Although I was born in the 90's, and never got to play this game when it first came out, a freind gave me her NES, with some games, including this one, just this last 3-5 months....... I first discovered this game while playing it in her basement.... I don't even like hockey that much, and this is the ONLY game I will be playing.... She even got me the GB version as a gift before I got the NES..... Blades of Steel FTW!... :D
makes the pass, makes the pass, makes the pass... lol. One of the best 2 player sport games ever. I'll never forget my aunt beating my cousin, boy did we laugh, good times.
@TigerTaint Yeah it's updated. Restarted FF and I still see the ad if I use FF 3.6, but if I switch to FF 4.0 BETA and use HTML5 it does block the ad :) Pitty the HTML5 code isn't quite polished yet. What I DID do today was update Adobe Flash so whatever was in the update is getting around AdBlock.
Actually, Mark is a professional video producer by trade. He has been a part of many critically acclaimed documentary films over the past decade. He is very good at what he does and, though he produced some fantastic historical documentaries, it is great to see him following his passion and producing video game reviews. If you do what you love for a living, you never work a day in your life.
Oh man, I loved this game. I didn't owned it myself but I borrowed from a friend and played it so much, maybe more more than some of my own games and I only had it for a few weekends. It just has good gameplay and presentation, simple stuff but done just right.
I only had this growing up. But now that I've been collecting games again that I grew up playing and a few I missed out on, I can say both Ice Hockey and Blades of Steel are great.
My first hockey game, all those memorys of playing with my frends, the fights on the ice, the fights on the floor with my frend when I had beaten the living daylight out of his team and he wanted vengeance....good times
PERFECT now you deserve credit! if you hadnt included this classic game THAT IS A MUST for the series. if you go even further you should review a pc game called face off which infact was in my opinion a version of blades of steel
A friend of mine had a hockey game on the SNES. I played it a few times. I will have to pick it up. This game looks bad ass too. I am not a big sports fan but NBA Jam T.E. this game and some hokey and golf games are fun.
@Kitemasterify Loved both of those games. Blades of Steel was my friends, and it was such a great game for its time, the game play, the halftime show, the fighting. You could go into tournament mode and win the cup, the players were even shown celebrating on the ice w/ the trophy. lol Yeah, my dad and me played Bases Loaded all the time! We got Bases Loaded II, it was good, but some of the pitches were so hard to hit.
This game is actually my first experience of playing the video game about the ice-hockey) But its really not just an ice-hpckey it's BLADES OF STEEL!)))
The strange thing was for the longest time I played it and later on owned it,I didn't realize it was a mini game on the jumbotron.I just assumed it was a visual filler.
They did make another Blades of Steel, but I never played it. It was for the PSX. Anyways I liked NES Ice Hockey more, but Blades of Steel was pretty fun. The name is infact awesome.
5 years after this video and i'm finally getting this game this week
J-Mac n' Cheese where...i can't find it anywhere
That game was my everything when I was 6
Still the best hockey game of all time
Mark you are the fine wine of TH-cam Video game reviewers!
I loved that game, back in nes days.Never liked any other hockey games to this day.
I played this with my dad back when and my 3 year old will soon play it with me! Some games are timeless...

probably the best hockey game ever.
Simple, but yet it has all the features you could ever need.
It's brilliant.

Probably the only sports game I really liked.
Nothing beat the fighting mini-games.

Man this game rocked back in the days. I use to play this alot with my cousin. Boy we had some great matches.
Oh man, I loved this game. I didn't owned it myself but I borrowed from a friend and played it so much, maybe more more than some of my own games and I only had it for a few weekends. It just has good gameplay and presentation, simple stuff but done just right.
"What hockey game has a boss battle from Gradius in it?" would be a great question for parties.
I like the way you play with a new game, then review older games in the same genre.
I play this game all the time! :D I remember when I was younger, I used to play a quick game with my dad in the kitchen before school started. :D
I love this game so much.

I loved this game back in the day!!!
I only had this growing up. But now that I've been collecting games again that I grew up playing and a few I missed out on, I can say both Ice Hockey and Blades of Steel are great.
My friends and I still have little tournaments of this every now and then.
My first hockey game, all those memorys of playing with my frends, the fights on the ice, the fights on the floor with my frend when I had beaten the living daylight out of his team and he wanted vengeance....good times

