The testing is very interesting and revealing Mr. Richard. I commented in the previous vid about oil pooling in the crankcase, Dyno Joe makes some good points as well. You have well stated you are not running the saw out of fuel. After WOT, idle time before shutdown while crankcase velocity is low, oil will pool the most if available...immediate shutdown or exact idle times are another factor..also...excellent experiment sir...
Nice test I was surprised thought that oil would have done better. But 40/1 going to be the answer. Can’t wait to see red Armour. That is what I have chosen to run.
Amsoil Sabre is a better bet for power equipment. That said Red Armor is some amazing stuff. The only other thing is Red Line 2 stroke. If I owned a commercial business I’d probably have 3 pieces of equipment to test and compare.
Great videos. I look forward to thr rest of the series. Personally I feel the carb adjustment is more important than mix ratio. After riding a CR500 for years, I found that running Redline Race mix for break in and then on was the only thing that kept it alive. It was ported and piped and made around 75hp. Since then Redline at 50:1 is the only mix I run in all my 2 smokes, saws, weedeaters, snowmobiles, and in 25 years I've never smoked a cylinder unless there was another major failure.
@@nalhcal27031984 Yes. You get a little spooge with Motul 800, but you also get excellent lower end lubrication as well. I haven't tried 710 yet. I'll give 710 a try.
Never used Dominator in a chainsaw but always ran it in my snowmobile’s (Both trail sleds and race sleds). Love these videos 👍. Always have ran things at 40:1
The reason I switched to FD oils is because when I pulled the cylinder off my ms 460 kit saw to upgrade it with a better quality cylinder and piston the inside of the original Farmertec cylinder was all lathered up with red oil, as were the piston, rod and bearings. The 460 had never had any gas in it except 50:1 Echo Red Armor. It had about ten tanks on the original piston and cylinder but I did not like the .060 squish I got with it, which made it hard to start. I replaced it with a HyWay piston and cylinder (.040 squish). I have run JASO FD certified oils ever since.
I'm surprised some of you guys thought this was too dry. I always took the view that you only need what it takes to do the job. I'm not the guy that will fight anyone over it though. If it makes you money, I'm all for it!
Just looking to make your Money Maker last longer. Stick around and we'll see what unfolds. You're right, the easiest way to get full grown men's panties in a bunch is to talk about mix oil. I started down this road knowing this, and I'm committed to show what's inside without bias. Also, I probably used the wrong saw, I should have started with a post EPA saw that's a little thriftier with the fuel.
I'm with you. To me dry means it's going through the engine. Wet means it's loading up. Oil isn't in the engine long enough to burn completely so dry I like.
People usually overestimate the amount of lubricant that's needed for any given application. You see the same things with guns. A thin film is all that's necessary
Really great review of two stroke oil. Thanks to you I have been able to choose oils to use other than the color of it (I like red) but still, I sticking to red armor.
The Dominator has done me well. My ported 400c has run on it primarily 50:1 and 93 oct pump gas. It’s a daily work saw. There’s carbon but I wouldn’t consider it excessive. I shoulda said all my saws run on it. Top handles all the way up to my 395. Interested to see what oil you find has the best results because I’m definitely open to change. I mainly run The Dominator because it seemed the highest quality oil I could easily get since my local parts store sells it by the gallon. I can keep it and a mix bottle in my side box then when needed I can mix up 10 gallons. Anyways this is good content and thanks for sharing 👍
Project Farm ran some Dominator in a generator I think if memory serves correctly. Which is apples and oranges, I understand that. What I saw was great film strength and some carbon build up. Look, no oil burns completely. I truly dig this testing and seeing what happens. I've said it more than once, there are more wives tales in two stroke conversations than at the sewing circle.
I've been using Saber since 1998 and it's done well. My occasional use Stihl 021 is still running strong since 1999. I cleared all my land with it and use it every now and again when branches fall, when someone needs to borrow a saw (LOL)
Very I interesting tests. Probably dosent fit with your current protocol. I would be interested to see a 24 hour sit test. Run your tank through and wait 24hr until the teardown. That normally shows the puddle in the bottom and a "storage" film. Awesome work!
Keep on testing! It's interesting. Don't know anything about saws, my 2T experience is with bikes. Everything looks dryer than it should? What RPM's do the saws work at?
It's the same but different. Saws and other two strokes run at different speeds, temps and powerbands. Again this is a trust but verify thing I'm doing. We are all learning together while keeping myths out of the equation. I'm really trying to stay impartial.
I can't wait until you get to red armor. I picked up 2 huskies from a guy that ran it, a 390xp and a 61 w/66 piston and they were both gooey. He said he ran 40:1. I run 50:1 Motul 710 and it cleans them right up but who knows how he had the saws tuned. Both had new plugs.
It's in the pipeline sir. I'm a big fan of the traditional orange bottle mix oil. Especially at 40:1 It's readily available and for such an "outdated oil" It does a superior job over time.
Stihl ultra is jaso fb rated. Dominator is fc rated i believe, so the Dominator will be cleaner. Most decent 2t mx bike oils now are jaso fd, so cleaner again, having more detergent to combat piston and ring+power valve cleanliness. I always wonder why Stihl's ultra is only fb rated, it's like they are stuck in the dark ages. I do run and collect stihl machines, I run motomix at 33.3:1 and have done for some time, and I stay on the rich side up top, my machines all have carburettors and no m tronic. But regardless what I do, I believe if you burn oil you will get carbon. If you burn gas you will get carbon. Nature or the beast. I don't run 50:1, I think it's to small of an amount of oil. High rpm and high temps I like a bit more oil around the crank bearings. I can live with a bit or carbon in the top end. This is just my thoughts after 30 years of 2 strokes. Various types, work recreation and race. I'm a stihl tech at present. I have noticed in past years, on some multi cylinder race engines, triple cylinder and triple expansion chambers with egt probes just after the exhaust ports, when tuned to the upper limits of egt's the engine top ends would be very clean when pulled apart. But I guess this was due to being on the limits of combustion temps. I do like your work.
being a racing fomulation it doesnt make sense to use in a chainsaw application for every day use. interceptor or sabre product lines would be more suitable here
I’ve never ran dominator. I’m interested in what you think of it for me it looks acceptable so at 40:1 would be no question it’s good. Better than Shaffers? Meh thoughts?

Great Idea! I can tear down a saw at work to show how long term Sabre looks. They have run Sabre at 80:1 for years. I'll be honest I started mixing a little closer to 50:1 after seeing some LONG term wear on the piston skirts. It's a good oil and smells decent when it burns.
