    They are very similar, with a few distinct differences. Sow bugs have more of a flat profile whereas scuds are more round. They are both found in rivers and lakes, but I typically find more sow bugs in rivers, and more scuds in lakes (all things relevant of course since many tailwaters have great scud populations). In fly patterns, scuds are usually built with the legs brushed out the bottom while sow bugs usually have their legs brushed out the sides. Hope this helps!

    I've tied a few of these up. I use black wire instead of the flashabou.

    Hello Gilbert,
    Your videos are awesome love your patterns, can you do a scud pattern you like for the weber and surrounding areas, maybe a hares ear to.. Thank you and keep up the great work

      +anthony leone Thanks Anthony! A scud pattern is a great idea for a video. I've got a unique pattern and I will try to get a video up sometime in the near future. In the mean time, this sow bug fishes well on the Weber and surrounding areas where sows and scuds are present. Thanks again!

    Would you mind putting the materials in the video description? Best part about those fish food videos is the add to cart button.

    Surprised you are not doing a bead head. Does the pattern really change if i use a bead head?

    • @GilbertRowley
      @GilbertRowley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not much, I have a variation that I tie with a tungsten bead as well and it fishes fantastically. Great question!

    Are sow bugs similar to scuds?

    If you want barbless you should squeeze with pliers BEFORE tying; just a thought

      +Larry Glatt That's one way of doing it. Thanks Larry!

    Does the Green have sow bugs?

    • @GilbertRowley
      @GilbertRowley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bean9 Regarding crustaceans the Green is known for it's micro scud inhabitants. Many of the large trout there feed on size 20-22 microscopic scuds. I don't think there are many sow bugs, or at least not a dominant population in the Green.

    USE ONLY BARBLESS HOOKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @GilbertRowley

      Haha, I knew there would be comments like this when I posted this video. As a matter of fact, when nymphing I personally use barbless hooks or I pinch the barbs. However, Mr. G. this is a personal choice, not a rule or regulation. Thanks for letting us know where you stand on the matter, and I encourage you to respect others choices to fish barbs or to go barbless regardless of your opinion... because that's what it is... a choice. Have a great day!

      If you have respect for the fish and fishing in general, you had to pinch the barb down, before you made this video.

      Thanks once again for voicing your opinion. We all know where you stand regarding this topic. There are many anglers who don't have a problem poking sharp steel hooks into the faces of trout... in fact... all anglers fall in this category or they wouldn't fish. It's a blood sport, no way around it. If you wish to minimize the impact and feel better about yourself, you may CHOOSE to fish barbless, or pinch the barbs... if you CHOOSE to do so. However, please don't criticize others if they CHOOSE otherwise. Have a great day!

      Can't have a video without the self righteous crowd chiming in.

    That's a nasty barb hook ! I presume you pinch the barb down, before you fish !
