    I will use my Unna as my shelter during the planned sea kayak expeditions. Did some test camping and I am very satisfied with it, just think it the perfect tent for my goals.

    This a great looking tent, one day I will break down and get a Hilleberg tent. Thank you and thank you for the nice comment you left me on my video.

      Hi Roger. I think they are a must have in conditions that will really be putting equipment to the test. There are lots of great tents for normal hiking and weigh less. Fall and winter though, I sure love having access to them, and my hammock tarp is a Hilleberg tarp and I sleep pretty well under it when it is stormy as opposed to some of my other tarps. Glad you are making it back.

    I own one of these. I've had it for about 3 years. Very strong in winds. I'm 6'2" and there is plenty of length for sleeping.I have never had problems with condensation even when sleeping through a pea soup fog. I bought the mesh inner to widen the rang of conditions I can use it in. Sometimes (like last weekend!) I pitch it under a tarp. The taper acts like a double vestibule for gear storage and cooking. It also keeps the rain away from the entry. The tarp of course is hard to erect in strong winds while the tent is always easy to pitch. I have no regrets about buying this Hilleberg 1+ person tent compared to the other 1 person Hillebergs.

      Great endorsement Denis. I don't always have the opportunity to put gear through a lot of paces so it is great to hear from actual users. Where do you camp? I keep telling Hilleberg to just have the mesh as a version rather than an option as around here most of the year the mesh is ample. Do you ever un-clip the inner to create workspace? I think utilizing a tarp to augment is a great idea. I have been taking along my lightweight tarp lately and for a little extra weight you gain a lot.
      Take care
      Bruce

      I use this tent above treeline in the Australian Alps - ~7,000ft. This tent is very good in high winds. It is very strong but the shape also helps kill the effects of wind. Using a tarp is hard in the wind but gives you a vestibule and great cooking area. I have an Enan and an Allak too but the Unna is my most used tent. I mainly use the Allak for car camping. The Enan is my super bivy tent. I can't really sit up in it but its almost the same weight as a bivy but is sooo much more comfortable.

      Forgot to say: I love your reviews. Thanks for the good work!

    • @DenisEvans
      @DenisEvans 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because the tent is such a big one person tent, I put my backpack into the bedroom beside the mattress. I leave my boots and stove etc under the front and back outer. This means no vestibule is absolutely no problem.

    • @jayt.22
      @jayt.22 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, Dennis! Would you be able to tell me which of your tents holds up better in the Oz Alps, especially in windy conditions?
      I stayed last week, just off the Main Range and experienced very high winds - pushing the 100 km mark (slept in a Marmot Tungsten 2P). My tent managed to hold up well for most of the night but the gusts bowed one pole over the 12 hour period and one side eventually flattened at 5.00 am (scarey stuff).
      I am after a new tent so I can go back in the hope of completing my trip and was looking at the Allak - it is a little heavier than I was hoping, but for a multi day, the Soulo is too small. I am tossing up between Allak, Unna and Jannu.
      Look forward to your input Denis :-)

    I will choose another hilleberg tent with vestibule.

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Some people are incorporating a tarp with this tent to get the vestibule, so there you are back to a tent that is designed very differently. I think if I was expecting to have to set up in tight areas this would be a great option. I tend to go with tents with vestibules anyway. At least for the muddy boots.

  • @DenisEvans
    @DenisEvans 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So although there is no vestibule. I unpack a lot of my gear to put on the ground between the inner and the outer. Boots stove food water canteens etc Theresa lot of space there around the tent. Then the rest of the near empty pack is either moved into the bedroom or stored outside under its own rain cover. That's how I run my Unna. Had it for ten years now.

    That is funny, I know exactly what you mean by Hilleberg tents being lightweight by design in certain contexts. I bought the Keron 4 primarily as a bombproof car camping (ideally remote 4x4 expedition in tiny Suzuki Jimny, though haven't done that yet) tent for me, my wife and two young boys, that could also be carried on my back/in a bicycle trailer if need be. There are much lighter options out there, but they must sacrifice long term durability and dependability in extreme conditions you might find yourself in on a longer expedition. The Black Wolf Turbo car camping tent that the Hilleberg replaced had the same floor area, but must have been about 4 times the weight (?) and bulk, yet still not as resilient as the Hilleberg in bad conditions. It was not something you would fit in a rucksack. The only thing we sacrificed was head space, there is no standing in the Hilleberg. In mild conditions where I don't use all he guy lines the Hilleberg is just as quick to set up as the "turbo" tent once you get a routine happening.

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice. I love the Keron 4. It is a palace...without the headroom though. You can't argue with all the Kerons in probably the worst places in the world. Would love to see them set it up in crappy conditions in Antarctica. You will be able to pass that tent down someday too. I am getting better with set up now too.

