  • Americas largest railroad museum is just outside of Chicago in Union Illinois. They have a bit of everything from cable cars to giant steam engines. They have one of the 2 surviving UP "Big Blow" 8500 HP turbines as well as several operating steam engines with two tracks totaling over 6 miles of main line.

I was just at this museum in March. I was back in my hometown (Hampshire, IL) which is just about 15 mi from Union. I had not been to the museum for about 50 years. I am hoping to go again when I go to my 40th (ugh) high school reunion in June. It's a great place, and I really recommend a visit. My dad worked for the Milwaukee Road RR and the Union Pacific, so I have railroads in my blood!

When I lived closer to Chicago I used to visit the RIM with my good friend Georgia and her grandkids. My favorite part was Santa Fe #2903, a huge steam locomotive. I think it's a 4-8-4, but I could be wrong. Good times.

Amazing as always. The sheer size of some of those engines scrapes my chin on the floor.
Got to love getting lost in a parking lot... guess it's not just this side of the family that does it. This is why I use a navigator, even if it has me take 3 left turns in Aztec.

Retired loco engineer UPRR working out of Chicago. Years ago I was running south on the Belvidere line headed for West Chicago (which is single track) at night and as we neared Union, IL where the IRM is located, I saw a headlight coming at our train. Turned out it was the boys at the IRM fooling around on their siding that connects to the Belvidere but they were not on our track. I got a little concerned and I set the brakes but as we got closer me and my conductor realized the situation. When running single track on a track permit no one else is supposed to be on your track. It sure gave us a start though!

Quite a few years back, my son and I volunteered at IRM. We helped rebuild the decapod's front truck and also worked on diesel loco's. Particularly we figured out the brake system on the Baldwin 121 double ender. I loved working there, I worked there on weekends as I was teaching school for the Navy at the Great Lakes Training Center. There was a camp ground there back then, many good evenings with train crazies!!!

Have always wanted to see this place. Have been to the Orange County Railway Museum and they all talk about Chicago. I shall make sure to visit.
My cousin bought a railroad depot in Danvers, Il and lives in it. He has a collection of a few autos there, soda shop where the ticket office used to be and lives in the main body of the building. Behind the depot/home is a transformer station for that powered this section of the line.

Toy Man Television yep, Illinois Central 201 was built as a Commuter Engine serving Chicago’s South Suburbs (which is today operated by Metra Electric). After it’s formal retirement, it was put on display in front of the Depot in Peoria Illinois, later going to the Duluth Railroad Museum, before ultimately coming to Union in (I think) 2004. The engine is yes, a Rogers built engine, 1889 to be exact. In fact, there are 2 Rogers engines in the collection total. The other is their 1892 built CB&Q ten-wheeler 637, which also participated in the 1948 Chicago Worlds Fair, but operated much longer until 1958.

One's again thank you so much. I'm as you know from the North East. Now living in a town called Starrucca, Pa. I'm just 12 miles from the famous Erie Starrucca Viaduct bridge. All so 12 miles from the Susquehanna Pa. Where the old Erie yards where and were the famous Erie triplex ran. Erie made just three of them. They were used as pushers to push heavy freight cars over the Starrucca Viaduct. They were never used over the road pulling freight. None were saved. However Virginia made five of them called the Virginian Triplex, They were just a little different then the Erie. Do you know if any of the Virginians are still around. Lou

Would you consider going to Midwest old threshers reunion? It happens for 5 days over labor day weekend in mt pleasant Iowa, they have a sg trolley loop with 4-5 trolleys at once with a backshop and a narrow gauge loop where 2-6-2 #12 and 2-6-0 #6, and soon to have 2-6-0 #2. They also have a ton of steam tractors, gas tractors, and quite a few old cars. This is quite an experience to have and the member ships are cheap and you get free trainrides plus acess to the whole property, the memberships are yearly and are good for Halloween and Christmas rides too!

The Illinois Railway Museum is a pretty fun railroad museum. The Shay locomotive has started operation last year in 2018. And it's still operating today. Also that Casey Jones locomotive, is Illinois Central 201. That engine one of the three engines from ICRR to be operated and being loved by Casey Jones. It was the first to have that. Then there is ICRR No. 638, a 2-8-0 locomotive. 638 doesn't survive today. It was scrapped. And finally Illinois Central 382. The engine involved in Casey Jones' death. It was scrapped too. But Clinchfield Railroad # 99 was painted into that engine.

I enjoyed your series on your union pacific models of all the turbines that you have as well as the show that you did now with the turbine in life-size ! What a huge locomotive that is ! One thing you could have mentioned about the “decapod” And that is that the story behind it ! It was (“ before, during, or after“), World War II and the “Russians had ordered (“10 Russian deckapods”) ! But at the last last moment when the locomotives were ready to be transported over to Russia, the Russians backed out on the deal and a lot of us now know as
    Russian Decapods ! 🌊🐺

Now I understand what you mean by that you’re glad that they did stay home ! Yeah, unfortunately I am a little slow !Oh and now that I’ve Met Kyren,
And her little series on the earth models got any tips for one for the titanic I’ve tried to make it for my stepson but it is the most difficult thing I’ve ever encountered and I’ve worked with both Resin and photo-etched in my military models ! But when I saw the model for the first time I nearly cried ! I’m supposed to be a modeler and I should be able to put it together, “no excuses” unfortunately he lost the instructions !
I’ll be glad when I get done with this cataract surgery so I can go back to figuring out whether or not I’m going to need readers to start building and working on my models again ! 🌊🐺

Did you know that 1630 was originally built for Russia along with 200 other locomotives but the inability to pay for the locomotives caused Baldwin to switch the locomotives from a Russian 5ft gauge to a American standard 8 1/2 so they they can run the Decapods as mixed freight locomotives

    • @ToyManTelevision
