I do understand where you are coming from with this comment as, you are correct that as soon as you take the iron off the base, it is starting to cool down. The main idea is that when you move the item of clothing round the ironing board, you put the iron on the base to heat up. As it heats up very quickly, you shouldn't really struggle with the iron losing the temperature.

we have one of these the dial has stopped working it wont turn any ideas what the issue could be
So basically every 30 seconds you have to stop ironing and put the iron to charge for few seconds ... sounds like fail to me .. : )