    All trips together, I have been living in the Unna for a few months now, and in various seasons. Seldom more than one or maximum two nights in the same spot. I am very impressed by it, by far the best tent I ever had! For my purpose, long distance sea kayak trips, I can´t imagene a better shelter, it is just perfect. Before I bought it, I got rather inspired by your excellent videos, thank you so much for that. Do you use the Unna yourself as well or do you prefer another Hilleberg model?

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Kayasper. Fortunately my sons work for Hilleberg, and I am just trying to get them all reviewed. Haven't really had a second chance with any particular model. I am also a tarp guy, and use the Hillie tarps a lot. I am pretty torn though which one I would go with if asked. Snow, I like the Allak 3, if I can pitch it, the Anjan...all forms. For places where I can't get a good pitch then I like all the freestanders. Someday I will have to pick if my boys ever leave, so hopefully not too soon.

    • @kayasper6081
      @kayasper6081 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your extended answer, Bruce! I can pretty much understand the joy you must experience to review every single Hilleberg tent. And you do that very well. I am sure there will be many potential buyers who decide to go for a Hillie just because of your videos. I can only confirm that they won´t regret it. I hope you will enjoy many more overnights in nature, cheers!

    Good Review, didnt realise i could raise the outersides for summer ventilation ! :) . I have just bought this tent ,used 3 nights now on dartmoor so a few humble observations from these nights :). The unna keeps getting describe as no vestible but thats a bit harsh. Boots go outside no probs , backpack also. The whole point about this tent is its FLEXIBILITY . The backpack can go outside or inside still with plenty room, and as shown if you get in during the rain you can just release the inner and push it back , same for cooking . So when u dont require the vestible you make the living space bigger again for comfort ! Because its freestanding tent great as a mobile toilet, have noticed in uk, especially on dartmoor ! wild campers crap where they put tent up but with this you can move tent and not crap in best spots , sad but true ! :). As mentioned in vid if its pissing down, I can pack my rucksack driely inside tent, remove inner and pack that keeping it dry or drier aswell , then just quickly take down outer and keep it seperate from rest of gear. During day can use the outer as a protection from elements during lunch etc. It would be perfect if it was 500g less but decided i just need to be a bit fitter and as mentioned tent is light when used at its optimum conditions. I can sit up easy inside and its big enough to spend time inside if weather is foul or long nights. Have colour taped up one corner so i know straight away in foul weather where the front right corner is :) So overall i think its not perfect but still a great tent, now its down to me to get the best out of it :)

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great insights. For fast pitch and solid design to get out of the weather fast it is perfect. I like the headroom too. We have a terrible problem with people crapping everywhere on our popular trails and we have bushes and trees. I can't imagine with nothing like that over there. Looks like people are doing a way better job concealing than we do.

    If you brought the fly out as normal, you would have a very functional vestibule. See Tom Heaneys new review. Hilleberg is odd for marketing it like this.

  • @naturecallsoutdoors
    @naturecallsoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess it would depend on what you are trying to make stronger. For snowload capability, definitely yes, maybe even stronger than the Soulo. If you are looking for sheer wind strength it should be stronger but you will still be dealing with a sail or wall type design where it would be critical to have your tent wind face perfect, where the Soulo would be a little more forgiving. I think what I would do before adding a second pole, which is totally legitimate as they design them that way, would be to get real thoughtful on guyline placement and type of stake used. I think a good mod would be to have separate guylines rather than the stock single that forms a vee. Maybe cut the stock or get another set so you can have the length, then get some real badass pegs. Then I would spider all the guylines so each corner has a splay. Finding the right length so the lines are pulling down as much as possible while providing side restriction. Hope that helps. You could also upgrade to 10mm poles instead which may accomplish your goal, but not add too much weight.

  • @windhamcabin
    @windhamcabin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent demonstration my friend! I love the inner tent idea. The weight is high for normal backpacking, but like you said in the winter less then 5 pounds is really good!
    All the set up and adjustment options make this one a real wish list item!
    I hope you guys have had a great summah!
    Take care -Chris

    Am I right in saying that the only bug net is small section at the top at shoulder height? What concerns me about this tent is it would be a sauna in summer. The soulo seems to have a full door of bug net and the allak and staika 2 full doors of cross ventilation bug net. I realise you can buy a separate all net inner, but as a do it all tent, this seems to have a big flaw when it gets hot. Am I wrong?

    • @naturecallsoutdoors
      @naturecallsoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. I think the term 4 season is misleading really. I really means it is capable of being in snow or driving rain really. The determiner is how well it keeps the weather like snow drifts or driving rain out. The outer is all the way to the ground, and the inner is mainly a fabric with the bugnet as an option on the door. That way even if driving weather makes it under the outer the inner can take up the slack. But the Unna has even less bugnet as you point out. The design of that tent as I understand it was to create the lightest, strongest, smallest footprint tent for narrow landings on mountaineering type outing in the snow. Now it is up to you. Luckily you have a great selection. If you need more info or want to let me know more of you style of backpacking let me know.

      I am thinking the Soulo is the one as well. Andy Wardle's last video sitting in his tent for a few days in the rain proved it is a very livable design.

