This was awesome.......love the idea and the reuse. I wish I had seen this a year ago when I purged all my old sheets and repurposed them and handed some down that were barely used. I shall keep this on my next list of to do things when I find that our sheets need rotated to new ones!

Wow, thanks for the inspiration! My Grandmothers were both seamstresses. One worked in a factory and the other worked for individuals. Times have changed, but I think we're getting back to those times again. Grandma taught me a couple different ways to make scrap rugs. The way I have done it in the past was with a loom and small strips of fabric, then you sewn them in your square, rectangular or round. Lots of fun, thanks again for the inspiration. My mother made collared shirts for my three older brothers, but they refused when it came to their JC Penney Jean's, right? Dresses were worn back then for the ladies, and beautiful works of art. I make braided rag rugs from old t-shirts. There are no strings when you use knit fabric. Thank you for the idea to crochet rugs out of old sheets. I hate to throw anything away and have old sheets that need to be used. Wonderful!

I am a person who has to stay busy even if I am watching TV, so I always have my rug project to work on. I have developed a methods of cutting the T-shirts into strips along the grain and even take out the stitches in the hem then roll the strips into balls. I separate the balls into cool or warm colors or just do all colors. Then I braid the pieces together like you would if you were making a basket using three large, strong safety pins. The only place there is stitching is when the rug is completed and I stitch the final ends down on the back. These rugs last for years because they never come apart.
You know they charge big money for those rugs. Great job❣️

My mom and grandma used to call these 'rag rugs'. It looks so fluffy that I'll bet you could even make a nice, fat, lap blanket too. And if you only had a couple sheets you could just make a small rug to put in front of the kitchen sink, etc. Thank you for your video. Very nice!

We had a newspaper that was delivered to our door in a blue bag...I saved the bag...added other shopping bags to it...looped them thru the handles and crocheted a long chain. Then, I took fabric strips from my quilting stash and built a wrapped basket using the chain as the core...and not only used the bags up but many fabrics that had been sitting around for a while. The baskets ended up in closets to hold shoes...and an occasional cat. Thank you for your instructive video!

What a quaint idea. How big is the crochet needle it looked like a electric toothbrush size. I use to make strips from sheets and big squares to sew quilts. Never thought to crochet them. I will give it a try.

Your title brought me to watch the video. I collect thrift store sheets, too, and am always on the lookout for things to make. I made my granddaughters a bedtime set for their American Girl dolls one Christmas. I bought a bunk bed for the dolls and made all the bedding and pillows. Then, I made nightgowns for the dolls to match. All it cost was the very reasonable price of the bunk bed. I will have to make a rug, now! Love your video and have subbed!

A great way to reuse cotton poly sheets or duvet covers. Dye the sheets first if all you have is white, that way you can make any colour.

Great way to reuse/recycle. I noticed that when you were cutting the 2 inch strips you piled all 5 sheets worth of strips together. I think I’ll place each sheet’s cut strips into separated piles as I cut each sheet separately. That’s just me thinking it would help me save time.

@@JulieKeeperofMyHome I was thinking the same thing, I read the book "Cheaper by the Dozen" so many times as a kid and watched the original movie multiple times, the parents were motion study experts, and I try and do things that save time, so I was thinking while watching, to handle each strip once, or as few times as possible, cut all the edges like you did, turn under the first side to make your cut for the joining slits, scissors are still in your hands, then tear the strips, cleaning off the shreds, then placing them in the piles you desire, but in straight lines, with the uncut slit strips, all at the same end, then they are ready to be cut for the joining slits. Now, you can join them, but lay them back and forth in a long narrow box, then they are ready to be crocheted. Think shoe box, just longer, they shouldn't get tangled, so no rolling into a ball....❤😘

I repurposed some jersey knit sheets for a knitted project like this. So soft and people are always complimenting it. And impressed that I made it myself. Freehand, no patterns. When I let the creativity flow it always comes out great!
For new crocheters, especially show the end of each row more closely how you finish the last crochet then rotate and start new row, so the rug stays square/straight.

You certainly won't be disappointed, no matter what you make. I have even cut my fabric into 1/4" strips, and made small coasters, and candle mats. Those work up very fast, and make wonderful gifts. The holidays are coming fast! 😉

I love this idea for the use of old sheets. I was given a trivet for hot pans to sit on the table it is made this way but she used a rope type to use.it works but I think this would be so much better then the rope one. But it was a gift and she made it special for me. You now have mind in motion thinking of all the possibilities. Thanks

@@JulieKeeperofMyHome It works well, it must be a curtain of lace that does not fray and made of synthetic material. I use it to wash the tub and the sink. I crochet a fairly tight square, easier to make than circles.

What a wonderful project. My aunt would braid rugs, and an in-law gave me a round denim crocheted rug that I cherish and use in our guest bedroom that has a denim bedspread! She crochets them from old blue jeans. That must be hard on the hands! Thank you for sharing with us.

I don't know how to crochet but maybe one could make long strips, bunch several together into three thicker strands and braid them? Then sew them together?
My grandmother and mother taught me how to crochet with a homemade crochet hook made from a screwdriver. I made two oval rugs. I don’t know what happened to the hook. We used the rugs and mom would just through them in the wash and they would come out just like new. We used old fabric and old clothes to make the fabric strips.
I will use your attachment trick to join the strips. We did not attach them like you do. I will do my old sheets that way to get them out from the linen closet. Again thank you.

Thank you! I wash mine in cold water and lay flat to dry. I don't have them in high traffic areas, so I don't have to wash often. I shake them out once or twice a week whenever I vacuum. I have one that is about 12 years old, and still looks great. 😊
Just found this video. I got a chuckle out of seeing those butterfly sheets. I had a set of those and loved them. They lasted for years. I hated having to get rid of them when we changed to a different sized bed. They were still in excellent shape when I donated them to Goodwill. Thanks for the memories.😊
