- During the events of Genesis of the Daleks, Davros is assisted in his endeavour to create the Dalek race by Nyder, Security Commander of the Kaled Military, who shows unwavering devotion to the Chief Scientist and goes to extreme lengths to ensure the fruition of Davros' plans. But who is this sinister Kaled henchman? What is the in-universe story of Nyder, and what were the real-world inspirations for this character? Let's find out...

Oh so *that's* why Davros only has one hand, he grew the other one into Nyder!
Nyder was basically a Dalek at heart
indeed he was
“”Heart””
@@BH-98 are you asking what a heart is, cyberman?
@@dalekhybrid845 no I realised I misread the original comment. I was just saying Nyder having a heart needed quotation marks considering how evil he was
@@BH-98 oh okay
Love Nyder. Shame that Peter is no longer with us. Met him in person at a signing event years ago. The way that he snapped his head up and said "Thank you. That is what I needed to know." is one of the most chilling moments in Doctor Who history for me that makes me shudder each and every time I see it.
It was great hearing Nyder again in the Children in Need special, his voice is so iconic
He’s really good in I, Davros too, he doesn’t show up till quite late but he’s absolutely brilliant, him and Terry Malloy really work well together. such a shame about davros’ original actor though I would have loved to see them reprise their rolls together for big finish
No question, Nyder is one of THE best secondary antagonists in Dr Who.
He is the best in my opinion
Nyder was an amazing character in Genesis of the Daleks. He was so devoted to Davros and the Dalek projects but eventually it led to his downfall. By the very creatures he helped create.
“Thank you that’s exactly what I needed to know” is so chillingly delivered when he betrays the scientific elite rebels and it’s just like “oh this isn’t going to end well at all is it”
One of a few people Davros ever considered a friend.
Nyder is hands down one of Doctor Who’s best side villains
I wonder if Davros saw Nyder as a means to an end or did actually see him as someone he could trust and saw him as his only true friend, that's assuming Davros is capable of true emotional connection.
I think he appreciates genuine loyalty. He begged the Daleks not to exterminate the scientists that he rallied to his side.
@@BH-98, I vaguely remember his voice cracking as he begged for them to be allowed to live.
I think you’re right. I also think he was surprised by how unnecessarily brutal the Daleks were being, Davros has a habit of using people even if he hates them, and only kills them if they betray him or are not useful anymore. For the daleks to skip right to the end and not utilise the scientific knowledge of his loyalists must have been harsh even for him.
i always wondered if davros missed him, davros has lacked a skilled right hand since, such competence is hard to find
Nyder is one of my favourite villains, like really holds the audience's attention without trying, that cold humourless glare.
I really liked hearing him in the audio stories too. Nyder epitomised everything wrong with Kaled society, like Davros would always be an outlier in his beliefs, but Nyder when you see him alongside Ravon, you call tell they're both cut from the same stuff, but Nyder was the more competent, and ruthless, more willing to take that extra unnecessary step. Like he barely offered Ravon a chance to duck before having his guards fire on the Doctor and Harry, you know if Ravon had gone down, Nyder would have chalked it up as an acceptable loss.
“Thank you. That was all I needed to know”
Nyder is one of my favourite characters.
The part where he fools Garman is one of my favourite Nyder moment
Nyder is probably one of my favorite non Dalek characters in Dalek stories. He is a very interesting character, and he definitely give off Himmler vibes
Peter Myles...RIP to a fantastic actor. Same to Michael Wisher. Both so suited and well fitted for their roles. Michael went on record (I think it was featured in the Davros Connections in 2007) saying that "Without Peter...playing-giving that superb performance that he gave, it would have been very difficult to be the Davros that I wanted to be."
it's a commanding performance by Peter Miles
Wouldn't it be interesting if Davros engineered a Dalek _SPECIFICALLY_ to look like one in _Genesis_ so he could treat it as if it were Nyder himself? Like he's coping for the lack of socialism thus showing his mental instability?
After all, Nyder was the closest thing Davros had to a friend in the Kaled Dome.
Wish we saw more of him
Nyder I think is slightly scarier than davros as he so blindly follows him representing kind of the people who listen and obey the mad men who posses power and carry out their horrific aims as he even helps davros to wipe out the kaled government enabling the elite to take in kaled infants to be experimented on becoming the first daleks
I know this point is pretty much useless; but I always found the fact that Nyder took 3-4 or more of the Dalek's death ray before finally dying to be both fascinating and terrifying. That ray has been shown throughout Doctor Who both in the past and present to be a one-hit-kill weapon, if you're hit by it, you're just dead; but Nyder, he kept moving and screaming even after being shot, and it took multiple shots for him to finally die. Yes I'm aware that was done for dramatic effect, but thinking about it in universe, Nyder was shown to be a absolute beast at the end of his life by accident; I mean, not even The Doctor survives being shot by it technically. . just one almost missed shot from the death ray was enough to trigger the regeneration cycle which is pretty much a Time Lord's way of cheating death. Davros picked his second-in-command well, not only was Nyder loyal to the end and got many things done in person, he could've also took countless bullet shots to protect him.
Rest in peace Nyder; you may have been a scheming sona bitch, but you were perhaps the only ray of sunshine in Davros's life. 07
I always assumed the dalek gunstick just wasn’t as powerful as later versions.
i want nyder to return so much hed be awsome in nuwho
Shame the man passed away
And we all know they'd mess with him
Look what they did to davros
@@snakedaemongaming6590 just because the most recent appearance of Davros had him out of his chair doesn't mean they've changed him. The show is about time-travel, remember? The Children in Need Special takes place at a point in time before Davros' accident that puts him in his chair, and so he is depicted without his chair. It's not a difficult concept to understand.