Looks like a great game, I was a Ice Hockey fan myself as my friend had it and I did not get to see this game until later on.
@gonchyt have you tried NHL 3 on 3? That is a pretty fun arcade hockey game
Someone is really in a hockey mood. Three hockey game reviews in a row? Heheh. :D
I love how the Minnesota team in this game seems to imply that with an NHL license, they're the North Stars.
That's going back a few years.
First hockey game ive ever played, best hockey game ive ever played. :]
my first video game ever actually and i still play it today sometimes but honestly on VC at this point.
PERFECT now you deserve credit! if you hadnt included this classic game THAT IS A MUST for the series.
if you go even further you should review a pc game called face off which infact was in my opinion a version of blades of steel
@mbiastock which movies did he come out in?
anyone remember DOUBLE DRIBBLE?? that game was full of EPIC AWESOMNESS!!!
A friend of mine had a hockey game on the SNES. I played it a few times. I will have to pick it up. This game looks bad ass too. I am not a big sports fan but NBA Jam T.E. this game and some hokey and golf games are fun.
Did you film this on a Retron 3?
This is my most played hockey game of all time.
@Kitemasterify
Loved both of those games. Blades of Steel was my friends, and it was such a great game for its time, the game play, the halftime show, the fighting. You could go into tournament mode and win the cup, the players were even shown celebrating on the ice w/ the trophy. lol
Yeah, my dad and me played Bases Loaded all the time! We got Bases Loaded II, it was good, but some of the pitches were so hard to hit.
except for Mario/Duck Hunt, this was my first NES game that i still play to this day. The theme song is my anthem

This game defines 8-bit hockey, period!
This game is actually my first experience of playing the video game about the ice-hockey) But its really not just an ice-hpckey it's BLADES OF STEEL!)))
awesome, is there a konami code?
Man, I played the hell out of this game on the GameBoy... And I never even watched a single hockey game in my whole life.
The strange thing was for the longest time I played it and later on owned it,I didn't realize it was a mini game on the jumbotron.I just assumed it was a visual filler.
i remember myself playing this game on the unlicensed console back in a day when i didn't know what unlicensed is.
I think this is the best hockey game ever!
oh this brings back memories alright.
Is "Dave" THEE Dave from the classic classic game room review videos from back in the day?
I love this game! It's the only hockey game I like.
Cool game. (Pun definately intended). I also loved 'Double dribbble' also by konami.

i just picked up this game complete in the box for 5 dls at the flea market :)
Did you review Double Dribble? Man, I loved that game, and I hate sports games! I'll have to check out your archives, man.
the only hockey game i ever enjoyed and played :)
Ahhh... good times. I always liked the music and thought it was much too epic for a hockey game lol
The music in the menu when you pick a team and the sound when you move up and down in the menu remind me of pokemon
i have this for the gameboy i loved it
My first and only hockey game...
@cameron123able Yep, I got it as a little kid in '86 and it still works great!
BEST HOCKEY GAME OF ALL-TIME!
If Nintendo was smart they would make games like this online on wiu, would be amazing.
I loved that game
I loved this game
Grabbed my Superman Man Of Steel box to break down on, looked at the Blade movie, now I'm here....
They did make another Blades of Steel, but I never played it. It was for the PSX. Anyways I liked NES Ice Hockey more, but Blades of Steel was pretty fun. The name is infact awesome.
ah yes..the memories. i use to keep record of win/loss/tie. 122-22-15
Blades of steel awesome 8 bit action never gets old ....except me. LOL
"YOUR FRIENDS WILL WANT THIS!" The best tactic in this was to PASS it into the net! Your friend never sees it coming.
This game is great fun!
i noticed when u pass it doesnt say "hit the pass". my copy does and it actually sounds more like "chris kattan!" lol
god if i was 5 again id be playing this
best Hockey Game ever!!!
Yaaaa you picked Toronto im from there :D
there are i think millions of old games! mark isnt going to run out anytime soon! :D
The best sports games on the NES: this, Double Dribble, Bases Loaded and Super Tecmo Bowl.
Robotic Steven Seagal using blades of steel, I'd totally watch it.
why all the ice hockey games?
@Ilseroth not really, nintendo has always made pretty violent games, just exluded any gore
@theonlyboomer I think he edits it him self. THere was a video on here showing is keyborad and it was a video editing keyboard.
i love this game !
Did anyone ever figure out what the dude yells in the game? Some people said, "shoot the puck, "stop the shot," "cut the pass," and "cut the crap" lol
Where's the GAME OVER! screen i heard in sega rally championship 1995
I prefer Ice Hockey on the NES, I like the rumbles more, and I like how the players look like mario, and gotta love the Zambonies.
I want an NHL 1800's edition with the Pittsburgh Penguins in it
I can't believe he didn't put the mini-game in the review that is between the 2nd and 3rd period.
The best hockey game on the NES/Famicom is Ike Ike Nekketsu Bu, nothing can beat that.
is this the same whistlin' audience like in Track and Field II ? ... yes it is - i just checked :D
i was SO unstoppable with minnesota on this game
oh the memories.