    Hi Bruce, your right there would be a debate about light weight. I just checked it out....2KG is heavy I thought but I guess if you want that space and security in rough weather then it's worth it in your eyes. How about the MSR tents Bruce. I mean same price range yet lighter? Maan a lot of choices out there. Once staked down it's easy to pop up and i like the open front door. Good review i thought. Any way, have a great week. Mark.

      It is a fun discussion. I love to try and understand what the designers are thinking. I love the MSR gear. I just sold my trusty Hubba after many years. MSR are real innovators as well. I am hoping to get a buddy to buy one of the carbon tents soon so I can play with that.

      Nature Calls Wow now that's going deep Bruce.....thinking as the designers do. Yes MSR are innovators not that i have one...did like the Hubbs though. I've just purchased and used a couple of time the Six Moons Design Lunar Solo...loads of room and light. I'm pretty happy. Any way, great to chat. All the best. Mark.

    Hi everyone, i am looking at all the reviews and all the websites but i stil don't find any packed size of the tent, if some of you got them, i am especially looking for the "unna" and the "soulo" i would much appreciate!
    Happy travels to everyone

    There are 16oz in a lb, so it is not 4lb 17oz, is it 5lb 1oz? 😁

    By nature this tent does not have a vestible. Good luck pushing inner cloth to the side and getting wet if your gears wey making a vestible.
    It's 2.2 kg in weight - alot heavier than an Akto that has a vestible of sorts.
    The price and weight of the Unna, people would be nuts not to go for the Soulo.

    Great! Would be nice to know where close to Seattle is possible to use and practice more my bushcraft skills...

      Hi Peppe. I would research Washington National Forest or Bureau of Land Management to get overall general areas to do Bushcraft. I go near between North Bend and Snoqualmie Pass normally or up by Darrington. Hope that helps.

      Nature Calls thank you so much... I just moved here and I don't want to break the low...light a fire in a not designated area and get trouble. Thank you so much

      Welcome to the area. In general in the National Forests in Washington at least, there are no fires allowed above 5000 ft in elevation. Most established trails will have a sign when nearing that zone. Also check to see if a burn ban is in effect by checking the local news. I also regularly call the Forest Service for the locations I am going to go to and ask them. They are very nice and helpful. Plus you can visit most Ranger Stations anytime, and there are quite a few of them. Are you a bushcrafter that hikes in, or do you like to drive to your spot?

      Nature Calls I'm just a beginner , I have some basic knowledge but nothing more than that . I'm willing to drive up to 1 hr but the driving is not the problem, it's more where to go and start to practice what I have learned reading and watching your videos. Any place it's ok , I live in Renton... Thank you for your help

      I would take advantage of some of the campgrounds like Denny Creek in I-90, but there is a ton of them. Check the Washington State Campground maps. Especially not summer as you will probably be the only one there. Plus the wood around here is all wet through winter and is not so fun to learn skills with...not impossible though, but you can bring wood if you are going to concentrate on other skills and have a nice fire.

    Hey Bruce, Love your tent reviews. I'm in the market for another 1 person backpacking tent. I just sold my Mountain Hardwear Supermega UL2 due to the small vestibule and fragile materials. Since I primarily hike in the mountains, I need something robust with a vestibule that goes right to the ground for cooking in windy conditions and wind driven rain. I have a Hilleberg Tarra and love it, but it's heavy. I have my eye on the Soula or Akto, but still unsure. I just bought the MSR Hubba Hubba NX, but I think I'll return it for a four season tent. I will carry the extra weight for the added protection. What would you recommend for my terrain and unpredictable weather. Thanks and keep up the great gear reviews. Cheers

      Of those 2 I would say the Soulo is more suited to what you are trying to achieve and it is freestanding. Check out Andy Wardle's channel, th-cam.com/channels/gKxNV8RwVZXOW9RCnp1vsA.html . He and All About The Views, th-cam.com/users/chebsoot2 are both running the Soulo and are probably the best actual use for what you are describing. And I think they both rocked the Akto for many years. Especially Andy's last video. If freestanding is not an issue, the Anjan 2GT is worth a look. I love the GT models, but I make sure I have ground to stake in. Hate the rock staking really.

    It's sort of a 1 dimensional vestibule.

    The poor man’s vestibule...its a nice tent but my Atko is the optimized single man tent

      Great to hear. The Akto is hard to beat for reputation. I love the way the pole holds out the vesti on the Akto, and it is roomy enough when laying down.

    What does your background "music" add, exactly? Your narration competes with it for our attention/distraction, and as a result, I'm out of here. Pity, the subject was very interesting.

      Thanks Studebaker. Advice taken and will delete the music from now on

      Thanks for your response. It will really help us appreciate your thoughtful narration. I think music adds when it's between narration segments, maybe, which is hard to build in with filming an inert thing like a tent.

    I just need to know- when you have so much interesting things to say - why add that annoying, disturbing music? I can hardly hear what you are saying.
