Very rough justice for TVS, yet they reported the verdict with dignity and professionalism. It was a very accomplished regional ITV company that provided an excellent local news service. Many of its faces were inherited by Meridian, but it wasn't a change for the better.
Incidentally; I had forgotten the joys of grainy analogue reception from distant transmitters! Reminds me of my poor old great aunt who got a very weedy signal in Brighton from the Rowridge station on the Isle of Wight!
Out of the three franchise holders in the south east, TVS was by far the best. From day one it had a big, brassy and confident feel. Its predecessor Southern TV had become old-fashioned, TVS was a breath of fresh air. Perhaps it was a little over-confident, especially with the amount of its bid in 1991. It will always be one of my favourite ITV brands.
Do you only win a franchise in the South and South East if Fred Dinage presents it until he's 150????

Did TVS really want to keep that franchise? Who the hell did they employ to come up with that ridiculous bid of £60 million? Seeing the likes of Carlton and GMTV couldn't pay their licence fees, TVS would have gone the same way if not bankrupt
You can really fell the bitter undertones. Some restrained bias being let loose on occasion, too.
TVS achieved a lot in their short life. A very noteworthy provider of network programming. Very harsh to take their license away after less than a decade on air. So much effort for no lasting reward.
The 1990 Broadcasting Act was a disaster with a barmy bidding system that was a silly way of choosing who gets the prize and who crashes and burns.
And Central TV only paid £2,000 for it's franchise!
Contrast TVS' reaction to losing their franchise with the Southern tantrum 10 years earlier.

@@garrysimpson1395 it doesn't feel like a "regional" itv anymore our region is Granada. Some people watch their itv regional news(Granada Reports) and some people watch their BBC regional news (North West Tonight)
@@peterwilliamskelhorn6675 Yes I have to agree. Back in the day my late mother used to call the I.T.V. Regional presenters a family. Sadly I.T.V. is now a P.L.C. and when [In one of the last acts by Prime Minister Cameroon] He of the referendum when Channel 7 Regional broadcasting began again] No one watched. They say we are a small world now. I fear with endless chioce we have become more stupid as the human race. As events in the last 6 years have proved. Best Wishes.

@@peterwilliamskelhorn6675 I watch The Chase too but at the weekend on Series Link. Here in the South out of Southern T.V.S. and then Meridian. T.V.S. were by far the best.
The 1991 franchise round shouldn't have happened. Just the conservative government at the time wanting more money! By rights TVS should have been given the franchise as they bid the highest, but it probably would have finished them off eventually!
Tvs provided an excellent local news service in the east of their area from their Maidstone studies and Mike Debens (hope I got the name right) was a very accomplished presenter of that version of Coast To Coast. Wonder what he's doing now? Sad to say even if Tvs had survived that franchise round, by now it would have been swallowed up like all the other regional itv companies and the so called local news would come from studios many miles away and be far from local most of the time.
I know that the 1991 itv franchise were not fair but like in 1964 1967 and 1980 it went on merit and who would do the best service for that area if you saw TVS final programme in 1992 Good Bye To All This they did it with pride joy and happiness and Fred and Fern wished Meridian good luck not like Southern Television did in 1981 which was an all mighy up yours to both TVS and the old IBA but both Southern and TVS made great programmes both locally and nationally
True Tim H. But let us be frank The Thatcher Franchise system was rediclous,with TVS losing it"s franchise after bidding £60million whilst Central TV in the midlands won it"s franchise with just a bid of £300. Also TVS bid high and died after buing Mary Taylar Moore"s company MTM! GOD BLESS!
But Central was COMPLETELY UNOPPOSED for its franchise. That's why they were able to get away with bidding just £2,000 a year.
As indeed did S.T.V. did in December 1980 when the late and great and former presenter of Channel Four*s Right to Reply Gus MacDonald was it"s Head of Programmes"s.But yes I agree and take your point. But with I.T.V. P.L.C. and the strong possibility of I.T.V. P.L.C. being bought out by N.B.C. Universal in conjunction with a newly merged Time Warner Cable and Comcast maga Company this seems a world away now! A former disabled carer for my late and lovely Mum. From the New Forest GOD BLESS!
garry simpson Scottish Television was also unopposed in 1991. They bid the same amount as Central (£2,000). Border Television was unopposed in 1991 as well, winning by default with a bid of £52,000 per year.
Very True. You know your I.T.V. History well. Also Central and Meridian Broadcasting were the first to have a triple Region. Meridian Broadcasting Southampton Madistone and Newbury. Central Birmingham Oxford and Nottingham. But a two year industrial dispute meant the Nottingham News Service never started and Anne Diamond and Nick Owen moved to a troubled T.V.A.M. Didn"t Central South from Oxford begin in 1989?