@@dalekbumps yeah because Russell t Davies doesn't find it offensive
"A lot of people have a problem associating disability with evil"
And it not how he sees davros to be now
His words, watch them again
@@snakedaemongaming6590 Doctor Who has been associating disability with evil for decades, it's a shameful trait of the show that needs rectifying. Depicting Davros before his accident, or having it so that future appearances of Davros have him healed as a result of absorbing the Doctor's regeneration energy in the Series 9 opening two-parter, can only be good for the show. It might also prompt the writers to actually do something new with Davros instead of having him yet again appear as a static character who only exists to detract agency from the Daleks
@@dalekbumps everyone says that
Look having a disability doesn't make a character inherently evil, his initial actions were for the preservation of his race but that became twisted over time but Russell acted as if there isn't even one disabled person that is the opposite
Professor x for example daredevil for another or how about ironside how about nick parker (blind fury)
Having a disability adds motivation, it's what you do with said motivation
What exactly did 46 do in the special besides looking smug in the special, identify that the meep could not only park but could reverse park and she was shocked when it changed direction, oh and use weapons in her wheelchair
Be afraid everyone, disabled people carry weapons
Great vid mate I was glad he had a voice cameo in destination skaro
Nyder is certainly Skaro’s answer to Earth’s Himmler. But unlike Nyder, Himmler tried to flee when crap hit the fan. Nyder was certainly a threat, and one of the finest Doctor Who villains ever.
-CVGWJames
He the smithers to Davros Mr Burns.
Glad I'm not the only one who made this comparison 😂
“ Thank you. That's what I wanted to know. “
OK, the actor was really good and conveying the Heimrich Himler character he was going for. Because I remember when I saw Genesis of the Daleks and that’s the first person I thought of. Kudos on the great acting.
He was in two original doctor who stories
Not a Doctor Who henchman, but: the closest one I can think of in terms of loyalty and pure tenaciousness is Billy Zane's goon in Titanic. Loyalty to the point of blindness.
Nyder was one of the best villains in Doctor Who. Peter Miles took the part so well. He was totally convincing and chilling. My best Nyder moment is when he is interrogating the Doctor and Harry and they express disapproval of the policy of just abandoning the genetically wounded, ie the mutoes. Nyder sneeringly replies: "Your views are unimportant."
RTD wanting to retcon Davros' injuries completely changes Nyder's value to Davros imo
I was five when this was broadcast so I hadn't heard of Himmler but when I knew a little about him I immediately thought Nyder had been based on him. Isn't one of his first lines 'We must keep the Kaled Race pure'?
The only henchman who came close to Nyder's ruthlessness and devotion to furthering his own power was Lytton. And Lytton doubled down by serving both the Daleks and the Cybermen, until he was murdered on the orders of the Cyber Controller.
Come to think of it, Lytton pretty much suffered the same fate as Nyder!
How much of Nader was a product of his environment verses his nature? The Thals were equally as ruthless, what chance did anyone have?
Nyder should join the first Galactic empire he would make a perfect replacement for tarkin
The phrase is usually right hand man but in this case for davros I guess it would be his left hand man
Nyder would have been screwed if he had broke or lost his glasses, he'd have been as blind as Davros himself.
One of the greatest baddies in DW. A chiiling portayal by Peter Miles.
Nyder was probably Davros’s only friend in all honesty
Davros never had friends, only people he found useful or a means to an end
@@melina001a that’s completely true but when seeing Genesis of the Daleks I always thought that behind that evil persona that davros has I always thought that Nydee, as Dalek as he was found a lot of respect for davros and so did he towards him I felt that those two would’ve been there side-by-side till the end I felt I could see more than just two emotionless power Fanatics maybe I’m wrong that’s just my opinion I love both those characters they make the story so much better
@@MicahSwagsby Perhaps but Darvos being what and who he was would have sooner or later turned on Nyder. The problem with power and being a meglomaniac they dont share power with others. Every defeat by the doctor made him more and more unstable. In the end Nyder would have got a visit from the daleks anyway.
Great video, I would love an Andor like political drama spin off set on Skaro with him and Davros
That would be fantastic!
Nyder is...
Heinrich Himmler (with a bit more hair) ?
Soooo if RTD retcons Davros to have never been disabled, Nyder gets Eric Stoltz-ed…?
Russell hasn't retconned anything, if you're talking about the Children in Need special, that's a prequel to Genesis that shows Davros before his accident. comments like these are becoming very tiresome.

Hot man
hes a space nazi have some standards 💀
Hmm other henchman-Packer!!!!, Yes Mr Vaughan, sorry Mr Vaughan,at once Mr Vaughan.
I like Nyder
Beria was Stalin's Himmler. Nyder was Davros'
Accident? What accident?
Davros never had an accident
It's from the Genesis of the Daleks novelisation, written by Terrance Dicks
@@legobi_wan_kenobi Well that can't be canon else he'd be in a wheelchair or something
@@thebobbrom7176 tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Davros%27s_accident
@@thebobbrom7176 oh I see, you're trying to be funny.
Davros' accident and his time in his life-support chair is still canon, RTD isn't erasing anything. He isn't in his life support chair in the Children in Need special because that's a prequel to Genesis of the Daleks, taking place at a point in time before Davros' accident. The fact that I need to explain this is honestly baffling.
@@dalekbumps Sorry bad joke
Though to be fair that isn't what he implied in the Doctor Who Unleashed
I enjoy your videos so I don't want to get into an argument with you though
