CEB was providing electricity to low income earners ( i.e households who concumes 0-30 , 0-60 kWh/month ) at a subsidized price and the difference between the actual cost and the subsidized price was to be funded by the Treasury. However, that funding was never happened and as a result, CEB has to take huge bank O/Ds, which incurs huge finance costs. This happened since late 80 to introduction of cost reflective tariff. Even though CEB made profits after introduction of cost reflective tariff, past financial burdens are still there and that has to be borne by the Treasury. Of course CEB should be restructured and productivity to be improved. But, the route causes of the problem to be eliminated.
Ranil/sajith has granted a debt relief of 5 billion to his ally's company, Daya Gamage. This is just one example. We, the public, have to bear those losses, whether the companies are SOEs or private entities. My point is that our issue lies with the people who govern, not with whether these companies are SOEs or not.
